I died inside seeing E.R. on this podcast. I loved them on Grey's and their music is great! I never knew they did work before in Chicago. Wish I had known about them back then!
So. Out (shy) lesbian (30 years) here. From UK. Love these guys. SB still makes me lose my words just looking at her - but the wisdom flowing from ERF was just fascinating and humbling. Gender studies is something I could listen to for a serious length of time. Thanks guys! Great episode
As a 40-something lesbian who's been out for 15 years, this was a great episode. E.R. Fightmaster has truly made me see things that have been confusing me for a long time. I see myself in this. Thank you so much for this. You two have no idea how much this helped me.
E.R. needs their own podcast! I could listen to them for hours not just because of their pleasant voice but because there’s so much substance in what they’re sharing!
Ohh I love this! Thank you Shannon for giving queer people the chance to see such interesting conversations with your podcast! I loved the talk about gender. When I realized I was a lesbian I started dressing more masculine because I wanted girls to notice me at parties and stuff, but I've never really felt comfortable being too masc. Nowdays I'm redescovering my gender expression and being way more feminine and that makes me feel soo much better, more confident and more beautiful and attractive as well. It's such a journey for everyone and I feel like the community as a whole needs to talk more about gender expression cause I feel we do experience it differently from straigh people. Thank you for this!
ER Fightmaster truly has a unique energy and personality. They are insightful yet approachable. They are so cool and witty and well-spoken. And they have this warm, nurturing energy that makes u feel safe and cared for. 😘
My idea for the WLW dating show: make it a regional separation, not a gender one. NY versus Cali Gals. Makes it more fascinating and starts a conversation rather than calling out individuals for such a personal attatchement like gender identity. Kinda like TRHW franchise, but you can separate the women by region, all on one dating show. I want to see this SO bad. Could you imagine.
The more I listen to you, the more I realise how similar we are and I'm so happy you are so good at putting into words what I usually can't. It feels good to know there are more people like me
I'm reading Hayley Kiyoko's book called Girls like Girls, and it's one of the most authentic representations on navigating coming out and feelings/relationships.
41:23 someone was able to finally articulate what I’ve never been able to say out loud before. This episode was so validating for my boundaries and feelings❤
This is the first I’ve heard of ERF and they definitely are like someone I’m going to enjoying looking up to in the media eye. I’m excited for this non binary representation🎉
i hate to only talk about ERF's role on grey's anatomy, but as a person who came out as nonbinary before there was really any representation in media for us, i was pleasantly surprised by grey's anatomy's portrayal. i loved that they didn't make it into a big deal, and focused on the character's achievements and medical expertise rather than their gender identity or sexual orientation. i also loved callie and arizona's relationship because it showed queer relationships in a light that felt just as normal and real as straight relationships. queer relationships have fights, hard times, infidelity, toxicity, etc., along with all the good stuff.
does shannon know about the LGBTQ season of Are You The One? A lot of the suggestions people had about an all lesbian love is blind reminded me of that
Greetings from a Venezuelan living in Argentina! I'm not American, but I'm so grateful to be bilingual and have the opportunity to listen to these incredible podcasts. Xoxo
32:45 you know how sometimes ppl say they think taylor swift is in their head bc of the songs she writes that perfectly describe situations? sometimes that’s how I feel about you on these episodes shan !! if we ever cross paths irl, I fear we could yap for days
literally paused at 32:47 because i was in shock. I couldn’t believe ANYONE else felt this same way, then I come to the comments… this is why representation is so important. shannon, you’re out here making people feel so seen 🥺
@@kristendanks2964 right!? I will say this is the only queer content I regularly tune into and I don’t have many queer friends so maybe there’s more stuff like this out there but THIS is where I’m seeing conversations that I don’t see anywhere else. glad this podcast exists and glad that I stumbled upon it earlier this year even though it has made me have realizations about myself that I was not ready to face lol.
fuuuuuuuudge! How did I not know that the mean girl first girlfriend thing is a trope! Damn. It would have been lovely to go to the island for 4 years of relaxing, learning, waves, giggles and tears. Return to society fully actualised, instead we dodge bullets on the battlefield of growth vs societal comprehension whilst simultaneously nursing your own trauma wounds. Whelp. Fun, fun, fun xx
omg e.r and talking about sunburn at the start of the episode!!!! sunburn was one of my favourite reads from this year i need to talk to people about it !!! also obsessed with greys anatomy atm so very excited for e.r. to be the guest !!
OMG, I absolutely DEVOURED this episode. E.R. is amazing! They are SO insightful. My god, I LOVE the way they think. I hope you are friends now because your banter with each other was wonderful. Wow. And I now want to watch Grey's Anatomy JUST for E.R. Also, they are absolutely right about you being a person full of light and kindness. Glad the world gets to experience it. And glad to have people like E.R. in the world too.❤✨️🙌🏽
55:37 "we love that boy" lol yes dr. amelia is beloved ❤️ My fav character other than Lexi Grey (RIP sis). Would also love to see Adelaide Kane on the pod! She did the scrubbing in podcast at a fan convention recently so she might be open to them and loves talking about authentic bi representation.
I don’t believe that everything gets exactly progressively better, it’s more like cycles in between the bigger exponential line. For example, my dad who’s 74 years old tells me that when he was young in the 70s, when men started to let their hair grow and stuff like that, it was actually a lot happier and simpler than today. He said he had girl friends, boy friends, some of them queer, and nobody cared about it. He says the generation before his, and the one after are more judgemental. Edit: I saw you kind of mentioned this later. Of course because of people being complacent but also because the people who don’t agree get like triggered
To be fair to your self-assessment that you would be fine if born in either body, my dad, brother, and mom all said something similar during a conversation about gender I once had with them. And they're a bunch of straights. Some people are just not that fussed.
This was a great interview of topics. ERF said it perfect that we can have empathy for how men have been molded by society while still expecting them to step up and put in the labor. Both Ted Cruz and Lindsay Graham do give ugly entitled loser energy. The push and pull and shifts in social progress as a society can be seen throughout history for sure. I think ER did a good job of validating shan about gender and hair length, and answering questions thoughtfully.
*I'd love Shannon to do a dedicated pod about her ADHD, so many successful people in the industry have it. She must have so many inspiring and crazy stories 🙌❤*
Hahaha, way before Shannon asked to be friends, I thought they should be friends. I hope you keep in touch. You seem to match very well. Great podcast because of it. Also, right after the podcast I got a very gendered, pink doll, oh you are such a great mother (to a toddler), add. Which I thought to be funny considering. Anyway, thanks for this conversation, I got a lot out of it. Lots of love, Marieke
Millennial mom here and I'm proud to say im doing my absolute best to raise an empathetic boy into an emotional responsible man for the betterment of society 🙂↕🙂↕
Great interview with a wonderfully intelligent human...especially the part where she spoke of not all of your friends looking like you. I've felt so alone in that feeling... A welcome surprise, because I've never even watched "Grey's Anatomy"...🔆 Can you get Emma D'Arcy, next, perhaps?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN WITH E.R. FIGHTMASTER? Shan you are doing the lord's work
My exact reaction
I died inside seeing E.R. on this podcast. I loved them on Grey's and their music is great! I never knew they did work before in Chicago. Wish I had known about them back then!
Every time shannon is self deprecating and ERF gives the KINDEST SOFTEST words of validation 😢🥺
I'm quite literally taking notes every time E.R. Fightmaster talks
So. Out (shy) lesbian (30 years) here. From UK.
Love these guys. SB still makes me lose my words just looking at her - but the wisdom flowing from ERF was just fascinating and humbling. Gender studies is something I could listen to for a serious length of time.

I'm reading Hayley Kiyoko's book called Girls like Girls, and it's one of the most authentic representations on navigating coming out and feelings/relationships.

@15:15… I’m screaming ERICA HAHN
I just need to know what hair products ERF uses, does anyone know? Their hair is always on point
I don't want to come off rude. What was e.r thought process to come up with the name e.r fight master its a pretty cool name.
Not them forgetting Dr Erica Hahn 😂
Has E.R. Fightmaster read Female Masculinity? Would love their thoughts
so nice to see ER here! and very happy for them and Caterina. so happy that they got together after Grey
Shannon has gotten so much better at podcasting and interviewing. Great convo. Learned a lot.

I love these conversations about gender spectrum so much 💛 I’d love to see some more representation of non binary people who are femme presenting 🌈
Best episode yet..FYI
julien and er doing a show together? i'm already at the venue waiting.
Just saw this person for the first time on your TikTok. Came here & immediately liked it bc I know it’s gunna hit
Funny to see someone genuinely make our host kinda nervous... ha E.R. has a way about them.
Unpopular opinion : your hair slays like this
Coming out of the closet to date the meanest person ever is so fucking real. WHY is this our story?! 💔
They are so incredibly intelligent and beautiful. Kind of in awe of them
To be fair to your self-assessment that you would be fine if born in either body, my dad, brother, and mom all said something similar during a conversation about gender I once had with them. And they're a bunch of straights. Some people are just not that fussed.

“Everyone’s seen greys anatomy” lolll except me 😂 I’ve never watched a single episode and don’t know a single character
They’re only 32?! I thought ER was at least 38-40
I just got through season 18 of grey’s anatomy! They were soooo good!
Time stamps going forward please - when the actual interview starts.
