- This is Jean Baptiste Lavaux at the wheel of his spectacular Renault 5 Turbo, one of the most surprising entries at Turckheim Hillclimb 2020, displaying some very very committed driving behind the wheel of the Group B mid-engined, Rear Wheel Drive little Monster.
With over 300Hp from the 1.4L Turbo Engine moving the sub-900Kg machine in quite a brisk manner, that will always only tell part of the story because the combination of Turbo-lag, Manual Gearbox and most of the weight being placed at the rear portion of the car makes for a driving experience which needs a capable driver. One that can steer from the Rear and be comfortable with some courageous powersliding... Luckily that seems to be the case...

Aren't all manual cars using an h pattern? Or does it have something special on a race car (besides a different placement of gears) ?
@@nlknighteagle5847 sequential gearboxes are what alot use, but also the paddle shifters are used alot.
@@nlknighteagle5847 a sequential geae box is like a motorcycle, just up and down, or forward and backwards with the stick... Also gain the ability to power shift without the clutch!

Jean Baptiste Lavaux is driving impressively. Sure Jean Ragnotti congratulates him. This driving style is a very sport practive with this car and requires talent to run this racing car. Beautiful to watch.
What a brilliant drive. I remember back in the 80s when there was a European championship with grids of about 30 of these little monsters. There was a great mix of drivers from different countries with well known names like Jan Lammers who had driven in F1, and lesser known drivers whose skill was outweighed by their insanity. I remember the crowd laughing when one of the cars came around after the first lap with a set of round tyre marks going all along the side of one of the cars. The next lap one of the cars had tyre marks going along the side of the car and over the roof and bonnet :-) Great fun and sorely missed.
Who else has a permanent smile watching this?!!

If you watch to the very, very end you see him exclaim and shake his hand in pain. The way the wheel whipped around a few times you have to wonder if he didn't sprain something. Like driving a wild French animal, what a beast.

Man that little Renne gets with it, and the driver lets the rear hang out just enough to get job done, fantastic!, weave section, "we dont need no weave section", flick left, flick right, dosn't lift. The driver, what can I say, not his first time behind the wheel and "nails" the entry and exit of every turn, very nice job

On the outside the car look violently crazy on the corner, yet in the inside the driver is so calm
I may not be the most knowledgeable car person, and I mayb have only recently found out about it, but man I can say this is my favourite car right now. I love small little boxy retro hatchbacks like this, especially when they are so quick and have so much history!
Thats a hard car to drive. I never saw a renault 5 turbo group B driven like that.
Edit: i tought Ragnotti drove only fwd cars, didnt know he drove rwd cars also. I know him btw
It is a pretty great display of skill for sure.. But a certain Jean Ragnotti might be someone you should look for when it comes to drive Renault 5 Turbos on the limit... ;)

That is great car control when you think the car is high powered, rear wheel drive, rear engined (give or take a bit) and a short wheelbase, the driver looks so relaxed and so in control.....

FÉLICITATIONS au pilote sur une R5 Turbo je serait incapable de dire 1 ou 2 mais sur laquelle il n'y a rien a dire et un pilote de folie j'en ai eu des frissons car j'ai tourné sur circuit en TURBO 2 d'origine et en Alpine GTA V6 turbo mais c’était de la promenade en comparaison.

Oh how I look forward to the day someone will run a R5 Superproduction on a hillclimb, I will die a happy man.
Well...that´s something that might have happened some years ago and it might be a question of time until we get that footage... but hey, who knows? ;)
@@HillClimbMonsters Ohh yes, there is only 6 cars ever produced I think. One is currently for sale at Silverstone auctions, expected to go for 350k euro+ :D
