- Learn to tie the Double River Pig Fly with Nick Gellerstedt from Musky Fool Fly Fishing Co. This fly is an adaptation of the original River pig. Beefed up and modified for application on larger river systems and even lakes. This fly is a jig at its core. It is intended to nose dive on the pause and have the ability to be fished up to depth. This is a go-to bug when fish seem sluggish and don’t want to chase a swim fly in the upper half of the water column.
A couple tying tips for the Double River Pig. The added lead on the underside of the front hook is crucial to achieve a hook point up orientation on the retrieve. Having the hooks riding up allows you to make bottom contact without getting hung up as often. You will also want to remember that during the tying process that this fly will ride hook up. This is important when placing the feather fins and flash. I like my fins to be in the belly region of the fly and the flash to flank the sides. This helps give the pig a strong resemblance to the majority of bait fish.
As always fly tying is meant to be creative. So have fun with it and make it your own. Experiment with tailing materials, try different collar styles, and as always fish colors that you are confident in.
