- This video was SUPER hard to post, but I felt it's really important to share my point of view with the current beauty community situation. I hope you understand my reasoning for talking about this- it's not to partake in any drama or to bash any one person. I want to give a well rounded point of view as a brand owner but also as a longtime influencer who has first hand seen the beauty community evolving over the last 10 years.
I'll be planning on the coming months doing shout outs and videos with new artists that would love the attention and support. Let me know what else I can personally do to improve the beauty community and get it back to makeup!!

Unfortunately things have gotten worse almost a year later.
Take me back to 2008, before beauty channels considered themselves gurus, hauls were products purchased from actual stores not sponsors/PR and the must have palette was from BH cosmetics.

This video pissed a lot of people off, but like it's only 8 minutes long. So I came here from Dear Influence to see why people got so pissy.
She hit the nail on the head in "dear influencers" when she said a hit dog will holier cause she said nothing to anyone directly but he came out swinging lol.
This video pissed just the influencers of, the have that range of subs and confirmed charge around 60k for a video, and who felt offended... JC and this influencers she ment!;)

these influencers that think they deserve more money than doctors and lawyers for promoting MAKEUP need to take several seats.

I laughed so hard too when I realised how much the beauty blogger (in my country) get for promote product photo on their Facebook, it’s higher than country average salary !!

It's so crazy to me how much beauty influencers make. I'm a lawyer and went to a reputable law school. Most of my friends and myself included made $50-80k their first year as an attorney in Chicago!! And we work our butts off! A "normal" work week for us is 60-70hours! Even friends who work at "big reputable law firms" made about $100-120k a year as a first year associate, and they work 80-100hrs a week! So whenever I hear influencers say "I'm so stressed! I work really hard and we travel so much!" I just roll my eyes, because who doesn't??! But nobody is paying us to fly to the Maldives and party for free 🤷🏻♀️

I miss the days where RUclips was like hanging out with your girlfriend and getting ready. These days I feel like it’s nothing but product promotions, crazy trips, hauls, and PR unboxing. I can’t relate. It sucks because I watch the transition with so many of my old favorites and it’s not about passion, it’s about marketing and consumerism. I feel like the majority of videos are like watching QVC at this point. It’s losing its fun. And when I do find good ones, I almost wish they would stay small Bc I don’t want them to lose it. I know that sounds horrible 🙁

Right. Meanwhile, I'm watching this video and genuinely hoping no one mentions my favorite small channels because I don't want them tainted by any brand sponsorships. It's sad and selfish to not want them to be noticed, but these sponsorships always seem to remove the integrity of our favorite vloggers.
So true... it's sad. No one feels truly trustworthy anymore. The sense of connection is totally lost in my eyes.

Y’all are literally complaining about one eyeshadow pan being $6?? Now I’m wondering why y’all are not out there attacking every brand at Sephora?? Stick to Walmart and stop complaining.

From someone who works behind the counter and have a true love of the industry it's a huge slap in the face to see the company I work so hard for send these influencers on trips and pay them more than the people preselling, and working the crazy hours ,in heels mind you, it's so hard to stomach!! Some of these influencers will even mispronounce their favriot products! I'm so glad your an owner who sees thru it. And that's why you have succeeded..... beauty gurus are a trend! You are a legend!

@@malloryedwards846 the beauty community has just turned so toxic, we got people like James Charles running around, acting like they started the beauty community, when in fact it was people like Michelle Phan and Marlena Stell and many genuinely nice and makeup passionate people who have been in the game longer who aren't money hungry, they're the OGs. But these newer Influencers will sell out and disrespect each other and come for the OGs for no reason. Honestly can't blame her for stepping back. Maybe once the beauty community crashes and burns (which is likely to happen with the course it's currently on) then will she come back and start afresh. Marlena said so many times that she tried to steer the ship away from the rocks and the path it was veering on, but even she has had to stop. Some ships are heavily anchored for a dangerous course and unfortunately the beauty community with the current "in trend Influencers" are the problem.

It's been widely talked about that Nikkitutorials charges 60,000 for a video. Part of the problem is her but part of the problem is the stupid companies that actually pay that and give the influencer an ego

Marlena, I have been with you from the start and hate to see these kinds of vids. You dont need to explain anymore than what you have been through. Please put your focus on finishing your awesome products and come out with something new, even if its repackaging/creating an eye palette with the shades your collection already has since it's always sold out. I hope to see your products in store again and maybe a palette with 4-6 shades (enough to put in my pocket) 😊 good luck!

I definitely do think its the companies fault for spoiling beauty influencers. Giving trips, PR, and focusing on the same damn people. And influencers need to check themselves period, doing makeup doesn’t make you a god or royalty so i need them to get off their high pedestals. And us the fans need to stop glorifying them like their gods as well.

Your brand was the first major brand to ever send me a PR package and to this day, I still get such a feeling of pride from using those products. I even have the postcard saved in a memory drawer. As a small company myself, I know the risk of sending influencers product and them not even acknowledging the time and effort that went into sending them the product. I think that MUG was pushed aside when Morphe stepped in with their 10% off code given to damn near every influencer.....at least every big one. So everyone started talking about Morphe instead only to push their codes to make even more money...like what they make already is not enuf. It's greed plain and simple. We all know that MUG products are by far better than Morphe products. Yet we still have Morphe crammed down our throats. I miss the days of MUG and I hope they make a comeback! They/Marlene truly deserves it! She built her brand in the US with the money she saved, unlike Morphe who just private labeled cheap made in China palettes.

I think this is why Michelle Phan left RUclips. She explained on her channel that the fame consumed her and it took quite a toll on her genuine and pleasant personality. Hence she needed a total detox, and after that I guess she realized the glamour behind the beauty community didn’t matter. If you look at her Instagram now, her perspective in beauty has changed. She wears little to no makeup and is finally comfortable in her own skin. Above all, she looks more at peace and I think that’s more important than anything else. I’m not saying that we should stop wearing makeup to reach some sort of enlightenment, but her story is an example on how toxic the beauty community can become for people
So thank you for recognizing quality over quantity. I’ve been a follower of the beauty community on YT for a long time and it becomes very distasteful to see drama in something as harmless as makeup. I now follow people who are more direct with their content.
Makeup is meant for everyone, And it’s sad to see influencers and companies out there using it to send the wrong messages to the world. I mean you take it off at the end of the day. And it’s supposed to be fun. So im happy you spoke out and thank you for that. I think it’s time we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture

Hi everyone! Thanks for the great and positive responses! I’ve been wanting to put it out there for a while. As much as I love Michelle and her content, I still think she made the right decision to leave and move on to bigger things. She deserves it after everything she has been through.
One thing beauty gurus today can learn from her is to know how to take ownership of their mistakes and to take a breather. I notice most Beauty RUclipsrs and other you tubers tend to make their problems bigger by trying to defend themselves more as a way to make them look more “human”. They would say sorry but it will be layered with a lot of excuses, which to me is not genuine. Or worse, they would pin the blame on someone else. I think it would be best for everyone to just be more direct with our actions, even if it means swallowing pride and elitist knowledge about something as simple as makeup.

I think it was not only important that you spoke up as one of the original beauty OGs of RUclips but commendable. You and Michelle Phan were the first two who I subscribed to and followed. I loved your integrity and honesty then and now and I truly admire that you chose to go a different path by sticking to your morals and what you believe in. But I think it’s funny how she doesn’t mention what influencer charged that $60k. High tier influencers charge a lot because they bring a lot of sales back. They should at least get 10% of the sales they bring from their videos. At the end of the day it’s strictly business and everyone has to get a fair pay

I'm no influencer, but I just gotta say, Marlena is MY OG beauty guru. Literally a decade ago I was struggling with covering up my skin condition (vitiligo) and I decided to message Marlena on her back then blog to ask her advice, and she sent me a very nice reply with her suggestion. I support this woman like crazy, because she's always been about the art. Back when youtube didn't even pay she was consistently uploading tutorials, some of which I followed and wore to parties. I remember when MUG came out with its first round of eyeshadows, and I was using the sade "preppy" as a contour shade and getting so many compliments on it (of course, contouring was the new thing then, haha) and I am so happy to say that I still use and love my MUG products, even if I'm Mexican and I use the warm porcelain shade for contouring now, and it reminds me how badly I need a tan, LOL. Shoutout to Marlena for always being so fucking classy and choosing being professional and an overall good person vs. getting the numbers.

Just the whole environment, the ridiculousness surrounding it, the waste produced, the palettes are getting boring. Do we need this much makeup, this many palettes that are so similar. So much poverty out there, we are filling our planet with all this waste. People need to step back and ask themselves some serious questions.

I definitely understand what you're saying about the industry today, I've noticed the changes over the past few years to now. Some of these changes caused me to take a step back from making videos or doing different makeup looks due to the higher standard influencers are now held to. I absolutely love makeup and the creative ideas that comes along with that! I’m here from lovelyti’s video and I am not shocked by what happens behind the scenes. I sense you have a big heart and millennials creating their own brand and making a name for themselves is a tough business. Big influencers and micro influencers need to have a niche and something that makes them stick to be noticed, subscribed to and followed by others. I think a lot of big influencers are overrated with inflated egos just to wear the same trendy face/makeup. I hope you keep doing your thing, stay true to yourself and your truth so you can finish strong👏🏾
I would love to know who is charging 20-60k for social media influencing so I could unfollow/fully unsupport immediately, that absolutely disgusts me. Teachers, Police Officers, and more are busting their tails every day and barely making a living. I love RUclips but I don’t believe any ONE deserves that much for being an influencer.

Ashley Hobbs I think is pretty easy see who are the money hungry influencers I mean who are the ones that are always talking about their so called humble origins and then they do closet tours and use lots of luxury items. The funny part is the can use as much luxury as they want, but they still look cheap.

It's like the kid in a cookie jar situation. A kid will take as many cookies as he can until his mom or someone of authority says no. The rates have probably slowly grown over the past 8 years and now they feel entitled and honestly delusional. Ad rates for traditional media i.e magazines, commercials, the super bowl ads things like that, have always been crazy high. So when Social Influencers became part of the market they could get a rate that's already high and then they keep raising the rate with no one telling them no.

I started a channel a while ago just to do makeup share tips and help friends out and to just share my love for makeup and skin care (because I am an esthetician and MUA)and I shut it down for a while because life happens. I restarted it a few years ago as me time after having a baby because I had fun doing it- I have only a few people following so nothing big but I stopped because I saw all the drama going on and didn’t really want to be a part of a community like that. I just wanted honest reviews and have fun with makeup and do tutorials- I’m tempted to come back because of the few true ones out there just to help build the community back to what it used to be. I love how genuine true and honest you are and always have been. I’ve personally never used MUG (yet) but will become a customer because of who you are Marlena- you are so classy and you stay true to who you are and it shows. ❤️
I noticed no one talked about makeup geek anymore and it breaks my heart! I bought makeup geek bc of the now big influencers of RUclips and now they don’t talk about them anymore... same thing with Sigma. Your shadows are amazing... still use them and I still love them! I think they are good brushes right? Oh wait, they can’t pay them anymore. Ah, I see. That’s crap. Use products you like and be honest. Don’t just push products that you are paid to promote.
Aww I think a lot of people still praise a lot of MUG products! I guess it's hard to compete with all the launches always coming out, but I know MUG has a rep for having lots of people's old favorites.

Makeup geek isn't affordable. The only thing affordable in their range is the single shadows
It is a little bit more expensive. It is made in the USA so they can't use workers that work 14 hour shifts every day and has 150 $ in total salary per month like the Chinese factories do. I rather save up to buy MUG.

I think it’s amazing that you are addressing all of this. I have a minuscule following, and truly enjoy just doing reviews for my friends, family, and acquaintances. I have loved makeup for years solely because of the OG RUclips which you had a HUGE influence on. I wish it wasn’t about the money, I feel like everyone would be WAY happier. The bigger influencers aren’t even relatable anymore with the amount of money they have. They are celebrity status at this point and are all lacking in being relatable. Now that MUG is in Target it is definitely easier to shop (coming from someone who loves instant gratification). Can’t wait to try your stuff soon!
Your brand was the first high end brand I ever bought from.. I still remember watching your makeup tutorials and buying your individual shadows and creating a z pallete that I still have.
