I agree, I love the sponge!! I hate spending forever blending my face makeup and because this is a bit stiffer with the microfiber it totally cuts that time in half and looks great!
So basically Nikkie lied. Just say “this brand asked me to review this sponge” not “I was scrolling on insta and saw this, here’s a link that MAY somehow be an affiliate link. So disappointing that so many of us fall for this crap. Does anyone agree with me about the shape tape foundation too, “put one on half your face and the other on the other half” soooo many you tubers did that when it came out and didn’t say the brand told them to. Stuff like that bugs me. This happens so often in videos and then you have 8838373 indie companies that don’t get shown at all because somewhere their brand isn’t paying for this crap. lol we all know they make money, we just want some honesty and when we're being lied to. She fabricated this whole campaign to seem like she "accidentally" found it on insta and the brand "happened" to see the video and offer a code. That is so wrong tbh. Just collab with them upfront. No one would have had a problem with that. Authenticity, honesty and integrity is crucial, for decent ppl but also for a brand, and Nikki is a brand and she made a mistake this time and lost some trust.

Also, I will say - Nikki did the same thing with the Nivea Men’s Sensitive post-shave balm where she tested it as a primer. It was also only $6 and to this day I absolutely adore it and use it everyday. I think Nikki’s videos are 30% authentic, 70% sponsored.

Y’all. Did anyone consider, that she got her discount code, AFTER she made the video? She doesn’t post her videos right after she makes them guys, there’s editing, and she puts them out at certain times. Personally, I think she enjoyed the sponge so much before she uploaded her video she reached out to them with her video, and got a discount code from her fans. Backing up why she didn’t mention the discount code in the video. I’ve tried the sponge and got almost exact results as nikki.

Exactly! You can definitely argue that she contacted them right after filming and then didn't post the video until the next day - hell, even the next week if she was busy. But, then you have to ask yourself why she didn't mention something in the description about it, and it also makes her announcement 4 days later seem like covering the trail. Maybe that's normal for her, though. I don't really watch her, so I dunno. Others have said the sponge performed as well as she said and that she's still using it, so there's a chance her endorsement of it was genuine. I don't think you can base any judgement on how bad her acting was during the review, since she seems to always be very over-the-top and dramatic. Being fake doesn't automatically mean she's lying.

That's why I can't subscribe to Nikki. As talented and creative as she is, I just can't trust her. I feel the same way about Jaclyn Hill as well
I don't trust big influencers on reviews in general (except for Tati, Jkissa, Alissa Ashley, Jeffree Star some times ). I watch them for entertainment and for their creativity. Every person who sees a review, trust it and instantly buy the product is a big naive. You should do more research based on your skin type, what do you want in a product and other things. You should keep in mind that everyone has different preferences. And some times all of these resourches won't be enaugh. I bought the makeup revolution concealer, it has very good reviews everywhere and when I tried it, it was bomb but dry as hell on my skin (also I don't use foundation), it was amazing as eyeshadow base but very uncomfortable so I ended up mixing it with another concealer.
Jaclyn comes on RUclips to make commercials ONLY-- except her last video, which is probably a bunch of damage control.

My point is, although I know she didn’t do the best thing here there’s so many people who turn their back on her and get extremely angry for these things and talking really terribly about her. She honestly just seemed disengenuous when she raved about certain products. And you could really tell with certain brands, the ones with notorious for being very hit or miss, such as Kylie cosmetics, she was pushing a persona as she reviewed it. I joke that it's like she's playing another person who's immitating her in those reviews, but tbh it's not that far off.
When I was watching this specific video of hers, she painted a fantasy (whether the sponge is good or not) I felt like I just HAD to buy this sponge. Like something came over me and I literally was putting in my card number and was like "Why am I doing this?" Like she got me good. I forreal was totally falling for that commercial she made. I'm glad I came to my senses.
It was $6. I think it looks cool so I bought it. Haven't used it yet though. I'm a sucker for velvety stuff.

Backing this up as I current work for a digital agency. When a guru links you elsewhere and the URL has a UTM link, that is indeed a campaign with her, to see how many of their customers convert from her video. That right there is a partnership.

I like to believe the best of people, and it sounds like you do, too. Overall I think that's a good thing. However, there's that evidence strongly points to this being a planned campaign. We should be aware that these campaigns do exist, and there are people who will lie or mislead for some not insignificant amount of money. Maybe she DOES love the sponge, but the point is we don't really know. Since I don't know, I will neither judge nor feel sorry for her, but I will be wary of taking videos where someone "happened upon" a product at face value.

I think tati’s opinion is very bias when it comes to something pricey.
This is why I stick to Jeffree Star when buying a product. I wait for his review, even if it comes later than others, but it’s worth it cause you know he’s gonna tell it like it is. He doesn’t do discount codes or sponsorships cause yes he doesn’t need the money but still you know he’s gonna be honest, he has dragged so many companies for shitt* products risking getting kicked out of their pr list and not being able to be first to review the product, but his audience’s trust means more to him, so his audience is thankful and rewards him with loyalty. He’s such an ethical person, we stan.

But there still is also the custom link. It says "Nikki campaign" in the link, I doubt they have a link like that for everyone
OKay I am not a NIkki fan in general.... but this sponge was honestly the best sponge I HAVE EVER BOUGHT IN MY LIFE. I whole heartedly agree that everyone needs to buy one. I have super textured skin and this sponge makes my foundation look flawless. I have never in my life had that happen.. esp with full coverage.... If it's true then it's def sneaky and dishonest regardless of how good the product is. She can just say it's sponsored; you can sponsor stuff and still give an honest review because as you say the product is great. I don't mind a sponsored product at all, but I hate it when influencers put all this effort into making it seem like it isn't when it clearly is :/

Greatly appreciated that you we're able to uncover this for us. I think Nikkie is super talented and such, but shit like this is EXACTLY why I have a slight hesitation to trust a lot of what these beauty gurus say. It's a bit disappointing considering I re-subscribed not long ago. I never use affiliate links, but it's the dishonesty to the audience that turns me off about this. Transparency is one trait ALL gurus SHOULD uphold to, but often don't. At least Kathleen Lights was keeping it honest, but unfortunately got the backlash from it all. I wish these influencers would really think about how when they do shady shit it really brings down the whole community when their caught in the act.

I feel like this video is digging up into the fact that Nikkie probably wasn’t being truthful abt getting a commission from the brand and pulled it off as a “first impressions” video, but making a boldddd claim abt how she does fake negative reviews for money is really deprecating to her channel and it needs actual solid evidence. Don’t get me wrong I love ur channel and nothing against the person who created this I just think that this video is more opinion based and digging into things that are too far fetched to be solid claims 😭 a little click bait if you ask me but I can appreciate someone who takes their time to get information for their videos ❤️

Rhiana Graham Because until Marlena exposed this practice no one thought to question it. Why are we making these people wealthy. They are not professional makeup artist. They are just putting makeup on themselves and not doing a good job at it. I cannot believe how many subscribers are so gullible. They are quick to buy their sponsored makeup pallets and lip products which are mostly absolute crap. Subscribers are most likely to buy a collab product rather than the product they are reviewing and it’s costing these major companies money because they are losing sales on the products they produce and pay these influencers to sponsor. Marlena opened a Pandora’s box because now subscribers are feeling deceived by their favorite influencers.

Regarding the code “Nikkie” working at checkout - Kathleen has had the same experience and she said it herself. I forgot which brand it was, but she jokingly entered “Kathleen” at check out as well even though she was never informed about having a discount code with that brand but IT WORKED! It was on her latest first impressions on new elf make up.
That being said, we don’t know for sure if Nikkie really intended to hide that fact from subscribers or the same thing that happened to Kathleen happened to her too. 🤷🏻♀️

Sarah Pohl its not about the sponsor. Sponsors are good, but there is a difference between saying "first impression" and already seen the product. It will sound extreme but that is a form of fraud. This kind of videos can affect the way we buy our makeup products and also prevent us from buying or trying other and higher quality products. Eventually, makeup corporations stop improving their products in quality because they can simply pay someone to talk good/bad about their product or other's product.
Don't get me wrong, I agree she is a business woman and obviously have to earn money, but this whole situation is illegal and that is what we consumers aren't thinking about, by defending this kind of situations or just saying "i dont care" we are affecting us. We are letting the makeup industry get away with it and we are hurting the influencers we like because this can affect their career.

I like Marlena but she kind of created this monster. Just as much as these influencers used her to get their come up, she used them to sell her products. I guess she assumed they were all friends and there was a loyalty but sadly no. It was just business.
However, Marlena pushed Jaclyn Hill, Nikkitutorials, Mannymua because they were on the rise and I get that she needed people to promote her products who were famous but she used smaller influencers to produce content for her website, used their tips and tricks and only charged them 100 dollars and never even gave them credit while sucking up to people who clearly were in it for the money.
Yes I saw some smaller influencers videos as well as I was there. I used to be on makeup geek website and was a regular contributor. I followed fancy face through there, nikki tutorials etc
I normally don't watch these kind of videos but I saw Nikkie and I clicked because I liked her video on the sponge as it is a real alternative to the Beauty Blender monopol. I also don't normally comment on YT but this video annoyed me so much. Why don't you just use even more minutes of Nikkies original video? Just show the whole thing so nobody will watch her video in full length anymore. You have so little own content and so much time filled with other peoples content. I don't know what the exact purpose of this video was because there was no proof either way, just rumors. Nikkie and nearly all of the other Influencers are first of all business owners and marketing experts. They have to market products and themselves. Nobody can be 100% transparent and for me that is fine. We as consumers have to be clever and think about who and what eats our money. We can't always blame brands and beauty gurus. Maybe I just did not get it but I think this stuff is part of what makes the beauty community ugly and I did not like this video at all. I don't want to hate on here but I had the urge to write my opinion down. Thanks for reading.

Meomix Mimix I soak it like the beauty blender- it seems to absorb the same. TBH. I use the Maybelline Fit me as a base (light) do my brows/eyes let it set then add Maybelline 24 HR foundation (full coverage). I use it for both foundations - if the sponge is too wet it will remove the foundation (I couldn’t tell by looking at the sponge- the beauty blender needs more water- but this one naturally feels dryer -I haven’t cleaned it yet. I’ve seen Water+Dawn (don’t quote me) or beauty blender cleaner. For $6- its at least worth the try- IMO. I would buy more. I feel like people w/acne/uneven/textured skin like me- it is honestly amazing. Hope this helps! 💕

I have acne scarring along my cheeks and wish that a full beat didnt emphasize those as much (plus beginning stages of wrinkles, I'm 32) or I would do more of a full coverage foundation. I just thought she looked really beautiful w a bit more of a natural look to her makeup, but I like her makeup when she does a full coverage look, too.
I meant the way she actually applies it, not the coverage level.

I've never gotten the hype with Nikki tbh. Her personality has never pulled me in. Sure her eye makeup is nice (and highly edited). But if you've ever seen unedited pictures of her actual skin makeup 😳😳😳. CAKEY AFFFF!!! I'm not into that look. I prefer RUclipsrs like Sam Ravendahl who show you how to make your skin look good in person.

It’s not a matter of making money or the law it (because according to this video, it wasn’t illegal because it wasn’t actually sponsored). But it’s a matter of honesty. How could you pretend and act like that in front of the camera, as if you accidentally stumbled upon a picture on Instagram, and you have to read the description like it’s the first time you’re doing it, while behind the scenes you were actually under an agreement with this brand!. Seriously. Couldn’t she just say: “guys, this company approached me, I tested their product and I truely honestly believe in it and stand behind it, otherwise I wouldn’t have agreed to make this review”?
I mean, just be honest. Tricks and stunts like this only make her seem like an unreliable, calculated liar to us and to her so-called “baby glow” followers. It stinks.
