The issue with video's such as this is, one will view it, and never actually practice it, and believe it will work when needed. The over whelming vast majority of citizen's if not all, were originally taught not to harm other's some grow up learning it a way of life and some don't. Those that don't are subject to getting hurt, those that do, gain experience by doing it. Thus those that don't actually need to practice deliberately hurting someone which goes against their entire ideaology.
Much in the same way one can view how to utilize a hammer to drive a nail, but can't actually do it without practicing using the hammer and nail in real life. I've read articles and viewed video's where as a martial artist with years of experience in a dojo, getting their ass kicked in a real life engagment with someone who has actuall experience of harming someone in real life.
All those hook techniques some teach just don't work in a real life, real speed, actual altercation. Developing the mindset to deliberately hurt someone which goes against one upbringing aka ideaology take practice. I'd personally suggest, one use a heavy bag and or one of those practice dummies to practice swing a cane for instance to gain some actuall experience as to how a physics involving how a cane reacts when striking an object vs just swing it in open air.

I take one look at this guy and say to myself, he's probably an excellent author and very educated, but he looks like he's never had a fight in his life an he certainly doesn't look like he bothers to stay in shape, which is of paramount importance in a fight. I've been in the martial arts for over 40 years, I was a cop in the South Bronx for 15 years and I run my own studio. Everyone always asks "what is a good legal self defense weapon" and on that score, a cane is an excellent choice, but if you don't know how to fight in the first place you have no business complicating the matter by bringing a weapon into the picture that you don't know how to use properly and probably don't know how to retain. Take the information in this video with a very large grain of salt.

AGrayPhantom I have a unbreakable umbrella also the premium version with the crooked handle and the telescopic version. those umbrellas like walking sticks are useful for self defense and are totally legal to carry around anywhere.

Are you still around? I'm looking at getting one of these umbrellas and wondered which one you find most useful? Thanks.

We can also use a crooked handle Umbrella instead of stick for same applications I assume..

I think that this is dangerously simplistic advice.
For an untrained defender, the best approach is to back away, quickly, keeping a safe distance from your attacker.
Stay out of his reach and make low strikes to his shins and knees, until he is writhing in pain and is barely able to stand.
Then run and call the police, or if you feel that you are still in danger, strike other vulnerable parts of your attacker's body.
If you try lots of fancy moves, against a skillful knife artist, he will charge in close where you lose your reach advantage and pepper you with gruesome stab wounds.
You will only antagonize a skillful attacker and find yourself bleeding on the ground.
If a person threatens you with a knife or gun, to rob you, don't hesitate
    Quickly give him your valuables.
Then move away with your cane, at the ready.
Unless you are a hardcore martial artist, willing to test and to practice and to master each one, don't attempt to remember100 cane techniques,
Don't try to defend yourself with the type of cane shown in Michael's video.
Get yourself a robust fighting cane, cover it with a foam noodle and then practice with agile, capable attack partners.
Your defensive and offensive moves must become simple--uncomplicated, instinctual and instantaneous..
Do anything you can to avoid a street fight. Street fights are dangerous and entirely unpredictable.
Second and third attackers can appear out of nowhere. A person who attacks you, innitially with fists,, may have a gun or knife hidden where you don't see it.
Frankly, Michael, I think you should take this video down, so that vulnerable folks don't get themselves into big trouble.
Sorry, but that's my genuine opinion.

The cane can be used as a prop you can act crippled, like drunken kung fu you look sloppy and off balanced and you fool your opponent or attacker what ever the case by appering to be weak when strong

Michael, one or 2 good tips.....but....DON'T try & slide cane down to sweep the knife away, DON'T try & hook the neck (you couldn't even get the crook around the young guy's thin neck), DON'T try & strike small, specific targets eg hand, DON'T try fancy locks - these will get you killed! You need gross motor actions - heavy, repeated strikes to big areas. Remember the aggressor will not stand still. They will be moving, probably fast & aggressively. They may be wearing heavy clothing. They might be off their heads on alcohol or other drugs. They might not feel pain.
PS Amazing canes can be purchased at Cane Masters. They are very strong - & can be taken everywhere, unlike metal ones etc.

If the guy has a knife you strike the hand/wrist holding the knife to disarm then strike the head or you could easily lose.

Uh no. A ball or dull soft toy would not. Or a piece of paper. Lol but many things can. But you still need real training for say a rolled up magazine to be effective.
