Still in shock and awe that RDR1 hit a Nintendo platform before (officially) being available on PC. Can't say I have much faith in Rockstar to do anything that wows me like RDR2 did anytime soon. Update: Yes we know.
@@cabecorra91I waited ages for it to come out on PC, so I wouldn't have to resort to emulation. RDR via Xenia on PC is the way to go, 4K and 60fps is possible if your PC is good enough. It's a shame though, I was waiting for Rockstar to remaster it so I wouldn't have to resort to emulation but oh well, here we are...
if you were to tell me Red Dead Redemption would be released on a Nintendo console 13 years later with a £40 price tag i would have laughed, what a weird time we’re living in
LA Noire on Switch needed a download with the card, so it might be around the same unless LA Noire needed more power. But there is no download required on the display box but we're gonna have to see.
I suspect that the Switch is what this port was about from the beginning. The fact that the game runs almost locked to 30fps at 1080p on Switch tells me that the porting team were targeting it specifically. I think the PS4 port was an incidental thing that came about after the Switch version was mostly completed and they had a code base they could move to other platforms, but didn't have the time/budget to add anything fancy to it beyond FSR 2.
@@Bee_Mavrickto bad you're insulting the community by buying it. I'll be waiting till it goes on sale and I havnt ever played the game! Im more inclined to spend $30 cnd that $65 cnd
Naw you are getting played. It’s a 360 game. And ps3 game that should be like 20 bucks at best (it’s a port) when you buy this stuff you get the last of us 2 remake for ps5 for possibly 70 dollars……
Due to pricing changes and issues with the Canadian dollar, this port actually ended up retailing for more than when it originally released. Very cool...
Meanwhile you can but it on Xbox for $30 CAD (plus $10 CAD for Unread Nightmare), with enhancements if run on a One X or Series X. The pricing for these ports is indeed ridiculous.
@ScrapKing73 Although I'm pretty sure Undead Nightmare on 360 is permanently bugged because of the patches which spawned the softlock headless undead glitch
It appears that some players have found that the light around camp fires can be broken at times. As in the campfire doesn't cast light or shadow. Hopefully this can be fixed in a patch.
Btw, even in this video there is a footage of Undead Nightmare, where Switch does not emit any light from burning bushes and whatever. So, now I'm 100% convinced that they completely removed dynamic lights from everywhere and instead are relying on prebaked lighting and sun position for shadows. That's really a bummer, sadly DF missed that.
There are a fail amount of bugs in this game, and I think they're in the patched original version 360/PS3 as well...I doubt Rockstar gonna patch in further than 1.0.1
@@jimhultqvist2539missing lights is purely a porting problem and it's Double Elevens responsibility. But would they care and fix that by reimplementing the whole lighting system specifically for Switch version? I really doubt.
I bought RDR used for xbox360 and played it on Series X and it just looks pretty great. I think auto-HDR can be enabled (not sure though, it's been a while) and it basically runs at a locked 4K. It does NOT get the Series X FPS boost so it's still locked at 30fps. Since the game was developed with 30 fps in mind, it's obviously still very playable. I do like that the the orignal physical release comes with an actual printed folded map of the open world to check out, which can actually be relevant for some of the missions and it's just cool to overhear a conversation where someones says "it's just north of X" and then you put down the controller tp check on the physical map and it's just... cool and immersive.
@@sandman8920 There are a couple of older games that look very next-gen-ish on series X. I’m very happy with a Switch game running at the native 720p in portable and 1080p docked and runs well, better than on the original consoles. So many Switch games run at around 540p and still go much lower in frame rate so this is very good. Should look good on the Switch OLED in portable mode.
@@arcanocz I mean....not really 11/12 years separate the release of those consoles from the Switch (and they were using tech that was adapted/developed years before the consoles themselves released) so it really is not some indictment of the power of the Switch that it can run them better -it SHOULD be able to run them better. This is of course assuming you're being serious and not facetious.
Gave the Switch version a go and found myself putting in quite a few hours. Much better than the PS3 version I’d attempted to play the past few years. Not bad.
I'm playing it on PS5 (bought it out of curiosity) and while it's a really solid remaster/port, it's one you where wanna wait for a sale. At like £10-20 it's a good buy. Fantastic game though. Still holds up well today.
While it isn’t the most revolutionary port, if you’d told me at Switch’s release that we would get RDR for it one day, my mind would have been completely blown tbh.
I always wondered why a developer would ever decide to use Anisotropic turned low/off.. I pretty much never found much if at all a performance penalty for using it, even on computers years ago.
I wished DF would do a piece on the usage of anisotropic filtering on consoles, especially on Nintendo consoles. I don't think there has ever been a single first -party Nintendo game with AF on, and I don't even think there has ever been third-party games on Nintendo consoles with AF on, in spite of the hardware having support for AF since the GameCube and their official dev documentation explicitly mentioning it. I dug into the whole the whole thing a while back and if my memory serves me right, anisotropic filtering implementations were all patent-encumbered up until 2015 or something and Nintendo not wanting to pay for it never used it. But I could also be 100% wrong. Considering how anisotropic filtering dramatically improves the look of terrain textures on games like BOTW and TOTK, it always rubbed me the wrong way that Nintendo chose to ignore it.
Same I loved that game. It's a one of a kind experience. It sucks that the sequel took a more generic open world approach and kind of fell on its face.
Rockstar and Blizzard will never come back because of "diversity studies" in USA. They literally hire people based on their sexuality and ethnicity, not skills and passion, which is extremely racist... But who am I to say that right I'm just one white male. Anyway, that's why we get passionless garbage on all fronts, in movies like new star wars, new Lotr series, Witcher on netflix, 90% of gaming industry, absolutely everything coming out of blizzard, Ubisoft etc

I'm one of those who was disappointed RDR didn't get a proper PS5/SX remaster, but at the same time, I think the Switch version has a reason to exist. Switch somehow never got a GTA5 port, and having RDR on the go is nice. Nintendo gamers don't get mainline Rockstar games often, so even if its years late, it's cool to see it exist.
@@lightdarksoul2097 It probably would've been a great idea to do a GTA4 port, but I think it's a bit late for that now when people are looking to GTA6. I have been playing on Switch and for me it is well worth the price. There is a lot of content here and even though it released 13 years ago it is still a high quality game. Rockstar games put a lot of love into this game and i never could have imagined i would play it on a handheld back when i was playing on the PS3. It still holds up and has fantastic voice acting.
I remember playing the game on both 360 and ps3 back in the day and being baffled by how badly the ps3 version looked. At the time I didn’t realize how hard devs had it when trying to port to that system. And it really shows with this game. The 360 version was far superior.

It's been awesome to have this portably, but it's a bit of a shock to the system as well. My last two playthroughs of this game we're on Xbox One when it was added to backwards compatibility, and then again on the Xbox One X when they had an update that took advantage of that hardware. So I'm used to this game incrementally looking better and better, and now back here on switch even in portable mode it's a little fuzzy and I feel like the draw distance might even be slightly worse than it was on 360. It's still a phenomenal looking game the art direction is great. About between that and then two playthroughs of Red Dead 2 which in my opinion is still the most gorgeous game I've ever played, this one is showing its age more than I remember. Of all those playthroughs I've had of this game I also don't remember the horses being so damn janky Either way I'm still excited to go through it again, this was my favorite game ever made... Until they made a sequel lol

I haven't played it docked yet, but handheld on the OLED is impressive. I've ignored the high price point and not complained like others (I get it's a ridiculously high price, but the cost of everything is massively higher than it used to be and remember, Rockstar are not forcing you to buy the game people), because I love RDR and have wanted to play it portably since I've had my Switch. It's ran perfectly well for me so far and I'm just so surprised it runs on the Switch. I'm wondering then, that given this runs fine on Switch, maybe the original version of GTA 5 can be ported over. I would love to be able to play that portably on the Switch.
This is impressive. I had this on PS4 and best it but I wanted to play this again and in handheld mode at times + I sold my PS4 game. This was one of my favorite games of that era and having a great time playing it again especially that I can take it on the go when i take my son to soccer practice with 1.5 hrs to kill. Hard to get in game time as a dad, but this is huge for me.
Buying this at full price is just enforcing Rockstar’s bare minimum efforts. Supporting this is letting them know that consumers will eat up just about anything. Goodluck with Rockstar producing quality anytime soon.
Buying this at full price is just someone saying they want to play this game on the console they have. I promise you there are topics that are actually morally serious, buying a video game is not one of them.
I’ve had this on Xbox since 2018 when it became backwards compatible on Xbox and i got it from the store with un dead nightmare for about £10 from Xbox store and it runs at 4K on Xbox series X and red dead 2 is the only console version with true 4K this is a total ripoff at £40 lol
@@ot9523 Yeah, it doesn't make sense for you to buy a game you already own and that you don't want to play again. What's fascinating is that people other than you exist and what people do for entertainment really isn't your business. Are the ports bad? Nope. Is the remasters for the GTA trilogy bad? Yes. Should it be $50? Probably not but that is up to the costumer if they want to pay that amount. Worrying about what others pay use their money for is just weird.
@jjproductionscorp well the pro vs reg ps4 doesn't really matter if it still runs the same as switch and 360 at 30fps but no multiplayer, none of the visual enhancements seem that much better to me if it's a compromise of multiplayer.
I played RDR on PS3 and over RGB Scart cables on a Crt. This Game looked so good. The dark areas and the sunlight gives RDR a really realistic touch on a Crt. I think these Consoles Ps3 and Xbox 360 were created with Crt in mind and not HDMI LED TVs. The most Games from this Generation looks and runs better on older TVs connect with RGB scart cable.
So happy about this port, wish more games had this treatment such as Fallout or Dark Souls 2. I honestly dont get all the hate, its not like the Switch could have run the game if it had a remaster and its clearly currently running the game at its maximum capabilities. I agree the princing isnt the best but there are many previous titles such as this that had the same pricing problem and nobody said a thing. Examples for this could be Dark Souls, Skyrim, Dying Light, The Witcher 3, Diablo 3 and many others, all of them released at full price. I kinda understand the hate it gets on behalf of Playstation and PC owners but for us Switch owners makes no sense. One last thing, I am pretty sure the pricing problem is because Nintendo is releasing the physical version, we have many previous examples of this.
The great part about this port is the from the emulation prospective with the switch version. I can now play rdr on my steam deck at 30 to 45 fps through yuzu and a 60 fps fps patch. It's also a good alternative to xenia on pc if you don't have a great gpu. I would of rather had a remake especially considering half of rdrs map was already remade in rdr 2 even the basic layout for mexico but at least something good came out of this. Rdr ages like a fine wine any way.
Def getting this on switch. Enjoyed the gameplay and story of this one more than the second. In the second every enemy used the same guns the entire game which made no sense and the story become nonsense after like the second heist. The multiplayer on the first was also better so it’s a bummer it is not included
With how little effort they seemed to have put into this port, I'm surprised they got the game to run at 1080p on the Switch at all, much less with a mostly stable 30fps.
@@WH250398 That’s why resolution and graphics tweaks exist. In an age where modern games all have Performance and Quality modes, I’m sure they could’ve done that for this new 2023 release even on older hardware. Was waiting for the DF review! Other RUclips channels claim they have tested the Switch frame rate, but they didn’t say anything about the drops at the farm. I’m traveling soon and I never played RDR1, so I’ll give it try. Thank you for a great informative review (:
Same. I have zero interest in this release. I can already play the game on my Xbox through backwards compatibility. I can't fathom why Rockstar didn't release it on PC. I'm pretty sure they like money, no? Lol
True, people can do what they want with their money, but the fact people will buy this bare bones port of an old game at a premium price pretty much sends a message to developers/game companies that we will settle for far far less and are happy to pay big bucks for it. So, dont complain when games charge you high prices for so little content (specially if ALL games are sold digital only moving forward)
lod is clearly improved on the switch, in your own lod section the buildings have transitioned to a higher quality lod the flag on the red building to the left is completely formed at 4:46 but yet to appear on the xbox 360, plus you buried the massively better load times
I actually prefer it's a straight up port than when they try to include every single visual effect in existance and do a port at 600p or something like that. I would say a locked 30 fps with 1080p resolution is fantastic. Making a port technically more complicated is not necessarily a better port.
I just got the physical version a few days ago. I didn't buy the digital version. I own the Greatest Hits version for the PS3 and the 360 version that Rockstar rereleased for the Xbox One years ago. I would say the Switch version is my favorite. The PS3 port is pretty bad. It runs at like 20-25 fps and looks bad. While the 360 version had 2x MSAA and ran at 720p native the PS3 port has no AA at all and it runs in 640p. The PS4 and Switch ports are the best way to play this game now. The Switch port looks better than the 360 version. I wouldn't even bother with the PS3 port unless you were really desperate to play it. But the thing that makes the Switch port so great is the handheld portability. You can play RDR anywhere. I don't regret spending $50 on the Switch port. You get RDR Undead Nightmare and all the GOTY edition content on the cart. No download codes. Two full AAA games for $25 each. Hundreds of hours worth of content. A game from the golden years of Rockstar. The pre GTAO years. It's an amazing games. It looks pretty good on the little Switch screen in 720p as well. I have bought other ports of games that were ported to Switch from other more powerful systems and it's kind of hit and miss. The Crash collection on Switch looks good Spyro looks good as well. But Destroy all Humans didn't look that great. But RDR looks really good.
Except you fail to mention the massive cut content of multiplayer. So no, its not 2 AAA games for 25 bucks each. Its 1 AAA game with cut content and 1 AAA game's DLC with cut content. Sure the performance is good and its nice to be able to play them anywhere but to omit such important negatives is crazy. Don't just glaze over it because you may love the series. Call out it's faults because you love the series.
Benefit of Switch version for PC players is that it's very easy to emulate and run at 60 fps, the ps3 and 360 emulators are cool but can be jank with this game. Still want a native port.
@@ChristianHedman Good point. Although, back then it was coding nightmare for the PS3, and GTA 4's port was a disaster at the time from what I've heard. Now the PS4 is X86 based like most PCs out there. So I think it's more likely that the PS4 version will be ported to PC.
Its still a 'great' game and offers a LOT of hours worth of gaming that won Game of the Year - now bundled with its Undead Nightmare (although removing its 'dead' MP mode) so that Nintendo and Sony gamers can actually play this classic on their favourite hardware for the first time in its 'Original' condition, boosted resolutions keeping the 'experience' intact isn't a 'bad' thing. There are 'Many' gamers whose 'first' console maybe a Switch, PS4 or even PS5 and never played RDR or 'could' play it on their hardware. If you don't think paying £40/$50 for what was considered the Game of the Year 13yrs ago to play on 'Hardware' you currently game on, whether you 'played' it before - its still going to be technically 'better' than the PS3/360 version just on resolution and 'stability' of frame rate alone - RDR2 was '30fps' too so its 'consistent' or not, then don't buy at launch - wait until its at a 'price' you deem worthy. I'm sure it will drop in price if people are reluctant to pay that... I do agree though, that compared to Quake II, RDR's price does seem somewhat steep but then that price is what a 'AA' game tends to cost these days and is less than the £/$70 that 'new' games are costing that may 'look' graphically superior but maybe don't offer as much depth or value in terms of hours worth, maybe have to wait months to be 'consistently' playable with updates/patches, wait months, years even to get the 'full' game as its drip fed as a 'service' game, be riddled with micro-tansactions, season passes etc etc... To me £40 sounds great for an Amazing game with so much value in it compared to £70 for 'modern' games that often are more 'style over substance', over in 8hrs and have many issues at launch - but as I said it does seem 'steep' for a basic port with what seems 'little' effort to 'enhance' the game beyond a resolution bump and more stable 30fps game-play - I'd argue its keeping its 'integrity' and artistic design intact for 'preserving' the Original experience and selling to those who cannot play it on their preferred Hardware as it 'originally' was - like Xbox gamers can...
Based on recent interviews of T2 Ceo stating that releasing a PC version is up to the Developers it's likely that we have another GTA trilogy remaster situation where Rockstar and T2 asked to have it be ported on all platforms but was not willing to pay much money and there for the Devs only agreed to port on to 2 platforms instead which is just ridiculous for a company as large as them.
Interestingly, the button glyphs appear to retain the artistic style of the original Xbox 360 version, whereas on the PS4 version they were simplified to more generic button icons.
This is a special release, I've wanted a full open world AAA game on the Switch since launch. Early LA Noir was amazing I will say. Having RDR1 bringing the RAGE engine to the Switch makes me hopeful one day we may see GTA 4/5
I don’t understand the point of comparing the Switch to the PS4. The whole point is to play on the go. Comparing graphics just seems silly, doesn’t it? One system is consuming 145W perpetually stuck to the wall, the other maxes out at 8W and runs on battery so you can take it anywhere. I would sincerely HOPE the PS4 would outperform. What’s the actual point? P.S. unless the point is to highlight how the PS4 version could clearly use and handle more of an upgrade.
The Switch has more sophisticated hardware overall, so it's not really that surprising it runs better. 360 had a 3 core @ 3.2GHz CPU vs Switch's 4 core @ 2GHz CPU, but also has 8 x the RAM as well.
the ram doesn't really do much besides of texture res. and loading times, also don't forget that when the switch is undocked, gpu clock speed drops down more than 50% and memory clock goes from 1600 down to 1331, yet the game still runs mostly smooth in native 720p. and yeah it's a more modern architecture but it's dated too, coming from 2015. overall i think it is a pretty darn neat port.
Imo xbox looks better than both and it has a lot to do that it runs at 1080p on ps4 but its not natural you can tell is emulated. Switch looks a little better then ps4 but it runs the game at 720p the natural resolution for it. I think the lighting and details are overall clearer on xbox as it runs in native 4k. But still you can tell it wasn’t a game that was supposed to run at 4k. Rockstar could’ve done a lot more to improve the quality of life like switching it to another engine
Haven't played this since original release. 14 years is just the right amount of time. Plus it flows a sequel to rdr2 now. Just awesome to play it on the switch oled. Hardcore mode is actually intense
I was hoping you would cover the odd shimmering around the horse and character when riding on the Switch version. I never checked a PS5 video if it is also a problem in that version. Otherwise fantastic port! Still don’t like the price but still loving the game again.
Switch version doesn't have TAA whereas the PS4 version of the remaster does; what you're seeing is shader aliasing. TAA takes care of that, Switch ver. doesn't have it.
It isn’t a problem in games like Breath of the Wild or Witcher 3, I figured they’d have a way of fixing it for this game. Shouldn’t be to difficult. Did the PS3/360 version have this problem.
to me the thing is if the switch can run this game while the 360 barelly could devs should port as many ps360 games to switch as possible no need for much enhancement beside resolution they are just good games, and everyone would be thankful, new gamers with actual good games (ahem the last hope), nintendo same reason, and us veterans, happy to see more people enjoy classics
What Rockstar should have done for the original release was have an option to unlock the framerate. GTA IV and its two Episodes runs on the same engine as Red Dead Redemption, and the framerate was completely unlocked and capped at 60 FPS, and as an unintended side effect, running them on Xbox Series X gives those 3 games a completely stable 60 FPS (as opposed to it having an FPS boost update by Microsoft). I think it's far too late for Rockstar to consider patching the game one final time on Xbox 360 to unlock the framerate, much less issue patches for the PS4 and Switch ports. I would want GTA IV to be revisited for Digital Foundry, and using that as a base to see what unlocking framerates would do in regards with backwards compatiblity.
Red Dead Redemption on the Nintendo Switch is an amazing game with stunning graphics and captivating gameplay. However, the price could be a bit steep for some players. It would be great if the developers could consider a slight price reduction, making this incredible experience more accessible to a wider audience. I wonder why there was no mention of the 4k 60fps version available for the 360 version when playing on the One X or Series? I wonder if it's because it would make the others look shit? I mean it even includes the multiplayer but what do I know about fairly mentioning things 🤔
This was obviously just a cash grab by Rockstar. But on switch that’s actually a decent port. 1080p 30 on a system you could never play it before. Maybe if it was $20 id say it was actually a good port for Switch. Introducing a masterpiece to a big group that could never play it before.

I just bought a series X about a month ago, and forgot that I had bought rdr on 360. I didn’t know they had upscaled the resolution until recently. Might try to play through it soon.
I'm sure this was just an innocent mistake or accident but it seems you forgot to mention the absolutely massive and obvious difference in cloud quality between switch and PS4. The clouds on Switch look like they're on "Low" or "Very Low" and PS4 looks "High" or "Very High". Not sure how this was missed during the analysis but it's quite literally clear as day lol
Other people have pointed out some other improvements they missed too. I think they just had a bone to pick with the port. Calling it lazy when it's clearly not. Like come on. They were just pissy about the 50 dollar price tag they overlooked the good stuff about it.
You know interesting thing about Nintendo switch. We get a full big versions of the games on a portable console. With a worse graphics, yes, but I remember the times of psp when we had completely different games with a same name. So, I guess, that’s the reason why Sony just don’t want to make a portable console again. They don’t want to spent resources to optimize or produce games on portable, because games is much bigger now, and it’s more time, more money to optimize them. Of course you can make something like Steam Deck, which is great, but it’s still a bit different from Switch, less compact and mobile. Curios what Nintendo would do with Switch 2, which is rumored to be twice as powerful as the first one.
I think they did different game with same name enough with DS now I think they want ports from other companies and if the switch 2 will be closer to a ps4/xbox one they have plenty of portable ports to play with as many games still coming out come out for those systems. Plus Microsoft wants to use what they bought in Activision to give Switch more games like COD. The switch has been able to produce amazing stuff and when their next system comes likely with backwards compatibility then they have a good start off with games
Yeah I just got a series x about a month ago. I had forgotten that I bought this on 360 digitally and was surprised that it was upscaled, but saddened it was locked at 30 fps.
If the new release would run at 60fps on my PS5 (and maybe even on my older PS4 Pro) then I'd have wanted it day 1. I know some people don't mind, but I really hate 30fps, for any game. I recently replayed RDR2 on PC. What a delight. Still hope to see a PC release of RDR some day, but until a 60fps patch comes along (or the PC release) I'll, sadly, pass. For the Switch, however, seems the 30fps lock was right. Makes me wonder if my future will see me trying the Switch version on my Steamdeck, at 60fps :)
To be fair, the ps4 isn't being pushed and the switch is at its limits. PS4 could easily run the game at 60fps at switch settings. they didn't even try, even the ps5 doesn't run it at 60fps

I was surprised to see this sandbox game ported to Switch, specially with a great port that improves resolution and performance of the X360 game. This shouldn't be so shocking (Switch is in many areas more powerful than X360 & PS3) but too many times developers has rushed games into switch with little optimization, generally giving more attention to home consoles versions, and we've seen inadequate 6th gen ports... or even 5th gen!
I feel like this was much more justified at the price point set for the Switch. We're used to having to sell our organs to buy old games anyway. I'm sort of kidding.
The multiplayer is a big sticking point for me... not that i NEED another multiplayer game, but just that it seems silly to lose functionality as we enter the future... i always thought we would make games BETTER, not mostly comprable/slightly downgraded....
I'm mostly interested in how it might be to emulate this Switch version; theoretically it would be the easiest to emulate, or at least easier to emulate than PS3 and truly make playing this game at 60fps accessible
@@istealpopularnamesforlikes3340 I want to play it again because it's been years! But I am one of those that feels insulted by the price tag. Looks really fun still though :) I'm gonna just wait until I can buy a preowned cartridge and not give any money to rockstar. And I'll buy a second steam key for baldurs gate 3 just to support an actually worthy game dev :)
Thanks to Rockstar, now we PC gamers can play this masterpiece 60ish fps on ryujinx just for free with a bit of the graphics enhanced like the shadows and the anti aliasing compared to the xenia, and for me, for the first time after 10 years, I have portuguese brazilian subtitles in the game.
I bought this for my PS4 Pro. Tbh - I love it. My only gripe is the price. I was drunk and bought it at full price, which I do regret. I was planning on waiting for a sale, but was off my face and went "F*** it" and just bought it. I'd say if you're not on Xbox - wait until it goes on sale. If you can get it for like 50% off - you'll be happy. My guess is that it will go on sale for maybe Halloween, but defo Christmas. Despite the hatred, I'm actually loving that it's just the original unmolested material being reproduced at a solid 4k/30. No GTA Definitive Edition defilement, here. If you originally played on PS3 like I did, the PS4 (and also Switch from this video) release looks and feels like a remaster. Its almost the same difference as Shadow of the Colossus PS2 v PS3. Basically the same, but the Remaster just looks a lot cleaner and the slowdown has been eliminated.
I loved Red Dead Redemption when it first released, I've put in nearly seven hours since Friday on the Switch version. I love it even more , I think it looks great . I had a nice amount off point's saved up as well , that knocked nearly £10 off
Great to know the port is great, I was eagerly awaiting your analysis. But tbh, after playing on PC with 60fps in way better resolution I think I'll pass on this one, even as a "in bed" option. There's games that really benefit from the fluidity d RDR is one of them
It's a shame that people hate on the port because the game's unfairly priced at $50 and no PC version, which is an issue I completely sympathize with and am also very disappointed at. But the Switch port (and I mean just the Switch version) is actually a really decent port and one that's only worth being excited about. Even better, if you have a hacked V2 Switch, you can unlock RDR's FPS all the way up to 60 with a certain tool which you fellas can look it up yourself. I'm currently playing the game handheld at 45FPS with a slight overclock and let me tell you, I am having an absolute blast. Which begs the question, if a hacked Switch can unlock the game at a higher framerate than 30 with an easy to install plugin made by some random guy or gal on the internet, why couldn't Rockstar/Double Eleven and their millions of dollar budget do it natively? The only reason I can think of them doing this is to keep "feature parity" across all console versions. In other words, Rockstar doesn't want to invest the extra penny to roll-out extra ports for other modern platforms (aside from the Switch and PS4) is because internally they KNOW Xbox and PC owners can either just run the game through Series X/S backwards compatibility feature or emulate the PS3/360 version on PC. They also probably didn't wanna deal with the headache of hearing players whine about "Why only Playstation? Where 60FPS on Xbox version?", so they kept the recent releases 30. I'm sure these were great decisions because now they've gone and got even worser complaints from players. Not to discredit Double Eleven's effort on the ports or anything, but this is still one of the plainest efforts put into porting a game. Though this is probably a decision born from the greed of Rockstar Games and their parent company T2 in the first place. So I blame these two for that.
I think rockstar did a good job with the Switch port, and i would agree that the price for a 13 year old game sounds kinda a cash grab, and the game is a port with improvements and not a remaster or a remake, but then again, it better than having defective editions like GTA Trilogy, hopefully they can fix those too!
I will say, I'm very curious what the next Nintendo console will have hardware-wise. If they stick with Nvidia, i wonder if we'll see DlSS and framegen utilized. Could allow it to really punch up
I highly doubt the switch successor will have frame-gen, but I'm almost certain it'll have DLSS. However, whether Nintendo themselves will use DLSS in their own games is another question since they're usually allergic to any form of anti-aliasing.
Switch 2 or whatever it’ll be called has to at least allow for 1080p 60fps handheld and 1440p 60fps docked. At least something comparable or slightly more powerful than an Xbox Series S.
Still in shock and awe that RDR1 hit a Nintendo platform before (officially) being available on PC. Can't say I have much faith in Rockstar to do anything that wows me like RDR2 did anytime soon.

At times? Never saw it being working there. Might be a bug indeed, bcs it surely can't be Metroid Prime Remastered lights problem, surely...
Literally unplayable

I’m very happy with a Switch game running at the native 720p in portable and 1080p docked and runs well, better than on the original consoles. So many Switch games run at around 540p and still go much lower in frame rate so this is very good. Should look good on the Switch OLED in portable mode.
So glad a PS360 game runs at 1080p 30fps.... The bare minimum.
No TAA makes it unplayable.
Well yeah, it's a port of a PS3/360 game and therefore much less technically demanding, most Wii-U ports run at higher resolutions as well.

AF is heavy on memory bandwidth in which Switch is very lacking.

This is Rockstar we're talking. It's coming next year. I mean that's what they did with GTA 5 and RDR2
@@Soup-man how so? This game was released thirteen years ago on console. RDR2 and GTA5 on PC was not thirteen years after console release.
@@ChristianHedman Good point. Although, back then it was coding nightmare for the PS3, and GTA 4's port was a disaster at the time from what I've heard. Now the PS4 is X86 based like most PCs out there. So I think it's more likely that the PS4 version will be ported to PC.
Im getting this on Nintendo only if the complete game is on the cart (screw digital downloads) and when its around $20.
I payed for the digital xbox 360 version in 2018 only 20€. Now playing it upscaled on the Series S.
Man, I'm hoping for a MAD MAX port after playing this on the Switch. It looks awesome handheld.
If it drops down to about half price I might grab it since it'd be nice to have the physical version, I just wish it had gyro
Especially given rockstar games don't have the best shooting so gyro would help quite a bit
Proper gyro support is a great idea and would've really added a lot to the port
Based on recent interviews of T2 Ceo stating that releasing a PC version is up to the Developers it's likely that we have another GTA trilogy remaster situation where Rockstar and T2 asked to have it be ported on all platforms but was not willing to pay much money and there for the Devs only agreed to port on to 2 platforms instead which is just ridiculous for a company as large as them.

This is a special release, I've wanted a full open world AAA game on the Switch since launch. Early LA Noir was amazing I will say. Having RDR1 bringing the RAGE engine to the Switch makes me hopeful one day we may see GTA 4/5

Well, seems like the whole "PS3 is actually more powerful than the switch" thing some people claim is actually dead and buried now.
We all know that the Switch its more powerful than the 7th generations of consoles.
@@WERV2003 I've seen people trying to debate against it though
@@WERV2003 sadly there are quite a few people that swear that its the case
I don’t understand the point of comparing the Switch to the PS4. The whole point is to play on the go. Comparing graphics just seems silly, doesn’t it? One system is consuming 145W perpetually stuck to the wall, the other maxes out at 8W and runs on battery so you can take it anywhere. I would sincerely HOPE the PS4 would outperform. What’s the actual point?
P.S. unless the point is to highlight how the PS4 version could clearly use and handle more of an upgrade.
Because both are video game consoles which have a port of the same game. Is this an actual question?
considering that both, xbox 360 and ps3 had a more powerful cpu than the switch, nintendo's little handheld is performing extremely well.
The switch is the stronger than the two. not by much but it is
The Switch has more sophisticated hardware overall, so it's not really that surprising it runs better.
360 had a 3 core @ 3.2GHz CPU vs Switch's 4 core @ 2GHz CPU, but also has 8 x the RAM as well.
@@corey2232 It's also a more modern system so it has more up to date tools and engine support.
the ram doesn't really do much besides of texture res. and loading times, also don't forget that when the switch is undocked, gpu clock speed drops down more than 50% and memory clock goes from 1600 down to 1331, yet the game still runs mostly smooth in native 720p.
and yeah it's a more modern architecture but it's dated too, coming from 2015.
overall i think it is a pretty darn neat port.
Great video Thomas, great editing. Keep it up, love you English voice accent
am i insane or does fxaa look more stable than FSR on close ups? that shot at 6:40 its very noticeable.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
It will be interesting to see what the "PC" version can do with it to unlock the FPS, AA and AF as well as other possible tweaks.
When you unlock the fps on Switch, it actually runs at 55-60

Haven't played this since original release. 14 years is just the right amount of time. Plus it flows a sequel to rdr2 now. Just awesome to play it on the switch oled. Hardcore mode is actually intense
I was hoping you would cover the odd shimmering around the horse and character when riding on the Switch version. I never checked a PS5 video if it is also a problem in that version. Otherwise fantastic port! Still don’t like the price but still loving the game again.
It's because of the AA method it uses on switch compared to the PS4 pro version
Switch version doesn't have TAA whereas the PS4 version of the remaster does; what you're seeing is shader aliasing. TAA takes care of that, Switch ver. doesn't have it.
It isn’t a problem in games like Breath of the Wild or Witcher 3, I figured they’d have a way of fixing it for this game. Shouldn’t be to difficult. Did the PS3/360 version have this problem.
to me the thing is
if the switch can run this game while the 360 barelly could
devs should port as many ps360 games to switch as possible
no need for much enhancement beside resolution
they are just good games, and everyone would be thankful, new gamers with actual good games (ahem the last hope), nintendo same reason, and us veterans, happy to see more people enjoy classics
That's what I thought the moment people confirmed RDR1 runs stable. Hell, playing classics like Saints Row 2 or Fallout 3 would be bonkers.
5:25 did you just call, what are clearly planar reflections, screen space reflections?
Yes, yes he did. SSR wasn't even a thing back when this game debuted.
@NukeMyHouse
True, but do we really know what technique Switch is using here?
Here's hoping for a little redemption in the form of a more affordable price tag!
I really don't think the graphics are stunning, it looks like a 2010 game
@@Al3ksandrOrlov While it's true that Red Dead Redemption was originally released in 2010, it's important to note that the game was groundbreaking for its time and received numerous accolades for its stunning graphics and immersive gameplay. The fact that it can now be enjoyed on the Nintendo Switch is a testament to its enduring popularity and the ability to bring such a visually captivating experience to a handheld console.
Moreover, the Nintendo Switch version of Red Dead Redemption offers several enhancements, including improved textures and performance optimizations, which make the game even more enjoyable. It's fantastic to see a game from a decade ago being brought to a portable platform without compromising its overall quality.

This was obviously just a cash grab by Rockstar. But on switch that’s actually a decent port. 1080p 30 on a system you could never play it before. Maybe if it was $20 id say it was actually a good port for Switch. Introducing a masterpiece to a big group that could never play it before.

I feel like the switch version shows how much headroom there is on the PS4 version for improvements
For sure. Ps4 shouldn’t have any trouble doing 1080p60 or at the very least 900p60. But they lazier it up.
I got the original physical copy last week. I've been playing the game on my crt tv and it smooths out the 30frames per second. Shimmering etc. I truly believe the ps3 was still meant for the old tv's.

I just bought a series X about a month ago, and forgot that I had bought rdr on 360. I didn’t know they had upscaled the resolution until recently. Might try to play through it soon.
I hope GTA IV gets "relaunched" one day....
Recently bought the Xbox 360 version on disc for 10 euro
On my Series X it also runs on 4k 30fps
I’m still completely bummed that Microsoft never enabled FPS boost on this game
Yeah I just got a series x about a month ago. I had forgotten that I bought this on 360 digitally and was surprised that it was upscaled, but saddened it was locked at 30 fps.

This shouldn't be so shocking (Switch is in many areas more powerful than X360 & PS3) but too many times developers has rushed games into switch with little optimization, generally giving more attention to home consoles versions, and we've seen inadequate 6th gen ports... or even 5th gen!

Could allow it to really punch up
We need better framerate for sure
I highly doubt the switch successor will have frame-gen, but I'm almost certain it'll have DLSS. However, whether Nintendo themselves will use DLSS in their own games is another question since they're usually allergic to any form of anti-aliasing.
Switch 2 or whatever it’ll be called has to at least allow for 1080p 60fps handheld and 1440p 60fps docked. At least something comparable or slightly more powerful than an Xbox Series S.
