2 planes come close to colliding at Reagan National Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration is probing a close call between two planes at Washington's Reagan National Airport Thursday. A JetBlue flight and a Southwest flight almost collided before an air traffic controller warned both pilots to stop immediately. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave reports.

Kris totally avoided the first and biggest question. How often do things like this happen? His responses also sounded a lot like an airline PR guy reframing an incident with rosy tones. Not at all impressive. Quite the opposite.

Already a nervous flyer. These near misses, parts falling off airplanes, passengers boarding with stolen passes and passengers having all kinds of meltdowns in the air are making my fear worse.

The FAA in 2012 went to using biographical information to hire candidates rather than training and talent assessment testing (the test that was released in court documents showed things like: You would get 1 point on your score for every high school sport you played, several points if you were unemployed, and surprisingly if you have a pilot's license or previous experience you get 0 points) The FAA is still paying for this blunder and during this time thousands of students paying for their own training gave up trying to get in and moved on with their lives. They probably are not "understaffed", they just don't have enough qualified controllers.

After Reagan fired all of the air traffic controllers in the 80's and 90's due to a labor dispute, a whole raft of new controllers were trained and hired. My guess is most or all of them are retired now, or will soon be retiring.
