I wasn't reminded of anyone's intro+editing style. I WAS impressed that you explained things in a way easy to understand. And that you discussed this important topic. Question: When you crop only part of the animal, like the lioness, how do you decide how much of her to cut away? Thank you. Subscribed.
Hi Debra, thanks so much for the comment and question. Would you mind if I answer that in Sundays video? I’m doing a Q&A and this will make a great topic to discuss.
Hi Mark.... I think I have caught up on your tutorials. However need to watch them over and over again to not "miss out " on anything.....Thankyou so much.
Cropping is definitely linked to artistic composition. I think that's why many photographers struggle with it. Also conforming to preset aspect ratios is not always what's best for a particular composition. I think more often than not I end up using a custom aspect ratio for my crops and forgo any social media or off the shelf readymade frame size crops. But I think I am in the minority in that regard. Thanks.
Thanks a lot for the comment. I also tend to crop to however the frame fits around the image, regardless of aspect ratio. Cropping is definitely a huge artistic decision, as important as the initial composition idea. Thanks for watching 😊
@@MarkDumbleton I'm wondering what judges for a photo competition think of "cropping outside the box," so to speak. Once I gain confidence I'll do it, too.
Hi Ken, I would always do noise reduction from the original RAW file. If you crop in Lightroom, it’s not changing the actual file data, it’s merely applying a virtual change so it doesn’t matter when you run the noise reduction because you’re still dealing with RAW Data, but if you’re cropping in Photoshop on a Tiff or psd file, you would definitely need to have run DENOISE before. Hope that helps.
Amazing content Mark! Could you please tell me your Lightroom export settings for best quality? I’m noticing a big quality loss on my uploads to IG and in general comparing to the image in Lightroom just before. Thanks a lot !!
Hi Mark, When is the best time to crop before editing a picture or after? I tend to believe that crop at the end it gives the opportunity to use parts of the image in the editing process. Am I wrong? Can you please explain here or in one of your future videos what is the best approach? Thank you!
Thanks so much for the question. Can I ask that I answer this question in a new video this coming Sunday? It’s a detailed answer and I would love to give the question the time it deserves? 😊
Awesome as always Mark 😉 I always struggle with deciding on an aspect ratio when cropping, and when I export. Do I leave it at 3:2? Or change it to 4:3, or even 4:5? 3:2 works for FB, but not always for IG
Hi Jackie, apologies for the late reply. It is always tricky to choose an aspect ratio, but my advice is to always crop it correct for the photo. I completely ignore what platform I’m posting to and always decide on the crop based on what represents my vision and subject the best.
@@MarkDumbleton thanks, and the export settings for a website? I get sooo confused when trying to Google these things cause it seems everybody uses different sizing etc
@@jackieboshoff2013 Hi Jackie, do you mean export settings or aspect ratio? I dont worry about my aspect ratio for my website - whatever is best for the photo. In terms of export settings, I have a video coming soon about that :)
Thanks for the comment. I have taken Inspiration from the way Simon presents his videos, as far as editing style, I’ve been editing my photos this way for at least 10 years now.
Hi Mark, Great tips, always like your tutorials. I have 24m mp camera and like shooting small birds. Always worried if that is enough for small crops or would using something like gen expand 'Neo' or enhance 'lightroom' on the original help or hinder things? Thanks.
Thanks a lot for watching and for the comment. What lens focal length are you using? 24mp can be a bit limiting compared to a 45mp sensor for example, but I guess it also depends on the final use for the image? Big crops are fine for social media, but for printing it definitely limits the amount you can crop.
Excellent video and advice! Photographs are a standard to aim for!
That means a lot, thanks a lot and thanks for watching the video.

On high iso photos should I use a noise reduction software first before cropping?
