    I've been running with the Stryd for about 6 months and I haven't had any connectivity issues at all. It's been soaked in the rain and worn in cold, dry temps around the upper teens, so nothing like you've put it through. I still have not done any power specific training, but the data it's giving me now is pretty useful though honestly I don't quite understand it all yet!

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 лет назад

      good to know that you've been able to soak it without issues.
      what do you think about the distance and pace numbers it's giving you?

    • @gabegd23
      @gabegd23 5 лет назад

      Also, are you using the Powercenter web page or just the app? I think some of the metrics you are looking for are only available on the website.

      @@kofuzi It's shorting me a little on pace and distance, but I'd rather be going faster than I think I am than the opposite. When I ran a half marathon with it, I got 12.9 miles so it's not a massive difference. I never have bothered to calibrate it on a track, but I may do that at some point.

      Mine was reading 4% over on distance. Using the auto calibration feature of my watch has sorted this out. I now find it very useful for instant pace.

    I've been running with Stryd for over a year now. I've never had any connectivity issues with ANT+ on Garmin watch or Bluetooth to my phone. The accuracy is incredible for my Stryd. My wife's Stryd is a bit more off, though. But, we calibrate it on the watch. So far, I think it's the best running tool out there next to a HRM.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 лет назад +1

      i still get regular connectivity issues, but i think in the overall, it gives me less uncertainty than gps. in the city, i regularly run under bridges or other overpasses where GPS just wouldn't work.

    Stryd works really well with my Garmin FR935 and got all the Stryd data running indoor. Not with other platforms (iSmoothRun, Suunto Ambit3 Peak) when running on a treadmill. I bought it mainly because it would help prevent bonking in Full marathon and beyond.

    • @kofuzi

    Wow, Chicago is super cold! Once you get down to below 10F, lithium ion batteries tend to fail. Anyway, I’ve been using the Stryd and power-based training for a year; it was helpful in getting my first Boston qualifier. I like how it helps to regulate my effort on hills, the start of races, etc. when I tend to over-do things a bit. I’ve been documenting all my experiences as well as sharing a bunch of truly 🤓 nerdy tests on my channel.

    The accuracy of my Stryd is incredible. Distance measured is always the same over an identical run. When I used to rely on gps, distance and pace were all over the place. On my Fenix 5, which has ant + issues, I have to wear my watch on the inside of my wrist, so it has line of sight with the stryd on the opposite foot. With the watch worn normally, I’d have connection drop outs. This is a Garmin issue though. During the summer I calibrated mine at a track. Ended up being 1.1% out. As the stryd relies on precise accelerometers, running through snow will vary the force which is measured. That I assume is why your measurements have issues.

    Interesting to hear your first impressions. As it happens, I've just completed a review of Stryd - I didn't have any problems losing connection to the pod. But I did find similar issues with odd GPS traces when Stryd uses the phone for GPS. I got far better results when I severed the connection with my phone - using GPS off the AW itself.
    It also looks like you're running fairly flat courses - I think it has more value for hilly courses or trail runs, where pace itself is not so useful.
    When the weather gets better, I'd recommend doing a critical power test - it does make the power number more meaningful.

    • @kofuzi

      I was contacted by stryd after this video. It was very nice to have them reach out with some additional insights. They confirmed that some connection issues may arise when both the Apple Watch and your phone have their Bluetooth on. They recommended turning Bluetooth off on the phone.

    Probably very good outside in the real world. Mine was very off on a treadmill even though advertised not required and even recommended not to calibrate. My use is only for a treadmill for zwift so I sent it back. A garmin footpod is adequate for this task.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 лет назад

      i'd agree with that. i think there are cheaper footpods one could get if you only need it for zwift

  • @topoisomerace
    @topoisomerace 5 лет назад

    I use Stryd. It is inconsistent for me. The same effort on a treadmill vs. outside (based on heart rate and perceived exertion) yields noticeably different results. Different shoes can also produce different results. And the biggest source of deviation seems to be pace. When I run slowly or really quickly, the measurements deviate from what I can measure via GPS or on a map. When I run at HM pace, it is most accurate.
    In short, while Stryd is very consistent when you keep pace, shoes, and surface constant, I bought it because I rarely have the luxury of keeping every variable consistent.
    The one thing I do love, though, is how quickly the pace adjusts. This is a big improvement over GPS. I do also really like the vertical oscillation, cadence, and power tracking because I love analyzing my running data. But none of it has convinced me to manage my training and racing by anything other than pace, distance, and heart rate.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 лет назад

      Isn't the whole point of it to let you know when your perceived efforts deceive you? So I'm not sure that your treadmill vs road anecdotal experience really dissuades but rather reaffirms.
      Also, can you verify that your gps tracings are accurate? I run in urban areas where gps is frequently inaccurate, so stryd being different than gps is a strength not a weakness.
      But maybe you have a great internal clock and your gps is rock solid, in which case, I think your points are quite valid. Also, I have other issues with stryd, so I'm not saying it's perfect.

    • @topoisomerace
      @topoisomerace 5 лет назад

      @@kofuzi I wanted it to be my one reliable data point, but it hasn't turned out that way. When Stryd tells me that my 20 minute threshold run on a treadmill with an average heart rate of 170 is the same power output as a 20 minute easy-ish jog outside with an average heart rate below 150 then I know something is off with the calibration. It's not a bad device, but it isn't the rock-solid definitive analytical tool that I was hoping it would be.

    I've had my stryd for approx. a year. The powercenter is nice, especially on the improve tab for recommendations and trends. I like the trends to keep me motivated. I checked on a track and it was spot on for me from a distance perspective. I have set my watch to use it for pace and distance (vs. the GPS). The accuracy can be annoying as it tells me I usually over run during races (so I have to try to adjust). Beyond the stryd app for garmin and data fields, there is also datarun, which can display up to 7 fields on one screen, including power (need to purchase). I don't run by power only, but it is another data point. Also, I use smashrun.com, which leverages the power data so I can see in the app, which I find more informative than the power center when looking at the run in some usecases. I don't believe strava supports yet.

      One other note, be sure to check styd compatibility in regards to using gps and stryd for pace/distance at the same time in regards to a watch. Not all watches support this (my Garmin 935 does). My vivoactive HR does not.

      @@kofuzi One other thought on accuracy, I assuming you synced your weight and height to the stryd. I received a replacement stryd recently and forgot to update this information, which resulted in some really high values (like I have never hit those power values in the past). I have the garmin footpod and the stryd. The stryd is more accurate out of the box. You can manually or automatically calibrate the garmin to increase accuracy (like stryd), but potentially not as accurate even after calibration (I haven't tried a side-by-side to verify). Out of the box it was a bit off. It doesn't have all the data as the stryd (i.e., distance and cadence only). That said, it is much cheaper if you are looking only for something to track distance and cadence more accurately indoors. I don't use mine anymore after I got the stryd.

  • @h18p

    Cold? You should try South Dakota. I've already done a number of runs in below zero temps. :) I've had a Stryd for over a year now and it is MUCH more accurate than the speed reading you'll get from a watch (for reference, I have a Forerunner 935). Also, you will need to have an accurate height/weight setting and at some point perform the 3/9 minute test to determine your threshold power. Once you have that, the data is very meaningful and you can train in power zones. The Styrd/935 combo has been rock solid with zero drops or gaps.
