It’s like when you are old, sitting in the quite afternoon sun and almost fall asleep. As you dozing off, you start to think of the youthful time spent with the love of your life whom somehow you lost along the way. You still remember how beautiful she was and how happy the moment was with her, yet you can never find her again.

Gitlis makes this music sound as if it came from all ages, beyond any time. There's love in it, vulnerability, wisdom, joy, and timelessness.
You see some people feeling touched. Not because he's an old man, but because he reveals something that not many can reveal. As for that, his age might be helpful, I guess...

I know this isn't the best performance by Ivry Gitlis or the best version of Sicilienne, but this rendition is overloaded with expression and has heart. To me, this is what musical pieces should be, imperfect yet expressive. Missed notes often become identities of certain timeless greats. This is one such performance.

Maria Theresia von Paradis did not compose this piece of music whose melody and harmony are clearly not from a person who was born in 1759 and died in 1824. It is well known that it is a fake created some time in the 20th Century by Samuel Douchkine (1891-1976) who claimed to have discovered it and who was inspired by a theme from the violin sonata (opus 10 no. 1) by Carl Maria von Weber. Of course this has nothing to do with the deeply touching rendition of maestro Gitlis. Thank you for sharing.
