I just had to switch this off and come back to it. Holy what the heck. A goal is just a moment in time and it won’t set you up for life. There will always be another goal. I’ve lived this a thousand times why did that hit me right between the eyes …. Thank you for making this NOW before I start another year with too much effort for zero to little reward. 13:18 We plan as if we’re going to show up differently than where we are now. Again - picks jaw up from floor

For me, my mom always told me that no matter how far or fast you run you will always run into yourself. I think it has been healthier to recognize what I am willing to put the effort toward rather than jumping into who I think I should be. I love seeing people that are put together with hair and nail and makeup and accessories all done.... probably never going to be me. But I can start with getting my hair done quarterly.

I've rewatched this a few times since you published it. It's really helpful for me whenever I watch a video on rapid releasing or '50k in 3 days' writathons. I start trying to set insane goals, and I have to tell myself to chill out and 'meet myself where I am.' When I get ahead of myself, I don't just burn my candle at both ends... I toss my candle straight into the fire and melt it into a blob. 😂

On another channel, I saw a method of goal setting, that reminded me of another thing I had come across and that all gelled in my mind. And it is just another way of saying what you are saying. But, sometimes people learn things in different ways, so I thought I could type it up here, in case it resonates with someone else. First a tiny back story.
The previous thing I had come across was "but first..." syndrome (Thanks FlyLady!). Which means that you see something or think of something that needs to be done, but first...you need to do this other thing, but to do that thing, but first you need to do this third thing...And so on, a "not so good" habit, because the first thing never gets done, because of perfectionism.
The goal thing was to work backwards from your goal in steps in order to figure out what steps you need to fulfill your goal.
Combining the two, it finally clicked for me, that I could use that to break down my goals into ever smaller steps. (I've always just thought of GOAL!, but not how to get there, as you said above).
    So, my new method:
Take a goal - and write it at the top of a sheet of paper, or preferred note taking place.
Then under it, write the "but first". you need to finally get that goal
Then under it, write the "but first" you need to get to the above step
Then under it, write the "but first" you need to get to the previous step
And so on, till you get to something that you can start today. A single step you can take right now with no "But first".
Then you now know every step you need to do to the goal, it can help you see in a visual manner how long it might take to get there, and with each step on the ladder, you are preparing yourself climbing to the next rung (like you said, start with the person you are today, take each step to get to the new you!).
So, that worked for my brain. I hope it helps someone else to "click".

You did it! 60.3k and one more day to go ❤️ I can relate with sacrificing everything and it not paying off. I don’t know what kind of magic you use but somehow you say exactly what I need to hear. Resonate really isn’t a strong enough word.
I moved into my own house this past September. I think I had hoped it would fix everything. It did make my life so much better but my mental illness is still with me. I empathised so hard when you said that you got there into the house and then were pissed that you weren’t happy as that is me right now. It’s frustrating and disappointing and I am sad. This is my fresh start and I feel like I am ruining it.
But what you said about goals being a compass point, not a thing of themselves is something I need to take to heart. I have still made progress and I need to not dismiss that like I always do. Nothing matters if I don’t meet the target but then I just constantly disappoint myself so like you said negative momentum.
Honestly I could quote your whole video. You are so relatable with this. Changing my mental feelings seems impossible but I may just watch this on repeat until it drums into my head 😂 thank you!

I really wish I could go back and hug my past self who set goals for the year in January and beat myself up when March came and I was already behind. There there, it's okay.
"Setting goals is like setting your location on your mental GPS..." I think I heard my brain explode when you said that, Sarra. Plus I can set goals in 90 day increments? Another brain blast. I really needed to hear this right now.
And perfect timing for me to join the HB90 as my birthday is next week (it'll be my gift to myself). I also feel excited about 2023. It's gonna be my year! Thanks, Sarra :-)

I can’t wait for December 11th - HB90 Q1 launch day!! If anyone happens to see this comment, you should consider HB90.
Next quarter will be my second using the system. I didn’t achieve more this quarter than I would have - quite possibly the opposite. But what I wanted to achieve would have left me massively burned out and wasn’t even aligned with my vision for my life, so in the long run it is much better this way.
The self kindness of this system is really something. HB90 takes toxic productivity and flips it on it’s head. I have a feeling next quarter I will get more done than I have in a long time AND it will be in the right direction.

Such relevant statements about starting where we actually are and not where we wish we were. But 2023 is for me! I know it in my bones (that or it's the 65 years catching up with me! lol). I am doing things I enjoy and putting less pressure on myself. I know I have to build in more 'down' time. I am also at the age where I can audit 1 class a semester at UNC-Charlotte (your old stomping grounds). And since gardening is a big part of me, I am enrolled, starting in February, to become a Master Gardener in my county. There are several 'new' pulls on my time, while there are old goals which have been hanging around for 20 years now. But I am approaching them much more realistically now. Can't wait!

Thank you, a lot of this really resonated with me. I have a chronic illness (rheumatoid arthritis) and I’ve been trying to make my work from home dreams come true for 10 years now. My vision of what I want has changed often (following what others say I should do or wanting to be like someone else’s) and I just don’t have the energy some days to show up for myself let alone a community who depends on me. I still struggle with which direction to head in, I have so many ideas. I feel like encouraging other moms with RA is the greatest thing I could do but it is also the hardest because I don’t want to fail at it and it takes a toll on me to share my story. There are plenty of things I’m passionate about (planning and reading among them). I tried your hb90 planner today. It is a cloudy and rainy day so of the 20 blocks I had thought I could do, I only got done 10. I think one of my rewards if I achieve the best level of my goals for q1 is to join the hb90 course for q2. 😊

I want to let you know… I’ve watched a lot of booktubers and authortubers but YOUR channel has been the #1 asset in my indie publishing career, so much that I invested in your course which is also a wealth of knowledge. Though you have a low sub count comparatively, you are my favorite and imho have the most beneficial content. I won’t name names but some channels actually are just entertainment or give no or even detrimental writing advice. I unsubbed to them bc when I actually published my first book I realized they were not serving me on my journey.
You are a treasure… and I hope one day less so hidden treasure. I always recommend your channel/courses to other aspiring indie/authors. I also appreciate that you integrate the teaching of ‘magic’ - ie: I follow manifestation and self-improvement and essentialist/minimalist channels as well and you do a really great job of applying the principals of care/attention/belief/will/action the principle of creation to follow our calling as storytellers and follow the path you forged. I really appreciate the humbleness you teach with, and your kindness. I’ve also been struggling with anxiety and depression for the first time in my life since the pandemic began and it’s so frustrating X but I know if there’s a will, there’s a way and I will heal with time and care to myself. Thank you ♥️ ✨ Blessings in the New Year.

PS: shadow work/journaling and working with a therapist has been SO helpful. There are stories we tell ourselves that we believe that aren’t serving us… Treat yourself like you do or wish to treat the person you love the most. Bc you should love yourself. And the only way to heal from past trauma is unfortunately to rip the thorn out / grapple with it.

I love the idea of far reaching goals actually being "goal posts". Like you AIM for that, but you have to cross a lot of grass to get there. PS, I don't even watch football LOL

Sometimes achieving a goal is a matter of changing our habits. Stopping bad habits and starting good habits can be difficult. Small steps and one day at a time ⌚ might be less overwhelming for some people.

Sara you are my favorite person on RUclips. Watching your videos fills me up with positivity and you are truly an inspiration for me.
A lot of what you said in this video resonates with me. In my twenties, I had the goal of becoming a veterinarian and I did it at all cost. I was sure that I was going to be happy as soon as I hit my goal and when that didn’t happen, I suffered a lot. Like you said, realizing that achieving my goal didn’t make me happy had a compounding effect.
Now, I am veterinarian and I am happy, but happiness wasn’t a magical result of achieving my goal.

All of the head nodding, Is this what I really want? - that is a question I have been asking myself since the start of NaNo if I am honest. Thank you for being so open and letting us into your life.

Wonderful video! I really resonated with what you said about the 2D/3D person. I already know that 2023 will be challenging goal wise as I'm going back to a job this Jan that takes all my energy, dare I say soul sucking lol. As a creative I definitely need a way to plan so I don't let it override my creative dreams.
