@29:00 The west also has some of the rare veda-vedic chanting done by Pune Brahmin. Apparently the pune brahmin was the only one who knew of this particular method and it got recorded and preserved!! Way to go. India-Indians don't deserve our forefathers/lineage. We are horrible, horrible....
@54:00 Even today, traditional vedanta teacher do not care for recording their pravachan because it is not just meant for lisening but meant to be listened in the presence of a LIVE guru. SO it is oral traditions and thats why it is called Shruti
This is what I call sidequest history. It's my favourite kind of history. The stakes are low. The implications are not severe, political or otherwise. The non statistical biases are often less. One gets to fully enjoy the process of research and documentation. There are no heavy chips on your shoulder. Thank you Vikram Sir for gifting this book to the world.
Vikram has a genius that most lack! His knowledge of Indian history has silenced pretenders like Tharoor. It is so refreshing to see his passion even in the history of music! Glad you gave up the ‘coolie’ job of the corporates. Hats off to you Vikram! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💐‼️
All the historical wrongs are hammed by the great trinity 🔱 J Sai Deepak - Dr. Anand Ranganathan - Vikram Sampath. Hope to do the podcast with these gems 💎 one day.
I have never heard or seen this side of Dr. Sampath. We usually see him talking about history and I always wondered about the rather strange Ph.D degree he held. I'm so glad this podcast explored the musical side of this down-to-earth man and his yet another amazing contributions to our Indian society. Thanks!
Wow! Didn't know Vikram Sampath ji has been contributing more than what we know on the public domain. It's great to see and hear from him about his work in this domain. Kudos to him 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Towards the last decade of the19th century Gohar Jan visited Jamnagar which was the capital of Nawanagar state in Saurashtra. The ruler at that time was one Vibha jam -Uncle of Ranjit Singh the cricketer and Raj gayak was one Aditya Ram, Gohar Jan had also some musical training under Aditya Ram. This matter was reported in Gujarat Samachar by a journalist Joravar Singh Jadav a few years back. This is for the information of Shri Vikram Sampat.
Thank you Vinamre for this podcast. Finally Vikram gets to speak about something other than Savarkar and other political historical figure. I wish you had spoken more because Vikram is such a great story teller.
Wonderful podcast. We need more like this because people generally get attracted towards the practical aspects of Indian classical music while the fact is that it has a history of its own.
This is a real eye openener. Thanks for this veru enlighting podcast . MR Vikram Sampat is a gift who keeps giving ... Thanks for your dedication to your passion sir 🙏
Thank you Mr. Sampat. In the early 20th century, singers, mostly courtesans, had to sit down and sing before and elite audience; once the singing was over, they had to say their name in full before they got up to go. Like “Gohar Jan Kalkatte Wali”
Today I discovered a new talent in this man. He has done phenomenal work. I can't imagine how much time and energy he dedicated to this project. My god, he is something else. 🤯🤯🤯
Salute to Vikram bhai for the great documentation effort. India has so much treasures of different kinds, but longitudinal documentation of those are largely missing. Performing arts are particularly neglected. Thanks for this beautiful vdo.
This man just blows me away with his immense knowledge and passion! He inspires me so so much it’s always a delight to hear his podcasts. His stories and research is so on point ❤
A enjoyable video. Thanks to the uploaded. The guest is erudite & eloquent. The host, despite slipping in some phrases of self-praise about his deep knowledge of music, hasn't heard an original recording of K L Saigal and feels that Lata Mangeshkar only became popular only from 1960.
Appreciate your efforts Vikram. Much needed historical information. It’s true that our history has been neglected. We have so many such things which are not there… I’ve had the opportunity to visit some of the great musicians’ places and these places are not even known to the neighbours… Or tried to visit some veena instrument makers in Thanjavur famous for the makers of world famous veena and even the localites couldn’t explain location. A society building was in pathetic condition. There are several other such things. We should work towards protecting and propagating our identities.
Are our Industrialists support him in his endeavours who are very generous to foreign universities which are blatantly anti Indian, other than our dear Mohandas Pai?
So fantastic listening to this. I read ‘ my name is Gauhar Jaan’ in 2014 and was mesmerised by the singer as well as the book, I had no idea it would turn out to be ‘the Vikram Sampath’ now! My apologies for not remembering the writer he was years ago! It’s a must read. 🙏🏾
He is not just a historian or just another historian, he probably welded his knowledge in rooms sitting with immense heat, giving bestselling book, craving new paths, unloading new history, fixing old history. Vikram Sampath doesn't need to be known by what he did but who he is.
You can play a 78 rpm record / platter / disc 20:19 on a record player which has setting for speeds with regular stylus Not a big deal as you make it. Taken over by Goenka group EMI now Saregama Lot of BS with regard to technology A master disc is created on a metal platter then the the shellac is pressed The master disc has inverted image so that the shellac has the pitted grove.
We cannot change our past. We can not change the fact that people act in a certain way. We can not change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
Very interesting...btw, Gauhar Jan, India's first music diva, was born in a Jewish family...you can research...✌️...a well known theatre production on her bio has been presented in the Indian metros sm years back...
If a copyright has a validity of 60 years from date of publication, how sa re ga ma claims copy right of all music of hmv, Columbia etc records of pre 1964 ? Can. Shri Dr Vikram Sampat clarify?

@discat: Your job is to ask relevant questions. Not add your own "knowledge" and show off "I know it too" attitude, which is irrelevant for audience.
Quite an eye opener 👍

Brilliant
Vikram and the interviewer are at different wavelengths. The guy does not know what questions to ask to maintain the flow of research of Vikram
tHIS GUY DOES NOT HAVE THE LEAST knowledge about Indian music. His accent and his conversation completely reeks of western thoughts and indoctrination
I have few old gramaphone records and even old cassette with me.
Fantastic Conversation 👌
Is he related to Sunil Sampath?
Music history must be preserved 😮😮
Please invite Randeep Hooda for a podcast.🧐🙏🙏👍
