I think the FN scar is such a great innovative design in so many ways, I just wish they would have addressed a few more issues with the manual of arms such as: the bolt catch/release not being ambidextrous (would be nice if they had something similar to the ACR's bolt catch), the short fore-end/handguard (would prefer something longer, possibly in keymod), maybe an adjustable gas system, make it compatible with plentiful magazines(like the dpms AR10 mags), and a non-reciprocating charging handle. If the rifle had those options I may actually consider owning a rifle in the less than affordable 7.62x51mm caliber.

The scar parts are so damn expensive. I was willing to spend the 3 grand on one until I saw barrels in the 1000+ range. What a nightmare to service that weapon.
BAR was intended as a squad automatic weapon, not a battle rifle. That's why it has a heavy barrel. The SCAR 17 is a battle rifle, not intended for sustained automatic fire. That's the difference.
You're such a cool and enlightening person man. And I'm not even into guns but you make me realize the history significance and patriotism behind guns u know not to mention the way he makes u get intune with each gun and their differences and how they relate. Wish ur son was the same way but ion like his vibe and if I ever own s gunI will probably stop having one after he's done making these vlogs unless I find someone as knowledgeable and down to earth as him because you're the most American person I know
Well, it's in some ways apples-to-oranges: the FN Mk17 was designed as a heavy assault rifle, while the BAR is an Infantry Automatic Rifle: a hybrid combat rifle/light machine gun. As a result, it's built to sustain high volumes of Fire for gunnery work, while retaining some semblance of precision. The Mk17, isn't quite built-up for heavy, prolonged stress.
Borrowing bar 1918 is my favorite gun and I love it I like his voice and everything salute to the developer and inventer of this badass gun if I'm in World War i use definitely this gun
I love my SCAR 17s. Best battle rifle I have ever handled, and I have handled a lot! The BAR was a great weapon in its time, and it is a pretty good war club if you run out of ammo and are strong enough to swing it... LOL If you hate the SCAR, its probably because you have never fired a SCAR... They are light, accurate, have an OK trigger, good sights and surprisingly low recoil for a 7.62 NATO round. I can fire my SCAR at a 6" plate at 300+ yards at a rate of 3 to 4 rounds a second and hit the plate every time. Almost no muzzle rise. The muzzle break makes the weapon loud, you can feel the thump if you are standing next to someone firing it. Yes, it kind of looks like a pregnant guppy, but if the SHTF, that is the rifle I will have in my hands. You can really reach out and touch someone, in the next zip code if necessary, with the SCAR. I just don't know what else you could want in a combat rifle...
The book helmet for a pillow by Robert Lackie - an amazing book about the marines in the pacific. Describes how the marines modified the BAR for combat "if it could be taken off it was". Packs were used for shooting or logs in more static times. It was more DMR then people think because of the sights and trigger the book talks about being able to burst 2 or 3 rounds with it accurate.
The fact that we can find an 100 year old antique box of 9mm, .45 , 50bmg, 22LR... etc and have it chamber perfectly in a brand new 2014 model gun says that we have done next to nothing in the last 100 years. Not sure if that is good or bad...
What do you even mean? Of course many ammo cartridges have remained the same over time. They work well and they're popular. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
TheGreatCrusader this video was about comparing ~100years of improvements. look back another 100 years... that is 100 +100 = 200... there was a LOT of INNOVATION. Smokeless powder, primers, self contained cartridges, automatic fire, proper rifling... actually nevermind... :(
Son of a Zombie Well then you could have said, "Compare the last 100 years of advancement to the 100 years previous to that." There might not have been as much development in the ammunition cartridge field, and the actions of firearms might be relatively the same, but the technology involved in manufacturing, recoil compensation, modularity, ergonomics, etc. has come quite far, and we owe these advancements to having such stable actions and designs from 100 years ago. It wasn't broken, so they didn't have to fix it, allowing the modern designers to focus on other aspects of shooting.
You know it’s always interesting to me when I see a scar. Because I’m a pretty avid gamer and every game I’ve ever played always makes the scar seem like a heavier gun that it actually is
Video games are so unrealistic when it comes to firearms. I'd like to know why they think two different rifles with the same barrel length and the same caliber do different amounts of damage. Also, just calling something a "sniper" rifle makes it 5 times deadlier. Don't get me wrong, I like video games and it's good that they're getting more people interested in firearms. A new gun owner and a supporter of gun rights is always good, irrespective of how they came to be firearms fans.
The B.A.R. was my grandpas rifle in WW2 at Battle of the Bulge. Cant wait to own on of these myself down the road, just didn't realize the heafty-ness. He spoke very little about it, but, he told me he had a bi-pod stationed uphill in foxholes and would just open fire downwards on the enemy, this is a mans man rifle.
Listen to the sound both guns make when you drop them on the table. The BAR sounds like quality, steel, the thud of awesome workmanship. The SCAR sounds like any other water gun you would toss down. Plastic. I'm old school, I'll admit it, I like a steel gun that just feels good when you pick it up. But, I to have taken advantage of the "plastic" firearms, the weight factor, the reliability, just like everybody else. But, I'll have to say, picking up an old S&W .357 Magnum revolver feels like coming home.
Really enjoyed that comparison, thanks! I guess one interesting fact about your choice of BAR vs FN SCAR is the trivia regarding the J. M. Browning/FN connection. Browning, of course, eventually ended up working for the Belgian company.
I'd really hope to see the guns you've mentioned, mainly because there's almost no information out there about these historical fascinating firearms. Oh, and by the way, I don't think Hickok45 speaks russian ;)
Both are great guns but the Scar is just a step over in pure beauty. First heard of it while playing STALKER Call of Chernobyl and wanted to learn more about. Really cool weapon.
Another great one from hickok45. I love my BAR someday I hope to own a SCAR when im in a free state. Hickok45 have a great 4th of July and yes life is certainly good in this great country of ours.
Using the B.A.R. as a support light machine gun role in WWII makes me wonder why someone didn't try to make a shortened, lighter, cheaper version, with perhaps a smaller cartridge for standard issue use instead of the m1 garand before the war. Especially since the B.A.R. had been in production since the 20's.
Imagine your scared to death, running for your life on Omaha beach in Normandy trying to avoid heavy machine gun fire (from mg42's mind you) while lugging a BAR around....That truly was america's greatest generation.
I'd have to agree with you. In my opinion having a flamethrower strapped to your back would be worse for a number reasons. The weight, and the possibility of it blowing up being the top 2 lol
In military loadings, I don't think there's much difference between the .30-06 and the .308. The .30-06 CAN be loaded up hotter than the .308, I believe, due to the larger case capacity, which make sit still very popular for hunting and such.
That would be a good point if you weren't dead wrong. The 100 fps difference is only really a factor at extreme ranges. A .308 has slightly more bullet drop at a slightly closer difference and thats about it.
Zach how I'm I dead wrong? I stated the 100fps is negligible in most cases. You do know what negligible means right? Bottom line is Hickok was very accurate when he stated the 308 and 30-06 are very similar ballistically for most military loadings. I was merely agreeing with him. I'm not sure what your argument is because you are saying pretty much the same thing.
It helps being 6'8" when quick firing a 308 NATO haha! You have a bit of an easier time than me at 5' 7" even though I'm solid like an oak stump. ;) great video! Mick!
This might have been eight years ago but I am just seeing this. As a military rifle fanatic, both of these rifles are my crack cocaine. Never mind the smoking pots. These rifles are mega maga history. Thanks to Mr.Hickok and his son for bringing both of these legends to us and showing us what absolute quality of firearms manufacture in firearms looks like. Freedom exists because free men carry , fire and maintain rifles like these.
I wish someone could get their hands on one of those Polish BARs. Those are absolutely badass. Really every military that latched on to the BAR upgraded it waaaaaaaay more than the US did. Pistol grips, higher capacity, decent tripods, etc.
As a fellow SCAR 17s owner, I was thinking the same thing while watching your initial BAR video. Of course, the BAR is legendary, and I would love to own one someday. But I wouldn't trade the SCAR for it. The muzzle brake is a big part of the volume you were complaining about, but it also is a big part of the recoil reduction you were praising. You should try taking it off and shooting it with nothing, just to see how much recoil reduction it accounts for, before spending money on something to replace it. The volume is pretty obnoxious with it, but the recoil is noticeably more pronounced without it.
Great video again! You're my favorite You Tuber. Nice to see a video on the OOW 1918A3. I've owned one for over 10 years, shoot in in Military Matches. Love it! FYI. You remove the flash hider to remove the bipod. Makes the old warhorse 3# lighter.

BAR was intended as a squad automatic weapon, not a battle rifle. That's why it has a heavy barrel. The SCAR 17 is a battle rifle, not intended for sustained automatic fire. That's the difference.
Those weapons sure are firing pretty fast..
Damn now I want a BAR
The BAR is like my favorite gun. Good luck on future videos keep having fun and I’ll keep watching you
Should do a B.A.R vs Bren Gun
And the fact that there is a 500+ foot per second difference between them
Borrowing bar 1918 is my favorite gun and I love it I like his voice and everything salute to the developer and inventer of this badass gun if I'm in World War i use definitely this gun
“A REALL MAN.. could carry” 😂
The SCAR 17 is one of the most ridiculously loud things I've ever heard being shot for its size, and I F****ING LOVE IT.
5:29 "Boom Boom, Boom Boom" haha love it!
this guy got homeland security flyin by in all the best videos
I noticed that too. Usually after full auto something there's an aircraft flying by.
Fantastic video Hickok thanks.
From what I know, the BAR has been developed into a new modern model that is the HCAR. Idk, I could be wrong though.
Is the SCAR 17 open bolt or closed?
I hit a 2" plate at 900 yards every time with my .22 lr at 10 rounds per second blindfolded and only using my left hand.
I can't believe they made the Golden Scar into a real thing!
Can see how technology evolved over time.
Interesting.
Not really. If you tried to fire a hundred year old 9mm with brand new +P+ ammunition, it would probably explode.
Mike2020mike2020 You missed the point. Besides, +p+ in a new gun that is also not rated for it would probably get the same result.
Son of a Zombie
Well then you could have said, "Compare the last 100 years of advancement to the 100 years previous to that." There might not have been as much development in the ammunition cartridge field, and the actions of firearms might be relatively the same, but the technology involved in manufacturing, recoil compensation, modularity, ergonomics, etc. has come quite far, and we owe these advancements to having such stable actions and designs from 100 years ago. It wasn't broken, so they didn't have to fix it, allowing the modern designers to focus on other aspects of shooting.
AWSOME, this is great to see, old school and new school. Both proven well.
@@thatguy22441 look at game called escape from tarkov it has very realistic guns compared to like call of duty
The B.A.R. was my grandpas rifle in WW2 at Battle of the Bulge.
Отличное видео! Будут обзоры на другие исторические винтовки - Каркано, Арисака, Лебель, МАС 36 ?
I'd really hope to see the guns you've mentioned, mainly because there's almost no information out there about these historical fascinating firearms.
Oh, and by the way, I don't think Hickok45 speaks russian ;)
Jeff Lebowski It would be great if Google translate it right C:
this is awesome you should do more old vs new gun reviews
I don't even need to watch..BAR is the answer for everything ;)
Both beautiful weapons.. Cant go wrong with either 1 imo
What if your wife asks where you were last night?
Yeah
And if you run outta ammo
Go ham on em and club em
Thanks Hickok, I love my SCAR 17. I use as my main home defense gun.
You should do this with an HCAR !
Both are great guns but the Scar is just a step over in pure beauty. First heard of it while playing STALKER Call of Chernobyl and wanted to learn more about. Really cool weapon.
Belgian Firepower! whoa makes me proud of my brave little country! ;) i guess you let us win just to thank us for the great firearms :)
Another great one from hickok45. I love my BAR someday I hope to own a SCAR when im in a free state. Hickok45 have a great 4th of July and yes life is certainly good in this great country of ours.
Perhaps a SCAR/HCAR comparison in the future? Probably a better comparison. (though I thoroughly enjoy your channel)
colmhain this is gonna be a done question, but what’s a hcar??
DeRailed Jr. Not dumb. Not many people know but it's basically a modernized bar
America's grandfather...
I think a good match up would be the BAR vs a select fire M14. Both hold 20 rounds and both are big heavy rifles. I'd love to see it!
The BAR look cooler, Clyde Barrow would agree.
Imagine your scared to death, running for your life on Omaha beach in Normandy trying to avoid heavy machine gun fire (from mg42's mind you) while lugging a BAR around....That truly was america's greatest generation.
adam briar my great grandfather had it worse than a BAR gunner...he lugged around a flamethrower for about a year before switching to light infantry
I'd have to agree with you. In my opinion having a flamethrower strapped to your back would be worse for a number reasons. The weight, and the possibility of it blowing up being the top 2 lol
the 308 compared to a 30/06, is about the same as comparing the 30/06 to a 300 win mag... difficult to make that bar look bad isn't it!
In military loadings, I don't think there's much difference between the .30-06 and the .308. The .30-06 CAN be loaded up hotter than the .308, I believe, due to the larger case capacity, which make sit still very popular for hunting and such.
Generally 100fps avg on many loads difference which is negligable in most cases ;)
308 vs 30-06 that is...you cannot compare the 300 win mag to the 30-06 at all. Look at load data.
Nice to see how much things have progressed. I'd also appreciate a field test of the Sig 716 Patrol vs. the SCAR.
It helps being 6'8" when quick firing a 308 NATO haha! You have a bit of an easier time than me at 5' 7" even though I'm solid like an oak stump. ;) great video! Mick!
5.7 as in FN.57 hmm or FN scar I can't be the only one need to make a joke on this
Your face in the BAR slowmo was the best!! Made my day anyway haha
If there would be gun in between these two it would be FN Fal.
Definitely
I guess one could say the FAL is almost like a carbine version of the BAR in terms of design (and yes I know the BAR is considered an MG)
+The Incredible Carrot with a different operating System and another role
+The Incredible Carrot it is considered an LMG, but I think it's really more of a battle rifle.
scarheavyfox A light machine gun is still a machine gun, just as a laptop is still a computer.
Look at that recoil kick on that big heavy bar
I want a SCAR so badly
I think you meant BAR
Just save up a few grand and it's yours✌🏾
This might have been eight years ago but I am just seeing this.
As a military rifle fanatic, both of these rifles are my crack cocaine.
Never mind the smoking pots.
These rifles are mega maga history.
Thanks to Mr.Hickok and his son for bringing both of these legends to us and showing us what absolute quality of firearms manufacture in firearms looks like.
Freedom exists because free men carry , fire and maintain rifles like these.
BAR ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL DAY.... just like my hero Clyde :)
I wish someone could get their hands on one of those Polish BARs. Those are absolutely badass. Really every military that latched on to the BAR upgraded it waaaaaaaay more than the US did. Pistol grips, higher capacity, decent tripods, etc.
He’s makes a scar look tiny
As a fellow SCAR 17s owner, I was thinking the same thing while watching your initial BAR video. Of course, the BAR is legendary, and I would love to own one someday. But I wouldn't trade the SCAR for it.
The muzzle brake is a big part of the volume you were complaining about, but it also is a big part of the recoil reduction you were praising. You should try taking it off and shooting it with nothing, just to see how much recoil reduction it accounts for, before spending money on something to replace it. The volume is pretty obnoxious with it, but the recoil is noticeably more pronounced without it.
5:30 5 year old me with my nerf guns.
Great video again! You're my favorite You Tuber. Nice to see a video on the OOW 1918A3. I've owned one for over 10 years, shoot in in Military Matches. Love it! FYI. You remove the flash hider to remove the bipod. Makes the old warhorse 3# lighter.
