      Well Rich has worked in the gaming industry for more than twenty years, working as chief editor for gaming mags, doing game reviews, developer interviews, speaking to console manufacturers, he's done it all for decades. From the 16-bit era onwards, Rich has been around offering insight into games and the hardware that runs them, so it's a meaningless distinction; he works in the games industry, loves games, and games run on hardware. Thus you'll frequently hear him rant about hardware and how it performs in the real world. The man's a treasure, frankly. We need a hundred more just like him.

      Not necessarily overclocked. The PSP was underclocked to begin with and they basically removed that limit for certain future games like GOW.

      @UCL5FK77d1MCeTtqEQMmmAnw probably not. Nothing drastic anyway. It might help with battery life if they release a unit to replace the 3ds, but it ain't gonna be playing BotW in 4k lol. This video is pointless really, there is no new info here and there is absolutely nothing pointing to a "pro" model of the Switch. The opposite actually, because Nintendo doesn't market their products based on specs or performance. Even if they increase the max clocks of it by ~25 percent or so (which is realistic) in some sort of hardware refresh, that's not gonna equate to a huge performance increase (though it'll help stabilize the framerate in certain games). They will emphasize better battery life, better screen etc before they'd tout better performance. Nintendo isn't Sony or MS, just because they released "pro" models doesn't mean Nintendo will. Personally I'd love to see it, there are a lot of Switch games that run like dogshit and it would be awesome to be able to play them at decent framerates and higher resolution. I just don't see it happening. I do think a "mini" version will be out within 1.5 years though, the 3ds is dead and the Switch can't replace it. Too fragile and bulky.

    If I was to to decide what chip configuration to put in the New Switch, I'd choose the Tegra X1 on 12nm... It's quite mature now, with power saving enough to allow it to get from 4 to 6 cores at the same speed (for compatibility), while also allowing 50% GPU upgrade + 6GB RAM (along with 50% more RAM bandwidth). This would allow the Switch to have much more ported games, while not being too extravagant to the point of raising significantly the price.

    Based on what you've said here, I think I expect a silent revision, now. That is to say, if there IS a "Switch Pro" coming, this isn't it. This will just be a revision of the existing Tegra X1 Switch line. No new branding, no indication on the packaging of any improvements, just a serial number lottery as Nintendo changes chips from one revision to the next.

    • @alexatkin

  • @lancerdawgpete
    @lancerdawgpete 5 лет назад +4

    I'm still wondering if a "Power Deck" can be made that incorporates the same hardware in the Switch, leverage their SLI technology, throw in a better active cooling system for higher sustained clocks...it could (maybe?) double performance on many levels.
    Downsides that I could see is that they would run into the same problem that affected consoles like the Saturn and the PS3.
    Dual SoC's could make coding for it difficult. Another is that it would bring the price of the system nearly double. I could also see a problem as playing portable would be less favorable as everything could potentially be demonstrably better. Finally, SLI is a pain in the ass.
    But still...it could give developers less constraints since it seems like Tegra (right now) isn't going to move past Maxwell.

      I really don't see too many games actually taking advantage of the 64GB cart considering the heavy reduction in texture quality. Devs prolly take most of the textures out and only leave the lowest res ones, which significantly reduces the game's file size.
      This could change if a more powerful Switch with more memory capacity and much higher bandwidth (atleast 120GB/s, I mean come on :/ ) arrives. Higher res textures are always the best way to make any game look nicer, and it doesn't even require more "GFLOPs" than that what the current Switch has to do that. Just because the current Switch has only 4GB memory with a paltry 24.5GB/s bandwidth we get ports that look muddy running at low resolutions on top of that.

      The X2 Pacal relies on higher clock speeds for it's 50% increase in performance (this is what this architecture allowed Nvidia to do, while using the same amount of power, 15watts). However, those higher clock-speeds results in much more heat. This would not have benefitted the Switch undocked as it would be unable to cool the soc down, aside from an estimated 20% more performance, but, at a higher cost. Clock-for-clock, the Maxwell and Pascal architectures perform very similarly. Both X1 and X2 also have 256 cores. It's likely the 8GB of ram in the X2 would've also been halved to 4GB to reduce power consumption and heat. Like others have said, X2 would've more likely allowed for better battery-life, rather than significantly more performance.
      Here's my theoretical comparisons;
      X1 Switch undocked;
      196 gflops / 384mhz = 0.5104166666666667 gflops per mhz
      X2
      750 gflops / 1465mhz = 0.5119453924914676 gflops per mhz
      Theoretical X2 undocked performance (x1.20 of X1)
      0.5119453924914676 x 460.8mhz = 235.9044368600683 gflops
      Which means X2 would only offer 40 gflops more gpu power, while costing more and likely still end-up having only 4GB ram due to power consumption and heat.
      Meanwhile, docked numbers would look like this;
      393 gflops / 768mhz = 0.51171875 gflops per mhz (X1 seems to be slightly more efficient at higher clock-speed).
      Theoretical X2 docked performance (x1.20 of X1)
      0.5119453924914676 x 921.6mhz = 471.8088737201365 gflops.
      Which means X2 would only offer 78.8 gflops more in docked mode than the current X1.
      So, my final comparison is how much of the gpu is used by the Switch compared to the full potential of X1 and X2, while docked;
      X1 = 70% (30% potential unused).
      X2 = 41% (59% potential unused).
      Therefore, it becomes obvious that the X2 would've been a waste of an soc for the Switch form-factor and this is why I believe it wasn't used.

    DF:
    Your Bloodstained and F1 2019 pieces needed to appear closer to the Eurogamer review publish date. It seems internally the EG writers have been instructed to leave important technical details out of their game reviews, as the editor tells them, "Don't worry, let DF do it."
    Fair enough, if EG's professional game reviewers (somehow) lack the ability to talk about frame rate and image quality, but then it's up to DF to provide that information closer to EG's review publish date.
    Else we're left with nothing to go on.
    Lacking this, it would be REALLY helpful if DF gave the applicable EG editor a brief overview of tech specs to include in a box-out inside the review.

Hopefully that means it will cost the same as the current Switch, which will either drop in price or be phased out of retail.

    There is definite room for a purely home based implementation of the Switch using an upclocked X1 or this new chip. Plenty of people just want to play Nintendo games at home, and a cheaper device without portability would be a way to increase market penetration. Hell, I'm sure many current Switch owners would probably be willing to shell out the cash for a system that allows their Switch favorites to run at full 1080p and/or better performance. Just needs cloud saving or some form of easy data transfer between systems.

      Hunter Brittell I would be fine with 3 years. And Iike the idea of a trade-in. Imagine if Nintendo had stores all over the USA and the world like Apple Stores where they could accept trade-ins. If they keep the form factor the same, then the dock and joycons could be used with the new console, so you would only have to swap out the old console for a new one.

    Nintendo is in big trouble if that's their plan. Third Party Developers are not going to be happy if they have to keep creating ports for a switch that is massively underpowered. If Sony and Microsoft aren't exaggerating the performance of there next gen consoles almost no developer is going to put their shiny latest and greatest games on the switch and we can't expect anything other than ports that come out way later than the ps and Microsoft launches or exclusives that are designed only for the switch.

    The thing that really sucks is that Nintendo makes it so it's annoying to have multiples of a device, because until the switch, each eShop game was tied to the Console, which is beyond dumb. Luckily they did fix that atleast, but the next problem is that not all games let you transfer your saves over so it would be more of a pain than it should be to say keep your original switch at home and have a switch mini for travel.

    I sure as hell hope this isn't the plan for the Switch Pro, as that is most definitely not the level of upgrade I was expecting or hoping for. I want something much more substantial than that for a Switch Pro. Hopefully this is just what will go in all base Switches from here on out as well as the Switch Mini, with the clock limiters still set at factory levels. Would still likely see better battery life and such which would be nice, but I really hope for something a bit more substantial for a Switch Pro.

    To me it feels like the new "Switch Pro" would have a better portable screen (probably OLED) capable of displaying 1080p in portable mode. And it would most probably improve it a little further in docked mode. It would also give some games the capability of going for 60FPS with lower resolution, such as Platinum's upcoming game "Astral Chain" which right now is locked at 30FPS on the standard switch model but the game would be amazing to play in 60FPS because of its fast paced combat.

    Not sure. If I had to guess I might say that was a cancelled version of the silicon.
    The GM20b is a Maxwell based design. Everything else Maxwell is also 20nm class (28nm TSMC) silicon. Pascal however is 14nm Samsung or 16nm FF TSMC.
    Nvidia would need to do a bunch of work to bring Maxwell down to a new node and that ignores the fact that these new nodes are FinFet. This makes things a lot more difficult for the designers.
    However they already have Pascal as a working option on either TSMC or Samsung (Global foundries licence the 14nm node from Samsung so Global foundries could also be a potential option).
    So I would think that Pascal would be the best solution here from a hardware perspective maybe not a software perspective.
    Alternatively AMD's RDNA was impressive enough to get Samsung to license it for smart phone chips and every other console is on AMD at this point. It might just be Nintendo's thought process to not release a gen 1.5 switch any more but instead go for a full gen 2 switch on RDNA. I don't know. But I certainly would not put my money on a die shrink finfet version of Tegra X1.

    I don't know, I think it is a mistake for Nintendo to implement different performance modes if the gains are this small. They should probably just shoot for better battery life and faster load times. Maybe some performance modes in docked mode where they can really overclock it to the max but other than that it seems like a lot of technical work on a devs part for just a bit of improvement.
