I know a few guys who have done both and to me it sounds like hotel maintenance is more cookie cutter and routine then apartment. I think apartments tend to be worse because hotels people know they are guests and can be charged for the destruction and such whereas apartments they live there and feel entitled to do whatever they want especially section 8 or HUD places. You never know what you will walk into.
I was shocked that nothing in the room was covered prior to spraying texture on the ceiling. Thirty two years ago I started in APT Maintenance it is tough work but as like you I learned immensely. Now, I am a lead tech for facilities maintenance at a hospital.
Thanks for all you do. I am on the commercial building operator side of the industry but you never know what can happen or where you may need to find work. I enjoy seeing what goes on with the hotel maintenance and residential side so if i end up there I have a good understanding of the day to day and PM work.

The constant on call , the wear and tear on my vehicle on me was not worth the poor pay and the long hours. I watch these videos as a reminder of how much better my life is now without all that in my life. One thing I learned about apartment maintenance is people DO NOT STRIVE TO BE THERE THEY END UP THERE Knowing that I knew it was not a good situation to plant roots
It is the team you work with that makes the job fun. Yup, you get to clean up after other people but I spent an hour or more outside picking trash or shoveling everyday. Your tenants can make your day just by the way they describe what is not working. I got clog of the week a lot, clog of the month a couple times, on call can make you or break you. I had 1500 units and back to back calls in three cities.
The popcorn ceiling work area was a freaken disaster. Y'all should use some drop clothes to protect the furniture and carpet. Why leave a mess for the cleaning ladies. They have a tough enough job. Come on bro. Professionalism.

Do you get apartments where they smashed the stove and door s and window and cupboards and leaves garage all over I see it often in a nice looking complex
Apartment Maintenance is great fir a former Contractor--it is easy for them and the pay is great because their skill level is super high. Everyone else I agree pay is poor…whatever State you are in. Unless you plan on being a Contractor in the future
I live in an old apartment complex. I've had several leaks coming down through the my ceiling from the apartment above, over the course of several years, as well as having experienced, gurgling and foaming toilet bowl incidences, and sudden instances of dripping faucets...out of the blue. Suffice to say, I have endured too many leaky situations over the years...to feel settled about. Consequently....from time to time, the unit above me would summon a plumber, and things would be okay for a while, then before I knew it....another leak. Most recently....I was using the kitchen garbage disposal and had the light above the sink on as well. I have never experienced anything wrong with the operation of the sink or disposal, sans brownish water and the tainting of my water faucet with white spots. All has been functional aside from those two factors. All of a sudden....the disposal stopped working and the light went out. After some research, I found that both of the outlets...on the wall of the disposal and light....were out cold, meaning, no juice at all. Even after I had toggled the GFCI buttons, and checked the breakers, which were found to be in the correct position. Nonetheless, for good measure, I toggled the breakers as well. This happened on Wednesday. Thursday, I woke up to find that 'miraculously' not only did the disposal work, but the light above the sink and the two wall outlets....were working perfectly, and I hadn't touched a thing. Today is Friday, and the only repercussion from Wednesday's incident is that the disposal is still dripping. I have a coffee can underneath to catch all. It seems to be dripping at a reasonable rate and not pouring. The day that my outlets, disposal, and lights stopped working....I could hear that the upstairs unit was undertaking some kind of plumbing fixes. Being home, and the units being old and poorly constructed...I can 'hear' lots...For instance...it often 'sounds' like the water from upstairs coming down my wall between the bathroom and the kitchen. It's very loud, and was even shocked the first time I noticed it, and took a video, just to capture the loudness of the water I could hear from the wall. With all that I have relayed........Do you think that it's possible....that the plumbing issues coming from the unit above all these years, as well as their 'attempts' to fix the plumbing....probably with non-professionals....are affecting my unit. Please respond if you can. So....my story...is not a fun story. I seem to get the brunt of leak after leak...with a not-very-responsive landlord ( the unit above) that lives out of state and has, in the past, tried to make light of the leaking issues. My feeling is that he is renting as section 8, has owned the unit for many years, and obviously....does not care too much about the leaks I have experienced....as well the huge inconvenience...time and time again. What are your thoughts...about the continuous plumbing problems, and....my recent incident with the garbage disposal.....et al?????? Thanks so much...if you have a clue!!!!
Ok well as far as the leak it seems to me you have a pin hole either in your pvc pipe or copper pipes could be inside the wall dripping down for a while. What you need to tell them is to check with an infrared thermometer camera.
As for the garbage disposal I would just get a new one just in case and make sure to call an electrician to see if the unit is connected the proper way
Been in apartment maintenance for decades. The biggest thing you learn from it are 2 things. First thing is that tenants live like ANIMALS in a zoo. Second thing is that 90% of service technicians do not know their a$$es from a hole in the ground. As a service technician that has pride in his work, you'll find that you're spending more time cleaning up after preexisting issues caused by previous service technician that don't know what their doing.
9 Years In (320 apartments and 60 Houses by myself and On Call) coming from 10 Years of Healthcare. For me Apartments are Way Easier than having your phone on Speed Dial for any 3am Overbed LIght that went out or Broken Bed from getting hung on a Chair Rail. Never a dull moment espessially when you don't have subs.

I've been placing bids and doing contracted jobs on the side and a few property managers call me up time to time to assit on things if i have time .. Interested watching content like this, I know several maintenance techs and support the trade. Maintenance maintains the property and its value if the owner invest in what you need when you need it . The red texture gun at HD is really good just have to drag a compressor with you make sure it’s decent size those small ones won’t cut it.

I do maintenance in apartments and yeah it does suck sometimes a lot of bs you deal with for not a lot of pay
