Schin, you're amazing!! I've thought iroshizuku are too watery for calligraphy nibs, especially the rose nib. until I watch this video. by the way my favourite color of iroshizuku is tsutsuji躑躅. :)
Big fan of these pilot high end inks. Great colors and great bottles the larger ones especially. For me just for fountain pens though as they are a bit too thin for pointed pen scripts. I haven't tried thickening them at all though, have you experimented with that at all? Wonder if it not only might make the shades behave a bit better but also thin out the hairlines too maybe?
Yes these are rather thin for pointed pen scripts.. but as you can see in this video, it's not too bad. I have heard about adding gum arabic to fountain pen inks to make it suitable for pointed pen scripts, though I never tried it.
I have loved watching your videos. Thanks for helping us. I notice that it looks like you are writing on regular notebook paper. I would love to use the pointed pen for journaling, but have not had much luck with paper except the Rhodia. Do you have any suggestions on how we might use regular paper easier? I find the nib drags and/or there is bleed through.
I find that having a light hand helps because the nib doesn't stress the paper too much. Good thick ink also helps, thinner inks just bleed through. Maybe you can make your journals using Rhodia paper.
The colours are really nice, but the UK price is shocking. :-( I suppose you could decant some into a Dinky Dip or something and let the air get to it overnight ... might thicken it up a bit without messing about with gum.
+OpenInkStand Art & Calligraphy Some people are, certainly! On a more helpful note, I've found that Private Reserve inks tend to behave well with a dip pen - they also come in cheap and cheerful wide-mouthed oblique friendly jars. The range of colours is very different from Iroshizuku's though - more saturated. There's probably a trade off between dye concentration and flow characteristics.
Despite being watery, they are beautiful colors. I know you recommend the Leonardt Principle nib to start with. But my husband made a point that I should go for a really difficult nib, because if I am successful with that then I can use any nib. I was looking at the Gillot 303, 404, or Hunt 101. What's your opinion?
+Rachael Saavedra yes the colors are gorgeous. Your husband has a point. I would say the Leonardt Principal is a difficult nib for beginners, and if you can master it, you can master anything. The Hunt 101 is similar to the Principal but lesser quality. The Gillott 303 is a troublesome plus low quality nib, but it is handy if you want to do precise work and have great patience (I don't do both). Gillott 404 is friendlier than the 303, but I have no particular interest in it. Try some Principals, but have some Zebra Gs and Nikko Gs standing by just in case. Good luck and have fun!
By the way Yama Budo is one of my two favs Iroshizukos and the other is the darker brown Yama Guri. Have you tried that one? Kind of like a brown/black
OpenInkStand Art & Calligraphy yeah me either. Only one true brown I ever liked and that's Montblanc Toffee Brown. Besides walnut inks of course. I don't consider the Yami Guri really brown though. With fine, x-fine, needlepoint nibs it's really dark. Almost like a sepia toned black.
Jimie Chou she's using a dip nib with an oblique pen holder. Style of writing is Spencerian. You will need to learn that hand and practice using the tools before being able to write like that as dip nibs are not easy to control.
nana buster she's been a calligrapher about six year I think, we started around the same time, she's a good friend. I call her Yoda because the skill is just wow!
Always stunned by your instagram posts :D And always wondering what kind of paper do you use and what weight are they in. Also, do you mark the guidelines yourself?
Hi, I've been trying to find dark navy blue ink, is the Kon Peki blue ink in this video good? It looks like it smudges. Is that because the ink is too thin, or because the paper's texture? Which waterproof dark blue/navy ink would be the best? I heard Pelikan (fountain pen) ink isn't waterproof, so what other options are there?
this is probably the best cursive calligraphy handwriting I've ever ever ever seen in eternities
Most beautiful blue ink ever. I usually hate pilot pens…. Until I found a hobby of fountain pens. Love it never going back. Besides my spacepens.
Your handwriting is incredible! Such a joy to watch you work.
Beautiful handwriting!
+Fountain Pen Day Thanks! FP day rocks!

I'm amazed at the control you have over the pen, it's almost hypnotic to watch.
+Longshanks1956 Thank you! :)

until I watch this video.
by the way my favourite color of iroshizuku is tsutsuji躑躅. :)
+loveeatcake It is indeed too watery, but it works as long as you don't shade too much. My fav is yamabudo! :D

Hello Chin,

Tae care
mrbluenun
This is Rhodia paper.
You have good skills.
The colours are really nice, but the UK price is shocking. :-( I suppose you could decant some into a Dinky Dip or something and let the air get to it overnight ... might thicken it up a bit without messing about with gum.
+GenWivern2 Add gum arabic to a $30 ink?? You cray!
+OpenInkStand Art & Calligraphy You know what's really crazy? It's £30 here!
GenWivern2 US$44???? You guys are being robbed!

GenWivern2 I have some private reserve too, but the ink smears after it dries..

Wow, speechless...Schin, how long did you practice to develop that style?
Despite being watery, they are beautiful colors.

I saw it but didn't quite like it.. I don't like brown inks in general..
Beautiful!! wondering what is the name of the nib? im gonna get one!

What are the two scripts you are using in the video? All I can tell is the one that's less flourished is based off of Spencerian or Ornamental.
+watsup199 The first is my own version of a shaded script, and the second is indeed spencerian/OP
How long have you been practicing your spectacular artistry?
nana buster she's been a calligrapher about six year I think, we started around the same time, she's a good friend. I call her Yoda because the skill is just wow!
+Joe Villarreal Thank you for replying.
Yes, about six years now. Still a long way to go.
Haha I like pinball queen better!
I just cant fathom the reason behind the thumbs down?
How much the weight of the paper that u use?
great colors!
+johnny vanderbeck Thank you! :)
Always stunned by your instagram posts :D
And always wondering what kind of paper do you use and what weight are they in. Also, do you mark the guidelines yourself?
+Sandy Law Thanks! This is Rhodia paper, it is 80gsm. It comes ruled or unruled, the one I'm using here is ruled.
What kind of paper you use anyway?

SBMyee The ink flows really smooth and it’s really wet. That’s why it smudges.
Very beautiful
Hm. I thought Iroshuzuku was for a fountain pen, until I watched this video.
