Why, did you ever stop working on small machine,, that's profesional in it's selfie. Still watching and still learning.. Great video Steve. Thanks Scott
As soon as you got to the knocking sound I thought, "better to just buy a new one." I mean, I guess you could just buy a new engine but it's probably more economical to buy a whole new unit because you get a full warranty on it. I would also suggest getting an Echo as they are fairly simple to me as well as Japanese engineering seems to be of better quality than German.
I’ve had the the same fc-56 since 99 Changed the carb once. Still rocking. Could be a number of things for this unit. Ran awesome at first until you got into to… and then chain reaction. Love your info!
Liked the video. I have never messed with a 4-mix and may never, but nice to see how to work on one. I would have quit after the valve problem lol. Keep the videos coming. Your sound effects sound better then mine. James out.
Similar problems with a BR600, started with the carb, adjusted the valves, but the killer was the piston rod pin cracked the piston. Installed a new piston and finally ran like a charm.
The #1 problem is that it’s a 4- mix engine. 10 times the moving parts of a 2 cycle engine and way more places to develop an air leak not to mention heavier and bulky. They are also always covered in oil and grime. They do sound cool though.
I have a Stihl KM-130 Kombi, 15 years old, and have been working on trying to get it to run right. It will start and idle fine but won't rev up until the engine gets hot. Then it works normally. Adjusted the valves, rebuilt and adjusted the carb, new spark plug and removed spark arrester in muffler. Your videos have been a big help in my trying to solve the problem. This video is particularly good because it covers all possibilities. Don't think mine is worn out because as I said it runs fine after it gets hot enough.. Maybe ignition coil? Any ideas? Thanks
I have had a few 4mix modules fail, they don't tend to loose spark so much, I have had them not idle hot or take the throttle, also I have had the Rev limiter drop to around 5k revs, something also possibly happening with this machine in its running is that the 4mix runs the pulse amplifier diaphragm as with this design the pulse is not as strong as a 2 stroke, with the bearing clearance you have, I would bet you would have a vacuum leak, that would also possibly cause the impulse to be even weaker, possibly causing fuel starvation at wide open throttle, excellent video, that engine must have been neglected or have done high hours, I have seen the FS110 doing 4k hours and needing a cam wheel replacement at that point, that was with the Stihl oil at 50:1
Definitely could be the use of crappy 2 stroke oil which caused excessive wear or just wore out from excessive use. I don’t like taking chances with any commercial used 2stroke engines……I use the best 2 stroke oil money can buy for this application and that is saber professional 2 stroke oil from Amsoil. Use it you won’t be sorry!
My neighbor was 82 used straight 30sae oil to mix in his chainsaws he had newer Husqvarnas besides never had a problem except a little extra smoke for da mosquitoes 😂
One big problem with the 4 mix is the wrist pin on the piston has a pressed bushing instead of needle bearing. The bushing wears out and last I heard, can't be replaced
Sad day for the cutter. spare parts now I suppose, although it looks pretty rough. been well used I think perhaps. Peace. Have a good day out there Steve
Sooooo, I bought a Stihl 110 trimmer from a company that use to to vegatation control out on oil patch sites. It ran great for 2 years, then started running crappy. I adjusted the valves, rebuilt the card, changed all the filters, new sparkplug, & even a new coil. Still run crappy. Took it to my local shop, & they had found out out the piston was cracked. 😢 I told them to keep it for parts, I got a discount on their labour for all their work. The story doesn't end there.😂 Later that summer I found out my trimmer parts were able to be reused on another companys trimmer right in my home town. Saved them time, a bunch of $, & If i didn't donate those parts earlier, they would have a lost 2 days of working waiting on new parts.
You put up a good fight Steve but sometimes you just can't save them. LOL. I have had to have my sales people give this same death notification to our customers many times. Usually when they are trying to rescue the machine they left outside over the winter........
I just love your info. Your tips have been very helpful. I love to learn from those in the know. It has saved me a lot of time and money over the years. Thanks again. p. s. I always enjoy watching what beer you'll drink next. Nice add on! Keep it up Steve. Dan.
LOL. Its F*&ked! love the technical explanation.... and I laugh because I've been struggling to get one running myself and someone smarter than me told me replacing mine would be cheaper. so good to hear it from another source. cheers.
I would say it has to be from a bad fuel mixture. It’s expensive, but I run stihl’s motomix in my KM130. All the rest of my other stihl 2 strokes get premium gas and stihl oil, but my 4mix gets motomix.
Hi Steve. Im watching from the island of Tobago. Can you address the purge bulb and. Tube that goes into the gas tank. I have a stihl blower and when i press purge bulb that tube only sucks air. The tube is not all the way in the gas tank.
As soon as you said fs90r I literally laughed out loud. I unfortunately have this same model trimmer, biggest piece of junk I’ve ever owned. Nothing but problems since I bought it 5 years ago. Between carburetor issues, cam and valve issues, and now the coil is bad, this thing has been horrible. I currently own older stihl 2 strokes that are fantastic machines, the oldest is an fs80 from the mid 80s still runs great. My son has an fs55 that’s 15 years old now and also runs great. Personally I’ll be looking at echo or red max for future trimmers, no more 4mix for me thank you.
chose stihl for proximity and familiarity plus reputation. Man these machines just drop constantly. Yesterday had the muffler break off of my less than 3 yr old br800 that was repaired for 341 dollars in April. Muffler was on work order. I have Husq for saws, not without issues. Not sure who to run for everything else going forward.
Brother in law bought a new husqvarna put their oil in and after cutting for a week it dyed he had his son take it back for him and he said that he mixed the gas wrong and wasn't going to replace or repair it so his dad went down after work and told him showed them his gas can n they finally gave him a new one.😢 Pretty sad when they accuse the customer of doing it wrong especially when he's been cutting wood for years !
Yet another "10 minute" job...lol I've had that kind of thing happen too...my famous last words, "Yes Dear...I'll have that done in ten minutes!" (said with confidence) 😯
I was given a bunch of 90 110 and 130 that had been abused by a lawn maintenance company . I threw them in the barn for a few years and I thought I would sell them so I got one out and sprayed some gas in it and it fired up so I decided to put them all for sell and my phone went crazy so I pulled the ad and restored them all ( mostly rebuilt the carbs and fuel lines ) and started using them . I ran them for a few years then they were getting hard to start and running weird and I figured out the crank seals were bad so with new seals and gaskets they run great now . They look like they were drugged behind the trailer and I know they have been abused but the run great .
Since you've done all the expert diag is it sellable to someone whose time is cheap and labor unskilled for a rebuild or is it just a trophy now? Also, how to not let this happen on my 4mix fs141? 😂
Theres a way to fix it... Tie it to the trailer hitch... take a LOOOONG trip on the highway and when u get home ...Its Gone..... someone stole the wacker while u where driving.... Then go ur nearest Stihl dealer and get a new one...LOL
?Hey buddy got a slight problem. I own a NAC strimmer/trimmer. Yes its a chinese rip off item. I assume you may have come across these models. If so..... What is the best way to test the ignitor / spark stator. Both sides of the 2 wires seem to have continuity. If I connect to the switch on the throttle handle, continuity works both on and off. I know this is incorrect. 1 position should off/broken circuit and the other position should be ON/working and ready to start. Which is which please. I assume that OFF position should break circuit but is this Continuity or not via a multimeter.
Steve… would you move the ignition coil over to another machine to confirm the failure now that you know the flywheel to coil gap was constantly changing, possibly causing a loss of spark? It could still be a good used coil to sell or get someone up and running in a pinch.

Like getting old and going to the Doctor for the first time in a long while. Perfectly fine going in, but coming out, now that's a story.
Why, did you ever stop working on small machine,, that's profesional in it's selfie.
Still watching and still learning..
Great video Steve. Thanks Scott
The GOAT. You can't spell the noise it makes, but it could be word of the day!
Steve's description of it sounded an awful lot like whining to me. Waaawaaawaaawaaawaaa. LOL
Steve! Amazing video! Thanks so much for your time and efforts! From one Canadian RUclipsr to Another! Your Fantastic!
Thanks Erica!
Now that's some serious engine sleuthing Steve! Well done! 👍👍👏👏
Thanks 👍

Thank you steve great trouble shooting 😊
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
I’ve had the the same fc-56 since 99 Changed the carb once. Still rocking. Could be a number of things for this unit. Ran awesome at first until you got into to… and then chain reaction. Love your info!
Life was a mechanic I feel your pain. Love you buddy.
I don’t have one of these, I just like watching your videos!
Wow. Crazy problems.....i work for a DPW...We beat up iur trimmers and get what seems like thousands of hours on those stihls. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻...nice work
Liked the video. I have never messed with a 4-mix and may never, but nice to see how to work on one. I would have quit after the valve problem lol. Keep the videos coming. Your sound effects sound better then mine. James out.

Very good video Steve, the problem with the cam pin holes I know....
good job finding problem
Definitely a good boat anchor ⚓. Steve😅. From Melbourne AUSTRALIA 👍🤠
The #1 problem is that it’s a 4- mix engine. 10 times the moving parts of a 2 cycle engine and way more places to develop an air leak not to mention heavier and bulky. They are also always covered in oil and grime. They do sound cool though.
Absolutely right. A Stihl salesman over here in Germany mentioned if you like having Problems with your Equipment just buy a 4 mix engine…🤷♂️
I have a Stihl KM-130 Kombi, 15 years old, and have been working on trying to get it to run right. It will start and idle fine but won't rev up until the engine gets hot. Then it works normally. Is it Possible the connecting rod just needs a new wrist pin ? I've learned a lot from you Steve and I just wanted to say thank you. Take care. Rol
In the survey I said punt it rather than rebuild. Been down that road before myself
Is this wear a result of 50:1 two stroke mixture steve or poor quality 2 stroke oil? I myself run nearer to 40:1.
Thanks, will do!
One big problem with the 4 mix is the wrist pin on the piston has a pressed bushing instead of needle bearing. The bushing wears out and last I heard, can't be replaced
I label those types of work around my home as a "cluster*uck". Always great to see your vids buddy!!
Great video!
Awesome video!! I look forward to the next one! Loved the question and answer videos too!
Yay! Thank you!
Hi there Steve and April ! Cheers 🍻
I've heard from Taryl that these are problematic, especially when you do not use 2 cycle oil in these 4 mix engines.
Great vid Steve, thanks.
But as for an underlying cause? What's your guess? Straight gas?
When you put gaskets into the carbs with an accelerator pump are you putting a pump piston kit in as well?
Sad day for the cutter. spare parts now I suppose, although it looks pretty rough. been well used I think perhaps. Peace. Have a good day out there Steve

Steve, bad news for your buddy Dave but he still has a good friend, eh.
You put up a good fight Steve but sometimes you just can't save them. LOL. I have had to have my sales people give this same death notification to our customers many times. Usually when they are trying to rescue the machine they left outside over the winter........
Wow 😮 thanks for the video.
You're Welcome...
😂 “your brush cutter’s f”@&;d”! 😆
I wish more repair shops were this honest LOL
Rentals are not particularly treated with respect or care. Dave knows this. Tell Dave his rental company got their money’s worth out of it.
Agreed!
WOW!
TY for Sharing
PBR me asap! Great video Steve
Good job buddy 🇺🇲
Thanks 👍

Im surprised that thing evan ran with that many problems. Had to ne having trouble with it.
I just started working on one of these. Crap. Still hoping for an easy fix.
Interesting!

5 problems on this 4 mix weed eater 😮 that is a strange one for the books Steve
As always good video Steve !!
Heard the clunk the first time and immediately thought "It's toast!" The further revelations rather confirm that opinion.
Thank you for sharing ☮️💟☯️
thanks steve!

how many working hours is it? Which model exactly?
great beer
Bad day on the ranch there buddy.
Cost of repairs, $798. Cost to produce in, edit, and star in video.. $702. Additional charges, beverages, $1500.. total cost, $3000. 🎉
Thanks' Steve Who's Idea was it to get away from the old reliable 2 cycle. 4 mix is just a bad idea.
I’d like to see an hour meter on these units as an option
You know it’s toast and multi component wear out at a certain use time
Manufacturers say 50:1 for modern stuff. I still run 40:1 in them. 50:1 is too lean. So I’ve never heard it called 4 mix. Only 4 stroke or 2 strokes
Sometimes you just can't win SteveO 😂😂. 5 problems 5 beers, call it a day 😉. Always a great video! STEVE OUT 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Good one!
Great vid Steve!
Thank You...
I need a video on how to start a hard starting Stihl Farm Boss faster & easier.
Well at least now you have a rebuilt carburetor for another job hahaha
The quality and new (innovations) that Stihl has is going downhill and yet they still charge premium prices for their equipment!
Yet another "10 minute" job...lol I've had that kind of thing happen too...my famous last words, "Yes Dear...I'll have that done in ten minutes!" (said with confidence) 😯
Some days you're the windshield. Somedays you're the bug. Toss it in the scrap bin and move on.

Also, how to not let this happen on my 4mix fs141? 😂
Second video I've seen you drinking a P.B.R.😂 But yeah that's toast who would have thought it could be that messed up ehh
Theres a way to fix it... Tie it to the trailer hitch... take a LOOOONG trip on the highway and when u get home ...Its Gone..... someone stole the wacker while u where driving.... Then go ur nearest Stihl dealer and get a new one...LOL
I hope Steve got paid for all this effort.
Why would they make a cam wheel out of plastic? Cost? Run to fail?
?Hey buddy got a slight problem. I own a NAC strimmer/trimmer. Yes its a chinese rip off item. I assume you may have come across these models. If so..... 👍
Did it have line guard on ?
yes
Just for future knowledge that's spelled " Wamwhawamwhawam". I hope that helps
Time to roll it up and light it...she smoked🤣👍
Why ????
Not the right Mix of Petrol and Stihl Super or Ultra 4 Mix oil???
Stihl do not recommend the use of Standard 2 stroke oil in a 4 Mix Engine,
That thing is WORE OUT
Wow, this 4 cycles engine sure ran out of oil or had the wrong type of oil in it ! Or perhaps, was it used upside down for too long ?
Excellent video, but PBR, blaaaaaaa
Steve… would you move the ignition coil over to another machine to confirm the failure now that you know the flywheel to coil gap was constantly changing, possibly causing a loss of spark? It could still be a good used coil to sell or get someone up and running in a pinch.
Why not just get a replacement power head?
Should have bought a Japanese brush cutter.
My audio failed just as you were going to tell your buddy Dave what was wrong with his brush cutter. What was wrong with it again?????
Where's the tear down video to prove your diagnosis....?
If you watched the video he said he started the video after he took it apart
PBR. Hmmm.
Dave's gonna be pissed.
Sounds like it should have been scrapped for parts from the beginning and the customer told just to go buy a new one.
Your bush cutter is fu? What does that mean in Canadian A? 🤔
How was it running with a broken connecting rod???
FINALLY
Gonna need a bigger drink
