Chick's closing thoughts: “I believe that each one of us is basically responsible for the condition we’re in. Whatever abilities or lack of abilities we find we have, we’ve had a definite hand in bringing that condition about, and we can change it. Each of us has the power to make things happen, and we’re the only ones that can truly cause improvements with ourselves and with music and with our lives. So when you decide to study, when you decide to expand and improve, take one thing at a time, accomplish what you set out to do, set out to do things that you can accomplish and win at, get all distractions and counter intentions out of your way, and go ahead and win. I know you can. What else is there to do anyway?”
To me he had the prettiest technique of all the pianists I ever watched of any genre or style. It was just a joy to watch how his hand movements flowed smoothly and effortlessly through each solo and chordal passage. Rest in power Chick, thanks for the music and the inspiration.
You've got to love the honesty in this video. When John and Tom hear the tune for the first time you just know there's no preparation or fakery going on. Just wonderful to see how they figure it all out.... Also Chick's approach of going with a flow and figuring stuff out later is perhaps the biggest take away for me.
It's fun to watch him work out the glitches. I confess it would take me many days to do each one, which he can do in a few minutes. But the points made are still certainly valid. Love this lesson. RIP Chick
I love his approach to music. For so long i've been extremely terrified of coming back to music with passion because I was giving myself to much to handle at once. Out of all the teachers i've heard, he has the most gentle and calm approach to what can easily become an intimidating endeavor :)
It's awe inspiring how quickly these guys worked through the glitches with ease! Another whole level of Musicianship..! ( When John says that Tom's bass drum is playing a 16th note apart from Chicks hit.. he's feeling 16th subdivisions like it's nothing!) RIP Chick Corea! Thanks Carlos for this post!!
What a fantastic positive cat he was so sweet i am lucky i could have a t shirt signed by him and Miroslav Vitous. Thx is very very useful for learning.

16:36 it sounds like a passage Gonzalo Rubalcaba shredded while Chick was in the audience (every one there was in awe-dience). Intro to "Autumn Leaves" with Jack DeJohnette and John Patitucci.
Neat to see a pro working on something. Gives me some hope that I might one day learn to play. The little piece on weaving patterns starting at 16:44 is amazing, when he says the word "varied", it makes my HAIR hurt. ;-)
the more I watch him play the more I realize how massive his hands are. I can reach maybe a 10th on the piano with difficulty while he can do like an octave and a half with one hand
Too hard there's some overload on the mic. This should be mixed to take down some of the highs. A bit more Bill Evans in compression. (I used to think that his sound came from his Baldwins..no, it's the engineer)

monsterjazzlicks Well, he's known for piano skills and masterful composing/arranging, I never hear much high praise for his singing... lol. Just enjoy the microtonal harmony. ;)
@@monsterjazzlicks In short, microtonal stuff is just notes found in between two keys on a piano; they aren't in the conventional western world's 12TET system of music. So you can have things like a 3/4th sharp note, 1/4 flat, and really anything that isn't an "in-tune" note. It's pretty cool stuff!

the final message is gold. RIP Chick
Not only was Chick Corea one of the greatest musicians of all time, he was also a very deep thinker , and innovator
I love how most of what he says can be applied to life in general.
Exactly!
Incredible, what a demonstration with JP and Tom. Mastery.

Just the first 3 minutes of this is already deeply profound
One of the most inspiring and informative videos about instrument practice/music studying/composing I have ever seen. Chick Corea is something else
He's my inspiration for learning the piano
I wish I had this lesson decades ago!

I still have this VHS which I bought way back in 1987, but haven't been able to watch it since VHS players were discontinued. Thanks for uploading.

I've been a Chick fan since I was a teenager, and Igot this video from one of Chick's concerts. I really love the solos from Patatucci and Brechtlein.
Beautiful 🔥

Chic . you are incredible. Thank you for your insight into the structure of music. I'm a music lover but not a player.. Alas.

He has to be on the spectrum. His brain thinks so fast and in so many directions.
he couldn't be, he's a scientologist.
I get that vibe immediately, I’m on the spectrum, and it’s easy to spot once you know what you’re looking for :)

Lol "These little pieces called children's songs." Yah speak for yourself.
I'd call the majority of today's mainstream music 'children's music' before i called these that.
