I think that I'm going to make me a big plate of sausage and gravy and biscuits with some scrambled eggs and hashbrowns followed by a hot cup of coffee and a big ole glass of butter milk and listen to this again. Hehehehe
Joe is my great grandmother’s cousin. My grandmother sent me some of his music and told me about him. I’m so glad that there’s another guitarist in the family. I might make mistakes when I played and I used to play weddings corporates parties and go around playing some resorts and casino lounges (Losers Lounge in Lauphlin NV,, but I did get a naturally hi amount of facility hopefully from a mutual ancestor of me and joe.
On top of Maphis' guitar prowess, he is not afraid of a volume knob and really showcases the biting tone of the early Mosrite pickups. Even here, his guitar is about 10 years old, being one of the first Mosrites made. A smaller copy was made for a very young Larry Collins while both Maphis and Collins were on "Town Hall Party" out of Compton ( different world, then) during the 1950's.
A lot of guitarists seem to be in great pain while manhandling their instrument. Joe smiles and enjoy while playing impossibly complicated tunes without gimmicks and effect boxes and pedal to hide behind - which he doesn't need!
Yes, it's called hybrid picking. He could have used a thumb pick like Chet Atkins, but chose to to hold a straight pick between his thumb and forefinger in stead.
Jimmy Dean was an exceptional entertainer with emphasis on "Entertainer". He had a great voice and knew how to work a crowd. But what really stood out to me is that Jimmy always admired and featured the guitar pickers. He gave them the recognition they truly deserved as you see here with 'Joe Maphis'. One of the last performances I saw by Jimmy was on 'Church Street Station' and he featured the late guitar wiz 'Phil Baugh'. See here: ruclips.net/video/t98DG5tIL8Y/видео.html
John brought me here too. Joe definitely shreds. WOW

Speed was only one of the many skills at Joe's disposal. I can guarantee nobody, and I mean nobody, played as fast and clean as Joe Maphis...and no post or pre-production.
Even Roy Clark, one of the all time top instrumentalists himself, held Joe Maphis in awe.
04:17 - from standing still to 100MPH.....just-like-that!
And super clean playing too !

Joe maphis is the most underrated country picker everyone says chet Atkins I think Joe is way better
Well, Chet was a master of all styles which Joe wasn't, but he's best at what he was doing.
I watched Jimmy Dean on ABC TV when it was originally aired. I didn't see any of the Joe Maphis shows, and didn't hear of him until 2017!
No way! How can you be able to post if you're that old?
Disclaimer: I'm that old too. My dog is typing this for me.
“That ain’t nothin’ in the world but plain damn Fire” xD
Legend.
Joe was a Major influence in my early pickin days. Always a hero, and by all accounts, a damn decent guy.
Greatest Guitar Man ever!
You can see why Joe is a legend

Jason, Wish you could have come to our Joe Maphis 100th Birthday Celebration last month. It was held in Cumberland, MD. where he grew up.
This is great! Joe Maphis pickin' and Jimmy Dean singin'!
One of the best ever. Always thought that was a mandolin on top but that piccolo guitar is fucking genius
Wow! That is great technique. Fantastic find, thanks cowboy.
Joe plays bass, rhythm and melody simultanously like Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. A genuine one-man-band.

Joe's wife Rose Lee is a master musician as well.
A lot of guitarists seem to be in great pain while manhandling their instrument.

My wife's aunt dated Jimmy while in high school in Plainview TX.
Wow!! I'm amazed at Joe Maphis! I now have to do a serious study on this incredible guitarist!!
Born in Suffolk, Virginia and grew up in Cumberland, MD.
Excellent video of Joe's technique. So fast, so clean and so cool.
It's astounding how smooth and full his hybrid picking is, including on the Martin bone.
"Wings of Pegasus sent me. I'm speechless! Happy New Year!!!"

Ohh good Lordy!!
05:30 - Downward pick slanting........?
❤️🎶🎸
Love the concept of a double neck guitar and understand this guy is a technical legend, but man, who can listen to this as music??
Is Joe holding a pick as well as finger-picking?
..Yes.

First a Martin D28 then a Mosrite double neck.
Founder of the Bakersfield Mafia......
Lords of bakersfield
I own a Martin D-28 like that, but it doesn't sound quite like that.
