- This appears to be a common problem with Lexus IS and GS models of this vintage (~2006-2013 model years). The screen may not respond to touch either in specific parts of the screen or the entire surface.
You need to get the screen out, and then chip away at the glass where the ribbon cable enters, carefully avoiding cutting deep into the circuit. Shave off a layer of the circuit line so it's a nice shiny gold. Then "draw" the circuit with the pen and let it dry.
Sorry the video doesnt show all of the steps to remove the screen. It was a learning process for me and recording the whole thing while I struggled to get it open would just be boring to watch.
Main goal is to separate the navigation section from the tape deck/CD section. Then fold the bezel open from the navigation. There are 6 screws I believe on both sides of the bezel that also need to be removed.
A few things about this repair. 1) This fixes a screen that is lit but is not responsive when you touch the screen to select something on the screen. 2) This does not fix a black screen that does not light up. 3) I tried repairing the digitizer using the same ink pen he uses (Circuit Writer) for $29.44 off of Amazon. This did NOT work for me. I let it dry for several hours, even over night. I tried it 3 times. It appeared to not have any conductivity (I do not know why). 4) A much better solution is to buy a digitizer screen and replace it. I bought a $39 digitizer (high quality) however they have lots of cheaper ones around $30 (but these appear to have a rainbow). BTW... remove the plastic protection on both sides of the digitizer glass before installing (this may reduce or eliminate the rainbow effect. Replacing the digitizer screen is a more sure fired way to fix a problem where the screen is lit but it is not responsive to the touch.
Hi, can you send me the link to get the high quality digitizer . Thanks
Yea just replaced mine and the touch response still doesn’t workn
i know this video is old but what happen with the ink and procedure ?? just a few pictures ??
Thank you for this video, although some steps were confusing, I combined what I saw here with other videos and it gives me all the details I needed for my 08 gs460. Good stuff
You're welcome! I struggled to get the radio open and couldn't film the whole process. Glad it worked out for you!
@@ez12a Thank you for the video. I had my digitizer replaced but the display isn't bright like it was before. It's kind of dim but works well. Is there some type of film that is supposed to be peeled off or no. Please help.
@@ELCR73 Question. Does it look kinda rainbow like? When you move your head around. Cause I ended up replacing my digitizer and there was a useless polarized film on top of digitizer that I had to peel off and toss away. It was absolutely trash and I thought the digitizer sucked before I did this.
Basically tore apart radio again and peeled off that top layer. If you're seeing that rainbow, its probably there. Better yet, if you have any polarized sunglasses and it turns the screen black when you look at screen while it is on, there's the answer. This was the exact case for me.
@@Surveillance- Yes the screen has a rainbow look to it. I thought of taking a razor blade and run it along the edges to see if I could peel off the film without having to break everything down again. Thanks for the reply.
@@ELCR73 no problem. That was my first move too, but the film was surprisingly very thick, so it didn't work.
How u take the pastic from the front off
Ink to penetrate and dry am I missing something????? Ok ok ok I did miss it BUT YOU COMPLETELY MISSED SHOWING US HOW TO SCRATCH THE GLAS AND USE THE PEN….!!!!!!
4:03 - damnit, Jim, why can't you get a 3rd hand and use it???
🤣🤣🤣
After I replace the digitizer the touch screen is working but greeted by a blackout screen, any idea how to fix it
Did you ever figure out the issue
@@hammy316 there’s a layer you must remove
@@hammy316 just be super gentle and take your time
I am not sure the touch screen was the problem. I replaced the touch screen, power supply board, and the other circuit board, and it finally worked for $450.
Where can purchase the conductive ink pen?
What is the thing that’s broken called? The digitizer?
Yep. The cable attached to the digitizer is the failure point. New digitizers you buy have the cable attached.
ez|2a could you link me? I can’t see my to find it
amzn.to/2GsXAc1 (I have not tried this personally, but this is an example that may fit)
So basically the malfunction is the ribbon connector on the screen can I solder the connector
I would like to see the repair on a 2001 lexus rx 300
Im missing my navy blue wire and how the hell do I plug in an amp into this thing
Kudos for the Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard about - Parlandealey Vanish Ringworm Process (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a great exclusive product for revealing how to repair your vehicle without the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cousin after many years got amazing success with it.
My touchscreen works but on main screen only... can't change the options on any of other screens. The voice commands still work. But ac is stuck on... and the tolls are all blocked , oh and bluetooth , can't connect my phone. Again on main screen , shows where I am , I can use the touchscreen to navigate around , but nothing else 🤦♂️. Any thoughts from anyone? Thanks in advance
Where did you buy the replacement screen?
Hey Katie, no replacement screen was purchased. This repairs the ribbon cable that connects the digitizer to the system
@@ez12a okay thanks. I purchased a screen with ribbon attached. Hoping I can fix it myself 😳🤞🏼
I wonder if this will work on my 01 gs430 screen, it wont let me press nothing on the screen but its on?
The touch digitizer is separate from the screen. It's basically just a layer between you touching it, and the screen itself. It's a 30 dollar piece that you must replace. I would recommend repairing a malfunctioned part, just replace it for 30 bucks
if my screen is cracked do i just have to replace digitizer
You can remove the screen and try removing the digitizer to see if the screen itself is cracked. If not, yea then you should be able to just replace the cracked digitizer.
Do you know someone in North Carolina that can fix this?
why didn't you explain that the actual problem was. I have no idea why I need the ink.
DxV04 the circuits break due to age/heat/cold. The ink repairs the connections.
@@ez12a ok thank you very much!
God I wish I could do this my touchscreen isn’t responding
Please do not attempt to repair the digitizer in this fashion. It is a temporary fix at best and will require being repaired correctly later on. Most shops will charge more for having to repair a product that someone has attempted to repair before incorrectly. Digitizers are available for these units at a fraction of the cost of replacing the unit at a Lexus dealer. More than 80% of these repairs fail again in the first 24 hours. Conductive ink pens are meant for experimentation, not for permanent repairs.
Those shops are not honest then. Replacement digitizers come with a cable, so any repair done like the video would be totally reversible. Unless DIYers break anything else and try to hide it, the shop should have no problems doing the repair at their normal rate.
The repair shown in this video was performed on Jan 7, 2017 and was working when I sold the car late february, 2018. It has worked through two SoCal winters and a summer. If done correctly, this is a low cost repair that will not risk damaging the display, only the replaceable digitizer. Your 80% statistic is unfounded.
There is also a risk of damaging the display when replacing the digitizer. Or having an improperly installed digitizer create moire effect when viewing the screen. Or buying an inferior digitizer that does not perform like the factory digitizer. In my opinion, the conductive ink method is far less risky, and you retain OEM performance and picture quality.
Conductive ink pens are marketed for repairing damaged traces, which we are doing in this video.
It's not a matter of honesty-it's a matter of extra labor to correct someone's mistakes. Usually when someone unfamiliar with a product attempts a repair, screws are left out, flexible film cables are not seated properly or are broken from mishandling, etc. All of these things cause a bench technician to have to back up and troubleshoot the original problem as well as problems caused by improper servicing which takes more time and a lot of it. Using the conductive ink is a workaround; not proper servicing. The correct digitizer is available to the public and to try and "get by" with the conductive ink is just lazy and sloppy. No offense meant; it's just not a good idea.
Breaking things unrelated to the repair is a risk DIYers take, and they often pay more for professionals to repair damage to non-related components, that part is true. All those mistakes you mention can happen with a DIY digitizer replacement or a quick ink fix, so that point is moot and not specific to the ink method.
That said, if disassembly/reassembly are done properly, the worst case scenario is that they will need to replace the digitizer if the ink doesnt do the job. There really is no harm in trying this method first if tools are not readily available. If a shop charges more merely for noticing ink on the cable that they're going to replace anyway, that is not honest.
I agree that this isn't the "best" solution but it is also the less risky for the average DIYer. Again, less things to break.
anybody in Los Angelos area that needs this done by a pro you can look up "Navigation Services" in the orange county Yelp. the guys name is Dave and he does it fast with quality work. just had mine done at affordable price. his business hours at @-9 or so PM. best to call and schedule appointment.
I'm calling him to see if I can mail my unit to him....
Thanks for the info and posting this advice!
Omg, u show NOTHING! Its just 3 pictures with you talking. Why did you even bother putting up videos? You should just type it out in a blog that nobody will read because you can’t understand it unless you visually see someone else do it
You're welcome!
Exactly. He showed detail on removing the radio but nothing on fixing the actual problem thats titled. This isnt a radio removal video. Its supposed to be a screen fix video amd its not..smh fail.
