- Traditional pigeon pose in yoga is performed on the floor and is difficult for some people due to knee pain and mobility issues in the knee and hip. Using the incline bench, the knee can be supported, taking pressure off the knee and making this an easier movement on the hip. This standing position also makes it easier to load your bodyweight into the stretch deeper. As you gain better mobility, you can lower the incline angle.
The main target of this stretch is the posterior capsule of the hip, the hip lateral rotators, and the posterior fibers of the gluteus medius. Hold for 1-2 minutes. Remember, when mobilizing joint capsules, time under tension is key, and 2 minutes represents the minimum effective dosage of time required for the tissues to lengthen.
