I just buy stainless steel heim joint ends from Tacoma Screw and use the stock rod. It's under $20 and you get that exact same result. I've done this on all my Harleys over the years.
The one on my Dyna “failed” at the worst time - bumper to bumper traffic in Dallas. I just replaced one today on my Heritage before the inevitable happens. Impeccable timing Ryan 😎👍
Timely video as the linkage on my '04 Road King just failed while on the road. I was lucky to have some zip ties in the saddlebag and was able to hold it together to get the bike home.
Thanks Ryan. I had to remove my shift linkage to install a Cirro chrome accent piece. Was not fun to find out someone prior to my ownership liked to use lots of red lock tite!
Just bought my first Harley from my son. A 2013 Ultra Classic and I love it. Did a 3 point oil change by watching your videos and will change linkage. Thanks for the thread to get the one you recommend. Don't care for the current one. Want to upgrade that and the converter.
ya...and don't forget the shift lever on the transmission side where it connects to the transmission shift shaft. First year as a Harley owner with no experience, had to have that fixed because the splines were blown away on that end....cost me BIG.
Happened to me in Portland. 95 degree rush hour stop and go traffic. I was heading back home to San Diego from Canada. 😂 Fixed it on the road with some tape and made it home to SD Broke on my previous bike an ‘03 Fatboy.
Mine will never let me down because I changed it out for the cool huge chromed aluminum one with the huge SS ball and sockets right after watching this video :)
That’s awesome! Another video on Harley’s about “not a question on if, just when it’s going to fail” after spending 10’s of thousands of $ on these bikes
I changed out my stock one on my 08 RK with a Willie G shift linkage which came with those acorn nuts. Good to see I was right when I installed the front bolt back to front. Thanks!
Just bought a new Low Rider S. Love this bike and I'm looking forward to replacing everything that fails out in the middle of nowhere. Geez. For the hi price, I'd expect more. My '79 Superglide 80 will probably give me less headaches.
Yup.. first thing I changed out on when I purchased my 17 RG. Also, is it normal to have a tiny bit of wiggle at the shaft where the shift arm bolts to. Seems tight.
@Ryan Urlacher Funny thing, even with everything installed and the collar secure, you can still spin the rod easily with your fingers. What prevents that from walking back and forth??
Hey Ryan, I tried to research firment before posting, 2021 Road glide limited. Will it fit my bike? It says 1980 to current, not sure if the 2021 models are included. Thanks and love your work, thanks for your service. Be safe out there.
I bought an old sportster and it shifts fine but I went to make a slight adjustment to my linkage and it looks like it’s slightly bent/cross threaded on the adjuster.
Can you do a video as to where the public or a Patriot Guard Riders 501 C3 nonprofit may obtain retired Police Harley Davidson? We have a fleet of BMW's but wanted to know where to get the Harley version.
@@kurtfoulke5130 Because the heel swifter your kicking down half of the time putting a lot more stress on the linkage, the Toe shift isn’t as stressful on the linkage.
Mine broke on the side of the freeway. I was able to find a small piece of wire in the ditch and used some black tape... worked good until I the new one arrived
There is a nationwide shortage due to supply chain issues. We have a bunch on backorder from the distibutor. Hopefully they will be back in stock soon.
My 2015 Road Glide Special is approaching 30k miles. I torque the shifter linkage every year. There is absolutely no signs of wear FYI. The linkage is not remotely prone to failure. The splines are suspect especially for riders who can’t differentiate between kick and press. Shifting my bike is buttery smooth. Why would a rider buy from your site? Maybe I’m just lucky?
It came off 3 times and replaced once on the way to Sturgis. Nice to see you in Sturgis when we stopped to say hi to Tall. We didn’t want to bother you. Good video
My linkage just failed on the highway today, luckily less than a mile from home. I was able to limp into my garage in 5th gear. Then I find this video, except the store website give a "404" error. Not good!
Incredible how the motor company manages to make inferior parts on our high priced bikes. No other brand needs so many upgrades on their top dollar bikes. Consumers are getting more critical so wake up and shape up.
Looks like everyone must be taking your advice. Nobody has the Kuryakyn shift linkage in stock Feb15. Kuryakyn says shipping date delayed until May 6, 2023.
This is why I drive a Goldwing. 100,000 miles and all I've had to do is put 1 set of plugs in it and change the oil regularly. I like to ride, not work on them.
I've never heard of these linkages breaking. Most H-D riders feel the need to upgrade because it's so ugly, but it's a myth that they break and strand you. I've ridden on my stock linkage for 66K miles so far and haven't even needed to adjust it. I suspect some people don't bother to check it ever, or they stomp the hell out of their shifter.
Here's a tip you should share. I purchased an Electra Glide first thing I did was Drill two small holes through the shifter levers and shaft on both sides heel and toe shifter. Put a small screw or cotter pin and that's it. No problems. Thank you very much
Well this is upsetting. I have a 2015 street glide special at around 20,000 miles. We plan on leaving Indiana tomorrow to play around in Tennessee for the weekend. Expecting to put 1200 miles on the bike. I will be pissed if I get stranded. Its a cheap fix, but no way to get done before i roll out.
Hey Scott, Quick question. Did you have a small bell placed somewhere on your bike when this happened? I am hoping this difference helps me get through the weekend!
I think HD doesn’t improve the shift linkage because they know its shit, looks like shit so they have a nicer better one as a custom product available.
GM and Harley very similar business model. 1960’s GM stated AMERICANs but everything we make, let the public find the bugs. 2008 GM goes bankrupt trying to catch up to global competition. Harley is a premium company. We should not need to replace shifting linkages for improved products.

Hmm.. I have 82,000 miles on my 2012 FLHX and zero issues with the shifter linkage. I'll definitely take a closer look at this now though!
Good advice for the newbies. Usually have it replaced after the 2nd tank of fuel.
Thanks Ryan. I had to remove my shift linkage to install a Cirro chrome accent piece. Was not fun to find out someone prior to my ownership liked to use lots of red lock tite!

My 2014 FLHTK is still going strong. I changed my Linkage 18 months ago best thing I ever did
Glad to still see the 14 still Kickin. I bought my around the same time you got yours.

great video very quick and easy i changed mine out with a new one in 15 mins very easy no fuss thanks for the video

Isn’t the new kuryakin pressed in design now just similar to the stock linkage. Just waiting to fail?
Great vid. Your how to took any guesswork out of it.
Even to what wrench size
Went with another Amazon one but same procedure applies

Harley sells them now too with the heim joints. $104 if u don’t want the fancy ones.
Mine failed this morning near home. 2007 street bob 96in. Is this a standard length for all Harleys? Or do i need to do a little research?
Mine didn't brake just came off when I was out riding after watching this ima go ahead and upgrade it

Do you have one to fit my'95 Dyna? It has forward controls!
I went to order two for both bikes and you are sold out, when will there be more and can I do a back order ?
Dumb question here . Should the shifter be in 1st gear or Neutral when swapping this out? Maybe I didn’t hear that?
Can you do a video as to where the public or a Patriot Guard Riders 501 C3 nonprofit may obtain retired Police Harley Davidson? We have a fleet of BMW's but wanted to know where to get the Harley version.

I just signed up for your newsletter. I case I missed it, are you doing any Labor Day checkout discount codes for the LAB store?

25005 Dyna Wide Glide. 44,000 miles out of the original linkage. She's at 67,000 now. Might be scrounging one up real soon.
Pressed in will fail brother.
The hyperlink to the linkage arm did not work. I was to purchase it.
Do the decorative shifter linkage work good? I was thinking of putting one on my new Heritage but if not I will get the one you sell
Depends who makes it and the overall quality. We've seen a lot of junk
Ok thank you very much & thanks for the great videos always very informational
