Led Zeppelin was more than just rock. They were blues, country, funk, heavy metal and soul. They were just this in one word - VERSATILE.
Guns & Roses basically just kept in one lane - hard rock with sometimes doing a metal ballad. That's it with them. Guns & Roses wishes they could have been somewhere in the same realm as Led Zep. They couldn't even match Led Zeppelin musician to musician.

Musicians learn from musicians that came before; Led Zeppelin came before Guns and Roses. The question might be; did Guns and Roses learn and improve on what came before?
Taste in music is subjective but the music itself is NOT subjective. So we can judge a composition by (1) the vision it proposes and (2) whether the structure helped the musician(s) convey that vision. If the vision exalts virtues the audience is lifted, society is fortified and civilisation bettered. As I see it; to the degree the structure of the composition brings out the clearest expression of that vision from a competent musician/artist, we can judge. My 2 cents.

Actually.. It is Blues.. Electric Blues.. Rock and Roll Blues.. Led Zep.. And many of these musicians.. Idolized the older Black Blues legends.. The Black Blues musicians are the godfathers of Rock and Roll.. Guys like Page, Plant, Clapton will be the first ones to tell you.. They listened and learned from the great Blues Legends when they grew up!.. Actually many of the classic Rock songs were originally created and sung bye the Black Blues Masters.. Which were basically wrangled away from them.. From the record companies of their day.. For pennies on the dollars... The documentaries about this stuff are out there.. If you dig...
Love to watch these young black people.. Discovering this music.. They just have no clue.. That rock was born from great Black Blues Masters.. Search them out and discover!

I grew up in the 90s as a huge GNR fan and learned about Led Zeppelin because they cited them as some of their influences. Having said that, for me there is no comparison-nobody has more genuine talent than Zeppelin, and their music is so genuine. Soul, fluidity, technique, it’s got it all.

I was a 80's teenager bought Appetite for Destruction cassette tape rocked it in my car. I went to a GNR concert in Dallas 1988, and I can still tell you that Led Zeppelin in my opinion is the greatest band of all time. There is no one that even comes close. GNR was heavily inspired by Led Zeppelin that is a fact.

I can't even take this kid's first impression. No clue of the rabbit hole this band takes you down. Lots to learn here. So many more songs for him to hear before he makes that call. Led Zeppelin is for all the ages and that's held true through the decades. GnR can't hold a candle to these guys. Just one woman's opinion. I do wanna congratulate him on 80K! That's huge! @@6ffrey958 You and I have no argument there. Axl Rose was a punk who thought he was something but how quickly he learned. It was actually our local outdoor venue that he caused a riot and tore up the place. Just a tid bit of info I thought I'd throw in. No class and no range for certain!
Zeppelin was at heart a blues group (their first 2 lps were pure blues lps), who begin to experiment more with different genres with later lps, but their core was still the blues.
Zep helped bring the classic Black blues back to the U.S. in the late '60s and throughout the '70s. Clapton, Mayall, and so many other Brits toured the U.S. playing their electrified blues, much to the hedonistic pleasure of the hippies and young adults in that era. And now, 50 years on, Zep is still doin' a fantastic job of opening minds and ears and hearts.
Even Slash is a big Jimmy Page fan, and gets nervous when Page turns up at a show.
P.S. if it wasn't for Zeppelin, GnR never would've existed.

That was one of the best reactions I've ever seen. Dad was feeling every second of that. That even turned his son around. They are so talented they can do any genre of music and be on top of any style. True musicians with special chemistry that land them in the top 5 bands of all time.

No industry plant here. Jimmy Page was the last member of the great band, the Yardbirds, who disbanded in 1968. Jimmy was the UK's greatest session musician (hired to play on recordings for other bands), and he was in the Yardbirds at their end. When the Yardbirds disbanded, Jimmy had Yardbird concert dates already booked, so he needed to get guys together to be the "New Yardbirds." Another great session musician, keyboardist/bassist John Paul Jones heard Jimmy was putting together a new band, and asked to join. When Jimmy was looking for a lead singer, he wanted to use the great Terry Reid....but he was under contract and committed to other gigs. Terry suggested an "unknown" singer he had heard play live in a small club, Robert Plant. Jimmy went to hear Plant sing, and offered him the gig. Robert accepted, and also told Jimmy that Robert had a friend who was a great drummer, by the name of John Bonham. Jimmy went to hear Bonham play, and convinced him to join the New Yardbirds. They played a gig or two under that name, but changed their name to "Led Zeppelin" (a name suggested by the Who's Keith Moon) before the first album was released.
Zeppelin actually did things the record industry hated. Jimmy paid out of his pocket to record Led Zep's first album before they even had a record contract. When they tried to get a record deal, all the studio needed to do was to put the album put on vinyl....the recording was done. So when negotiating the record deal, Jimmy was in control. In exchange for giving the studio a completed album, all Jimmy wanted was full creative control of the band. The band got to decide whether to release singles, not the studio. The band decided which songs were released, not the studio. The band created the branding and album designs, and had final say - not the studio. Pure genius.
Because of Jimmy Page's brilliance, Led Zep was in complete control of what they did, and when. Studio heads and the record industry resented it, because it meant no one could control Led Zep.
And from what I read, they also got something else no other band had gotten at that time - 90% of the take of their shows. That's incredible! But then again, promoters and venues we're happy to have 10% of a LZ show. It was still massive! 👍🏻🤘🏼

Great History lesson Keith moon didn't actually suggest the name he jokingly says that the band would go over like a Led Balloon. Jimmy liked the idea and chose Zeppelin as it was the largest balloon( Zeppelin Blimp).
They're a British band. Jimmy Page was the one that put everyone together. They can't be compared to a typical rock band, because they were one-of-a-kind. No other band can touch them. They were perfect chemistry!!!

Thats what feeling the music is and thats what music is about ! Bringing people together in perfect harmony! Music has no race so “they” created genres” because managers and technology have blasted every face to every voice through all outlets. Then leaving the decision to the “Big Wigs” to stuff everyone into there “genre” no matter the bias or deliberate action for which the “Big Wig” wants artists in their little box!

Led 1 starts with Communication Breakdown…impossible to say they are just a blues band…they did whatever they needed to do…versatile is the word…first song I ever heard from them was Whole Lotta Love…in 1970. All their albums had at least 3 to 6 killer songs still with us today.
Led Zeppelin is able to play all types of music. And the level of proficiency is extraordinary. This cannot be said for all bands.

Bruh... You have to let him listen to the whole song all the way through. You can't expect them to form an opinion when you pause it after 30 seconds. That being said, while I am a GNR fan they are not even in the same league as Zeppelin. To be honest no one is. Every song sounds completely different than the next. Their versatility is unmatched. Led Zeppelin is without a doubt the greatest rock and roll band of all time.

Led Zeppelin is a rock band. Arguably the best ever. But they had very heavy blues influence, folk, etc.

I was born in 1980....heard Guns n Roses 1st and still love them to this day. HOWEVER, once I started branching out and becoming more diverse in music, Led Zeppelin has become a staple in my life, is my favorite, and remains the best band I've ever heard. Each member of the group is a genius!!
The way that the rhythm section supports the melody within the groove and form it is absolutely Incredible!

Zeppelin released 9 albums in 10 yrs covering every genre of popular & progressive music of their time and many years to come.
Led Zeppelin is an English progressive *rock* group who came together in 1968 after playing in other bands in the 60s. Page was a session musicians and member of The Yardbirds before forming Zeppelin. Plant had been singing in local bands for several years before he met Page. Page and Plant wanted to form their own band and picked established session musician Jones and Bonham, who had been drumming for several bands in the Birmingham area of England and knew Plant who recommended him to Page for their new band. There was no way they were "industry plants", it almost never worked that way in the 60s-70s. Progressive rock is experimental, highly skilled musicians who combine different genres, instruments, tempo, etc in new compositions and configurations. None of these groups sound like each other. Examples are The Beatles, Genesis, Yes, Emerson-Lake-and-Palmer, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Rush, etc. But *all* are considered part of rock. Zep emphasized blues-rock fusion along with more traditional rock elements in new, amazing compositions that showcased each band members’ exceptional talents.
So glad You are introducing the younger generation to Led Zeppelin. Simply the BEST band ever !!!!! I assure You they were not industry plants. Look up the history. Rock on !!!!!!!!!!
You guys are have a good dynamic together. It reminds me of when I discovered Zeppelin as a little kid around age 10 from my friends oldest brothers record collection. At first I loved all the straight ahead rock songs like The Ocean, Black Dog and Rock n' Roll. As I got older I started to appreciate the more nuanced tracks like No Quarter , In my time of Dy'ing, Since I've been loving you..etc..

Revisiting almost a year later. Your young man (I hope) has since listened to more Zep and realized just how many genres they both filled and excelled at. Reggae? D'yer Maker. The very first Punk song? Communication Breakdown. They covered ballads, blues, psychedelic rock, Middle Eastern dreams (Kashmir), and everything in between.
No contest, Led Zeppelin was a pioneer in 70’s rock for future generations. So many artists covered their songs. Their diversity in musical styles and their skills as musicians set them apart.
Led Zeppelin are the GOATs.

Awesome intergenerational reaction to the lords of Rock. Each of these members carry the lead with seeming ease when called on. For that they are widely and rightfully granted legendary status. And together you really need to watch the Live version from MSG 1973. It is arguably the best ever 'live' music presentation by any group.

Led Zeppelin was the epitome of pure talent, perfection, and masterful brilliance in the art of expression through the phrases of musical genius of which they presented to us in such a short period of time. They were in the upper escalon in the musical arena no other band had been since Jimi Hendrick and the experience. Led Zeppelin remains as the band that achieved greatness from their craft and forever will be marked as the greatest band of all time. I challenge you all to binge listen to all of their material recorded, studio and live. Especially the live. Not alot good bands could produce sounds and perform on stage like they did. And then after you have listened to their entire discography listen to the other band in discussion as disputing Led Zeppelin's position as the all time greatest band ever. Check all the boxes that apply when evaluating. I.E.- songs in top lists, albums of all time lists, complexity, creativity, articulations, stage presence and performance, talents from each band member and so on.
Fun fact, the entire guitar solo work in this song is a JAM. the producers asked page to write a solo after,so he did and they said "the originals better" 😂

Live versions capture a more human and real experience
The MSG live version of SIBLY (Since I've Been Loving You) demonstrates LZ in their heyday and shows why they were the hammer of the GODS. That is the best song of all time and done in a way that is still to this day GOD-like.

No it isn't, not even close. By the MSG performance on Song Remains the Same, Plant had damaged his voice. He doesn't come close to the performance he gives on this recording.

This SONG is different. Led Zeppelin is very versatile. Not saying that there weren't some songs by GNR that were also. November Rain as an example. Zeppelin's: Immigrant Song, Rock N Roll, and whole Lotta Love were very rock driven and Zeppelin blew these song to legendary heights. Sorry GNR is Byron Scott to Led Zeppelin's Michael Jordan.

As a musician & multi instrumentalist who was taught classical piano I couldn't disagree with you more. All across the world music has been played by different people's from ancient times. Some bands are very versatile & include music from various parts of the globe.

Having grown up in a white suburban neighborhood, I feel as if Led Zeppelin introduced an entire generation to the blues through their "rock" music 🎶 I was fortunate enough to have my Momma share the music of Billie Holiday with me, so I could appreciate the nuances. The band formed in London in 1968. Probably the 3rd most popular band in all of rock history: Beatles, Rolling Stones, and then Led Zeppelin. I like how you pointed out that every instrument is distinguishable........ I have always felt that as well. With large bands some of the instruments get stepped on by other instruments. This band is the next best thing to a power trio (Such as a Robin Trower) in that manner. All of these members, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones were all at the top of their game while they morphed into one of the best rock/blues bands of all times. My favorite LZ tune without a doubt is WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS (A young Robert Plant blows hauntingly on the harmonica and the mood of the song is unquestionably carried by John Bonhams drum). My favorite reaction to Led Zeppelin ever. I appreciate you my brothers. Led Zeppelin blows guns'n'roses completely out of the universe like they never existed. Led Zeppelin is the king of rock and everybody else is there minions. Now you have to react to Achilles Last Stand and also music from Physical Graffiti. I totally appreciate you my brothers until then stay well. Led Zeppelin set the standard for everybody else
No industry plant, Page and Jones were studio musicians who knew each other from session work, Page was putting together a new band and Jones responded to an ad Page had placed that he was looking for a bass player. Page had asked Terry Reid to be his singer but he was not able to ,so he recommended a singer from out in the English countryside named Plant. Page went to see Plants band and Plant suggested he check out Bonham who was in another band , he was a childhood friend of Plants. Page loved both Plant and Bonham and asked them to join his band and that’s how Led Zep formed. They were pure thunder from their very first rehearsal together . They are all from England, Page and Jones from London , Plant and Bonham from the countryside. It was the will of the Gods that put them together, not some record company.

Love the line when Robert Plant sings "Open my front door, hear my back door slam... I must have one of those new-fangled back doors, man." What a creative way of telling the listener that his girl is cheating on him. Oh, and Led Zeppelin was from England. Jimmy Page had been the guitarist for the band "The Yardbirds" and when that band broke up, he found Robert Plant and John Bonham, both age 19 at the time, in another band called Band of Joy. They added a session bassist named John Paul Jones and the rest was history. I also agree with JoJo, GNR and LedZep are too different to compare. Both are great in their own way. Cheers, gentlemen!
