This had me thinking of an older gentleman in out town, His mailboxes were being smashed by people driving by with a bat. He voices his discomfort and lose of money in the bar. My father ending up building a steel mailbox and box iron post for it then cladded it all in wood. To anyone unknowing it looked only like a wood mailbox. A few days later they found an exploded bat on the ground and my father just fixed the façade. The old guy kept the broken bat as a trophy.
That’s awesome
this is how the movie PRETTY WOMAN came about
A similar thing happened in my parent's neighborhood. Vandals would speed down their road with the bat hanging out and get every box on the street. Luckily, they were too dumb to realize it's a federal crime to mess with the mail. It didn't end well for them, lol.
I wouldve put a false mailbox full of straight concrete just so their bat would break, or their hands would break lmao. I dont think you can get introuble for doing that, cause theyre the ones committing a crime by smacking them lol
my dad made a Steele mail box out of a quarter inch sheet and a 4inch gas pipe filled with concrete back in highschool for a wielding class project, It took out several cars (ripped the whole front end off a ranger all they way to the engine block XD), broken mail box smashers arms and survived numerous 4th of July explosions ( yes we tried to break it with homemade ghetto fireworks).
we still have it today and it still weighs around 300lbs not bad considering the mail box is over 40 years old now.
As a former mailman, I love this design and I love that it's so spacious. I can pretty much guarantee that any new rural carrier associate being trained on your route by your mailman will use your mailbox as a landmark on the route to organize the case at the office. "Once you reach the cool mailbox you can..." kind of thing
Me too. If you wonder what will be the last straw just be lazy and don’t empty it. Grrrr. Drove me nuts.
No way I would let a customer get away with that much mail. They would get a pink slip for a 10 day hold weeks ago. And no, I will not redeliver!
I find it funny. That's obviously part of a rural route but the "mailman" was dressed in uniform like a city carrier with a bag that even says "rural carrier". Also, yeah, I've dealt with boxes that full before, it's annoying having to take the mail back and leave a pink slip. That said... some things to note: residents do not own their mailboxes and they are supposed to get boxes installed by the postal service iirc. Technically, all "mailboxes" are property of the USPS. Residents should not be making and installing their own boxes without prior authorization from the USPS if I remember my postal codes correctly (which I might not. Haven't been a mailman for years now and was only ever an RCA)
@@Zeldafandaen It's really only enforced at the discretion of the main carrier of the route. And I can't think of a reason a carrier would have any problem with this box.
I've had problems with people changing out a normal mail box with a crappy little locked one with only a thin slot for letters before though.
My mail man is a total screw up. The USPS has gone to shit. Postal employees are the sloppest government employees ever.
DUDE! I think this is my favorite beginning of a DIY project that Ive EVER seen LOL! Amazing and I'm about to do a mailbox makeover soon so I'm now inspired to get creative haha!!! Love it!
Haha we had a blast doing it. I’m hoping to go back to doing these fun intros
@@KomarProject after the temper tantrum “errr I got ur mail” 🤣 that was hilarious!
That is a piece of art that moonlights as a mailbox.
Just an FYI to building a mailbox for USPS delivery. It is great that your letter carrier likes the box. If they want to be a stickler, they can choose to only deliver to boxes approved by them. All boxes will have a label or stamp indicating the Post Master General approval. It would really suck to build something this nice then they refuse to use the fruit of your effort.
another fyi is that you can have your custom mailbox approved by your local PMG if you decide to make your own or have one made for you
As a welder, I feel the need to give a helpful tip. At 3:53 as you finish welding, you see the fresh weld "rise" up. This is porosity (void spaces in the weld), and is usually caused by an excess of moving air. To much air displaces your weld gas, and opens your welds up to contamination. Like the mailbox, keep up the good work!
I came down to say something similar after I seen all of the porosity after he ground it all down.
So what is done to mitigate or prevent this?
Tip for any possible future sheet metal bending; start how you did but cut through a couple slots. Basically like long perforations, weakens the metal along it enough to bend with a less than adequate setup for sheet bending. The box turned out nice though 👍👍
Would slots cause rain to get in.
Its prob a dumb question.
I can relate! We're on a rural route. Our mailbox has also been tormented. My USPS carrier lamented how other mailboxes on our Rt were also subjected to MailBox BaseBall.
My hubster & neighbor welded a pretty long, 1/4" thick, >6", 8' iron pole to the iron Wagon Wheel our box sits on. Concreted in about 5' feet Deep..... approx, a week later, come about midnight, I heard a motor revving, peeling tires squeal. Then a fairly loud crash. 😊 The next day... pulling out of our long drive, onto the blacktop, we witnessed scattered car parts in the ditch & on the pavement. This included parts of a bumper. Wonder where that came from? 🤣 sorry but it was just too satisfying! Bless their hearts💕😏
Oh that crazy mailman! 🤣🤣 But really, this is mailbox goals, it is absolutely stunning!
When the box is stuffed the mailman can refuse to deliver anything to your address. You will have to go into the post office and talk to someone to get your service restored to your address. If it goes on too long they will be returning your mail to sender saying it was not able to be delivered. Check your box and keep it empty.
Sweet, I'm gonna avoid bills like this! Then sue the mail when my bills pile up!
Ok Karen
@@Gr3nadgr3gory no, you won't.
@@TheDrewcas watch me.
@@Gr3nadgr3gory good luck with that lawsuit, it'll go exactly nowhere.
Very awesome mailbox! You're also right that it's probably better to create a deeper foundation as I noticed your cement 'slab' appeared too thin and cracked immediately after your tightened the bolts. I hope you have since replaced the thin cement slab with a larger one that sits deeper into the ground. 🙂
I saw that too and I just felt all the pain of my past failed projects! 17:12
Love the combined use of metal and wood...and epoxy! Looks amazing!
the intro was absolutely priceless!
Everyone on your streets going to ask for a upgraded mailbox😍👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
The man went "postal" as they say. Great design and implementation!
Thank you so much
17:00 If you put the bolts in the concrete while the concrete is still wet, you don't need to drill in hard concrete.
Oh my gosh!!! That opening!!! Mom used to be a postal worker. I would tease her about "going postal" when that was a thing! Lol this guy definitely has her topped!! Love the video and the box and post look great!!
Jesus what an amazing work man, you’re an
architect when it comes to building ideas.
You need more planes!
You never know when 50 friends will need to help you on a project with lots of planing to do.
Genuinely love what you have created.
Dont take my comment in a negative way.
I recently saw a vid of an American guy (im British) that was fed up with his mailbox being damaged, so he reinforced it.
Someone then crashed into it (again) and they got injured, he was then successfully prosecuted by the injured party for the stronger mailbox.
Wow,that is incredible.
You Sir are an artist.
You should do a few deep posts to the bottom of the slab as a good ground anchor. And nylon rebar is great for reinforcement of slabs like this because they won't be affected by water, and they reinforce any shape you go for.
Dude, you're creativity is vast.
Mailbox❤💯...video intro❤💯X10😁👍
ABSOLUTELY SICK!!! WOW
Thanks man
Oh wow... it's beautiful!
😂😂😂 this intro is hilarious! 😂😂😂
WOW!!! Beautiful!!❤❤
I was skeptical of this idea at first when you described it but this came out really really cool!
Looks great! It was sad to see the slab crack when you tighten the bolt though...
Got snow? You got plow. Plow got your pretty new mailbox. Mailbox no more.
I have a truck side box that is 9' long, need to cut it in half for a trailer project. The first few minutes of your metal mailbox project you showed me how to cut it straight! Thanks
Gorgeous!
Love the way it came out and possibly the best video edit of yours yet! Keep ‘‘em coming!
👏👏👏 that is absolutely gorgeous!
❤️😀
At first, I had my doubts. I'm glad I finished watching the video. The project turned out great.
Buddy this is a great project. Very creative use of the slab, cool metal treatment. Kind of mid century modern, industrial and rustic. Nice seeing creative guys do these demos. Really love this outcome.
Thanks so much Daniel. Really appreciate it
I wish I had an ounce of your talent, this is such a beautiful (so detailed) mailbox. It’s beautiful.
Brilliant
Clamp the metal and bend down so you can apply body weight. Also Blowtorch anneal the area before the bend.
Bend the big end down!
what a bad ass mailbox. Those live edge pieces became priceless with the sealant. A CA fan
great opening but man you gotta pick up your mail! LOL
Beautiful piece.
What a unique mailbox!
Being as I have a long driveway, and the entrance is in a curve, my mailbox kept getting knocked down, so being as My father and I worked in industrial construction, and had loads of extra materials from demolition and rebuilding, we took a 6"x6"x.5" metal box beam, cut it to 8' put a mounting base on it for normal mailboxes, and concreted is the ground at 5 foot, works like a charm and is always standing.
I have found some spare car parts around it, and even had to straighten a lean from a Cop backing in to it, but the lean was nothing compared to the damage to his bumper and trunk lid.
Now that’s a work of art my friend.
Cool! Never thought of the base that much. Built my new one because of "MailBox Baseball," and snowplows. 14 ga. Can stand a one gallon gas jug in the doorway. But that base! That's very cool.
Baseball bat upside the head. Love that tink sound it makes.
It's amazing what can be done with a little inspiration. And a shop full of tools, hehe. Awesome job!
Two tips for you.
-when pouring liquid out of full gallon size plastic bottles, hold the bottle with the handle side down, or at the side but lower than the spout at first until some of the liquid has been poured out. This will keep you from spilling so much
- For pouring out of metal or plastic gallon cans, they make plastic pouring thingies that snap into the groove at the top of the can. You can pick them up at the paint section of your local big box store for super cheap. They keep you from spilling and keep the product from filling up the groove, making it easier to put the lid back on. Plus, they're reusable.
Best looking mailbox ever created. Mail men everywhere gonna be jealous.
Thank you
The wood was so beautiful
love that mail box
Wonderful video my man. love the colors of that wood.
A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't!
nicest lightning rod I've ever seen 👍😁
Awesome!
Looks good 👍🏽
Crazy organized on the tools I like it and thought my way worked well but think about changing it to less decorative and more efficient and accessable to utilize. Nice job on the video,Trying to get my shop and RUclips going by the end of next month so 2023.
Great mailbox! It looks awesome.
Having seen it on IG. This it going be a great video. The finished product looks awesome
That mailbox looks gorgeous.
I like the way you use some of the products I haven't seen some used that way
The willow looks beautiful.
That is some beautiful wood! I'm having a severe case of shop envy right now too.
Bart this turned out absolutely amazing and looks so freaking cool. I agree with you completely. I would most definitely be upset with the snow plow trucks if they hit it. Can't wait to see what's next. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Build On. Weld On. Fab On. Keep Making. God Bless.
Thank you buddy ! You’re the man !!
Pretty creative design
once heared about a neighbourhood where mailboxes where driven over and flattened , they had throuble finding the culprit
so one of the guys in that neighbourhood figured he would fix that , he gotten an old piece of drillpipe filled it with concrete and drilled it 6 feet intoo the ground setting it in yet more concrete , then he set the bait ; a verry nicely painted up mailbox made from 5mm thick steel on top
that night they heared a noise outside and in the morning saw a oiltrail from the mailbox down the road to a house with a severely damage offroad pickup sitting in the driveway
legend saying the mailbox is still standing to this day
incredible
really cool!
Ok, this made me chuckle.
MY GOOD GAWD !!!!!
THAT GRAIN........
**DROOL** ** DROOL**
That is THE coolest mailbox I have EVER seen.
My only critique would be, I would have loved to have seen black epoxy on the lower part also. Buuuuuuut, I'm kind of an epoxy junkie though, I think everything looks better with epoxy... Hahaha.
I am not taking away anything away from it, this thing is absolutely gorgeous FANTASTIC work sir.
You knock this right out of the park. 🤘🤘
Wow nice wall 3:35 ! It reminds me a classic shop of my 96 years old grandpa here in Poland ! cheers
Nazdrowie kolego
Complimenti ! La mailbox e' bellissima.
I suspect you will be replacing that concrete base much sooner than you thought. I imagine with a strong wind it would topple over pretty easily. I would hate to see something that turned out so nice get damaged from something like that.
1970s miss blowing up letter boxes with Penny bungers you go around a few blocks & see the Upgrades from wood to steel :)
when crackers were out in OZ banned every thing is banned in oz even slingshots with rubber bands xd
Great video very entertaining 😊
Messing with the mail is a million dollar fine and ten years in ail.
going to use this product for a rear seat delete floor in a mini cooper. TY
Okay, that mailman needs to be fired 🤣🤣🤣 Great build here!
LOL! Amazing work!
Newman!!!!!!!!!!✊
You need a Brake. A brake is a metalworking machine that allows the bending of sheet metal. A cornice brake only allows for simple bends and creases, while a box-and-pan brake also allows one to form box and pan shapes. It is also known as a bending machine or bending brake or in Britain as a sheet metal folder or just a folder.
Intro got me... subbed now. Hilarious.
Haha, great job, Bart! Fun video!
I was a rural carrier for 35 years and have seen it all. Nice looking mailbox. I want to offer a couple of suggestions. First the flag is on the wrong side but will probably be ok. Suppose to be on the side the carrier comes from. If you look up postal regulations, the box must be on a breakaway post. I have seen people frustrated at getting their boxes knocked down cement railroad track for a post. Where I can see your frustration, if a car hits it and people get hurt you could be held responsible.
well done
Love this video!!
Thank you
Wow. .. that's beautifull
Thank you
We used to have trouble with teens smashing our rural mail box, they’d hang out of a car window and bash it with a baseball bat.
My dad had a plan. He bought a large-ish PVC Pipe cut to fit the depth of the inside of the mailbox. He placed it in the center, then poured cement between the outer edges of the pipe, and the inside wall of the mailbox. Plenty of room for the mail inside the pipe. They tried it smash it early on. That was in 1982, the same mailbox is still there. Only the one dimple to the metal mailbox where it was hit, and strangely it never happened again.
That is a piece of art not just a mailbox!
Thanks so much
Very nice
Back 40 years, a friend, who lived in rural California, kept having his huge mailbox vandalized by kids in cars swinging a baseball bat while racing by.
After about the third box being flattened, he mounted another, but this one except for a 3" tube down its center, for actual mail, was filled with concrete.
It didn't take long before a kid had it in his sights and drove by, his friend wielding the bat.
And . . .
One kid's wrist, arm and shoulder shattered, a lengthy hospital stay as well as lengthy trial (only in California !!), my friend got a PO box in town, no roadside mail delivery.
I am positive that you are great at woodworking... welding, well ;)
Nice work, I subscribed
The concrete cracking at 17:10 hurts my soul
Look, it's one of those Dazed and Confused kids all grown up. 😎
Functional and beautiful! My address was just changed for the third time since moving to my acreage 30 years ago. Used to be a Rt number with a box number then it was changed to a 911 address and now they’ve given our dead end road a name and changed our house number. UPS, FEDEX and Amazon delivery drivers are all confused. Thinking about putting a second mailbox up for a while to alleviate the issue. Maybe I’ll get creative too. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Amazing Work!!!!!! Thanks Dude!!!! Keep Up The Great Work!!!!!👏👍😎
Intro is the intro to GUARDIANS of the GALAXY & the matching scene from ENDGAME...
"This how you think you sound" vs "This is how you really sound"
I always wanted 2 do an industrial spring into the ground so it would be snow plow proof
