    Actually there are less than 200,000 Orcs that are shown on the Battlefield in the Movie. We tend to underestimate what "10,000" soldiers is and looks like, it's actually a pretty massive number of men.

    • @thegreyhavens167

      Well said - and it's a good point about just how BIG 10k people are. That being said, there are no exact numbers ever given in the main books or any of the other works. So the movie just guessed and did what they thought looked cool. I really did about the same... just took a cool guess on what sounded right to me. That being said, safe to say there were a LOT of orcs!!

    You know what I might want to hear about? In the Hobbit, when Bilbo’s hosting the dwarves at his home, at least one of them asks for Coffee. Which leads me to believe that somehow, coffee made it to the Shire. I’d like to know how that’s possible. (My best guess is that Coffee is kinda a delicacy in lands like the Shire, suggesting that Bilbo was pretty well off even before he went to Erebor, which I guess was kinda well known. And that coffee beans were likely grown in faraway lands like Umbar and the Far Harad, most likely by the Haradrim, and possibly they gouged the price of it a lot if they were selling it to lands like Gondor and Rohan, since they were at war with them. Meaning it’d probably be even more expensive in lands like the Shire. So, yeah, bit of a lot of backstory for a small bit of the world, but with Tolkien, I’d expect no less.)

      Ok full transparency, I never even noticed it until just now - but your right. Someone (Balin maybe?) asks for coffee and Gandalf red wine and a few others beer if I remember correctly. That was very neatly explained.. thank you very much for that...
    I'll ask one question if you don't mind.. in the movies we see the great spider stab frodo in the back, which is odd because mithril should have blocked the hit (theoretically). Is there something which explains this moment?

    • @TheHiddenVillages
      @TheHiddenVillages 9 месяцев назад +1

      He is stabbed facing forward so not that back. If you pause at the moment the camera pans through the window to see him lying on the ground as the orcs search he has a stab mark from the blade and above that is a jab scar

    • @thegreyhavens167
      @thegreyhavens167  9 месяцев назад +1

      In the books, it's explained easy enough. The Spider stabs him in the back of the neck.
      In the movies, it seems to me this is just a small mistake. Mithril armor is supposed to be invulnerable to most blades. For example, think of how much harder that spear in the Mines of Moria hit Frodo and still did not go thru, while Frodo was standing next to a wall! So hard to understand how a stinger could go thru when Frodo is standing in the open. \(〇_o)/ So in my opinion, a small mistake.

      @thegreyhavens167 There's a more recent one. The standard British English word is normality. The USA had to be different, and because normality is so hard to spell, it was changed to normalcy - a word that I find revolting. I first came across normalcy in 1999 at university because my politics course had a young lady from New Hampshire. She wanted permission to use the American spelling. I like it less with every passing year. 😊😊🥺❤️🥺😊😊

    I'd love an explanation of Dwarves, as they don't have eternal lives like Elves, but also don't have the gift of men, what happens to Dwarves when they die? and why don't they fear and avoid death like men do? Because I get the Elf-Men dichotomy between eternal and mortal lives but Dwarves seem like this akward inbetween of 2 theologically poignant extremes.
    side note: Does the lesser part of Saurons spirit that wasn't destroyed remain in middle earth? If not does Saurons entire spirit pass into the spirit realm like Saruman and just wander middle earth?

    • @thegreyhavens167
      @thegreyhavens167  9 месяцев назад +1

      Awesome comment! Here are a couple answers for you, or at least how I personally read it:
      * Sauron's spirit: yep, still floating around here somewhere. it's just so weak and puny, however, that it can never react with the physical world again. I like to think of him floating around, angry and yelling at folks, and no one can hear him. 🤣
      * Elves are immortal? Well, as a human: YEP they certainly are from my perspective. But to the elves... not so much. They are trapped forever on the Earth, which has a definitive stop at some point, and when it dies then they all die too. So in their mind they are MORTAL. From their perspective, it's MEN that are immortal... for when we die we sail to another place and aren't trapped here. Maybe in the other place we live forever? While the elves can never escape their doom. 😟
      Anyways, sry so long. i LOVE the idea about doing something on the dwarven afterlife, though I dont know if there is any info on it or not. Gotta do some more reading on it. Thanks for the AWESOME idea!

    Excellent video but I think you underestimate the strength of Mordor, or more precisely, I think you fail to mention some of Sauron's other forces. The numbers at Minas Tirith sound about right, but these only represent the force from Minas Morgul. And there would still be a significant garrison left there and at Cirith Ungol.
    There was another significant force at Dol Guldur, strong enough to attack Lorien a couple of times, along with I expect, the Orcs of Moria and the Misty Mountains. And they could at the same time keep the Woodland Elves fighting defensively at the Battle Under the Trees that occurs simultaneously with the second assault on Lorien.
    The forces at the Morannon would have been stronger than the Minas Morgul force, probably much stronger as Minas Morgul guards a narrow mountain pass requiring a smaller fortification and smaller garrison while being less capable of passing a large army through, or for supplying one. The Morannon is wider, more suitable for invading Moria or for a great host to issue out of.
    So the Orcs and trolls at Minas Tirith would likely be at best a third or less of what Sauron had on hand.

      🤔 well ... gotta take some guesses with populations and such. Tolkien never tells us exactly, but most estimates are in the 1-5 million range. Keep in mind that by LOTR Minas Tirith had almost become a military outpost and other cities had potentially bigger populations. The majority of the population lived along the coast of the sea. So in the Battle with Sauron, Minas Tirith was expected to contribute ~3-4k troops and other cities ~25k troops.... So you can see how the population was segmented.
