    I'm SO TIRED of people labeling rodents as "beginner" pets! I have 2 cats & 2 guinea pigs, & the guinea pigs require a lot more upkeep than the cats. Rodents aren't easy to care for, they require a lot of work, space, & patience.

      Yes, indeed. I have a chinchilla, and she requires alot of attention. I try to spend time with her as much as i can because i know that rodents are very good at hiding there illnesses and can become fatally ill and you wouldn’t even know. Thats why I researched for about ten months before getting a chinnie.

      Likely a dog or cat vet honestly or just an outdate exotic vet. I don't like to go to vets for husbandry advice most of the time they just don't know updated care, they're great for medical, illness advice and treatments though.

    • @CelesticCF
      @CelesticCF 4 года назад +22

      @@VictoriaRaechel This is so true. With a lot of vets, once they get their certification, they stop educating themselves. Some also think that the longer they've been a vet, the smarter they are, but that means nothing if you haven't learned anything from your experiences. "I'Ve BeEn aN ExOtIc vEt FoR 30 YeArS, i'M nOt WrOnG." - an exotic vet that tried to give penicillin to my hamster. I think a lot of vets get burned out because it takes so long and so much effort to become one. Of course, that doesn't excuse malpractice.

      @hamuandxerxl4255 4 года назад +17

      I happen to be a vet, and I used to have a rescue station for hundreds of hamsters. From my experience very few vets know anything at all about hamsters - it is not part of our education, the university certainly doesn't teach about proper care or the right cage size. A vet only knows such things if he's personally interested in the topic and educates himself, like I did. Even the medication or anesthesia of hamsters is special and needs to be learned properly (but again, not in college) - I've met many colleagues who are afraid to perform surgeries on hamsters because they believe it goes wrong often. Which is not true if you know what to do. It takes some courage at first though.

      @@hamuandxerxl4255 Yes when I first went to my exotics vet I asked how often animals die during sedation and she said she has only lost two (parrots) and they had underlying problems. Where as regular vets act like chance of death is 99%. lol I also had one recommend SAD lamps instead of UVB for parrots. lol That why is so important to shop around when comes to specialist vets.

    I hate to admit that we impulse-bought a hamster for my daughter from Petsmart and walked out of there with the tiny cage they recommended, complete with 5" wheel for a Syrian, a hamster ball, and so many other things that make me cringe. We thought the store would know enough to provide us with the right stuff. That night we actually did research (like we should have done from the start) and learned SO much... mostly from your channel. So thank you for the education you provide. Within 2 days our hamster had a cage 8 times bigger, a proper sized wheel, toys and a sand bath, the hamster ball was disposed of, and I'm SO happy we have you to thank for that! I wish we'd done our research from the start, like many families we just assumed the pet stores were providing everything we'd need. Not even close.

    Even though petsmart’s products aren’t suitable for hamsters...I had an extremely knowledgeable and helpful employee. She told us all about making sure to buy paper based bedding to keep our hamster safe, and she recommended 2 seed and pellets mixes to mix together. Then she started talking about cages (even though we have one above the bare minimum) she told us to steer clear of most plastic hamster cages at pet stores. She told us our best option here were 40 gallon aquariums. I was really impressed by her hamster and small animal knowledge. I know that there are Pet store employees who know nothing about hamsters but some definitely have the knowledge to work there.

      The German Rodipet website is amazing, they specialise in rodent. Everything they sell is based on research for the needs of specific rodents. They even sent out an expedition to Northern Syria to study hamsters in the wild and they created terracotta tunnels and hideaways based on actual hamster burrows.
      I got loads of cool natural stuff from them like wood, moss, Cork etc and they even sell specific types of soil for Syrian hamsters, robos etc that matches the colour and ingredients of the soil in those hamster's natural environments.
      I had stuff delivered to me in the UK and customs fees and delivery fees were fairly expensive but it's worth getting a bunch of stuff from them at once. They don't have a huge list of products but most of them are unique and specifically made for rodents so I love it.

    Back in February my 8 year old son became interested in hamsters and expressed interest in getting one. So, as an animal lover, even though I’ve had two hamsters when I was a kid (not at the same time) I decided to do some research into owning one. That led me to your RUclips page and I must say I’ve learned so much! I actually feel so bad for the hamsters I had when I was younger. You’ve taught me so much and in turn taught my son a lot about proper hamster care and now our hamster Buddy is living his best life! Thank you for what you do! I’m happy there are people like you educating people on proper hamster care ❤️

      I'm opening a small/exotic animal shelter in the near future, and this is the pitch I intend to give to my local pet stores.
      Pets are expensive, you make more money selling more toys and bedding to fill a larger cage, then you have more consistent customers because people's pets aren't escaping or dying or getting sick very often, leading to them being like "yeah, let's go to this pet store since I got a hamster from that other place and it died, but this one sells all the proper things so they're better taken care of". We used to have a pet store in my old city that was literally known as the place you go to get a pet that will die in a week. I'm thinking that pitch will work, since it's literally just a win-win-win for everybody, the company, the pet owner, me, and the animals.

    • @_Somsnosa_
      @_Somsnosa_ 3 года назад

      They won't because they wouldn't sell as many hamsters and accessories if they told people how much money and effort it takes to properly look after one. They'd rather sell a thousand tiny cages than 10 large enclosures.
      Hopefully people will start to respect small pets just and much as they care about big pets like cats and dogs and animal are laws are expanded and enforced like they are with dogs and cats.

    You posted this video the EXACT day I picked up one of these guides from pet smart!! I was so shocked that the official care guide actually looked like this. My mom and I were thinking that it should be called “getting to neglect your syrian or dwarf hamster” instead of “getting to know your syrian or dwarf hamster”. By the way, thanks to your channel I just finished setting up my 40 gallon habitat! I’m going to pick up my baby campbell hamster from an ethical breeder on Wednesday :) your channel is the reason she’s gonna have a good life! You’re really making a difference for these animals and it’s amazing how many people have learned from you. I used to like Petsmart. WAIT before you get mad let me finish! The pet store that is near me has really great dog and cat stuff. However anything ells is bad, including rabbit, hamster and fish tanks/ cages and information. They sold me a betta fish a while ago and gave me a 3 gallon tank. It had a filter and heater. Everything was going great for a month. Until one day I wanted to give him a friend. I asked the pet shop worker if I could get 2 neon tetras . I told them my tank size and the breed of my fish. They said I could easily fit 3 neon tetras in my tank with no problems. 1 day later my betta ate on neon tetra and died the same day. The next day the other neon tetra died. We went to the store that same day because I was in tears and so much confusion. There was another pet store worker ( difrent lady) and she asked what had happened, i told her the story and she said that a betta and a tetra was fine but it needs to be at least a 10 gallon tank for 1 neon tetra! However they should at least be in groups of 5 not 2! I thanked her and left the store. I was so mad and confused how you could mess up a 3 gallon tank with a 10 gallon tank! I was so angry at the pet store. We wrote a note to the pet store manager and explained the situation. All they said back was: I'm sorry for your problems with petsmart. We will not give you any refunds. That was all they said! I was so mad! Mabye a refund would be nice but they didnt even do anything! All they did was write a half ass apology. They probably didnt even mean it! I will never shop at petsmart again for dog food or any pet needs! Tell me if you have had any problems with petsmart if you want? I'm hoping if we complain enough they will treat there animals right. Also hopefully there information to. If we all work together we can change the life of so many animals and hopefully stop this cruel behavior Petsmart does to there animals!

      Oh my god!! Actually, I remember a similar experience. So, my mom’s friend has a pair of birds. They were gotten from the pet store, and were put in the smallest cage possible. My mom asked what sex they were. She told my mom that there was boy and a girl. When my mom asked why, wouldn’t they create babies. She told my mom that she and her children wanted the babies. My brother had been asking for a baby bird for so long. So my mom decided that we get some. We went to the pet store (this was before I learned it was terrible) and got birds. The women there was literally choking and squeezing the bird to death when she was getting them out of the display boxes. The pet store didn’t even have everything that we needed for the bird. My parents even told me to keep my mouth shut, and listen to what the person there was telling us. I had done a bit of research on birds, but they thought the pet smart worker was right. When we got the birds, we put them in the biggest pet store cage we could find. Then one of the birds hurt his leg, and couldn’t fly. We returned them and got another pair of birds. Those were kept in the same cage that my mom’s friend put their birds in. I felt so bad for the birds back then, and still do because the cage was so small, and you could tell that they couldn’t even fly. We returned the birds, because my parents decided they didn’t want them anymore.
      Another experience I have buying from a pet store has to do with fish, like yours. I wanted a pet dog really badly. I was about 4-6 years old. My parents said that I can’t get a dog, but they would get me a fish. I went to the petstore with them and I looked at all the pretty fishies. We got a betta fish, and it was in the tiniest tank I have ever seen. I actually watched a video recently and it said that the fishes at PetSmart were ay to young to be sold. So we got the fish, a filter, and some weird small brown balls for food. We took it home and it died because my younger brother, who was pretty young then knocked it over on my birthday. The petstore worker told us some bad information, and gave us the tiniest cage possible.
      I hope that adults, and children understand how hard it is to care for an animal, and that pet stores are terrible. The staff are adults, they should have the common sense that breeding animals, and keeping them in tiny cages is bad.

      I've had something like that happen too! I was like 8, and my sister and I wanted goldfish. We went to Petco (we didn't know how horrible they were at taking care of animals) and looked at goldfish. We asked what they would need, and the workers said they would need a bowl, some food, some pebbles for the bottom, and some plants or something to hide in. We got all those, and then we chose our fish. We picked three, took them home, then when we got up the next morning two were dead. We went back to the pet store, and got two more, but they died too. What the pet store employees didn't tell us was that the fish we were getting were meant to be fed to other fish. As I was 8, I didn't think much about each of them being dead, so we went again and got a betta fish. We got what the employees told us to get, and went home. He lived for like a year because I went on vacation and I only left him a pellet that the Petco employee said would last 20 days. When we came back he was dead. RIP Tealy☹️ I hope that we can change all the bad care instructions!

You help me going every day, hour, minute, second and you have changed me and my pets lives. Ty Ilysm.

    I live in Germany and im really glad they actually care about the wellbeing of hamsters over here. Bedding sold over here is marked as dust and fume free, the employee i talked to helped me with a lot of details (could have been more but still), even gave advice on how to tame my hamster and actually adviced me to get a sand bath.
    Absolutely on a different level than in the US as it seems.

    *Long read but worth it lol* Just wanted to say thank you so much for educating people on Hamsters. I will admit that I bought a Syrian hamster on an impulse because I thought he was cute and bought a super small cage, no toys or chew sticks and had got the disposable bedding trays by kaytee. But when I got home, I realized I knew absolutely nothing about hamsters so I came on YT and found your page. Within 3 days of watching your videos, I learned so much! Went out and bought a huge container bin and made a DIY cage with the mesh put onto the top, added lots of toys and chewing sticks, soooo much bedding for him to burrow, a plastic castle and a small cardboard hideaway. I feed him lots of veggies and yogurt treats or fruit occasionally. Without you, Butters would be unhappy. Thank you for educating me!
