Somethimes I just remember it and I go this was so badass to hear. First you hear the little music you when you spawn and suddenly a sick guitar riff starts playing.
The joyful tune of this song is a wonderful double edged sword. It represents safety and innocent adventure. However, every time you dip into Metroid territory, you lose that security with either ominous "bugs" in the speakers or oppressive Temple music. It's so welcoming when you come back into it but it becomes all the more taxing when you have to leave it behind.
It's fantastic. There are few scarier moments in games than when this song stops and is replaced by what sounds like alien insects literally crawling around inside your Gameboy's speakers. It's just as tense every time.
It also contrasts well with the tone of the game's ending. Before, as you said, there was this innocence and sense of adventure, as Samus braces herself to put an end to "the Metroid threat" once and for all. Afterwards... there is this reflective atmosphere, as Samus actually comes to regret the genocide she just commited, which basically made her the equivalent of what Ridley was to her. All that joy from the beginning, all that heroic and adventurous feeling of "saving the galaxy"... *gone.* _Reality hit like a brick._ And to top it all off, there's the added melancholy of the last surviving Baby Metroid, which gives us a sliver of innocence too (even in the music), but that is dwarfed by the tragic circumstances that the poor little hatchling is oblivious to. It's entire family, *slaughtered.* Its home, *destroyed.* And it has imprinted *on the very killer of its family.* _Yeah, Samus was not feeling alright by the end of Metroid II._
@@cupriferouscatalyst3708 I honestly really like when you leave the surface area to one of the transition areas, and you just hear a "Bong!" that leads into near total silence. That's probably the one element I love the most in this game - that more than anything else really cemented the atmosphere of the world you're exploring, the fact that you're totally alone in this dangerous environment.
Because the people of Japan only care about, Anime, Porn/Sex, and Cute characters. Metroid fits neither of this. Nintendo HQ is in japan, and they have the "Japan first" mindset.

I can't remember which cereal it was, or anything about our visit with family but my brother and I always remember playing Metroid II for a week straight in St. Louis.
Actually I had no problem navigating through this game without a map. Once you've figured out, how the world is structured, it is not that confusing anymore. Only the simplistic graphics made it sometimes hard to distinguish different places from another.
I played through it with the Nintendo Power map about three times as a kid. I replayed it at age 27 without a map, and I was amazed that I didn't get lost; I was actually able to remember where everything was and finish it.
Same thing as Metroid ii: return of Samus and Metroid zero mission are the two 2d Metroid games that I haven’t played until now. I can now play Metroid ii for the first time. After then I needed to track a physical copy of the 2017 3ds remake samus returns and also wait until Metroid zero mission gets released as part of switch game boy online games.
I played this one for the first time recently, and was shocked at how good it is! My first Metroid game was Fusion, beat it about 13 or so years ago, and since then I'd been a fan and had played every single 2D Metroid game except this one. I feel like the reason for that was just that I didn't really like the NES Metroid very much, and so the thought of that but on a tiny black and white screen seemed horrible to me. About 5 minutes in and I could see that my suspicions were entirely false, this game is closer to a portable version of Super Metroid than it is to the NES Metroid! The instant I saw that there was a save feature, I knew I was wrong about this game. The small Game Boy screen was, at times, a little frustrating (dropping down a shaft only to land on an enemy that you couldn't see is VERY common), but aside from that the gameplay was basically just like Super Metroid but you can't aim diagonally or turn into Morph Ball in the air. Not having a map was barely an issue either, since it was always very clear that your only real aim is to kill the Metroids, and doing so would allow you to progress. The word was fairly simple, too, in comparison to Zebes. I suppose it had to be, given that it was on the Game Boy. Hunting down the Metroids is a breath of fresh air actually! It gave bombing random areas and searching for secrets an extra bit of meaning; what if there's a Metroid down there? Keeping on top of your health and missles at all times is a must, as well. Of course, if you run out of missles while fighting a Metroid you can always just run away, which I though was pretty neat actually. Sometimes the smartest thing for me to do was to retreat and restock. The Metroids themselves are kinda... eh, they're not very interesting until you get to the last ones. The third mutation of the Metroids were personally my least favourite, I hated how fast they would fly around. There's one or two of them in those rooms made out of breakable blocks, which to me was an absolute nightmare. I found the Omegas easier, in fact. At least they're placed in rooms where you can move about. The upgrades in this game awesome! Spider Ball is kinda boring, but Space Jump and Plasma Beam more than make up for it. Spider Ball also did help me find a lot of secrets, so I owe it that. I'm also quite a big fan of Spring Ball. I had no idea that Spazer originated in this game, either. So many things that I used to assume Super Metroid introduced actually came from this game, including little things like crouching and shooting downwards. I didn't realize it at first, but after returning to the Spazer Beam room to look for any potential secrets I may have missed I noticed that it had returned to its podium; you can only carry one beam upgrade at a time. I feel that was a strange choice, maybe done for balancing? Plasma Beam is by far the best beam though, I wouldn't recommend picking up anything else after you've found that one. Overall, I had a very positive experience with this game. I can't believe I spent so long not having played it! I sincerely do hope that Metroid: Samus Returns will give this game the love it deserves!
Very nice review. I believe this game is really underated. People tend to hate it and I really don't get why. I mean... it's not as good as, shall we say, Super Metroid or Zero Mission, but I even like it more than Fusion haha. And now I've played three times Samus Returns (it came out 4 days ago. Is THAT good) and I think is... just one step above Super Metroid to be the best in the franchise (side scroller category). If you like that much the side scroller Metroid games, you're gonna love Samus Returns :)
Having just revisited much of the Mega Man series, now I find this hidden gem. The underappreciated compositions of an era, working diligently on the company dime behind Nintendo screens. Amazing.
As a sound designer myself I know more technical reasons this is awesome. And awesome it is. How can I put it for ppl to understand: It is like being able to bang out photorealistic portraits on an Etch-a-Sketch every 6 hours.
It's better than the first, which makes me glad Nintendo release Zero Mission. I loved every second of Zero Mission (minus Mother brain). I enjoy Metroid II's relaxing play style though, I find my self re-completing the game just to kill bordom.
Was the Mother Brain battle too lackluster for you or something? I thought it could be pretty hard. I guess when compared to its final form in Metroid III (SM), it can seem underwhelming.
I could actually play and finish metroid 2. once i unlocked original metroid on my zero mission cartridge i tried it out and died in 5 mins and went nope im good
I am beyond thankful to have seen the evolution of games since the NES era. I'm sure that for teens who grew up with the 360/ps3 the advancements are noticeable but nowhere near the jump since the late 80s.
I truly envy you guys, I grew up more PS1/PS2 but the majority of games I play are from the PS1 and prior to that. I wish I could've experienced that evolution firsthand but oh well
Just think, centuries ago, we had nothing but stones, temples, and people killing animals using spears. 1991 roles along, and we have the technology to have someone play something with a moving screen and a song that's orchestrated into sound bites. This goes to show you that nothing is impossible if you put your mind into it.
There’s something about this song that’s different from the rest of the series. It manages to be upbeat and not intense at all like the boss themes as well as the Samus Returns remix, and a little relaxing without being mostly ambient noises like the item room theme from the original, crateria’s theme from super, and the title theme from this game. I don’t know what they did to make this masterpiece, but it’s my favorite gameboy song and one of my favorite songs in the series.
This music has been stuck in my head for 20 years, kinda Scary, because I Loved this game as kid when it was new, and played it over and over again, now playing the remake and I Love it too...
Jacob Hillier AM2R is not a remake. It's a rip off. The Jerkoff adding his own shit and puzzles to the game. It's no longer the same game. The only people who enjoy it are millennials of 20 or younger. I think it's possible you people just haven't ever played Metroid II from start to finish, so you have no idea
Holy shit first person to actually share my opinion. I even saw some guy saying that it actually replaces Metroid 2 in the serie ? nigga what. The only thing that changes in Metroid games are the map. The planet you explore. So by changing the map like the guy did in AM2R basically makes it a new game. Great Metroid game, but it's not Metroid 2 lol idk how it's so hard to understand
The Ultimate Hunter eats things that can copy and mimic all DNA (and RNA) they come in contact with and thus survive anything short of complete incineration of it's tissue. Both of those need to have their own extinction event.
Me and my friends are playing Alien Rpg by Free League Publishing. My Marine pilots dropship crashed and they somehow survived the explosion. We played this theme as she made her way on foot M41A pulse rifle in hand VP70 on her hip on an unknown planet.
Even with the amount of modern technology we have, I don't think any remixed version will beat this. There's just something so appealing about the crispy sounds of the original GB version. It's different with games like Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion where the samples are slightly modern enough to where remixing them can work. But Metroid 2's music is so old school that you can't really touch upon it without losing 50% of what makes it great IMHO.
Always loved this theme. This is the only Metroid game I've ever beaten (though I think I've only played the original and this one). It was so scary as a kid, but felt so satisfying that I beat this hard/scary game myself. This theme was always my favorite in it, too, since it just has this right mix of feelings. You don't feel "in danger" while this music is playing, but it does compel you to go forward. It's mysterious, but also zippy rather than fear inducing, which is an uncommon trait for "scary game" music. While the boss music would have my 10 year old self nearly having a heart attack, this music was calming and familiar and comforting, but also mysterious. And this is the song you always hear when you've cleared an area enough for the lava to move so you can travel to another area, giving this theme the "we're going to a new place!" feel. A masterpiece that I love to this day.
Lyrics: I am Samus No, not Metroid In fact I hunt Metroids down I Only do this for myself got to make some money somehow I love my job though hunting bounty blow stuff up with a power bomb then I find some upgrades for free spider ball lets me roll on walls I am female No not male, I guess you'll call me mother now, oh baby metroid, don't look back cause I've killed your whole family I didn't think that you'd be so cute not a blood sucker just quite yet I will take you somewhere safe At Ceres you'll be under no threat! No matter how many remixes are out there, this one is always the best to me. (For clarification, not to say that all the others are bad, it's just that this one truly stands out to me.)
I vaguely remember playing this game on my father's old gameboy console when I was around 2 or 5 years old, I remembered when that console was a brick :P this was probably the first game I ever picked up, and I would remember in the very beginning of the game when I heard this song I enjoyed it so much whenever I gave up I would just sit there and listen to the song for a few minutes while the game was running and started playing the game again. What I love so much about Nintendo that no other gaming console company really does is that they always provide the old games for their new consoles, so you can still play them just like how you remembered it, so I have this game on my 3DS :3
Right? I've always thought of this tracks as a weird shot for Metroid, but after listening to the amazing version of Samus Returns I come to this and feel really hyped!

A map.
I remember being so, soooo lost in this game. Oh and rolling on ceilings a lot, still being lost. haha.
Lol. It's true, this game is too much without a map. Although Nintendo power did come out with a map, I had no idea as a kid.
I don't even know how I made it to the final boss without a map! Or did I use a map...?
Actually I had no problem navigating through this game without a map.
Once you've figured out, how the world is structured, it is not that confusing anymore.
Only the simplistic graphics made it sometimes hard to distinguish different places from another.
I played through it with the Nintendo Power map about three times as a kid. I replayed it at age 27 without a map, and I was amazed that I didn't get lost; I was actually able to remember where everything was and finish it.
As soon as the game boy library went live on Switch, this was the first game I started!
Same playing through it now.
Me too I beat it already and want to start speedruns soon.
I just beat Samus Returns for the first time right now, and I loved it!
My thumb aches from the final boss fight...
@@Roggentrolla my index fingers hurt from diggernaut
@@Roggentrolla yeah I hated the diggernaut chase, nice username lol
Having just revisited much of the Mega Man series, now I find this hidden gem. The underappreciated compositions of an era, working diligently on the company dime behind Nintendo screens. Amazing.
Just watched a tutorial on how the NES was confined to four voices. The use of the noise channel at the forefront is genius.
@@archermidland what
@@sam_64 what it says on the tin
@@archermidlandIt was the Game Boy that had only four voices. The NES had five actually.
One of THE best game tracks from the series.
Have yet to play Metroid 2 or even the remake, but this song...I still feel nostalgia for this song.
And feeling Nostalgic for something you haven’t even experienced personally yet is something even Greater ..
As a sound designer myself I know more technical reasons this is awesome. And awesome it is. How can I put it for ppl to understand: It is like being able to bang out photorealistic portraits on an Etch-a-Sketch every 6 hours.
This game was far more better than the first one. Especially for the brand new save station systeme. :D
Metroid had a save system tho in the jp release and best version of Metroid 1
I could actually play and finish metroid 2. once i unlocked original metroid on my zero mission cartridge i tried it out and died in 5 mins and went nope im good
This theme is just pure awesomeness
I am beyond thankful to have seen the evolution of games since the NES era. I'm sure that for teens who grew up with the 360/ps3 the advancements are noticeable but nowhere near the jump since the late 80s.
I truly envy you guys, I grew up more PS1/PS2 but the majority of games I play are from the PS1 and prior to that. I wish I could've experienced that evolution firsthand but oh well
Close your eyes and remind yourself on the past... as we played as kids... the sun was burning and we played this game on our gameboys...
Just think, centuries ago, we had nothing but stones, temples, and people killing animals using spears. 1991 roles along, and we have the technology to have someone play something with a moving screen and a song that's orchestrated into sound bites. This goes to show you that nothing is impossible if you put your mind into it.
bruh this track SLAPS
0:09 one of those songs you whistle at work and on one knows what it is for years.
I had to come back to this after this game came out on the switch!!
Arguably one of the best themes on the system. GB music will always sound even more nostalgic than NES to me.
Hot take alert: I think this is better than the Brinstar theme
Not that hot of a take. I think I would agree to that
There’s something about this song that’s different from the rest of the series.
Can't wait to go back to SR388 in September ;)
Literally the only BEST soundtrack in the entire game.
Well, I mean... there can only be one best.
But I know what you mean XD This theme is great!!
I wouldn't mind a remake of this game. Let's hope there's a map...
I think what you two want is called a "remaster." A remake, on the other hand, can be expected to add or update things.
This is the track that first made me fall in love with 8bit/chiptune
What a great track to start comitting speciocide
The Ultimate Hunter eats things that can copy and mimic all DNA (and RNA) they come in contact with and thus survive anything short of complete incineration of it's tissue. Both of those need to have their own extinction event.
This song brings me back. Love it :)
This song just sings "Going on a fun space adventure". Surprisingly upbeat for a Metroid game
Me and my friends are playing Alien Rpg by Free League Publishing. My Marine pilots dropship crashed and they somehow survived the explosion. We played this theme as she made her way on foot M41A pulse rifle in hand VP70 on her hip on an unknown planet.
This is such a banger and it's been in my head for 33 years!
This is one of my favorites from the series... Right up there by... EVERY song from Super Metroid :]
Thanks for bringing back old memories
Great game...Great music...good times.
This track isn't brought up much when talking about Metroid soundtrack but I think it should be. It's the most fitting and perfect adventure theme.
I got a Metroid Samus Returns commercial before the video started. Me likes.
❤️🔥❤️🔥my favourite game as a kid, best song!
The most under appreciated Metroid theme. Possibly most under appreciated Nintendo theme.
This theme makes me want to absorb all organic energy around me
Love this theme, way to start u off calmly in the game because a lot of the themes just get creepy
Essa música do game é pura nostalgia, sucesso mesmo.
This theme is so rockin and adventurous. Samus is all on her own to explore and kick alien ass.
Hm this will always be my favorite version of the theme. It sounds more rock-y... than AM2R or SR
This is seriously the best track the Game Boy ever produced.
One of the best video game songs in history.
I’ll never forget my first!😎
I keep returning to this - the sound and echoes - very atmospheric - I'd love it redone without losing this original magic
Has a nice groove.
This composition is life changing. Just ask any kid who heard it through headphones in the 90's.
"Oh boy, this song is great! I can't wait to hear the rest of the soundtrack"
>:(

Now Finally Is the Official Return of Samus!!!!
No matter how many remixes are out there, this one is always the best to me. (For clarification, not to say that all the others are bad, it's just that this one truly stands out to me.)
How I loved those covers...Even now it is such fantastic pieces of art that make you dream if you like science-fiction
I cant wait to see this entire ost in a reimagination!
After years of waiting this is finally going to have a remake!! I can hardly wait!!
I think it's amazing that the Game Boy can make this amazing music
It uses the WAVE channel for the lead, which is an interesting, but ultimately rewarding choice imo
The remake version (Samus Returns) of this track makes the original game even better
Right? I've always thought of this tracks as a weird shot for Metroid, but after listening to the amazing version of Samus Returns I come to this and feel really hyped!
Alvaro Stöckle Actually i thought the same, Metroid II was different from the other Metroid games, Samus Returns shows that Nintendo can really do amazing remakes
I’ve never been a fan of Metroid, but I can’t deny music like this absolutely slaps, this game came out on 1991!
Long live the Game Boy
Its good to compare the new with the old and still see that the old still holds up. Long Live Samus!
First Metroid game I ever touched
Weird how I heard all renditions of this track and the Gameboy one sticks out on top for
me, theres just something so catchy about it and has me in a good mood to do some exploring
decided too buy this game for my 3ds xl must I say it took me back into time when I was a little kid and playing games like this one. Probably gonna still buy the remake edition for the Nintendo 3ds.
Arguably still the best version of this theme to date.
Got an ad for this game's remake and that's just incredible.
Metroid 5 is real everyone!
Been looking everywhere for this . Went to every other metroid soundtrack before I remembered samus returned to sr 388
Hell yeah! This is my jam lol
I feel like the 3ds remake doesn’t quite capture the jovial upbeatness of the original.
What worse thing is that Nintendo *HAD TO* rip of the concept of Metroid looks from AM2R...
And those bastards yet tried to cancel that fan-remake.
One of the most kickarse 8-bit tracks of all time.
This song is fantastic. Every time you left an area killing Metroids and trying to survive, this song is waiting for you. For a brief time you feel safe and the desire to push on grows.
And then you find that one Metroid (no, not the very first one)…
When a new Metroid game gets announced:
Astounding theme I remember since it came out. Prob in my top ten of all time
This theme is one of the things the original did better than the remake.
This is so good!!!
I am here after playing The Return of The Return of Samus :)
Forever the best 8 bit song of all time
