  • I took my Stryd Wind to my local track with a measuring wheel and did some number crunching.
    Some people will argue that the Stryd footpod does not need calibrating. Others say that many running tracks are incorrectly measured.
    I took time to measure my local track at two points across lane one. Then walked and ran with the Stryd footpod to see what it came up with.
    I did a similar test over 10k using ONLY ANT+ on two watches • Stryd Wind vs Old Stry...

    STRYD make it very clear in their Garmin watch setup instructions that you are to setup the STRYD via ANT+ and NOT via BT. The Garmin will detect 2 STRYD footbpods (one ANT+ and one BT). You need to make sure when the Garmin detects both connections from the STRYD (BT and ANT+) that you set that status to OFF for the BT one and then go into the ANT+ settings to complete the setup (SPEED-ALWAYS, DISTANCE-ALWAYS, CAL FACTOR-DISABLE, SET VALUE-100.0)

      I think that was because in the past you will not get distance/pace info via Bluetooth with Garmin watches. I cannot think of any logical reason why you will not get the same info via Bluetooth or ANT+, unless there is something wrong with Stryd at the software level and I don't think there is.

    I use the Stryd wind for both indoors, on Zwift, and out. The speed does jump around a bit so I think there is more value in testing over a longer distance as I have found it evens out very well. I have tested it (uncalibrated) over 14k against the GPS on my Garmin and there was only a difference of 20m.

    I haven't used my STRYD pod to measure distance or speed, but using it as a power meter works really well for me, especially in longer races.

    The difference in distance reporting is interesting. I have a non-wind Stryd which I've been using with a Suunto Spartan watch (via BLE, auto calibration turned off) where it gives me distance reports that I think are pretty accurate. Recently switched to a Coros Vertix, where I have to pair Stryd via ANT+, and suddenly I need to apply a calibration factor of 2.7% to get correct distance reports. I did one run where the footpod was simultaneously talking to the Suunto and the Coros and got the same result as you: two different distance readings for the very same run, with ANT+ reporting shorter than BLE.

    I remember owning the very first Polar foot pod, the early one was the size (and shape) of a mouse. The data was remarkably accurate when tested on a 400m track, the data you seem to be getting is rather concerning. Most foot pod users seem to benefit when using foot pods in areas where buildings or trees will effect the GPS. Personally, I'll use my current Garmin 45 in wide open areas for my important speed paced training sessions. If I have an easy long run I might run through the forest where precision is not so important. I'm not sold on Stryd's power output feature. Thanks for the review.

    Good test, I using STRYD footpod for years, running in city, GPS always unreliable,
    I think you should continues run instead of pause and start in each 400 minutes, the more you run, the accuracy it is.
    I suppose there is a stationary miscounting in the starting several second, after that, everything is fine.
    That my feeling, for your reference.

    Another annoying thing with Stryd PM is every time I stop at a stop light it takes a few seconds to connect which actually adds distance. So runs where I hit the lights green are generally shorter. But I love the fact that it is not affected by disconnects from satellites on trail runs. Great for power

    This is known phenomenon, if you wear garmin on your right wrist - it will measure significantly longer distance on track, sometimes up to 10% more (if watch setting are left wrist). To compare it fairly you have to wear both watches on the left wrist.

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  Год назад

      Remember distance calculation was from the Stryd footpod, not from the Watch. So it makes no difference which wrist the watch is on. But it makes a difference which foot the pod is on.

    I’m willing to bet you cannot connect the pod to two different watches at the same time. Therefore the distance differences that are being seen is the watch that is further off is actually reading from GPS. With they roughly 10m accuracy of consumer GPS signals that explains why the distance increased while being stopped. If you think for example a pair of headphones, they may have been paired with your computer and your phone but if you try to play something on both at the same time only one comes through. I’m assuming same with the Stryd. The Fenix 6 was the primary, then when the Fenix 5 was switched to Ant+ that became the primary. Then the “non-primary” defaulted to GPS.

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  3 года назад +4

      No it doesn’t work like that. Bluetooth and ANT+ work entirely separately from each other. It is perfectly possible to connect one pod to two different devices and many people do this on a regular basis. Stryd informed that for some reason Stryd Bluetooth does not play well with Garmin watches which is why they always recommend connecting the Footpod by ANT+ on Garmin watches. Oddly Bluetooth works perfectly well on other brands of watch and on Zwift.
      Your example with headphones is using Bluetooth for both. In this case I was using Bluetooth for one watch and ANT+ for the other watch. Neither watch was using GPS at any stage.

    Honestly even though I'm sad to keep my stryd pod in the box when I'm running outside I reach a point where I feel that Pace and Power are a different way to express the same thing so I prefer to use GPS because it is more accurate.
    When I do 12 rep of 400 mt or 6 rep of 1.6 km I have no time to check the device to think about power or Pace...I just read the time to complete 400 mt or the split Pace during 1.6 km...no matter what, I try my best and the fact I can analyze what I have done in Power does not change my future performance, I just give a different name to my ability or my lack of ability. :D

    I've used a couple stryds for distance/pace for about 5 years. Have not checked calibration as accurately as you have. Mine is mated to a Polar Vantage M2 watch. I usually walk or run the same 13.1 mile course on weekends. I have noticed that its consistancy (1 mile marks and finish) is super accurate. Usually will hit mile 13.1 within a 10-20 yard variance. The only problem I have is the difference between running a Half vs power walking a Half. I have to walk about .3 mile further to achieve 13.1 miles vs the 13.1 running distance. This kinda coincides with what you were getting on one of the watches when you walked vs ran. I guess this is due to the cadence difference between running and walking. Speed doesn't seem to affect the accuracy much. May need to get an extra stryd and custom calibrate just for walking (The running distance seems to be the most accurate with certified race courses).

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  Год назад

      Yes, I have found the accuracy of the Stryd is influenced by your cadence and stride length, regardless of speed. I probably won't be buying the brand new version though.

    I know I'm a year late to this party, and someone else (including you) may have mentioned this somewhere here in the comments, but 0.40 km does not necessarily equal 400 meters. For example, 403 meters will display as 0.40 km. There is likely some measuring and reporting error in there. Was/Is it not possible to change the watch's reporting from km to meters? Not complaining, just curious. Also, the increase in distance while you are standing still is most likely cause by the dynamic GPS measurement trying to get a good read on your location. I appreciate your taking the time for the tests.

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  Год назад +1

      Haha yes 0.40 is definitely not necessarily 400m. It could be 401 or 409 definitely aware of that. The only way to change to metres is to use Track mode but that still rounds up to the nearest 5 meters I think. I use track mode in a later video about Stryd. There adding odd distance at the end was a Bluetooth issue. Apparently Stryd and specifically Garmin watches do not play well together. I was informed of this after I made this video. So I never connected Stryd to my watches using Bluetooth again. Never had that issue since.

    Hi, thanks for your video. It is in my opinion a very clever way to test Stryd pod and probably one of the most honest review about this device. I purchased Stryd willing to use it with my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus and I decided to not use it anymore. The reason is the lack of calibration. If Stryd cannot read correctly the distance all the Data are compromised...Pace, Cadence, Power could be interesting but only if Stryd was accurate. In my experience it is not.
    Garmin GPS it is not 100% accurate either but still way better.

Now I use Stryd for treadmill... I do it because fenix 5 Plus is not capable to read properly your speed on a treadmill. Consistency and instant pace. A foot pod cannot be confused by bridges or dense tree cover. The instanc pace is *way* more stable then any GPS watch I've ever seen. You also get a power reading, which is mostly a elevation/grade adjusted pace that you can use to pace races. The latter isn't that important to me since I live in a pretty flat area.
      For easy runs it's definitely not worth it, but I absolutely love it for pacing track workouts and races.
