This intro was first used on November 19,1982. it was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of HBO. It actually stopped being used regularly in 1993, but was used for the last time on October 31,1997.
This was Hbo's best theme of all time. It was sad that Hbo totally quick using this theme. It brings back memories. Good memories at that! Always played great movies, sporting events, and documentaries. Thank You for sharing with us!

Ah HBO! Simply having it back then was a sort of status symbol at school at the time lol. We first got cable in '82 and I remember being blown away at how my dad no longer needed to go on the roof to adjust the antenna anymore haha. All the channels all of a sudden came in clear! Kids now can't even imagine lol
I got an antenna a few years ago again.........because the cost of the bill outweighed my interest in the few cable/online subscription-exclusive channels that I did watch.
We lived in the country so no HBO for us as kids but on weekends my parents would let me go over and spend the night at my cousins who had it! Great memories.
Geesh I remember as a kid going to my grandmothers and uncles house watching this, my uncle used to say let's see what's on home box :) meaning HBO, home box office, we also used to play duck hunt and Mario on the Nintendo. Good times. It was great because we lived in the country and got 3 channels, channel 3 PBS and UHF lol.. Good times, I'd leave it all now for one day of it
I saw that special the other day. It's floating around RUclips somewhere. Amazing how it took them three months just to build the miniature city. And to think, they could probably do it within less than a week today with CGI, and have it look only half as good.
Yeah, Super Fuzz from 1980!!! I'm so glad I grew up in the 80s. It was the best time for movies, music and just being a lil kid. I just want to go back to experience all the 80s goodness.
Holly shit! This brings back memories of when I was 7 or 8 and could stay up on Friday or Saturday and watch a movie. I haven't heard that music since I was a kid. I got butterflies iny stomach because it brought me back to that time instantly. I could see my living room just as it was set in 1983. Fucking scary feeling hearing and seeing this but in a good way.
Fuckin A It Was!! As a kid when I watched this, I always felt like I was in a spaceship, taking off from the HBO space hanger into lightspeed!! Everytime!
Whoe..I just realized that i was 22 years old when i was watching this shizz and it does not seem all that long ago YET if I project the same number of years forward from today..OMG I'll be 80!!!??? life is short indeed...
Wow. '97? I can't believe it ran for that long. 14 years. Can't blame them, though. It was a cool intro. The first time I saw it was during the premiere of the original Star Wars.
I love the music is awesome and i grew un during the 80's era and i used to dance with my nanny and i still love this intro much more than HBO Max the classic is always better well done friend is cool video
I wonder if HBO execs ever read any of these comments? It would be so cool to see this used again. Heck, they could even modernize it with CGI if they wanted but keep the theme the same.
I remember when I didn't have cable and had to have movies taped for me. I saw this intro (or a variation) when I got my taped recording of the Good Son.
Undeniably marvelous and wow hbo using this when Michael Jordan playing for the Bulls, HBO was channel 15, blockbuster and hollywood video both existed and prospering. I really wish HBO would go back to using this instead of the simple short hbo is shown shortly
I was so creeped out by this intro as a kid, but I think it had to do with my parents just blasting the volume so loud though. This and the Tri-Star Pegasus were my nightmares as a little boy. They were coming to get me!
Someone on reddit pointed out that you can see a dent in the top of the B as it spins around just before we go inside the O. I just watched it and said "I don't see a dent." and my six year old son pointed it out to me exactly where they said it was. Its on the bottom edge of the B. Anyone else see it?
When i was a kid and watched this i always though ohhh cool HBO is showing a sci-fi movie, of course that wasn't the case but i always thought it even if the movie wasn't a sci-fi one.
@joshywood I'm with you on that one! And I'm only 24 years old. It's a shame when a young guy like me longs fro an era that he either wasn't born in or barely remember. Nowadays junk are just bland or way too modern for my taste. I was definitely born in the wrong decade lol! Anyways, I've never heard this variation of this logo before. Very interesting!
Generally epic song from childhood. However, that's a real sloppy cut and music fade when it goes inside of the O. Obviously a different song. I prefer when it just cuts off at the right point.
Ohhhh ... what's that in the sky?! Ahhhh Oh mai god it's Jesus Christ Home Box Office! In the sky! Omy God! HBO in the sky. Oh mai fucking GOD IT"S HBO... IN THE SKY.. OH MAIIIIIIIGGGGG OODDDDDDD IIITITSSSSSS HBBBBOOO!!!!!

I loved this more than the movie coming on! Felt like i was flying through space by myself! Just beautiful! Teary eyed!
As a kid in the 80's, this intro was magic.
It was the good ol' days of Fraggile Rock, Beast Master, Dark Crystal and all those others.
this is AWESOME! thx be damned, THIS is the original "turn it up and blast you ears" pre-movie sound!
Being a child of the eighties, I was always enchanted by this theme!
This intro was first used on November 19,1982. it was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of HBO. It actually stopped being used regularly in 1993, but was used for the last time on October 31,1997.
Tornado1994 nope 2002 the premiere of Titanic used the HBO in Space intro
Shane Jones Titanic premiered on HBO in 1998, not 2002.
Tornado1994 I know that. I was thinking of Version 3 anyway
Holy SHIT! I remember this intro! This is bringin back memories for real. Thanks for the upload.
This was Hbo's best theme of all time. It was sad that Hbo totally quick using this theme. It brings back memories. Good memories at that! Always played great movies, sporting events, and documentaries. Thank You for sharing with us!
OMG I thought I'd never see this again, God I feel like a kid watching this again!
This intro made watching movies even more special like an event !!
I like how it was like something epic was coming your way...then it was Howard The Duck

Damn I could listen to this marvelous music all day and not get tired of it.
I have been trying to find this ringtone. One of the best memories of my life.

I actually can remember the day they discontinued this. November 1, 1997. A very sad day.
EPIC!!! :DDD
I always thought that the "O" was supposed to be the heads of a VCR when I was young.
Geesh I remember as a kid going to my grandmothers and uncles house watching this, my uncle used to say let's see what's on home box :) meaning HBO, home box office, we also used to play duck hunt and Mario on the Nintendo. Good times.

God I feel old after watching that. Brings back good times though.
what do we want? Time Travel!!!
when do we want it? Its irrelevant!!

I saw that special the other day. It's floating around RUclips somewhere. Amazing how it took them three months just to build the miniature city. And to think, they could probably do it within less than a week today with CGI, and have it look only half as good.
When HBO used to be awesome and affordable. I always loved this intro. Pure magic!
Yeah, Super Fuzz from 1980!!! I'm so glad I grew up in the 80s. It was the best time for movies, music and just being a lil kid. I just want to go back to experience all the 80s goodness.
this brings back alot of fuckin' memories.....I can actually smell the 80's right now....and I love it!!

Fuckin A It Was!! As a kid when I watched this, I always felt like I was in a spaceship, taking off from the HBO space hanger into lightspeed!! Everytime!

Takes me back to the days where a 25 inch TV required 5 people to get it into your living room lol
just waching a movie on my pijamas with my milk chocalete, and outside raining ......goddddddd i want those days back!!!!
this brings back memories
sadly i was born in 89 i didnt really see this much but my mom says we were very lucky we were the first people in our neighborhood to have hbo
I feel like a kid in the 80s again :-)
I must have this song as my ringtone
Bring back this bumper HBO!
Many times this was better than the actual movie.
Man, I miss this intro!!!
Undeniably marvelous and wow hbo using this when Michael Jordan playing for the Bulls, HBO was channel 15, blockbuster and hollywood video both existed and prospering.
I really wish HBO would go back to using this instead of the simple short hbo is shown shortly
I remember I was upset when they cut off this intro in 1999. That whole intro reminds me of my childhood.
Damn, I remember this. That was.... quite some time ago. But yeah, this intro-thing was epic.
@Vandal626 In fact HBO also did a little feature on how they made this intro.
I was so creeped out by this intro as a kid, but I think it had to do with my parents just blasting the volume so loud though. This and the Tri-Star Pegasus were my nightmares as a little boy. They were coming to get me!
To me, it was this and some of the early MTV idents scared the hell out of me as a kid
CLASSIC

@nintendoshoe until the mid 80's. Then we had HBO and Cinemax.
wow i remember this. one movie channel and that was it! lol
If HBO would just bring that back they would re-establish themselves as "The Channel" once again.
Back when hbo had a little class. But I loved this intro...
When i was a kid and watched this i always though ohhh cool HBO is showing a sci-fi movie, of course that wasn't the case but i always thought it even if the movie wasn't a sci-fi one.
Fuck I was born too late
FUCKING EPIC!! Thanks 4 the nostalgia! AWESOME!
Fragglerock and Super Fuzz!
@joshywood I am. This is one of my favorites with the HBO Fanfare.
@foxxymama1982 Now the cabel is built in the T.V., but that damned remote STILL gets lost. I guess some things never change.

Generally epic song from childhood. However, that's a real sloppy cut and music fade when it goes inside of the O. Obviously a different song. I prefer when it just cuts off at the right point.
Modern times kinda sick
@Turppa21 Yet the Closing Logo Group says that it was retired in 1999. Is that correct or not?
