Hi everyone! I wanted to clarify a mistake I made in the video regarding the Gaskell family dates. I mentioned that Elizabeth Gaskell’s daughter Marianne died in 1845, but that’s incorrect-Marianne actually lived until 1920. It was Elizabeth’s only son, William, who sadly passed away in 1845 at just 10 months old. I appreciate those of you who pointed this out and helped me get the dates right. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel!
I wish we could go back to these long letters... writing to a close friend, confiding through words.... nowadays is texting, emails... emoji! I really miss this aspect of the Victorian and previctorian period.
I try and write letters but it’s too easy to send a quick text. I do love the art of letter writing, the layout of the address and date, the ink pen, it’s all so neat. Am going to try to write more letters in 2025. Thank you for watching my videos.
This was such a lovely video! I love old Victorian houses! I’m so glad that the Brontes Parsinage and the Gaskel home are preserved. Thank you for taking these journeys and bringing us along for the ride!
I also love historical clothing, and I enjoy sewing reproductions of old pieces. It was so lovely of the curator to pull that dress out for you to examine! Thank you for taking us on this tour. I love Elizabeth Gaskell, and I hope I get to see her home for myself some day.
I did have a little hand clapping moment when she pulled the dress out. The pattern piecing was great, you could see how every bit of fabric was used no matter if the pattern matched or not.
This is a place I'd love to visit! It has such a lovely feeling to it. You captured the magic of the place and their lovely friendship 🙏 It's great that the volunteers offered you such a personal museum experience ❤ Thank you for your beautiful videos! 🥰✨
It felt so nice in the the house, I think because there are no ropes keeping you away from the furniture and the volunteers are so friendly, it was a warm place to be. The even came and found me to let me know the tea room was closing soon and did I want a brew. I will be going back I am sure. Another place to put on your visit Wishlist. :-)
Yes, what a bell! I'm glad it was a good visit and it helped to change your view of Mrs Gaskell, can understand how you thought about her. Charlotte's close friends were so loving and protective to her, and enduring friendships too. We are learning such a lot from you, and every video is a joy to watch, thank you so much Kate. All the best for 2025
Thank you for watching. I am happy to put my hands up and say I wasn't sure about Mrs Gaskell before but now I have seen her in a new light and will reread the biography she did with a fresh pair of eyes. Happy New Year to you too, 2025 is going to be so fun.
What a stunning house! - I would love to live in a place like this with no modernisation at all! Charlotte must have enjoyed staying here with the congenial company of Mrs Gaskell.
I think the place would have been amazing in its hay-day, it would have had a collection of servants that would have kept it neat and well run. Manchester must have been so busy for Charlotte but she would have enjoyed the luxury I'm sure.
I really need to read Gaskell's biography of Charlotte. I need to read more of her books, too, honestly; Wives and Daughters is one of the best things I've ever read Also just listening to the description of their dynamic, it sounds like your typical "extrovert adopts an introvert" situation lol
I agree, I do think Mrs Gaskell took Charlotte under her wing. I wanted to find the biography as an audiobook so I could listen in the car and on dog walks but haven't found a voice/narrator I could cope with yet. I have reread parts of it a few months ago but it's heavy going and I had other books on the go that took over my interest. Maybe I need to hunt again.
I have always wanted to read the biography by Mrs Gaskell. Seeing her house was a treat. It has stimulated me to looking into more of her books. Cranford was the only book I knew although I had seen the BBC (I think) productions of Wives and Daughters and North and South. I am going to set myself a challenge to read some of her books in the new year. I loved seeing the dress up close. How beautiful it was. Thank you for taking us along.
The BBC did do Cranford as a series a while ago and I must admit I never watched it which isn't like me, I love a costume drama. I am so pleased you have a New Year challenge from my video, that's really made me smile. I hope you enjoy them. Let me know how you get on. The clothes were great, seeing them up close was such a treat. Thanks for watching.
Really interesting, thank you for all your work putting these videos together and your research! I am a fan of both these women, such talented writers.
Lovely and interesting to watch post Christmas, thank you very much. Its great to visit these places with you. I was born in Knutsford, and spent early years in Macclesfield. Charlotte had such true steadfast friendships, all very much part of her life. I loved the doorbell!
The doorbell was great and could be heard all round the house, forget these camera doorbells, you need a pull one. I am hoping to get to Knutsford one day. I feel so much better about their friendship after making this video, I was always worried it was one sided and that Mrs Gaskell was overpowering but I don't think that anymore.
Oh those old letters. My passion is books and old style hand writing. Old type machines, feather pens, old magnifying glass aso. Elisabeth Gaskell seemed to be such nice person. Thx and Happy New Year dear Kate. 🎊🎉🎊
I love writing bits and bobs too, I always look at these old ink pens and imagine what they have written over the years, what stories they could tell. Thanks for coming along with me and I'm glad you got to see some nice pens. :-) Happy New Year to you too. x
Lovely video. I was first acquainted with Elizabeth Gaskell's work through watching the 2004's BBC tv series of North and South, that I loved 😍, with Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. I started reading afterwards some of her works. I found that her work was more about social realism and the Industrial revolution which was then contemporary. Her middle-class characters had distinct voices with local dialect, so you knew who talked. I was so excited about this video and you truly delivered! 🤩 Merry Holidays and a happy New Year 🎊
I loved that version of North and South too. I haven't see it in a long time, might need to revisit it. I can see how Mrs Gaskell and Dickens got on with their views on the treatment of the work class (as they refer to it). The industrial revolution must have been amazing to watch and provide such a good back drop to her novels. I am so pleased you enjoyed this video, I will admit I was worried about this one. It took an age to edit and make and seemed to be doomed with the sound, forgetting to record bits and I struggled to concentrate on what I was saying I was so tired. But...everyone's positive feedback has made it all worthwhile. Thank you.
Great video. Now planning a visit to Manchester to see Mrs Gaskell’s house and I’m enjoying listening to her Life Of Charlotte Brontë on Audible. Happy New Year!
You must go for a visit and they had some lovely looking cakes in their tea room. Ask to ring the bell, I think they are very used to it. Have a great time and thank you for watching my video.
Just watching your video now. My fella will be liking all ya posts coz on the TV he is logged in. James. H but it is me liking your videos so I thought I better subscribe. Lol. I've been obsessed about the brontes for a while now since we went Howarth 20 years ago. Then we went Mrs Pankhurst house the other week and we had chance to go to Mrs Gaskells house... And what do I find. She was friends with a bronte. So thanks for this video. My 8 year old was messing too much so we didn't stay long.. But the volunteers were awesome and our ticket let's us go back which we will. Mum is a fan of Gaskell. So so glad we spotted it. We didn't get chance to ring the bell. We forgot as it was getting late x we had one hours to explore which wasn't enough. Pankhurst house is just around the corner. Amy grainger videos are also fab and miranda Mills. Who are also a fan of Bronte x keep up the good work
Thank you for watching and it must be nice seeing the house again. I will check out Ruby Granger, I love any book RUclips videos I already follow Miranda Mills. I had planned to visit the Pankhurst house but time ran away with me (which is always does when I am in an old house or a book shop). Next time. Hope you get back to Haworth again soon, it really is my happy place.
Love this, hope to visit next year. Incidentally the walking skirt video was the first one I saw, I knew I'd enjoy watching the rest :) I owe you a thank you too, after entering the book draw a friend saw it and bought me the book for Christmas - I'm so very lucky. Happy New Year :) xx
That’s a good friend, keep that one. 😆 I’m so pleased you got in, it’s great isn’t it. The skirt in snow video really was the beginning of an adventure for me. I have had so much fun since. Thank you for watching and being part of this little community.
It doesn't say different, it says she died in 1920. Marianne married in 1866 after her mother's death and it's through Marianne's son that Gaskell's descendents survive.
Oh no, *$?! (plus swear words I am too polite to repeat). You are totally right, I just looked back at my notes and it seems I wrote 1820 first, then crossed it out because, as you say its 1920, and then wrote a scribble that I can't read. I have learnt a valuable lesson, don't record when you are tired. Thank you for flagging this, I will get a pinned comment to highlight this mistake.

More than happy to take you all along with me and thank you for your continued support. Worth a visit if you ever get the chance.

I know, who would have thought that I would have this many people wanting to see my very niche videos in just 8 months. I am over the moon.
Very interesting video. Having never read an Elizabeth Gaskill novel which would you recommend starting on?
I enjoyed North and South but haven’t read Mary Barton which a lot of peoples’ favourite. Maybe we need to give them a go.
