Played Lufia so long ago, over 15 years, but played rise of the sinistrals last april on 3ds (digital eshop). Will play the third and replay the first again very soon hopefully. Great video, very diverse coverage of trilogies.
That is what made it the odd sun the first 2 had you go thru a lot but the 3rd felt rushed them easy battles and puzzles and the end content which was lacking yes it was fun enjoyable the story was going into a good place but then it was over and we all know we will not get that 4th game
Shadow Hearts! I loved the pacing of the games and how the stories were segmented into episodic pieces and how each character got their own moment to shine. The call outs to pop culture like the Metal Gear section with Blanca and the X-Files moments made them insanely great.
Personally I would have included The Erdrick Trilogy, and the Zenithia Trilogy from the Dragon Quest franchise. Dragon Quest's Erdrick Trilogy is the earliest trilogy I know of, and certainly the first one I ever played seeing as how Dragon "Warrior" was the first JRPG I ever played because it came bundled with my NES. The Zenithia Trilogy of DQ4-6 is fantastic! Despite there being something of a controversy as to whether or not it's a proper trilogy I would also have included the Fire Emblem Fates trilogy of Birthright, Conquest and Revelation seeing as they're 3 completely different storylines with different maps, and goals.
Was a fun watch for the wife and I and subbed to boot :). REALLY looking forward to the Trails of Cold Steel this summer getting it's western release on Ps4 and wife and I are ordering the .hack series for us in April as this is our 3rd time seeing it high on other channels too so we want to invest our time in it now :),
great top 10, i would have put the utawarerumono trilogy somewhere in the middle; i can understand how rpg-fans find it hard to get into since 70% of its content is visual novel but hey, it has one of the best universe i have experienced among all the series i played; add to this the amazing battle system and the music.. that's definitly a story heavy serie i would recommend
Finally someone who understand how good the Ar Tonelico series is, Qoga was the reason i bought my PS3 AND a new one when my first one broke. And to be honest, AT1 and AT2 are part of the reason why i keep my PS2 (the other reason is Persona 3, even when i own a PSP and P3P)
The Ar Tonelico series is, fortunately, not that underrated anymore. Every now and then I meet someone who loves the games and praises them. The three are great games without a doubt. I've never played Ar No Surge, but I'm looking forward to it. I hope it is as good as its predecesors.
I can´t say the same thing. Here in Uruguay the games we can find in the local market are, mostly, the most popular ones (i use amazon) so, other than the FF series, almost any JRPG is available, and ever if they are, the price of any of them is two or three times the normal price compared to the USA market (i bought my Fairy Fencer F for PS3 in amazon for U$S50 and almost a year later i saw it in a local store for U$S 200 and i think it was used) so the people who just want to kill time with some games would rahter spend the money in an easy to understand game that in a heavy story based JRPG. I have Ar No Surge for the PS3 but i haven´t played yet, i want to finish some of the PS4 games first,, specifically Utawarerumono Mask of Truth and Ni No Kuni 2
Oh man... I love Trails in the Sky! 400 hours later I managed to get through 1 and 2. What can I say, I feel compelled to grind and do every side quest because in this game it affects your bracer score. Will have to go back to see what you said about the 3rd one... Now I'm grinding through Trails of Cold Steel (even though it came out a while ago - cant keep up.) after which Is TOCS 2. I hear #3 might come over but it's on the PS4 not the Vita like the other two. I almost only play on handheld and am sad the Vita isn't supported though Japan is still getting some titles besides visual novels. Thanks again for your great video!
xenosaga is super cheap until you get to episode 3! i finally broke down and bought episode 3 ended up making an offer on ebay and got it for $65... under market average but still pricey
Beg to differ, Golden Sun is actually is actually supposed to be a single game but tech restrictions at the time made it impossible to fit the game into a cartridge, that's why it technically became 2 games. Golden Sun: The Dark Dawn is supposed to be a a sequel to the GBA games, thus making it the 2nd game in the series. While that is technically so, It should be counted as the first in it's own saga since it now follows the adventures of the GBA games' offspring. But I agree, Golden Sun is one of the best JRPG out there. That said, I wish Camelot would come back to this series.
In my opinion Working Designs had done more for the JRPG Scene that any other provider in the early times. It is thanks to them that we have some masterpieces that were an influenced the new works and that still today are very well regarded in terms of story telling.
Great list! Of your list the only trilogy I have finished completely is Trails in the Sky and I loved it. Played the first one in the Gagharv trilogy for a few hours. I liked the artwork and characters but the gameplay was so dull I got bored. I have the Xenosaga trilogy but stopped playing the first one halfway for a reason I cannot remember. Really should play it one day since it was great. .hack//G.U. looks interesting and I see that the remake of the trilogy is already on Steam, I should add it to my wishlist.
Great video! I just started watching your channel and I love it. Just got into playing JRPG so I love seeing your recommendations! Definitely going to start investing into so of these. 👍
One of my all time favorites and the main reason I still have a PS2 hooked up to my TV. You didn't mention it, but not only did they change the art style, but the combat mechanics in every game, as well. Too bad the 2nd didn't sell as well - I've read they were planning on a longer series. At least they got to end the trilogy in style.
it was their own fault in my opinion for screwing up the art direction and over complicating the battle system. though i am happy 3 somewhat redeemed the series for fans. not for sales obviously but at least we got the 3rd game!
Hey Erick, you keep praising the Hack.GU trilogy and I just wonder how you compare it to the first .hack quadrilogy? I don’t remember you mentioning it
Legend of heroes is the only Jrpg series that I managed to play trough all 7 games possible to play in english in just a few months without ever getting bored ( Zero & AO got translation patches). Order from my favorite to least favorite Ao > SC > Zero > FC > CS > 3rd > CS2.
falcom, gust und xeno games - i´m happy :F ar tonelico 2, zero/ao no kiseki and xenogears are my fav games, but i love every game in their corresponding series (even love the ghargav trilogy especially a tear of vermillion)
I recently did my 3rd playthrough of .Hack GU. Love the series. Just played the recode as well. :) Xenosaga is also one of my favorite series. Though I personally think Xenosaga 3 was well done. 2 sucks.
Agreed. And on a side note, there actually is a third game (which is the second, actually) called Radical Dreamers but it only came out in Japan and was released for a very strange console. If you watch my video about series that need to be resurrected, you'll get the explanation.
Remake the golden sun games into one game and release with updated graphics!!! It was supposed to be one game anyway! Easy slam dunk of a game. JUST DO IT NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE, DONT LET YOUR DREAMS BE DREAMS JUST DO IT!!!!!!!
legend of heroes is generic dull JRPG garbage. it is literally the most bland JRPGs I've ever played and I've played Last Rebellion..... love the rest of your list tho, Azoth of Destiny is a personal fav of mines
Golden Sun and Legend of Heroes are one of the best sagas by far... I know it is my opinion but needed to say it
Just got .hack for PS4 based on the recommendation from this video. Gonna start playing it tomorrow!
Played Lufia so long ago, over 15 years, but played rise of the sinistrals last april on 3ds (digital eshop). Will play the third and replay the first again very soon hopefully. Great video, very diverse coverage of trilogies.
Golden Sun 3 was amazing. Loved the summons. Loved the djinns. Was a bit too short though . Loved the world setting.
The call outs to pop culture like the Metal Gear section with Blanca and the X-Files moments made them insanely great.
ahhh you are a man of culture as well. shadow hearts banzai!

The Iris Trilogy was my favorite Atelier series. DotHack//GU was on-point too.

Thank YOU for your feedback and sharing your opinion!
I need another working ps2 so I can finish Xenosaga! Only played the first. And Golden Sun was my favorite hand held rpg for a very long time.
Man Xenosaga and Shadow Hearts, 2 of the most expensive series i own lol.
xenosaga is super cheap until you get to episode 3! i finally broke down and bought episode 3 ended up making an offer on ebay and got it for $65... under market average but still pricey
I am so jealous, I still need X3 to complete my trilogy. I am planning to get it next year.
@@jrpgsonly4760 thank god for emulation. 16:9 screen HD resolution.. no need for that box
@@jrpgsonly4760 good timing, apparently its going for $200+ now

Thought I'd see the Shining Force trilogy make an appearance
Awesome list, The Wild Arms series is good as well.
Glad to see Xenosaga getting some love. Most people seem to either don't know about it or stayed away due to poor critical reception.
It's an amazing trilogy, one of the best!

Good titles! My #1 jrpg is the tales series

I really like your videos, man. Keep up the good work. Saludos desde Puerto Rico.
Gracias!!!
yes, Arc the Lad is great; love Lufia and Xenosaga also
The Golden Sun games are good, but the third one was a little lacking. It wasn't bad, but just didn't seem as engaging as the first two.
Vandal Hearts is awesome. Shining Force trilogy is one of the best, but only the first game was released in america :(
14:46 Slight correction, the mmorpg in the hack series is not called THe World, but : Za Warudo.
Always waiting for you to make this joke.
at long last! someone talking about shadow hearts and hack g.u!
great games!
Yeah!
falcom, gust und xeno games - i´m happy :F
ar tonelico 2, zero/ao no kiseki and xenogears are my fav games, but i love every game in their corresponding series (even love the ghargav trilogy especially a tear of vermillion)
My favorite Jrpg trilogies will always be the dragon quest zenithia trilogy and the golden sun trilogy hoping for a new one.
Golden Sun is my favorite JRPG of all time. It's not the best but it's my best.
Have you tried mana khemia 1 and 2? If you're not I recommend you to play it, especially mana khemia 1
A lot of games from the ps2... good console!
Ps: Tony’s chocolonely ftw!
I love Shadow Hearts
I add this as an honorable mention: the Final Fantasy Legend games on Gameboy.
I recently did my 3rd playthrough of .Hack GU. Love the series. Just played the recode as well. :)
Xenosaga is also one of my favorite series. Though I personally think Xenosaga 3 was well done. 2 sucks.
Im still waiting for golden sun 4. I need the story conclusion
good list, thanks
If the serie Crono at least would have a third game 😑( would be crono trigger, crono cross and crono breaker )
WOULD BE THE BEST RPG TRILOGY EVER.
Agreed. And on a side note, there actually is a third game (which is the second, actually) called Radical Dreamers but it only came out in Japan and was released for a very strange console. If you watch my video about series that need to be resurrected, you'll get the explanation.
very interesting video, you could do a top with the sci fi rpg's?
Good idea.
Pretty sure Golden Sun was just two games. The third one is suppose be a new story altogether.
ERGO PROXY AWESOME
YEAH!
Have you played Xenoblade Chronicles, the spiritual successor of Xenosaga?
Yes. I thought it was good but something about it didn't quite catch me; I think it's overrated "/ But it's still a great game.
What about Grandia?
The next two Lufia games sucked in my opinion.
Seems like the moral of the story is that the third game is usually the worst. :(
Remake the golden sun games into one game and release with updated graphics!!! It was supposed to be one game anyway! Easy slam dunk of a game. JUST DO IT NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE, DONT LET YOUR DREAMS BE DREAMS JUST DO IT!!!!!!!
As Emperor Palps once said... DEW IT
Gotta get .hack for ps4
Ar Tonelico is the only one of those that is actually a trilogy. Nice video however.
Fucking .hack got a #1 in *something*? Wooooah hooold your horses there. There's no way it's THAT good.
It is, in my opinion.
Erick Landon RPG
I'm gonna replay Infection and then try GU.
I'll report back in 8 months with my findings.
the theme song for xenosaga's second miltia sucks. sounds like someone just banging the piano keys at the beginning.
I'm sorry, but xenosaga is a disapointment, the first is great, the second veeeery inferior and the last made me cry...
Thanks for sharing your opinion.
Its not Iapan, it's Japan, haha
Haha. Asshole.
legend of heroes is generic dull JRPG garbage. it is literally the most bland JRPGs I've ever played and I've played Last Rebellion.....
love the rest of your list tho, Azoth of Destiny is a personal fav of mines
I'm starting to think I should have put Dark Souls instead of Legend of Heroes. I don't think they're garbage, but they're far from being great games.
Erick Landon RPG. Yeah .you should put dark souls or the witcher
The Witcher is not a JRPG.
Erick Landon RPG sorry
No worries. But I agree with Dark Souls, it's much better at least than the first Legend of Heroes trilogy.
