    I'm an auxiliar in Madrid, so it's really cool to see the similarities and differences as an aux in Mallorca. I always wondered how it would be on an island, especially since I've never been to any of the Balearic Islands. You got a new subscriber! Thanks, Jared!

    I am going to be an auxiliar in Palma this year and I'm so glad I found this video. You've been super helpful and this is making me even more excited for the move. I have a decent amount saved but am definitely a bit nervous about finances. How do you find students for private English lessons?

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  Год назад +1

      Hi Marissa! I hope you have an amazing experience. I would recommend talking to the teachers at your school - most of them will know a handful of people that are always looking for lessons and that can be a good way to get started. Other than that, if you join any sort of extra curricular activity, you can usually meet people that are looking for lessons as well. It is fairly common here.

    Awesome video. Question: During your first day in school, what different types of information did you include in your powerpoint presentation to introduce yourself to the students?

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! I talked about a few things but basically just tried to do a brief background:
      - Where I grew up, and a little bit about it (the weather, people, culture, etc.)
      - My family
      - What I liked to do when I was younger
      - University & what I studied
      - What I did for work before moving to Spain

    The bike view is beautiful! Is bike riding their common? Do they have uber, metro, subway any other modes of transportation? In your school do they lesson plan for you or have any set curriculum they want you to teach or do you have to lesson plan? How much money do you think we should have saved up? Any school recommendations? How do you find your 1 on 1 students? Posting up signs? Social media? Thankyou for any reply 🌷

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  Год назад +1

      Bike riding is super common! Mallorca doesn't have Uber but they have cabs, city and regional buses (that are very reliable), and a subway between the two main cities. It's easy to get around. The lesson planning is variable - each week my teachers let me know what they were covering with their classes and I tried to come up with something relevant. When there were holidays, I covered what we did in the states for those holidays. The amount of money you save up is pretty variable - your biggest expense will be rent and any travel that you want to do - so I would think through answers to those questions and try to budget based on that. The stipend covers basic rent, food and utility expenses. You'll be matched with a school without much input, so my recommendations there won't be super valuable. The best way in my experience to find 1 on 1 students is through the teachers at your school. They will generally know people that are interested in lessons and can connect you

    Hi! Do you recommend getting a TEFL certificate? I know it is not required but does it look good if you're trying to get a side job as an English tutor?

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  Год назад

      In my experience a TEFL certificate was not required to get tutoring jobs but they were mostly through connections from the school! If you want an official job at a tutoring business, it could be helpful

    Hi there thank you for sharing your experience. I found your video really helpful. I applied to the NALCAP this year and just recently heard that I will be placed in Andalucía. However, I am a little bit nervous because I only have experience being a para not a teacher and assumed that the NALCAP was more of a program where you assist the teacher instead of actually teaching the whole class. Do you get the option of telling the teacher your comfortability level of teaching whole class or do you just get thrown in it?

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  Год назад +1

      Hi - congratulations on your placement! I had no experience being a teacher going into the program either.
      A few thoughts:
      #1 - It really depends on the teachers that you work with. Some will ask you to lead lessons - others will ask you just to assist with their pre-planned lessons.
      #2 - No matter what, they will always be in the classroom to support you
      #3 - You can 100% tell them what you are and are not comfortable with. Your job is an assistant, not the full teacher, so even if you are “leading” a lesson it will be material that you prepared or a fun game - not “teaching” of their course material if that makes sense

    Do you have set prices for private lessons? Are you able to give a ballpark figure or range what to charge

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  2 года назад +1

      generally the baseline here in mallorca is 15 euros per hour. you could probably go up to 20 based on how far you are travelling and how much prep you have to do for the lessons

    About how much would you say is a good amount to save before going in October ?

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  Год назад

      It really depends on:
      1. The region
      2. How much travel / non-frugal activities you want to do
      3. If you plan to do any private english lessons or not
      I would recommend creating a budget:
      1. Look at your basic/required expenses like rent/food - and make sure you have enough savings to cover a few months
      2. The rest of your savings should be determined by how much additional spending you want to do - either for eating out, traveling, or something else

    How safe would it be for a lady to move to Mallorca on her own in your opinion?

    • @jaredkaufman
      @jaredkaufman  Год назад +3

      I would say very safe. For reference, one thing I noticed when I moved here was that many of the taxi drivers are female, which I think is a good indicator of how safe it is here for women.

      my girlfriend did the program with me and we split rent. In some regions, living alone is feasible. In Mallorca, you’ll likely need to live with roommates
