Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Wonderful history teacher. We need to see Bruce on national television.

My boots sprung a leak yesterday and that itchy bit on my leg has come back. Things haven't been great this week...but maybe Mary's was worse. Great vid Bruce. Thanks for posting.
Aye, everything's relative
I lost my balance and ended up with a twisted sock.Aye things are bad .Really bad .The Tories are still conniving. Nothing much has changed.
I hope you never run out of stories to tell us Bruce🙏💝🤣
Aye, the stories will outlast me
You are the best. You keep it interesting, light hearted with a little “ fun humor” in there. You always have my attention. Thank you so much for your love and enthusiasm for history . 👍🏴❤️
Wow, thank you!
I’ve always felt sympathy for Mary Queen of Scots and learning this horrific part of her history saddens me. I can believe that she believed execution would be a release for her. I hope that she has found peace. Thank you for your excellent presentation.
You're welcome
"Syphilitic drunk complicit in the murder of her secretary..." "Level of consent..." I'm starting to wonder if maybe Mary's judgment in partners wasn't part of the problem.
It was very much part of the problem 😉
She also didn’t have that much choice
I wouldn't call being abducted by an armed gang, locked in a castle, raped and then pressured by your nobility to marry your rapist her choosing a "partner", really.
@@LynxChan She was not pressured by her nobility to marry Bothwell. They hated him, and when she married him many revolted. She would have remained as queen if she had him executed instead of marrying him.
In fact many historians think she wasn’t abducted and raped, but it was staged to give her an excuse to marry him. One of the reasons people think that is because it was thought at the time he was behind the plot to murder her second husband. Instead of arresting him, and trying him properly, she gave him a show trial.
Much is made of Bothwell turning up to the trial with 2,000 men, but all of her major nobles had similar numbers of retainers. She could have ensured all of the other nobles had their armed followers present when Bothwell went on trial, and that he was tried properly. She didn’t and maybe that was because she wanted him to get off.
The relationship between Bothwell and Mary was pretty murky, and one of the theories is they were already having an affair. We do know she miscarried his twins a few months later, but there is no reliable record of how far along in her pregnancy she was. If she was already pregnant when she was abducted it would explain why she had to marry him. However she could have become pregnant at the time of the abduction. However as they were married 3 weeks after the abduction she could not have known she was pregnant when she was married.
@@danielmontaigne1219 Her aim through it all was to hold the English Throne for her son, which she accomplished. She also trusted that people would be honest and do what they said they would do--with particular regard to Elizabeth I--who exploited Mary's trust as a means of strategy. What strikes me most about that period is the contrast between what people claimed to believe vis a vis their religion and how they behaved in reality. God was just another abstraction, albeit an important one to toss into the mix when someone was losing an argument. (Henry VIII, say, or his darling excommunicated daughter.) Elizabeth scored in the short term because she was more than willing to play dirty. But in the long term, it cost her dearly.
Keep up with the excellent videos Bruce 👌👌
Thanks 👍
Incredible story Bruce! My Saturday wouldn't be the same if I wasn't regaled with a wonderful Scottish tale. Thanks for the story. Good morning from America.
My pleasure!
Bravo, Bruce! You knit the tale together marvelously as usual!
Mary Queen of Scots is my 10th Great Grand-Aunt 😉 I had my AncestryDNA done last year and was AMAZED that I had Royal connections not too far in my genealogy. My line comes from her brother, James Stewart Earl of Moray. My DREAM is to visit Scotland, England and Ireland where my ancestors came from & leaning the history….which you make learning the history so much fun 🤩
I'm related too! As soon as covid simmers down going to Scotland!
That's amazing
@@lpc61 Well, hello cousin lol
The Earl of Moray, was Margret Erskine & King James 5th's, son. They had two children together. James 5th, loved Margret Erskine and wanted to marry her. But the Auld Alliance with France came first. There are poems and sonnet's written about their love story. She was the daughter of the Earl of Mar. So, you see, that was James Stewart's only living Grandfather. When Mary, returned to Scotland, the Earl of Mar had to keep both sides from being as odds with one another.
Lol
"Mary Queen of Scots is one of the most tragic figures in Scottish History..." Blimey, she's got some serious competition for that particular title.
I like how higgledy-piggledy the houses are on Conon's Gate.
9:02 I don't think that there can be any "consent" when held captive in a castle, surrounded by your attacker's men.
If it's Saturday, it's another brilliant post from Bruce. Thank You Sir! 🧐
😘
Best history lesson I’ve ever had from a superb teacher. G’aun yersel, Bruce. Magic, man.
Oh, you're too kind
Wow! that poor woman, some men can be wretched. Queen of all the Scots but apparently the power there in was a lie. Another great post Bruce. Real truthful History can be harsh.
True
I would have thought the week leading up to her execution would have been her worse. However proven wrong here.
She said she looked forward to her execution in the end. Not sure if that was bravado, but after all those years in prison it could well be true
Love Futurelearn. Will add to my list
Nice job! One of my favorite characters from history.

I grew up in Glasgow In castlemilk and I always remember my school teacher telling us that she used stay there from time to time , I can’t mind the name of the castle that’s there but I have many memories when I was wee boy playing in the old building running around on the old rotten floors which was dodgy as you could tell the were ready to collapse but you didn’t a F, then the spiral staircase leading upto the turret which I always remember vividly being warm even in winter it was strange. Anyway great video as per 👍🏼
I love how you tell history.
Thanks Donna
I visited her place of execution at Fotheringhay, very sombre, The Stewart Society leave a wreath on the anniversary of her execution, her son James had the castle razed.RIP Marie.
Tapadh leibh. Very interesting. I didn't know this. I see Mary completely differently now.
Mary, Queen of Scots was so moral, but her treasonous privy council and John knox were responsible for all her problems, they didn't let her rule properly since her return to Scotland, creating problems one after the other for her.
May God grant her peace in heaven.
Long Live the Queen.
Well, don't forget about Elizabeth. She & John Knox were keen on subverting Catholicism. Her 1/2 brother convinced her to return to Scotland. I think for his own foolish reasons. The best thing for Mary to have done, was to stay in France. She was from a very wealthy family & Mary De Quisse had just died, leaving her a sizable estate.
😆Bruce, I am lovin your braw accent as much as your video content. Hello from deep, arctic, hick-land Iowa. My Scots Irish genes/ancestry are humming like a piper just listening to your stories. Thanks for brightening up my third winter of isolation. Very fun and even my cu (cur hound) will listen with me.
10:34 ,till the next time we meet Bruce
How you see the week in question inevitably hinges on whether Mary was part of the plot to murder Darnley. If she WAS, then the whole scenario is turned on its head- she got rid of a millstone around her neck, avenged the murder of her friend and married her lover, with the 'abduction' a piece of theatrics intended to smooth over all the impropriety. It's obviously a really controversial topic, but that's how a lot of people at the time saw it.
Obviously. I've just gone with what seems to be the prevailing historian's view today
Mary had married Darnley, b/c he was Catholic. This made a lot of Nobel's mad. She thought, she would get the support of the Vatican. The Vatican didn't want anything to do with those Scot's. They'd tried to defeat them before and lost. Darnley, was more than likely homosexual. Thus the syphilis. There is a painting, showing him lying nude by his lover, after they'd been blown-up. Like to know who commissioned that painting? Sort of set the story in stone, so to speak. Along with the Casket Letters, that suddenly appeared & then disappeared, incriminating Mary & Bothwell for Darnley's murder. I don't think the Earl of Mar, knew exactly who to believe or who to trust, when it came to baby James. His sworn duty, is to try & get James 6th to the thrown. Which he did....James 1st of England.
The Earl of Mar was sworn to Mary Queen of Scot's safety. He had taken her to France when she was around 8 years old. But was appalled at her level of education & how she conducted herself, when she returned. When she came for James, he was afraid that the baby would be killed by her adversaries. And the other question is, was baby James, really her child??? She should have stayed at Stirling. Stirling was a fortress.
Why is it that so many people seem unable to pronounce HOLYROOD properly? Thanks for another super video.
What do you mean? Bruce pronounces it the way anyone who grew up in Scotland does.

thanks for another great story, Bruce. I developed an immediate dislike for Bothwell.. no one should be able to do what he did to Mary and get away with it smelling like a rose. being drawn and quartered would be too mild of a punishment. grrr

I just watched the Mary Queen of Scots the movie that's on the BBC i player,it was good but I couldn't tell you if it was historically accurate... 😊 ✌️

Mary visited Bothwell in Hermitage Castle in vile weather after he had been wounded in a fight with the locals. Do you think she may have been thinking better of him?
As I say he had given 'loyal' service
@@ScotlandHistoryTours That says it all!
A'reyt Bruce. Interesting and entertaining as ever.
Then or now, Mary would need a TARDIS for the police in 2021, which seems to also be in reports of worst week ever, so might be available? Not the same since they lost the Scottish doctor, even if they moved to Hogmanay?
Well she's obviously gotten over it, I mean you never hear her complain about it these days.
I found out not long ago my family the boyds once helped out Mary Queen of Scotts Robert the bruce and Wallace
Crikey, now that is a shitty week indeed. Women have never had a great deal from the male world, and I wonder if her being Queen made it worse not better.
To be fair I wouldn't have wanted to be a female nobody either😳
If Darnley was syphilitic, did Mary catch the disease?
Hi Bruce! Great to see my home cities in the background. Wee question, what do you think of John Guy's suggestion that Mary was not raped as such, as she would never have married such a man. She had more pride? I have not read his book. Thanks!
The child at 6:30 is the son of Henry VIII the future Edward VI who was suggested as a husband for Mary before she was taken to France. Not James VI.
I know 😜
Are you gonna do a show about James s birth at Edinburgh castle
Hmmmm, it's not in the current plan, but not out of the question either
"...second syphilitic husband..."; are you insinuating her first husband was also syphilitic? I also think having your head lopped off was worse though🙂 You have to admire Boswell though, because he played a blinder, but at least he got what he deserved in the end. Poor Mary, damned whatever she did.
Francis wasn’t syphilitic. Add a comma in, “second, syphilitic husband”. I think that’s what they meant. Francis was sickly but not syphilitic
Pardon my confusion or ignorance, who's the French Las in brave heart, shags Wallace, French Las. Was she real?🤪☘.
