  • In this wonderfully engaging first video of the series "Conversations with...", Gary chats with one of the world's most celebrated exponents and pioneers of jazz piano - multi-Grammy award-winning musician Chick Corea.
Sharing stories from their past, and discussing topics ranging from improvisation to the contribution that drums have made to their musical development at the keyboard and vice versa, this is a joyful conversation that provides much insight into the creative process, background and philosophy of these two highly individual, multifaceted and idiosyncratic musicians.

So lovely to see this Gary, a touching memory of the trail blazing musical titan that was Chick, he will continue to be in the hearts of those who love him. In the same way I was so utterly bereft after Allan's passing, I feel the same in relation to Chick, as he too formed the soundtrack to my life. I am of a certain age where I grew up in that incredible era of the mid 60s to late 70s, and Chick was one of the master architects of this genre shattering music. Thanks again Gary, and RIP the timeless Chick Corea.

Thanks for the comment. Yes it’s colossal to lose Chick for all his many, many friends and admirers. He was really a big beast of music for all of us in my generation. Allan Holdsworth too. But I have lost many big beasts who I was extremely close to now - the passing of Jack Bruce was and still is considerably felt. Their ways, messages, philosophies and respective contributions must live on and serve all of us carrying on in this music. And we carry on. Just as they did, but with all of them in our musical heart and imagination.
That was one of two massively enjoyable conversations with dear Chick. The Lockdown Throwdown duet though was such fun, for both of us evidently. That was special since he was so important to me in my early years too, but had also become a very dear friend.
      Thanks again for writing 🎈

Btw on a separate note, I loved what you did with Steve Topping also, and so wish Steve would put out more material in that vein as he seems relatively quiet of late.
And finally, I hope you have forgiven me for my saying, whilst I respected Tony Williams' achievements and talent, I did not enjoy him?! :-) A youthful and foolish comment I posted many years ago on the Fusenet forum, but at least we both agreed we loved Narada! :-)

Great discussion, but I do have one remark. There are more musicians who are very good on two instruments at the same time for example Django Bates, another great musician from England who plays piano and Eb peck horn , both on a high level or Kirk Covington who plays Drums , Keyboards and he sings. And i am sure there are more. But this is very inspiring two of my all time favorite musicians in discussion.

    • @GaryHusbandKeyboardsandDrums

Many thanks! And hey it wouldn’t be anything I would argue Erik. I’m well aware of many artists who have second instruments for sure, and as long as each of those instruments are neck-and-neck in terms of being both developed simultaneously and both as principal avenues of expression, then I guess I would have that in common with them. I think Chick’s point is that perhaps a majority don’t. More common the case one is the principal focus - as in “the one” - and the other a very proficient second.

Great exchange and in the light of Chick Corea's recent passing, such a great record of his recent mindset and how he felt about music! I thought it was particularly interesting when you were both talking about how crucial rhythm is in music performance and that's what gave you the extra energy/ inspiration to play phrases. I always think the fusion movement has kind of abandoned (or perhaps unrealised) the place with the most rhythm, Africa itself - the diaspora countries created great music but that's still not Africa. Maybe it's the perception that the music is not melodic enough. When Chick said that he'd bought a marimba it really made me wonder if he'd listened to or would soon discover Zimbabwean music because I'm sure he would have loved it! If you Wikipedia "Shona Music" there's info about Thomas Mapfumo and others who used melodies originally from mbiras (kalimbas) - but rhythmic and melodic interplay on marimbas and guitars is incredible. I was involved playing bass in some of this music in the UK a few years ago and it was really hard to solve the old problem - where's the one??! It makes sense hearing that you and Chick had musical parents - I think people need to absorb it at some point very early on to create such a natural fluency in something. It’s amazing for example to see this young kid coming through now, Justin-Lee Schultz, father is a jazz guitarist…

Wow - I rarely like to listen to musicians talking about music because, me being the crappiest amateur piano player ever, I often don't understand what the hell musicians are talking about. But I really enjoyed listening to your conversation and was glued to it throughout. That thing you talk about, about being both on it and in it, rhythmically. Sometimes, as a listener, I know that is happening - immediately I thought of how unflashy, players are often so good at that - Ed Thigpen in Oscar Peterson's Trio - he was just so simple and sympathetic and contributed so much without any kind of showmanship - but so damn good. Anyway, great to hear you and Chick talking. Best wishes.

Great insight. Flowing conversation and not getting hung up with knowing what will come out of it. Gary and Chick just had a cool duet. Fantastic thoughts about the rhythmic concepts of different music. Even in the early blues, soloist would sometimes add or drop a beat or bar. It's the feeling and not a number system. Tight rhythm is exciting as well. All is good, just let it go and flow and listen is the best.

Thanks so much Gary for this lovely conversation! I'm still at a loss of Chick'ss passing! Having grown up for 11 years in India (my dad was a diplomat), Trilok Gurtu became a good friend during my last years there in our teens and with the environment we found ourselves in, I started listening to many different types of music while playing bass by ear. Only a year or 2 after my family and I left, I first heard "Light as a feather", and the world of music seemed to suddenly reveal itself as becoming exponentially bigger, and led me effortlessly in to so much more! I was just watching the 1986 live video of his electric band ('Got a match?"), and noticed yours on the right! Glad I did! :) All the best from Germany, where I moved to after 38 years on Manhattan 5 years ago for the love of a good woman! There's always a woman involved! :) Your video was wonderful! There's nothing like a good conversation, especially when it becomes music in itself! :) Stan
