Before you purchase a stryd foot pod, know this … My stryd is less than two years old and won’t hold a charge. When I contacted stryd to get the battery replaced, I was told they couldn’t do that and that I would have to buy a new foot pod. However, they were “generously” going to give me a 35% discount on a new foot pod. I asked them “Why in the hell would I buy a new one when you guys wouldn’t even stand behind my current one?” I’m not saying everyone will experience the same battery issue I am experiencing, but you need to be aware that they do not have a good system in place to address that situation when it does occur. It’s just incredible to me that they can’t swap out a battery and charge me some fee for that instead of requiring me to buy a whole new unit. Incredibly disappointed in their customer support.

I’ve been using Stryd for over a year. It does all the things you say, but oddly enough, over time, I found that I still have a better feel for where my pace and HR should be at race time than what power I should be targeting. It’s hard to get an intuitive feel for whether a given power target is right for the day and then if you feel strong, for example, it’s hard to know how to adjust your power target. I end up tweaking my pace target instead. So, I end up watching my power but not running to a power target. But I like the form data it also provides. And I like that it’s rechargeable, even though my Milestone lasts forever on a button battery.

Great review. The thing I love about it is that its so accurate when it comes to pace and distance. I no longer have to rely on GPS from my Apple Watch or Garmin especially when I'm in a crowded race with tons of people using their mobile devices. It's really good. Accurate metrics for me is such a game changer.

I might be able to snag one of these off an Ebay auction for almost 50% less than retail. The more accuarte distance and pace data intrigues me even more than the power data since I live in NYC and well buildings lol. But still even 120$-130$ is no cheap investment. Is it really that good that it would be a steal at that price and dumb not to snag it?

I saw you show the stryd a few weeks ago when demoing zwift running. I got one, tried zwift running and hated every minute of the treadmill. However, I have been using the stryd and my garmin watch for my faster interval runs each week. My indoor track at the gym is 10.75 laps per mile, and the stryd nails my distance within a step as each mile passes. The pace is also spot on. It is so much easier to do intervals with the computer in the watch monitoring pace, time and distance. Its like having a zwift workout on your wrist. I have a fenix 5 and its not accurate at all for these measurements (about 8.5 to 9.5 laps for a mile instead of 10.75), the stryd nails it. Maybe I don't need this, but its a nice to have.

Hi there, good review! I just want to correct you when you state that Stryd doesn’t account for elevation. It absolutely does with a change in your power output. Power output will also change with fatigue, dehydration, recovery, environmental temp extremes etc etc. That is exactly why power is so useful.

Thank you for your review and your transparecy Taren. Funny thing, I asked you couple days ago if you were using a running powermeter and you just answered all my questions about that😉 Keep going!

To keep leveling in zwift, but still be able to keep all the data from the stryd power meter. Save the zwift run when you are done and the data collected with your watch (Garmin). Afterwards go in Garmin and delete the zwift data which is probably automatically updated to your Garmin account. That way you get to level up on zwift, have all the more precise data from the Stryd pod and avoid having workouts duplicated in garmin.

Great review Taren! I've been using Garmin Run Power the past several months leading up do Challenge Daytona on Sunday. I really like power on the run, it is much easier to stay within my zones and actually go easy on the easy days. Although, I do believe it's important to know your Pace Zones and HR Zones just in case it's not measuring right, and if we know anything from bike power meters is that sometimes they can read incorrectly. Garmin doesn't do a very good job of displaying the Power data; something they definitely need to work on. Final Surge does a terrific job of displaying all of the Power data, great for the data junkie. Anyway, thanks for the insights I've been eyeing one of these for a while now.

Got a pair of those during black friday thanks to your video, I wish I had it last week for my marathon but can't wait to train with it! I know I always start off way too fast, if I could know my power numbers I would be able to avoid going into the red without feeling it and paying for it in the closing stage of the race.

Taren, check out the Datarun premium datafield or Powerdashboard for Stryd plus in the Garmin IQ app store, for getting all kind of power metrics on your Garmin watch! I use it for marathons and hilly runs, to keep an even effort and maximize the result. By the way, you mentioned that the Stryd footpod is especially interesting for data geeks. I find that in general it is great for precise pacing; on the 400 meter track, trails with twists and turns, in a forest or a city with tall buildings etc. And getting the right distance in those situations is nice as well.

Thanks Taren, I'm using the RD Pod with my 935, to get the running power, however, I do feel the measurements are sometimes misleading, e.g. same power of my fartleks throughout, where clearly I needed more power in the faster splits.
Also, Garmin does not do anything with that data, it's just there in the exercise, but nothing smart really going on. Liked the insites Stryd gave you. Anyways, if you did a comparison to the RD POD would be great. Thanks, love your channel.

Great review for my use. Thank you. Perfect timing. Have you seen runscribe, dual pods... Do you know anything about them?

  • @stevendeckert6373
    @stevendeckert6373 5 лет назад

To me, the best benefit of an accurate footpod like stryd or runscribe is accurate pace/distance both inside and outside, regardless of tree cover. Especially because treadmills are horribly inaccurate and any gps besides the polar v800 is barely better. I've never had accurate pace/distance on an indoor track before and never know if a treadmill is right or not.

Great review. I got one about a year ago and recently started using it religiously. Two questions, do you find using power more effective than using pace and heart rate together. Second, do you find a big difference in power measurement on the treadmill vs road? Do you produce less power on the treadmill at the same speed as out on the road
    Thanks Taren!

Not only good for data Junkies. You have a very accurate instant pace and step frequency, that a GPS watch can't provide reliably all the time. When I start a 10km run, my Fenix 6 needs nearly 5-10 seconds to give the run pace. I want to know instantly if I start too fast. It's just an example.
For Trail running, it helps a lot, not to be burned uphill, or not to be too slow downhill.
    A nice tool 🔧

Great device, with more features than the Garmin footpod; but the exchange rate has probably flattened the Aussie market for stryd, at $199.99 USD becomes approx. $270.00 AUD - ouch.

Great timing for me! I've been eyeing this one off for a while, and have been very uncertain of whether it is worth it. Your video has definitely helped me decide...
    A couple of questions though!!
Does this integrate with the Garmin watches at all - or is it a standalone measure?
Also also (partly connected with my previous question), can it be used on an outdoor run when not carrying a phone (and only a Garmin watch)? Or does this require connection to a phone / device other than Garmin watch?

  • @HealthySGRetiree

If my Stryd is connected to my Garmin (for indoor run), could I still connect it to my Zwift while running on treadmill?
I just couldn't connect to the Zwift with Stryd once I am connected to indoor running with Garmin.
    Any advice?

I would be very interested in a comparison to the HRM-Tari. I use the HRM-TRI with power data a while now but it seems to put out a wide range of power numbers at steady pace. So I'm not sure how to use it.

You could just have the Zwift stay on Zwift and not push it anywhere or delete the extra activity on whatever app it pushed to. On Garmin connect I delete all Zwift activities but I let Zwift push to Strava because the maps are better of watopia

3 MONTHS...and it's already that beat up...for $199?? My 30 buck Milestone looks pristine after a year of hard word, outdoors and on zwift...bad weather, cold weather, rain. Really disappointing to see a $200 running pod wear faster than a pair of shoes.

Matthew Smith I have got mine for even longer and mine looks perfectly good! I have used a MilestonePod and i sadly have to say that the distance is way off and just rubbish, whereas my Stryd pod is spot on. I have to agree though that the cost of a Stryd Pod is extraordinary...
