I performed with Joe at the Calico bluegrass festival in 1980! we both played his double neck at the same time! the tune we played together was amos moses! Jammed with Merle as well on this song cannonball rag at McCabes in the 70s!
1954 is the year that THP (Town Hall Party) discovered the wonderful Collins Kids (Lorrie 12 & Larry 9). Joe Maphis taught young Larry how to professionally play the guitar, and I've come to really appreciate the incredible talent of this teen age Brother-Sister Rockabilly duo! Love THP and all the acts presented. Incredible music history. Country and Rockabilly on the same stage! Often while watching THP I wish I could just crawl thru the screen and go back to that time.
Almost unbelievably great musicians. They make it look easy. What talent, what tone with no fancy effects or gizmos. Two innovators. Thanks for posting.
Two of the greats. Chet patterned his style after Merle Travis and Joe Maphis was called King of the Strings. The first to play a double neck Mosrite guitar.
No way! I just totally thought that Joe Maphis was Merle Travis, because his smile is EXACTLY the same as Travis! I noticed the name was wrong on the guitar from what I thought! That smile is MAGIC! These 2 seem to be twins......
Would that there was no-frills, straight up talent like that today ! No fancy electronics, two guitars plugged straight into whatever and a boatload of talent from these two great pickers. The epitome of bad to the bone !
Merle was real good but nothing like Joe. You notice Joe does not go out there and blow him away and make him look bad, like how musicians try to act now. Real musicians like these guys, play the song, no ego tripping or all that nonsense, These kind of awesome players just make the song sound good, that is what it is about.
Different styles, but both great guitarists. I couldn't pick one over the other. Add Chet, Grady Martin, Hank Garland in that Era and you've got the Holy Grail of guitarists.

The 2 best guitar pickers in the history of guitar pickers bar none!
Priceless clip! Joe and Merle were true guitar pickers and entertainers. Thanks for posting.
That's pretty cool!! It don't get much better than Merle Travis and Joe Maphis!

Two great musicians. Two great friends.
Pickin' and a grinnin'! Two card-carrying guitar badasses.

Это ужасно, что я не слышал о них ни чего до недавнему времени. Браво!!!!!
So amazing. Fantastic cleans with very primitive electrics. Effortless and smooth.

absolute dynamite ! thank you for posting !
Legendary 🙏🙏🌹🇺🇸🇺🇸
God they were talented.
Many people think He played that on nylon string guitar, He picked up Jeane Sealys Epiphone steel string guitar and played the song on it.
Awesome!
Love the armrests.
Unreal .
Dang son that's talent..!!!!!
Wow incredible skill
Joe Maphis played lead guitar for Ricky Nelson early in his career before Ricky hired James Burton.
They also did the same schtick with Larry Collins who was about 8 or do then.....
Larry was about 13 on Ranch Party with his sister Lorrie. Tex Ritter was host. Larry had a double neck Mosrite like Joe's.
Happy 100th birthday Joe!
Fun!
Gibson vs Bigsby

So Joe Maphis can ''Travis pick' as well!
Joe was the only one who could match Merle note for note, and vice versa

Playing music is a cooperative activity.

Never saw Joe not fingerpicking Tennessee style...{ with flat pick }
Not sure if it's the suit or the cowboy that that doesn't belong on Maphis.
I was very confused after 2.46!

I came here because of John 5
That was un-real!
