TEACH ENGLISH IN CHINA
Watch until the end to see snippets of me teaching. Slight Wardrobe and hair malfunction but we'l ignore that.
This week I taught Henry VIII (8th). Great lesson to teach. Really enjoyed it and the kids loved it.
*I made a very slight mistake, Edward did become King after Henry although it was very short.

Perfect example of what an English teacher abroad should do rather than moving overseas to have a cheap lifestyle and forget why they moved abroad.
I am a professor of ESL. All I see is an intelligent young man who is making contributions to resolve trending, pedagogical issues in language acquisition with a diplomatic impact. Great job Anthony!
You mean a smart dude doing his part to help Chinese students learn English & building bridges while at it. Got it.
MrVpassenheim She is using jargon, not being pretentious 🤦🏼♀️
I agree. Shallow and pedantic.
Huh, teachers move around in between lessons while students stay in the classrooms? Seems more efficient than my school
Yep, imagine if it were the other way around. 40-45 students in each class trying to walk through the halls. You should see it at lunchtime, it looks like a bicycle marathon. They get 2 hour lunch breaks, so they can ride home and back. The cafeteria can't hold all those students, so usually only the students who live like in the outer parts of the province and live on campus (high school that is) eat there.
But our school changed to make us move..
You have the children so engage with the history lesson. I was thinking about teaching in South Korea, but China is calling me!
+Ebony Nicole : Hi there, are you interested in teaching in China? email info@guidedsuccess.org, please.
+Ebony Nicole ... if you do go ... go to the south where there is less racism ... i personally witnessed a chinese english school manager refuse to even consider interviewing a black man in beijing for an adult english teaching position because ... as she said "he's black!" .. really ... in the south they may only care about money ... but they hate foreigners (and that includes me ... and i'm white) less ... just my two cents...
Hi there! how much does a teacher in China earn in euro or dollars?
Are you taking the piss? Never mind, you don't know what that means. This video is very representative of teaching in China though. He should have filmed a better class. Or maybe, this was the best class and his other classes are more akin to sitting inside a cage full of chimpanzees. Because, English class is their only opportunity in the whole day to relax.
Sameeee
from 6:10 as you walk into the classroom. "Foreign teacher doesnt understand Chinese, Speak English!"
Do you know how many times the other teachers would talk about you because they know you cant understand them? When I was teaching English in china i was already fluent in mandarin and gave a lot of teachers a shock when they realized I could understand them.
+lifesnova I had a really good relationship with my colleagues so I never worried about that. They are shocked even if you say ni hao haha!
Actually in 6:10 the man said in Chinese :"if someone tease the foreign teacher by some bad words in Chinese ......." I thought the rest sentences should be " he will have trouble"
lol. 6:10 The Chinese teacher is making an introduction about the English Teacher and warning the students to be respectful. He said and as I quoted "Anyone who bully the English Teacher because he doesn't understand Mandarine will be... " The last few words were not taken in the video, which might be "punished...". I am a Chinese from Beijing.
Lee Raymond out of the three you sir are the most accurate
Lee Raymond yea and then he continues “will write...” prob continues with “extra english homework” or something
You have completely reinforced my decision to teach English abroad, you seem so happy and your students seem to love you!
seems like the students like you and you enjoy the work. Good for you, keep up with your good work
Thank you Anthony for taking me through a typical day of your life as an ESL teacher in China. You are a very likeable young man and a fantastic teacher. You have definitely inspired me to consider China as an option for teaching English.

Repeat after me class: "Whey aye man"
Please represent us Northerners well out there!
Your students seem very engaged and it's obvious they enjoy having you as their teacher. Thanks for sharing!
The classes seem more relaxed, less disciplined than I imagined.
Students basically have fun and lots of interactions with the foreign teacher. There are also grammar lessons taught by Chinese teachers which will be more disciplined.
I think you are mistaken the breaks for the lesson. The lesson is at the end. Any other time is just a break for the kids and thats where they are moving around and making noise etc. They often stay in the classroom for break.
divorced beheaded died is my new jam
The kids seem so nice and friendly.
You are great! Your students must love you. Looks like you are enjoying. Keep up the good work and making difference in people´s lives.
Great energy. Those kids are lucky to have ya.
These kids seem a lot nicer than the kids where I went to school.
Thank you for sharing this video, Anthony! This was a great resource and was very enjoyable to watch. Hope you had a fun and rewarding experience in China.
+Nkiruka O. Thank you so much :)
I am very nervous about this, I just signed up a contract with a school in China.
Hi have you started !? I am in the process of my application
I taught in Taiwan last year. Been thinking about going to Japan next but maybe I'll go to China;)
Shannon Gallagher how was it teaching in Taiwan?
@@gameman2936 it was nice. I loved it. Granted, you have to be open to try new things and go with the flow. The way they do things can drive you bonkers at times. Overall, I had a great experience.
Shannon Gallagher AMAZING!
At 6:12 the teacher was saying let's not bully the English teacher who can't speak English lol
are you serious ? Looool
wrong translation
The chinese teacher says: No one should tease this english teacher with chinese language. Basically he is warning the students to be respectful.
such a good vid man. thanks for repping the snickers bar as well
I was a foreign exchange student in China, and my classmates were not nearly as excited/energetic as your students are in 中学!
Nobody:
Anthony: **introducing a living, breathing human being** "Oh, thank you, 'Football Game'! This is 'Football Game'!"
Hahaha what a gem of a moment! Thanks for the reminder :'D
@@MrAnthWard do you still live in china?
I'm reading comments and am like, is nobody gonna talk about a kid named football game for real
Your teaching skills in the classroom video are very impressive!
NICE video. Thanks for sharing, man. Best of luck and success for you and your students.
Great video mate, it's really nice to see such positivity. I've been here for 4 years and I'm still loving it! I'm jealous you get to teach history too, that looks awesome. I teach kids so there isn't so much variety. Good job!
***** Thanks, great to here. Where abouts in China are you? Yeah history was probably my favourite. They loved it!

JamesBelcher1 Hi. I’m about to start my TEFL training and I just wanted to know if you had to learn Mandarin before or at the start of your teaching journey? My language skills are none and I’m kinda nervous.

Really interesting to see the difference between different schools from different countries
Echoing another comment, I was thinking of trying to teach in South Korea. But watching this has got me considering China now. Really love your lessons and love your attitude. The kids seem to as well. Really well done!
Thank you for making this video. After visiting China in August i fell in love and started to look for jobs. I start my course in February and your video has really helped reassure me thank you.
amazing history lesson!!!!! love this anthony!!!!
As a English teacher who cannot be regarded as a fluent oral speaker, I am browsing RUclips to learn how to give authentic classroom instructions in English, slowly playing each frame to catch what you said(My friend says I look funny). Your students are lucky for they can have a native speaker teacher. I already subscribed you and also hit the bell 🛎 so that I can be noticed every time you upload a new video. Please make more videos. I would appreciate it if you conclude some real classroom recordings. 👏👏👏
this is amazing! thank you for sharing!!
Thank you so much for sharing these videos. I'm going to be teaching English next year in China. I'm extremely nervouse but excited too. I'v started learning Manderian and more of the culture.
I am a little less nervous now thanks to these vids. Your so confident and really enjoy your job.

Anthony, you are so positive ! Thanks for this video :-*
This is great! I'm planning to teach in Vietnam, and I have ZERO experience. This video's lightheartedness and the relaxed teaching atmosphere make me feel a little better for the time being (still have a year of school left, though).
I had seen a comment below where you said you had drama experience that helped with nerves -- perhaps my incomplete performance degree/experience will be of use after all!
I'm really quite nervous about it all, though I've made lots of friends in both of Vietnam's biggest cities who are very reassuring. They tell me that the best way to teach is to just keep it interesting. I think you did just that!
+Bryan Whitehead Once you get there and just do it, it's amazing how it all just comes to you and once you've done your first lesson, you'll be thinking what was I worrying about. I always say, if I'm enjoying it then they will be enjoying it and that worked for me. I also had zero experience. Just enjoy every minute of it.
+Anthony Ward Thanks for the reply! I can't wait to get started. :)
+Anthony Ward Very impressive Anthony, especially given that you had no prior experience. You're gifted at teaching. As someone wrote above, I wish I'd had you as a history teacher when I was in school. Really good, thanks for posting.
Amazing video! Loved watching every minute
Wow, thanks Sandy, It's so nice to hear that. Thank you :D
Hahahaha xD "I want you to point at someone that is ugly"
Don't have to worry about political correctness in China I suppose.
porta
Gotta love it. SJWs haven't ruined it
HappyBird lol in China its normal for everyone to go up to you and exclaim “how handsome” or “you grew kind of ugly”
That looks so cool, and the kids are so cute
I wish I learned history the way you taught it! That video of the head... had me taken aback. haha. Your kids looked like they really enjoyed their lesson. Thanks for showing us what Chinese schools and classrooms are like! I've always wanted to sit in on one. Do you think they would allow a foreign visitor to sit in on the class?
love your post! great one
Thanks very much for this informative video. I am looking into doing this an this is so interesting to see.
Andrew FlashChannel Gibbs Go for it and have a great time :D
Good English class you gave!
Hallo, teacher. I am sooooo surprise to see your video!!!!! because I never think that I can see my small and common school online even I don't know why yutobe recommended me this video. I remember you as English teacher, and I'm sure that I am in grade 2 when you post this video(it's sad you are not teach me before) and I am so excited to see my music teacher! I remember she always praise you in class because she said you are more humble and friendly and hardworking than the former foreign teacher who taught me before. That's so coincidence. I spent my most happiness life in this school, teachers all very nice and classmates also very friendly. I often recall the happy time, but the school has been renovated for a long time. It become totally different. I always wants to see my school originally but it is sad that I never take video at that time. So,thank you for letting me see the original school at that time. Good luck and God bless you.(I am not good at English so maybe have some grammar errors)
Hello Cathy! This message has brought a tear to my eye. Thank you so much for reaching out and I am so glad that I was able to bring something for you to remember how Shunyi No.3 used to look! x
@@MrAnthWard hhhh same too.I didn't drop tears until I saw your comment. if you can go back to Shunyi, there is nothing changed than before. And actually, I want to be a foreign Chinese teacher too, many be 5years later so for now I need study hard especially English. And actually I saw myself and some of my classmates in your other video hhh.
Thank you for this insight. Not that I plan to teach English, but interesting to see a bit of Chinese school!
+Maximum Axiom Glad you enjoyed. Are you heading to China at all? If not then it's definitely worth a visit.
Such wonderful students😊
This is awesome! :) It sounds like China is such an adventure. I'm a Canadian who moved to London to work as a teacher and it's pretty challenging here for me, so I can only imagine how challenging this was!!
A very interesting video Anthony and very glad you gave us a glimpse into the real life of a teacher which is often glamourised by many teachers! I will go teach english in China soon as I want to gain fluency in mandarin, I want to implement my knowledge of Ancient Rome into lesson plans to make things fun and interesting, your class on Henry VIII wives' was very inspiring!
How are they so well-behaved in your class?? I teach middle school as well and whenever I open my mouth to say two sentences the class erupts into chatter and its hard to bring them back to attention. I speak as simply as possible so they can understand and I give them enough chances to speak as well, maybe about 50/50 teacher/students. I teach in a big city and many of the students' families are quite well off so maybe that has something to do with it but idk...
Ivan Berezowski There could be a mix of reasons. Try watching a Chinese teachers class if you can. Take tips from them as that's what the students are used to.
As a last resort (!) there is a an easy way to remedy kids who won't behave. Record a class on your phone and post the clips of the students misbehaving on Douyin (TikTok). Show it to their parents.

What an awesome video !
Great work mate, about to start teaching English in South America.
Good luck, the pay is not the best and many companies will try to avoid paying you your salary, hope you have done your research
+Musti do you speak from experience?
Ashley New No, just from alot of research and common sense. In South America their economy is not the best, and corruption is common there with English teachers being screwed over, if i was you, i would do my research deeply first
Cheers for the warning, I'd agree with you in places like Venezula. But I am mostly going to be in Peru, Argentina, Columbia and Brazil. I've done plenty of research and have lots of contacts out there. I urge you not to be overly weary, some people can have bad experiences anywhere. Just have your wits about you when you are out there.
Ashley New Hi! Let me know how it’s gone this far!
Currently teaching in Beijing right now! Similar experience. It is definitely an adjustment, getting used to their school schedule. I am in from 8-5:45 it is crazy!

Great Video! Good luck!
This has really made me feel a lot better about going. I'm teaching in Haining on the 8th July for two weeks, and watching this and how you teach the class and interact with the staff and students has made me feel a lot better about this! I feel I can confidently plan my lessons better too, which is what I'm struggling with. Thank you! :)
I know the exact same feeling. I was worried about having to plan a lesson constantly and worried about ideas but it's amazing how you just pick it up so quickly. Once you're thrown in there you just do it and it's great fun. Enjoy it and any questions then please ask.
Thank you, I will do if I have any. :)

I was at a high school NW of Nantong. You got a lot better audio and video stuff than I had. Plus, no video monitoring of my teaching. Later this year going to Romania or Russia. Love to teach, kids are sponges for learning if treated right. China is a great place if you stay away from the Government. I am former military and they didn't like that.
