    For those wondering how you can do the same but in your macs turn it first into a file then drag it back.
    You can do that by going to the "Share" tab on top and then choosing "Export Song to Disk". It gives you choices for the file type so just choose one and after that press "Export". Once its done loading you'll find the file in your downloads then from there just drag it back to your recording :>

    Very timely video. For some reason, it really bothered me that your wave forms were so tiny in your last video with this song. It did sound fine, but I didn't even think about having nothing to edit or automate. I'm still working understanding input/output levels, volume, gain, etc. I would have just deleted a take if the signal looked that tiny and re -recorded it. Will give this a try! Thanks for sharing.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  6 лет назад

      Nice one! Glad it was timely. Yes, previously I would just struggle through and push the volume using clip gain, sliders and compression. Makes life so much easier to just do this. If I up the input gain and get bigger waveforms originally, I tend to get more noise in my tracks this will will probably be my go to method.

    Pete - a suggestion: when you 'click' on an icon, it would be great if you would do it more slowly. You tend to go at such a speed, it is difficult to see where the icon is that you are referring to. Apart from that, I enjoy your many videos. They have definitely helped me to understand and operate Garageband.

    Another great vid. Question. Once you’ve created and normalized the track, could you copy and paste it back in to the original? That way all of your effects and settings would already be set?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  6 лет назад +1

      That’s actually a really good point and a good idea. I’ve always just re-tweaked the new tracks but if you wanted exactly the same effects then yes, you could totally just delete the old audio files and copy them back. This is why I love sharing this stuff - you folks always have even more ideas to make my ideas better!

    • @gunterrichter4434
      @gunterrichter4434 5 лет назад +1

      Hey b kirn. Yes that's a good idea. You can also tap the track icon on the left of the track. There's a "Duplicate" option in the track menu that pops up. Duplicate creates a new blank track but keeps all the settings of the original, just no audio. Chances are after normalizing you'll have to tweak some of the settings, especially volume and compression levels. With using duplicate, you can keep the originals for reference. Just mute the originals until you need to refer to them.

    So just curious, is the only reason not to merge the original track vs making a copy is so you can then apply any effects, otherwise if say you have a "clean" track to start with , or you're not concerned w any effects you may have been messing with , you could technically just merge that track and skip the copy/duplicate step, right? Awesome content btw! have watched several vids, great tips .... and nice tunes as well 👌

    • @PeteJohnsMusic

    Great video Pete! It solved a lingering problem. Unfortunately, the solution created another issue. I tried to do this with an electric guitar track and could not find a way of putting back the presets on the merged track. I tried creating an empty track with the presets and copying the merged track onto it. But it does not sound the same. The distortion level is much higher, even though the amp settings are the same as the original. Does this technique not work with all types of tracks?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 лет назад

      Hey there Juan. So, it does get a bit tricky with the effects and the increased volume you get when you merge and normalise. Check out this video where I show a little more detail (from about 5:30) - ruclips.net/video/hmAIPmauvps/видео.html
      You just need to be really careful that you’re normalising the clean audio and not the already processed sound, or you’ll get double the effects which won’t sound good.

    • @juanjrivero
      @juanjrivero 5 лет назад +1

      @@PeteJohnsMusic Hey Pete. Thanks much for the quick reply. I'm fairly sure I'm following the steps correctly. But I'm ending up with the exact problem you describe. I first copy a crunchy guitar track onto a a fun/clean audio track and confirm that it sounds clean. Then I normalize it and confirm again that it still sounds clean. Then I copy it onto a track that has the same amp settings as the original. The sound I end up with, however, sounds a lot like a double effect. Too much crunch, too much hiss. Is there something different that I have to do with my effect/amp in the new track to compensate for the normalization? Thanks again.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 лет назад

      Yeah, you are adding more volume by normalising the track so you can try reducing the volume of the track, or diving back in to your amp or pedal settings and dropping the gain there. Sounds like you’re definitely doing it right so probably just an increased volume thing.

    Great Video, i dont know why the volume on my vocals goes lower when i merge them instead of going up. Im trying to find a way to increase the volume for uploading it to streaming platforms, i tried the FX EQ hack, rising the gain , but it dont really does much, would love to know more about using garageband IOS to meet streaming reproduction standards

      To be honest, my best tip is to usually turn volume down. What GarageBand does is apply limiting when your tracks are too loins and you get that “pumping” sound happening.

    Hi Pete! I hope you would see this. I had a problem with this. Since I used this technique, My Song in garageband duplicates into copies at my recents screen. How do I prevent this from happening?
    Right now the only solution I have is to delete them every time.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 года назад +1

      Yes, the merge process does create a duplicate project unfortunately and there’s no way to change this. You just need to delete the older versions.

    is it a bug that it doesn’t record the wave form correctly? I’ve had some guitar recordings show the waveform bigger. but then other times it’s small like your video shows. Isn’t there a way to just fix it so it shows a bigger wave form in the first place?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic

      It all comes down to the input volume when you record. If you’re having issues with lower waveforms, just turn up the input gain.

      Hey there. Thanks for watching and for your question.
      It’s definitely a balancing act to get the gain/volume levels right when recording and mixing. I do tend to record a little hotter these days again so that I’m not having to pull the volume up a lot all the time, but I will still err on the low side to avoid clipping, as you can increase gain, but once you clip, you can’t reduce and fix it.
      There’s a couple of videos that I have done recently which may give you some more gold for thought.
