Wish I could agree, unfortunately that video at this time as ~125k views. Most anti-sugar videos, such as Lustigs the bitter truth or John Olivers cover on sugar are in the millions. He needs a more catchy title and more in depth review to be more convincing.

Ha. Memes aside, not necessarily. Jeff puts research into a format appropriate for RUclips and his viewers (ie. not meant to be applied to academia, per se). Often methodological short-comings, or the significance of the variables, study population etc., are not always discussed. This is why people may come to such different answers when arguing something like sugar, in his previous video, because there are a host of contextual issues as well as misinterpretations just by accepting a published results (as is somewhat the case here, ie. authors concluded). I agree with Jeff (at this time), but I'm not in a position to be reviewing the studies as he has at this time, but that could change.

    • @JeffNippard

    • @jaywood1313

You can do cardio ,but it does depend on amount. Weights are great!!! The more muscle mass that you have the more calories you will burn at a resting rate. Plus doing cardio is great because it help promote things like blood flow and oxygen which is essential to muscle building. The best way to do cardio is high intensity for about 15 minutes 3 to 4 times a week. If you don't believe me look at the difference in body shape an Olympic sprinter versus an Olympic cross-country Runner. Olympic sprinters are normally Jacked and they do cardio. It also depends on your goals. If you are super skinny trying to develop muscles you may not want to do cardio. Outside of that do some cardio. I don't think you should do hours of cardio because it lowers testosterone and can affect protein synthesis. If your goal is weight loss due about 15 -20 minutes of hiit cardio 3 to 4 times a week

    • @LAskeHosting
      @LAskeHosting 6 лет назад +5

      @jaywood1313
      1. training philosophy and their weight lifting and cardio is set up for their specific needs because they have certain proportions that are considered best for their sport.
      2. If you are bodybuilder and you are in prep phase and you want to lower the risk of injury then you will not perform HIIT (p.s. your 20minutes of hiit 3-4 times a weeks sounds more like moderate cardio cause there is no f.cking whey for someone who is trying to lift as much as posible that he will recover properly and do HIIT perfectly 4 times a week 20 minutes per session).
      3. The best way to do cardio is to do what ever makes you happy and doing something that will hinder your goals might not be as beneficial as you think and at the end of the day its your personal choice ( do what makes you happy).
      4. How you look at the end will depend on how your weight lifting vs cardio per week session you are doing(witch goes back to 1.) if you want to look like bodybuiler doing as much cardio as you can might not be the best option for you because your body needs to adjust your BMI, BF, speed and agility, so that you can get better at your needs if you are doing it right.
      5. Cardio is cardio and you have to choose wisely depending on your goals, if its saving muscle HIIT might sounds good on paper and yes it works but at what cost thats the question... DO you see yourself 16 weeks later at the end of the cutt still doing HIIT and what will your weight lifting sessions looks like?
      6. I prefer (as my personal choice to not involve cardio from startup, 1st cut longer, 2nd cut a bit of calories, 3. Involve 10min walking after every meal anD only when that stop working start with adding evening walks and 1 rave per week (4-8H of jumping left right) :D - and even that 1 rave per week is killing my recovery like next 2 days but you know what we all have things that we like in our life, and thats what i like so Im prepared to take that risk and hinder my goals just so that i can have balanced & enjoyable life :)

While carb intake before bed may not affect fat gain, glucose will inhibit secretion of growth hormone. From my understanding, most growth hormone is secreted during sleep. Therefore, carb intake right before bed may not lead to fat gain, but could potentially lead to less gainzz. Maybe do a follow-up vid discussing this?

4:35 OH MY GOD. I'm telling exactly this to people, because this is exactly my conclusion/understanding based on years of reading through scientific sources. Finally someone sane who doesn't think carbs make you fat. I can't believe the world we live in. A product contains 5 grams of added sugar, or has "carbs" generally, and people lose their shit over it, meanwhile they don't even think about their fat intake. I could hardly believe what I was seeing when I recently read a post in a nutrition related group from an individual who seemed genuinely frightened by the realization that starches break down to SUGAR in the body.
And the idea that refined sugar is "poison"... Recently I was told to substitute sugar with dates in a spinach-peanut butter ice cream recipe I shared that has 300 grams of spinach and 30 grams of sugar. Like it matters when you have 300 grams of spinach in something. I analyzed the 2 variations of the recipe on NutritionData, and put their breakdown next to each other to show that there is hardly and difference in micronutrients.
Unbelievable... people are pissing me off so much on a daily basis 😂

      Your essentially correct.
The problem with sugar is it’s so calorie dense, and excessive calories makes one fat.
How about the person who thinks sixty grams of evaporated cane sugar is any different than processed sugar?

I feel like this isn't a "myth busted" the other ~50% expenditure came from being active which is something you're not doing while you're asleep, so in effect won't you be saving(fat) ~50% more from the food u eat at night ?

    • @lynks8

Yea. I'm not gonna lie, I just took an Ambien to go to bed and I'm feelin' pretty woozy, so maybe I missed it, but I'm fairly certain this critical variable was not addressed. Eating carbs around physical activity when GLUT4 is more highly activated dramatically changes nutrient partitioning for the better. Presumably, most people are not partaking in copious physical activity late at night, (well, one cardio-specific example comes to mind...but I digress). It therefore follows that timing one's consumption of carbohydrates to be earlier in the day, around exercise and/or other physical exertion (e.g. physical job, etc), would be demonstrably superior to eating them later at night when most people are largely dormant. I hope Jeff will address this in a future vid. Until then, I will continue to restrict my carbohydrate consumption during non-active hours.

I just watched this video for the fun of it, as no matter what information is being presented, scientific or not, it completely goes against my personal experience. The "science" means nothing if my body doesn't listen to it, although I wish it did. It's just a fact for me, that when I eat close to bedtime, I gain weight like crazy. Normally I eat a good size breakfast (what most people eat for dinner), and I'd have lunch, and then at night I just eat a piece of fruit. But when I'd start skipping breakfast, and eat my 2 regular meals as lunch and dinner, with dinner being only about 3 hours before bedtime, I start gaining weight. By the end of the week, I can grab a noticeable chunk of new fat around my midsection. That's how bad it is for me.
The main thing I've learned about these "science" videos? I'm reminded that "science" is fluid. What may be true today can be disproved tomorrow with newer information. I can't count how many times "science" has gone back and forth between milk being good or bad for you. Same with the cholesterol in eggs.

Question, now it’s not bad to eat carbs at night, BUT does it matter what carbs? For me i always have majority of my carbs mid day night due to sometimes fasting (not intentional) but my sources of carbs are red potatoes and sweet potatoes. For my last meal I have 3oz of each.

i wouldn't call this busted! 2 main points.. If you eat carbs late at night, the fat metabolism boost you get from fasting starts 6-12 hours after your last carb meal when insulin drops to base line. I'd rather skip the late carb meal and wake up in full fat burning mode rather than just starting it... nothing better than burning fat while your asleep.
Not to mention that you still have to digest and assimilate that food (which also takes 6 to 8 hours). I'd rather my body have full resting capabilities when I'm sleeping, rather than it working to process food! Sleep is where you do all your cellular repairing (inc muscle) and I'd rather not waste my sleep by having by body working on something else. (IMHO)

I saw in "trust me im a doctor" that they did a study on this subject and they found that the group who didnt eat from 18-09 loss weight and the other two groups, placebo and eating at night had no differens in weight loss/gain. They did same amount of calories. So why do you think they loss weight? Because of the insulin level during that fast, 18-09, or something else?

    Great video as always.
Check the correlation between melatonin and insulin levels.
One way to look at it is higher insulin levels suppress melatonin release which leads to worse sleep quality->lower hormonal release (hgh and testosterone) which if we look long term, eventually leads to higher body fat and less lean mass.
Other way to look at it is simply that at the exposure of darkness we start to release melatonin which proven by research, suppress insulin as our body is programmed to have a steady blood sugar levels during sleep.
However, I believe this is 1% of the whole puzzle, so people shouldn't be too stressed about it.

Thanks for the great video! Definitely provides „food“ for thought.
It’s also worth noting I think that not all carbs have been made equal.
Therefore it would also be of interest to address the role of glycaemic index and load in weight gain as this will dictate the overall energy uptake and density of the meal. It has been theorized that the rate of lipogenesis may be modulated by rate of carbohydrate uptake as well as carbohydrate load as a means of preventing hyperglycaemia. This has been a big problem in the consumption sugary drinks which have been associated with conditions non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as well as ectopic muscle fat deposition.

    Hi Jeff,
I have read conflicting information on these , so can you please help me clarify :-
    1) what will the body use in anaerobic activity ( 6 rep max ) when the glycogen stores are empty ( on keto ) ? protein or fat? And why?
    2) in aerobic exercise, first 20 mins the muscle glycogen will be used and then the body will use fats for rest 40 mins
    ( when training under 60% MHR )
So why can't a person start cardio with zero carb intake, if fats are gonna be used and no muscle proteins?
Because its recommended to have complex carbs before a 60 min cardio
    3) which will lead to more hypertrophy? - structural and unsupported compound movements or Isolation movements? And why?
If you are going to answer all these in the next video, then please let me know so that i don't miss it@
Really appreciate you spreading your knowledge and experience
    Thank you :-)
