The dude that bagged your burrito at JV's was the owner. Humble dude. I wen't to Bonita High with him and his cousins. They own 50% of the taco shops in San Diego including Los Panchos, Burros amd Fries, Cotijas, Lolitas, La fuente, and many others. This family made different restaurants to capitalize on all customer base. Pure genius. I grew up on Lolitas. It was the go to spot after parties. But Burros and Fries changed the game in my opinion.

Come home California forever. I’ll never understand why ppl leave unless it’s for money. Every state has crappy big cities. You gotta live in the suburbs in California and avoid big cities like the plague lol
Happy Holidays K! I always remember you coming down from SF and first thing you all get is a Chimichanga from Alejandros! ahh miss those days! Hope you're doing well!
Calif Burritos is the only place where I will eat a burrito since it's lighter, and not heavy. They get the mesa and stretch it, so the tortilla is thinner & lighter & they grill the burrito. I get the mini size & extra grilled with grilled chicken, guacamole and pico de gallo. They don't put rice and beans in their burrito which is more authentic. I skip the lettuce and sour cream and they seem to put more chicken. I don't think their rice and beans are too good. I visited there a few weeks ago, and it was perfect.
Thank you for including El Puerto. My grandparents lived down the street form this taco shop. I spent many many summer days walking down with my grandpa to get a slurpee and rolled tacos. Brought back so many happy memories. 😊
Chula tacos in mission beach and new location in casa de oro (spring valley) is the best Al pastor on the spit ever! Almost the same as Tacos el gordo but cheaper. And Bad hombres in Santee is the best I’ve ever had for carne asada and other items. And I’ve tried em all around the county ha
Anyone else appreciate his knife and the different takes on himself? Love the content! No way my chunky self should be watching these 😂😂😂 circle of life! Haha!
There used to be a place called Santana's that sold the best Cali carne asada burrito with fries and they where located on rosecrans they where at the corner i forget the cross st and had drive thru and eat in but now is gone and a coffee shop is there now.
Lolitas is the best for me! It’s all about the salsa too... a lot of these places lack on the flavor of the salsa... very watered down or vinagery bc they want it to last as they make large batches. Lolitas is top quality meat and they make it fresh so call ahead bc you can be waiting a long time 20+ minutes, I’ve waited 40 once. Ball park was my go to location as I worked in DT San Diego. The Lolitas red salsa is flavorful and a hint of spice but not too much. I always asked for extra and it was heavenly.
Salivating. Like. Crazy. Taking your notes on traditional for when we head there for Brewers-Padres...but Lucha Libre is so outside the box cool! (Nice first name, too!)

They were really nice! I have a few friends and family that swear by El Puerto and when i did research, it always popped up. Definitely a great spot especially with the hash browns. What is your favorite food to order there?
El Puerto is hands down the best taco shop. They have the best carne asada EVER. I work at the 7-11 next door for years, so I had my fair share of Mexican food from them.
Thanks for the video. I know now the best spot where to find the best cali burrito! Im from pittsburgh pa and were moving to san diego this year. Gonna watch all you videos.
Nice vid! My fav Cali burrito here in SD hands down, has to be Rigoberto’s on La Jolla blvd (hole in the wall next to promiscuous fork) with the green salsa! 😋
Rigoberto's is a last resort option when everywhere else is closed. There's a bunch of them around and they're never anything special. Decent, but there are way better places everywhere.
I live right down the street and go to El Puerto all the time, but never thought to get their California Burrito! Thanks Jay, definitely gonna hit it up today!
If you’re ever in San Marcos, you need to try the California burrito at Sr. Pancho. Delicious. Plus the restaurant is a train, so adds to the uniqueness. The price is amazing too, probably best around. The line is always huge, so that tells you it’s good.
I’m from Joshua Tree , and spent my teen years surfing around Carlsbad and the near by beaches .. had literally thousands of California burritos from all over Southern California .. my favorite being from a small restaurant in yucca valley called “algobertos “ .. you know it’s good when it feels like you used a whole stick of chapstick on your lips after you eat it lol!! And can’t forget the unlimited pickled jalapeño carrots and hot sauce at the salsa bar .. Muy bueno!!
Cali's and Fries off of Murphy Canyon is way underrated. Humbertos on 25th and Broadway is 🔥. Tito's taco shop on 28th and I-5 is legit. Vaqueros (the barrel) off of Lisbon and Chester in the Skyline area.

You should do one for North County as well, or even some of the other counties. Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, Vista, and San Marcos all have fantastic Mexican food. As well as some of the better taco shops.
Every Marine knows Robertito's in Oceanside (if it's still there 20 years later). The Carne Asada burritos.... or the Carne french fries are completely ridiculous. It's enough to feed 3 grown men and only costs $10.
This is a really good list! My only difference of opinion is a like Lolitas as my #1. The quality of the carne asada, tortilla, French fries, cheese, and sour cream are unreal. Plus, they have one of the best tasting hot sauces I’ve ever had at a taco shop.
I moved to SD from the Bay Area, and I haven't visited any of the locations you mention due to the pandemic. However, I've visited Los Pinos in La Mesa and they served up the best pollo asado burrito I've ever tasted.
@@Jaycation They Bay is a miss and hit just like SD. I learned that it's not the actual establishment but the cooks that matter. I stopped counting the number of times I recommended a place only to hear that the cook(s) had moved on and the food quality had too.
Saritas in Spring Valley is really good. Only problem is that they are so popular that you really should call ahead to order or you could be waiting for a while. Also recommend Los Palmitos in Kearny Mesa and Santana's which are in a few locations.
Crazy I've never heard of Mike's I'm definitely going to have to check it out! The other 4 are fantastic, you nailed it. Best hot sauce goes to El Cotixan hands down!
You are right about that cotixan hot sauce! So distinct and unique from the rest. I tend to overuse it lol Mike's has definitely risen on the list through the years! The carne asada and seasoned thick fries inside a great tortilla really does the trick!
@@Jaycation Haha I tend to drown everthing from El Co in their hot sauce. I've heard part of the reason why it's so fantastic is because they use sour cream, which is why it doesn't hold up in the fridge as long as others. Next cali burrito on my list is Mike's without a doubt!
Hey man, grew up in Mira Mesa, Coro and definitely my go to too. Cool to see a local guy givin some love to some great spots. Gonna try some of these forsure.
Cotixan's was my favorite place to go when I was studying at UCSD! Their hot sauce is the best! Their carne asada fries and Cali burritos are sooo good

JVs was my go to local burrito when i went to USD, soooo many late nights and hungover mornings lol was so psyched to see it featured! I'm out of state now and miss california burritos (and San Diego) every single day haha always my first meal whenever I come back to visit. Oh and if you wanna try another amazing california burrito in that area, Super Bronco up the road on Linda Vista is amazing too!
Humberto's on 43rd street in San Diego is also missing. That place is always packed. And El Nuevo Milenio on the corner of Euclid Ave and Division street in national city should also be noted.
@@JoseSanchez-xm9go l think that there’s two type of taco shops. Hood ones and ones that are not in the hood. I think that he tried to keep it not so ghetto. But if you know about Humbertos you know.
Excellent vid, shout out to JV’s! Also check out La Posta in Casa de Oro/Spring Valley, Don Roman in College Area (SDSU) and Rudy’s in Del Mar and Carlsbad
Bro never comes to North County Costal... we are part of San Diego too! Los Tacos in Encinitas is the best! 5 types of fresh salsa a day. They don't cook the carne till you order it. Pricey but premium for sure!
I’ll be in SD next month so I’m going to check out a few of those burritos shops. Normally I don’t like California burritos because there is too much going on in them. I had my first one at a Padres game a few years ago. Also they are always soooo huge! Instead I’m a big fish taco fan. But you’ve made me change my mind. I have a friend that used to live in Spring Valley and he took us a little hole in the wall place that had the BEST food. Can’t remember the name of the place but I remember their pickled carrots!
Fish tacos are amazing! Yes, give the California Burrito another try.. I had one at a padres game and can say its not the same. Still ok but not straight from the original spots! Have a fun time Anna!
You have to try Momentos Cafe in Grossmont center in la Mesa. Best California burrito ever... and I’ve Tried a most of the ones n this list and trust me , legit Mexican cuisine..! Try it , California burrito with asada and adobada mixed... their green salsa is out of this world..! No kidding..! We moved to Arizona and I can’t wait to go back and stop by for a burrito at Momentos Cafe..!
As per @TeamAdriana California Burrito is an american creation, not known in Mexico(not sure about TJ). In any case in Oceanside the place to get it is Valerie's Taco Stand at Camino Town and Country Shopping Center (from El Camino Real), for $9.49 you will get beef, french fries, cheddar cheese, and either guac or sour cream.
Definitely not known in Mexico! In fact, I think it became a San Diego thing in the late 90s... When i was a kid, I ate just Carne Asada Burritos, it wasn't until the late 90s that California Burritos started showing up in many mexican food menus around town. Valerie's was good! Thanks for that suggestion back in the Oceanside video.
True. California burritos didn't come around until the 90s. Not authentic Mexican. Basically a breakfast burrito. Never cared for French fries in burritos. Seems like a tourist thing
Enjoyed watching this. I used to live a block from Mike's, so that was a revered late night burrito spot in OB. Went to Nico's and Roberto's a lot too. Your picks were interesting with good variety and got me filled with San Diego nostalgia. Thanks for sharing.
Just had some wack wanna be Cali Burrito here in the PI, Had to go back to this video to get my mind right haha. Can't wait to go back to SD and try some of the other ones out.
Surprised the taco stand(north park/downtown/la jolla) wasn’t mentioned. If I had to make a top 3 cali list (based off quality of carne asada alone) They’re definitely up there next there next to luche libre. Have you tried crack taco shop in mission valley or jalapeños in Carmel mt ranch? Crack taco shop uses Cardiff crack tri tip as their asada. 🔥 Jalapeños uses premium steak as well(on par with vallartas & luche in terms of quality). You should do another top 5 cali vid but strictly premium joints.
Places I suggest you try are salyulitas and taco taco they might not be amazing like the other places but they’re definitely up there imo but also burros and fries is probably the most creative tbh
I LOVE Rubios too! Not only their fish tacos but their fish burritos as well! There used to be a place called Fins here that was comparable but i went a few months ago and the location was gone. Looks like it closed down for business unfortunately.
Shout out to Vallarta's for filling out my late night cravings! Highly recommend their off-menu "Christian Burrito" if you want something slightly extra in your California Burrito. It's the same carne asada, guac, sour cream, salsa fresca, cheese, and fries, but you get bacon bits and a fried egg that coats the fries juuuust right with its yolk, giving just an extra level of fatty, silky unctuousness that you can cut down / contrast with red sauce. God I miss San Diego Burritos.
I grew up in the Southbay and been to all of them. Great Cali Burritos but honestly Chuy's Taco Shop off of El Cajon Blvd has the best California Burrito. The whole thing blends in just right!
I grew up in san diego for 10 years before moving to the philippines, i miss authentic burritos soooo much. My dad used to take me to a carne asada place i think across san diego city college, i cant remember much coz i was 6-7 years old then, but i remember that its all i lived for. Huhuhu, if i only i could have a burrito shipped over to here in manila.
@@Jaycation yes its been there forever and was just recently remodeled. That burrito is my favorite bc it takes like home cooking not taco shop burritos.
13:55 Mi Rancho Market I go there often and I've never tried their California burrito. I always get a Cabeza burrito i think it's got onions, cilantro, rice and beans. It's delicious if you like cabeza meat.
Grew up in San Diego and been to many SD Taco Shops growing up and you guys are spot on. I have been to Lolita, Cotixan, JVs 👍🏼👍🏼 and can definitely vouch for them. Honorable mention El Azteca in La Mesa. Super legit and used to go here when I worked at the hospital. Give it a try!!

Yes! My favorite burrito is there, the Ranchero burrito with nopales, meat and this wonderful red sauce and whole beans ...mmmmmmm
HUMBERTOS!
Los Dos Pedros on Turquoise street is my favorite. Best carne asada burrito
Thanks for the Recs J B!
@@JoseSanchez-xm9go l think that there’s two type of taco shops. Hood ones and ones that are not in the hood. I think that he tried to keep it not so ghetto. But if you know about Humbertos you know.
@@Jaycation next video idea... Mariscó food trucks.
@@bazabal1 good call! I have to do some research since i dont know of many. Gotta do it right!
That’s the spot!
Excellent vid, shout out to JV’s! Also check out La Posta in Casa de Oro/Spring Valley, Don Roman in College Area (SDSU) and Rudy’s in Del Mar and Carlsbad
Mikes Taco Shop is 🔥 and their sauces are like aiolis , sooooo good 🙌🏽
So fire!
Lolitas 2 in 1 burrito is 🔥. That Tatis shirt is sick!!!
Much appreciated Jehu! That 2 in 1 burrito is insane haha
Yeahhh buddy. That's my go to at Lolitas or the carnitas tacos but only at the Telegraph location only.
Love when you do the "slow- mo" on pouring on the sauce. Artsy and cool.
Thanks for giving the home town some shine, 💚💚💚🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Jeannette! Always love showing SD some love.
@@Jaycation are you doing baja fish taco video?
You have to try Momentos Cafe in Grossmont center in la Mesa. Best California burrito ever... and I’ve Tried a most of the ones n this list and trust me , legit Mexican cuisine..! Try it , California burrito with asada and adobada mixed... their green salsa is out of this world..! No kidding..!
We moved to Arizona and I can’t wait to go back and stop by for a burrito at Momentos Cafe..!
Great video! Totally agree Mike's is the best! I also love Vallarta's
Ready for one now dude lol
this vid made me hungry. Go Friars ⚾️
haha nice Jay! Hope you get one for dinner... it's windy out though! GO FRIARS! Thanks for dropping in.
Yea, definitely not a Mexican thing! No fries, rice or sour cream! But whatever
Taco Salsa in National city has a great California Burrito also
The good old high school days, walking to Lolitas on Telegraph Canyon Road. I miss home. 😭
But honestly Roberto’s on Broadway was my number one pick.
I bet you cant wait to come back and try out your favorite spots!
Yup the robertos on broadway has the best rolled tacos. But lolitas has better cali burritos.
Same owners I hear..
Grew up there too. When it was the only Lolitas, still go back to get food there too. Love it.
@@vincentvega3747 Nope. Not same owners.
Thank you! We saw this video and tried JV's...it was delish!
Are any of these places better than "the taco stand?" best burrito I have had in my life. two of them in San Diego
Yum! I also wish we had Rubios here in Texas I love their fish tacos
I LOVE Rubios too! Not only their fish tacos but their fish burritos as well! There used to be a place called Fins here that was comparable but i went a few months ago and the location was gone. Looks like it closed down for business unfortunately.
Great video. I miss San Diego.. San Diego has the best Mexican Food HANDS DOWN!
Can't go wrong with that Cali burrito 🌯💯
Definitely a san diego staple!
The whole thing blends in just right!
nice call Vincent! Thanks for watcing
Colimas was the spot back when I was in Oceanside, large portions of food and good quality.
Homes started at his local spot, probably getting free food all the time....all cool I lived in that neighborhood in the late 80's & it's very good
I grew up in san diego for 10 years before moving to the philippines, i miss authentic burritos soooo much. My dad used to take me to a carne asada place i think across san diego city college, i cant remember much coz i was 6-7 years old then, but i remember that its all i lived for. Huhuhu, if i only i could have a burrito shipped over to here in manila.
Los Reyes has my favorite 🌯...the Ranchero ...has meat, nopales, whole beans and chile rojo....seasoned perfectly, omg heaven.
Thats the one in Golden Hill? I had someone tell me about it a week ago!
@@Jaycation yes its been there forever and was just recently remodeled. That burrito is my favorite bc it takes like home cooking not taco shop burritos.

Mi Rancho Market
I go there often and I've never tried their California burrito.
Used to go to El Azteca in the 80s and 90s. Didn't know they were still there. Really good food.
