    An additional issue is the original camera software that comes stock on your phone might not be recognizing the external mic. I had to download a 3rd party camera app that gives the option to choose what mic to use.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, that could be an issue at times. Occasionally the mic isn't recognized by the phone so I disconnect everything then reconnect and the phone will recognize the mic. Sometimes I have to plug in a set of earbuds into he headphone port on the TRRS connector for the mic to work.

    Thank you. I found this to be very informative. Question: Could a more professional mic be used, perhaps employing the output of a mixer. I ask that question because I'm wondering if this setup could be used for remote broadcasts for radio stations. I assume the mixer output would have to me mic level, as opposed to line level, right? Again, thank you.

      I’m glad you enjoyed the video! One thing to watch out for is that some Android phones can’t record audio from an external mic. I didn’t know this awhile back. The issue is the camera software/app. I think it’s mostly fixed now but I’ve seen in more than one Android phone where it didn’t work. However on my Google Pixel it was fixed when they released the updated camera software on the Pixel 3. But the TRRS plug is definitely what you will need!

    Hopefully you still check your comments because I have another! What if I wanted to have the option to use 2 lavalier microphones? If I plugged them both into the splitter shown, then one wouldn't work (is that correct?). What is my solution in this case?

  • @prakashwadhwani
    @prakashwadhwani 4 года назад

    Excellent Video!! Very lucidly explained. Thx so much!
    One small query ... After connecting the TRRS cable to the phone ... the mic which is to be connected to the mic socket at the other end of the TRRS cable should have a mono or stereo jack (pin)? ie should the mic have a TS or TRS pin ?? In this video your mic has a stereo (TRS) pin. But in another video where you demonstrate how to connect a dynamic mic to an android phone, you specifically mentioned the 3.5mm pin should be MONO (TS).
    I'd appreciate if you could clear my confusion.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  7 лет назад +6

      Thanks for your question! The thing to know about recording on a smartphone is that you won't necessarily be able to hear what you're recording as you're recording it. It is totally a function of the recording app that you're using. I'm sure some will let you monitor the audio that is coming into the phone while you're recording but I think that most do not. However, when you have both the mic and headphone plugged into the adapter, you will be able to playback and hear your audio after you've stopped recording.
      I don't know which apps will allow you to monitor audio during recording. You'll just have to read the details on different apps. I have seen one video recording app on iOS that allows audio monitoring during recording but I know that doesn't help you out. I'm sure there are some available for Android. Hope I understood your question correctly!

      With this you can’t monitor live audio while you’re recording. You will have to stop recording and play it back to hear. One thing I need to let you know. This does not work on all Android phones during video recording. It all depends on the camera app you’re using. If your built-in app doesn’t work you should try downloading a free one to use. Using a wireless mic is similar on a smartphone. But If you don’t have a headphone jack you can still do it. I made a video for a One Plus phone which you can use as a reference for connecting a wireless mic to your A8. Take a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/QTE2fE002EI/видео.html

  • @lsethhill

    This seems to be the stock answer everyone is giving on RUclips but unfortunately it doesn't work on any android I've tried. I've tried it on S10+, Moto One, Moto G7+, and LG V30+. The missing piece in this video is a comparison of sound recording with the mic in and without the mic plugged in. Just using the TRRS adapter solution the devices continue to record with their internal mic so yes its recording sound, but not with the mic I want. The missing component here is something that forces the phone to use the connected external mic, simply plugging in the TRRS adapter doesnt force the device to pull sound from the mic. The only solution I've found so far is the Open Camera app which has a setting to choose the external mic but I dont like that solution. I want to use another camera app and have the sound pull from a TRRS external mic... so the search continues.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  4 года назад

      The TRRS adapter is the solution to get external mics to work on Android or iPhone. It definitely works. And it also works on MacBooks and PC laptops that only have one 3.5mm port. My question is whether you are trying to record audio while recording video? Lots of stock Android camera apps don’t support external microphones. The old phone I used in this video can’t record from an external mic while recording video with the included camera app. I found this out later. But look to see if there are updates to your camera app. I have an original Google Pixel phone that couldn’t record external mic audio during video recording. But when the Pixel 3 came out they update the their camera app to version 6.1 across all their phones and now my Pixel can use an external mic during video recording. On iPhones using an external mic with a TRRS adapter has never been an issue. I apologize for the long answer if you’re not doing video recording. But hope this helps!

      On some Android phones you can record audio from the external mic during video recording and some you can’t. The old LG phone in the video couldn’t do it. The quality is rather poor. Distortion and general sound quality poor. I recently started using the Zoom G1 effects unit as a makeshift. mixer for the backing tracks from the sound and my Strat Copy. It sounds pro level quality. No loud noise from amp. I just did a working man blues improv guitar and it sounded fairly 👍..

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  3 года назад +1

      This with a mic connected to the adapter it will record room sound as you’d imagine. However you can connect a keyboard to it the same way and record your music. You’ll probably need to connect the the phone to the headphone output of the keyboard. But start with the volume low and adjust from there to get undistorted recordings. With this method you will get an isolated recording of the keyboard only. Hope this helps!

      No, you won't be able to use the internal and external mic at the same time. When you plug in the microphone it will disable the internal mic. Just like when you plug in headphones it disables internal speakers. In your situation you'll need a 2nd recording device to record audio from a microphone and then sync it up during editing.

    • @TheRenderQ

      You can use the TRRS adapter with an external mic for phone calls. However, you would have to connect an external speaker to the output of the TRRS adapter to a speaker or headphones to be able to hear. If you use a speaker, don't have the volume up too high when it's close to the mic or else the person on the other line will hear feedback. Some Bluetooth speakers have calling features where you can use the speaker to talk and hear calls.

Unfortunately that isn’t possible. But this is something I know a few viewers who are teachers have been wanting to do. If I figure something out I will definitely make a video about it. My initial thoughts are to use a wireless clip on microphone setup where the transmitter is clipped in a person. Then the receiver is plugged into a Bluetooth speaker‘s 3.5mm port. I have all those items here and will have to try it soon just because now I’m curious!

Just use a 3.5mm aux cable connected to a speaker on the headphone output of the TRRS adapter. This will work on Apple and Android devices.
