Just wanted to comment Paul, followed your stuff for about 10 years or more and always loved your unique approach to the depths of max. Used max for over 20 years and your videos always show me something I didn't know hah. Keep it up man.
So, when i try to edit the spline, the geometry kinda messes up, also my helix is is not in the exact place as the final result, that's probably why lol but anyway great tutorial thanks man!
Hi paul! Im not sure if you take requests but do you know of a way to create trees procedually? I have played around with creating the trunks/bark the same way you showed us in the procedual rocks tutorial but I cant come up with a good way of adding branches without going in to very tedious modelling. Thanks for the tutorials and help you give us all! :)
Good question but I'm not sure my self without using MCG, Max Script or writing a plugin. How ever there are lots of tools out there already that people have created that might just do this.
Thanks for this useful tutorial. but when i trying to do this, the normalize spline part didn't work like you.. is this new update features? i'm using 3ds max2016.
Well you can do what ever you want with the spline. How ever it can cause twisting in the sweep. So it might be best to just an FFD at the end to shape it.
hey paul, I enjoy your videos since I started learning max, and you taught me a lot during all these years, so thank you! also, if you're interested, here's a rigging conundrum that I encountered when I was learning rigging (15 years ago already? whoa), and until this day I'm not able to solve. maybe when you're practicing your skills you may be interested in a challenge, or even help a former student out. unlisted video here ruclips.net/video/dCOkUhDTk9E/видео.html cheers!
Or just create one anim. key on extrude segments and change key value on trackbar... Or enable macrorecorder and change segs value above 100 there, enter... Although last one would be cheating cause that's also maxscript :D
@@paulneale Sorry, don't get it. Jt? I was referring to your "...need to use a line of maxscript to override...", offering other methods. And I was cheating in 2nd method (but good "cheating" cause that would be faster option ;D) Don't like seeing people overusing/"abusing" maxscript. Not you, can see yours UI not cluttered with "fancy" tools.
@@sentinelnode3773 Well I actually have thousands of Max Scripts running when I work in a custom UI that just isn't open. If you can work faster and produce a better result then you can't over use it.
I had to delete the previous video as the sound was only in the left channel.

Amazing work!
2024.2 now has the Conform modifier that makes this even easier.
Thanks for the information, I will try it too.
Thanks Paul!
Welcome Back. Thank you for this tutorial.
I didnt know I went anywhere!
@@paulneale there's nothing wrong with a 3 month vacation.

Well you are doing something wrong then. So make sure that you are following my steps to the letter.

You are on the old version. Time to upgrade lots of new features you are missing out on.
Cool solution. I wonder though, is it possible to get the helix spline to follow the shape of an object?

I make a kar 98 I want some bandages like thing on it . How can I make. A wrap on it . Does I have to deform all the wrap

Set he up vector for the piston and slider to be the point helper at each end. This way the orientation of them will stay aligned.

It is not cheating using Max Script. Just is just another tool like a modifier.
