His music brought me and my father together all the time and he would tell me the history of it or what not.unfortunately I never got to see him live or better yet meet him but I loved his music and is very dear to me,it hit me like a truck when I found out. My high school music teacher told us an interesting story: Back in the 1980s, Chick had a gig in South Florida, so my teacher went to go see him. He came a little early to the gig and ended up helping Chick and his band set up. Chick of course being a noble and a gentleman thanked him. Fast forward 4 years later, he got to see him again in another gig, and Chick remembered who he was and even remembered his name like he was his long friend. Chick was always a gentleman and you can tell he just had fun when he would play. His energy and his love really showed every time he played. Rest In Peace to the man that inspired millions.
My HS Jazz band played “One More Time, Chuck Corea” my senior year, and that started a hugely impactful obsession with Chuck Mangione, Chick Corea, and Jazz (piano) in general. Thank you for sharing this story.

And then I discovered Spain, and it somehow instantly clicked, it was as simple as that, one song, it unlocked my understanding for an entire world of music. RIP Chick

I'm a singer and he dropped some of Chick's Electric Band albums on me, roundabout '88 or so. Sold! I started piano studying classical, the typical, Chopin, Beethoven etc, but one day my teacher back then, put a Chick Corea sheet on the piano, it was Spain (i didn't understand anything, "whats this rhythm, whats this....?" ). I will never forget what happened next with my mind and that connection to Jazz. Thank you Chick Corea.

My older sister inspired me to listen to Chick Corea years ago and I had the Elektric band on cassette. I find your heartfelt videos the most interesting and think emotions are at the heart of music.
this is one of the biggest losses in music i’ve experienced, he almost feels like a personal mentor in how much he’s inspired me with his absolute genius and mastery
Thanks for teaching us more about him gave me an appreciation for someone who really paved the way for modern jazz I've enjoyed in the last twenty years. RIP Chick.
I have a similar story and met Chick several times and have my collection of photos with him too. The nicest man on Earth. And I can see by the look on your face that you are as stunned as I am. I don''t think anyone was ready for this. Just wow!!
Man this dude was a legend!! He has impacted so many young musicians and I can’t believe he’s gone..Rest in paradise chick 👊🏼👊🏼 your name will live on 🌸🌸🌸🌸
Seen Chick perform a few years ago in Israel alongside bobby Mcferrin... needless to say, that was one of the most influential shows I had the pleasure to experience. Thank you for the incredible music, RIP you legend
Thank you for sharing this! Chick lives on in the music and all the ways he touched our lives! I tuned the piano for a Nonet show he did in Portland, OR in 2000 or 2001. I was concerned - and preemptively embarrassed, because the piano (a Yamaha C7) my shop provided for the show was known as "The Floater", due to the fact the it had been in a river boat lounge for years, and ultimately the boat "had issues" and it was returned to the store with not minimal water damage. Also, this was my first pro concert tuning! I couldn't believe this was the instrument they were going to provide for, not just Chick Corea, but my first piano hero! Anyway, I tune it that afternoon...I sit through the first set (and it blew my mind! It's was just masterful!), and right near the end Chick breaks a string. This totally freaks me out, because i'm still a fairly novice tech, and efficiency isn't something I feel i've mastered yet, in terms of changing strings! (And i've never changed a string with hundreds of people in the same room, theoretically watching me!) Thankfully, I manage it, but i'm so nervous that it's going to slip out if tune... that Chick is going to hate it all through the second set! When the second set ends, I go backstage, and finally meet this giant of the piano. I introduce myself as the tech, and ask if the tuning was alright. He says, "Yeah, the tuning was great! The piano was dog-shit." I will die happy 🙏🎹
Thanks Charles for sharing that amazing and moving story about Chick, I am from Costa Rica, and in this little country they're is a bunch of musicians sad about his death, and we were influenced by him as you were, even being so far away, but his legacy and joy about sharing music will follow many generations to come, blessings thanks for sharing.
Beautiful beautiful story, Charles. I wholly regret not taking the few opportunities I had to see him play. I don't think you can run out of great things to say about Chick as a musician and as a human. RIP.
chik corea got me into jazz, first with reutrn to forever, and then light as a feather. his musical ideas and creativity are second to none. you will be missed chik
I had the privilege to meet him backstage on Playa del Carmen's Jazz Festival in 2014 and was the most humble and kind guy I've ever met. It was around my birthday and he congratulated me and told me to keep the music fire alive and to never stop playing. Him and Keith Jarret were my inspiration to become a pianist. Now Chick is gone and Keith can no longer play, but their music and the impact they had and musicians around the world is deep and everlasting. Rest in peace Maestro Chick.
My all time favorite song I played in high school jazz band was Spain and I still listen to that track to this day. Thank you for sharing your experience with Chick. To hear of his fostering young musicians’ enthusiasm warms my heart.
:: I had the chance to see him twice; once in Martinique where I lived and in Montreal a few years ago. My consolation is when people like you tell their stories so people can go listen to him again and keep his memory alive. Thank you!!!! ::
Those are great memories you’ve got and I can see by the smile on your face how much it means to you. I got to see Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock in London with the two pianos, it was such a special show.
Saw him in a solo concert over 25 years ago in Toronto. Between each piece he would come and sit at the edge of the stage, with his legs hanging over the edge, and tell a story about what he would play. Since we were seated right at the front he made the evening almost feel like it was a private performance. Something we'll always cherish and remember. A giant of performers and an incredible talent who loved to share and teach.
It changed your life. I suspect many of us can say the same. For me it was the friends album. Steve Gadd , Joe Farrell, Ediie Gomez & Chick my God. 42 years of listening and I'm still amazed. Thank for sharing your experience of the master with all of us.
I did not know about Chick Corea before watching this. As of now as I’m watching, i’m coming to a realization of how much he was an influence to you and many other people. May he Rest In Peace. ❤️
Wow that's quite a story! I've been lucky enough to see him at a solo piano concert once . His playing is just insane, not to mention over half of it is improvised. It's so much more real to see and hear it at a live concert. He was really calm and nice, and even though it was a really big venue, he took time to answer questions and give advice to musicians. He invited people to come on stage to play with him. It's crazy how much groundwork he laid in jazz music and beyond. R. I. P. Chick
RIP a legend. Recently was introduced his music and have been hooked ever since. A cool idea would be a Chick Corea Tribute collab. That would be great imo.
Thanks for a great story about Chick! He was one of my formative jazz experiences long ago. Saw Return to Forever when “Romantic Warrior” was just out, and it still ranks as my best concert ever. Magical. He will be missed.
Chick Corea was one of my dad's favorites. Now that my dad's gone, it always breaks my heart when one of his favorite musicians dies. Thanks for sharing your story with us. That's a really cool and unique experience.
First heard chick corea’s playing when i bought Return To Forever’s Romantic Warrior . Totally awesome creative music that I had ever heard. He brought together so many young talents at the time. A titan of jazz and fusion. Like Joe Zawinul, he will be missed .
Hey Charles! Thanks for sharing your story. I've been watching your videos for quite some time, but it was with this video that I've come to realize why you're successful and will continue to be. You are very passionate about what you do, and you share your expertise in a humorous way that can be consumed by the masses on RUclips. Your genuine, child-like enthusiasm for music attracts people to you. What Chick has done with sharing the legacy of jazz/music with previous and the current generations, you will do for the future generations. Thanks for sharing.
Actually choked up watching this. I’ve had some of my favorite musical moments happened at the blue note as well, it’s such an intimate and cozy place (as long as it’s not too packed lol) and I agree with you so much about having so much fun just enjoying music with your friends. That’s what it’s all about
I only just get into Jazz, want to get much deeper into it, and my father is a huge fan of Chick. I wanted to check out his channel and see all of his videos because this music is... amazing. Soulful. Beautiful. Your story is unbelievable! Goodness, I wish I would have met him in real once and just listen. Wow.
Chick's parting message on his website echoes Charles' experience. Chick was grateful to share and have fun with all musicians. Great shock for me seeing him going so quick. Thanks for this contribution.
This news really hit hard for me! A week before lockdown happened due to the virus I got to see Chick Corea live with Trilogy with Christian McBride on bass and Brian Blade on drums. The concert was absolutely mind blowing!
One of my all time favourite jazz pianists, really influenced my playing. I’m so glad so many people loved him as much as I did and had all these amazing experiences with him. May he rest in peace.
I met Chick my freshman year of college too! Can confirm his genuine enthusiasm and total passion for the music. I went to UCLA, and saw him at Royce Hall w/ Gary Burton. After the show (which was obviously amazing), a bunch of my pals and I walked around and waited by the back door for him to come out. He came out full of energy and genuinely excited to see us starstruck freshman Jazz students, and like immediately just jumped into the conversation with us and kicked it for like a good 20 minutes. Such a sweet, talented dude. RIP Chick, you'll be sorely missed.
He's the reason why I started learning jazz back in high school! Love his work and I'm grateful I got to see him perform live once before he left us. Devastating news but he's left with us so much music to enjoy, so I'm grateful.
Incredible story, man. It's heartwarming that these musicians care so much about the music that they're constantly trying help out and get young musicians involved. What an awesome experience.
I can't say that I am super familiar with his music but something about this story moved me to tears. How inspiring. Ill definitely be checking out his material
I had no idea until I found out at a piano lesson today. It was such a shocking thing to lose one of the very few old greats of jazz left. We’re lucky to have educators like you to teach the new generations about the legacies people like him left 🖤🖤🖤 thank you
My dad gave me a cd when I was young. It was Romantic Warrior by Return to Forever. My dad was never a huge fan of Jazz but he insisted that I play this album. He explained to me that he was in downtown Cleveland after working and went to a bar to get a drink. He ended up sitting next to some guy who introduced himself as Chick. He had no idea who Chick was. He told me they ended up talking for 2 hours before Chick had to leave. My dad bought Romantic Warrior the next day. I still love this album more than any of Chick’s others. It helped cement my love for playing jazz piano. I got to meet Chick years later through the Cleveland School of the Arts jazz program. He had an aura of “cool” around him. He talked to me specifically (I was the only piano major at the school) for a couple minutes and, like you said, stressed the importance of carrying on this art. “It doesn’t matter if you only have one person listen, share your art.” I’ll never forget him. Rest In Peace Chick
My older brother had Return to Forever albums on Vinyl, Romantic Warrior, Hymn to the 7th Galaxy, and No Mystery. After hearing them while I was in High School, I researched further into his catalog, and uncovered a wealth of musical jems, his music changed my life, and I made it a priority to learn Jazz fusion. I was lucky enough to see the Five Peace Band, and Return to Forever, some of the best live performances I have experienced. His music and memory will live on... Thank You Chick!!!
You’re a really good soul Charles to take the time to honor Chick and sharing your experience with him and his wife. I truly connected with your expressions of joy, those very special moments in life that mark our lives. Chick’s music was unique; an exceptionally talented musician. May he Rest In Peace while his music will live on.
I'm no musician. Well I play some instruments, but still. Yet this story blew me away in a way that few other eugolies for Chick have. Thank you, Charles, and I'm sorry for your loss.
I went to see The Electric Band on their first European tour. It was a relatively small venue, maybe 200 people present. I was like in the 4th row, getting my mind blown by all the incredible music. So Chick played one of his longer solo's on a keytar, big round of applause, and he returns to his grand piano, and starts to comp the next soloist (I think it was Marienthal). So all eyes and ears are directed towards the soloist, right? While Chick is on the side, being ... well, the side-man for the moment. So I decided then and there to keep focussing on Chick, just to see and hear what he's doing while comping the soloist. Chick was relaxed, playing away but also like scanning the audience. And then he saw me, looking at him. He kept eye contact with me for an uncomfortably long amount of time. Like he singled me out or something. All the while he had his trademark little smile on his face. It was weird, slightly uncomfortable but also an amazing and special experience. I really don't know how else to describe it. RIP. Mr. Corea.
lol that's a funny story. Along with being a musical genius of the highest order, he was also a known Scientologist since 1968, he might've been observing your thetans lol
May he rest in eternal peace. His work shall live on through all whose lives were touched by him. What a blessing you've received by just being exposed to the beauty of who he was. Take care and stay healthy. (Taking an honest moment of silence in remembrance of him... 60 seconds later. Thank you.)
Thank you for sharing, Charles. I’ve been fortunate enough to see and even meet a couple of my musical heroes so I can understand where you’re coming from. Fortunately, for every Chick or Prince or Neil Peart we lose, we gain a Jacob Collier or a DOMi or a Cory Henry :)
I used to watch his piano improv classes on youtube, he was so smooth, how he talked to the camera crew off stage, he taught me how to find my sound. rest in peace
I feel super fortunate to have been able to see Chick perform just last year, only a couple of months before everything got shut down because of COVID. I was a first semester freshman in college and was constantly stressed but was extremely excited to be able to see someone perform live who I had admired for so long. It was such an incredible performance! I’ve had such incredible times playing and listening to Chick’s music. It’s so hard to believe he is gone.
The first time I heard of Chick was 1974 when I was a high school freshman that had just joined our very good high school jazz band. One of the better musicians in that band, the lead alto saxophonist, was carting around the Return to Forever album “Where Have I Known You Before”. I remember him talking excitedly about it and telling us we had to hear it. That was my introduction to jazz, to fusion and to Chick Corea, whom I followed ever since. The saxophonist that was talking excitedly about that album was one Eric Marienthal, who was two years ahead of me in high school, who was already an amazing musician, and who a little over a decade or so later was playing in Chick’s Electrik Band. I gigged with Eric a few times in high school which gave me the chance to say I was his pianist before Chick (I later ran into Eric, and while he remembered me, he had no memory of gigging with me). What a shock to learn of Chick’s death. I had watched him live stream several times in recent months and he acted like a healthy 40-year old. What a loss.
I have a very specific memory with almost all of his albums. He was/is a huge influence for me, and listening to his music is kind of emotional time travel in my own life. RIP Chick.
I had an extremely similar memory of meeting chick at Blue Note, I went upstairs to get my album signed and after he did he asked me questions about me if I’m a musician and what I liked and asked me where I wanted to go to school to play music. It was such an amazing moment for me and I’ll always thank Chick forever for making that connection to me.
i got introduced to a lot of different music as a child because my father gave me his old iPod, and along with all kinds of genres of music, it also had "sea breeze" by chick korea on it, which introdced me to him. his music made a huge impact on my life and especially his "children's songs" collection is one of my favorite albums of all time. rest in piece
I used to play Chick’s Corea children songs for the solo piano and know every single note of His Return to Forever/Three Quartets/Electric Band albums. Probably the most influential jazz pianist of all times. Incredible happy positive energetic artist. Return to forever Chick.
The word "legend" does not even begin to describe Chick. He was more than a genius pianist, more than a genius composer... To me, at least, he was a peak of what I personally strive to be, as a 19 year old pianist and composer. I related to his music and admired him more than... probably any other musician I know. His legacy will live on through splendid contemporary talents like Jacob Collier, Hiromi, Cory Henry and Yohan Kim. I can only look forward to seeing how my generation's music will also reflect his impact. Chick Corea has not died, he has simply Returned to Forever.

this is one of the biggest losses in music i’ve experienced, he almost feels like a personal mentor in how much he’s inspired me with his absolute genius and mastery
Terrible news, Chick was incredible. I suggest anyone reading this to look up his performance with Hiromi -- it's good stuff!
that performance is virtuosity on another level
He was masterful and so influential, what a loss RIP
Thanks for teaching us more about him gave me an appreciation for someone who really paved the way for modern jazz I've enjoyed in the last twenty years. RIP Chick.
I have a similar story and met Chick several times and have my collection of photos with him too. The nicest man on Earth. And I can see by the look on your face that you are as stunned as I am. I don''t think anyone was ready for this. Just wow!!
You lucky bastard. This is an amazing story.
I got to see him and Gary Burton at the UNC Greely Jazz Fest. Life changing.
(And i've never changed a string with hundreds of people in the same room, theoretically watching me!)
Thankfully, I manage it, but i'm so nervous that it's going to slip out if tune... that Chick is going to hate it all through the second set!
When the second set ends, I go backstage, and finally meet this giant of the piano. I introduce myself as the tech, and ask if the tuning was alright. He says, "Yeah, the tuning was great! The piano was dog-shit."
I will die happy 🙏🎹
Thanks Charles for sharing that amazing and moving story about Chick, I am from Costa Rica, and in this little country they're is a bunch of musicians sad about his death, and we were influenced by him as you were, even being so far away, but his legacy and joy about sharing music will follow many generations to come, blessings thanks for sharing.
Beautiful beautiful story, Charles. I wholly regret not taking the few opportunities I had to see him play. I don't think you can run out of great things to say about Chick as a musician and as a human. RIP.
Beautiful tribute, Charles. Keep wonder and gratitude alive and pass it on in Chick’s memory!
chik corea got me into jazz, first with reutrn to forever, and then light as a feather. his musical ideas and creativity are second to none. you will be missed chik
Thanks for sharing that, Chris. Grew up playing his tunes in jazz band in HS. Your story brought it home. RIP Chuck. 🙏
Wow.
Just wanted to let you know that you have been doing an excellent job yourself of fostering enthusiasm for music in the younger generations. Cheers!
thats an amazing story charles. brought a tear to my eye
Chick's parting message on his website echoes Charles' experience. Chick was grateful to share and have fun with all musicians. Great shock for me seeing him going so quick. Thanks for this contribution.
Thank you for your memories. I saw Chick and Herbie in Auckland - grand pianos back-to-back. Phenomenal. ❤
This news really hit hard for me! A week before lockdown happened due to the virus I got to see Chick Corea live with Trilogy with Christian McBride on bass and Brian Blade on drums. The concert was absolutely mind blowing!
I was just thinking about him earlier today and how I should listen to more of his music. RIP Chick
You have been one of the fortunate ones to have cross paths with the a GOAT I’ve always wanted to meet him and will never have that opportunity now.
Thanks for sharing!! A great story. Chick will be missed dearly.
Thanks for sharing that experience. It really puts a human face on this towering musical figure. RIP Chick Corea.
*as an artist, some of my best experiences are another artist* this boi gets it
My older brother had Return to Forever albums on Vinyl, Romantic Warrior, Hymn to the 7th Galaxy, and No Mystery.
He was a great inspiration for me. His music is timeless. What a legend. He will be forever missed. Rip master
Such a generous human being, his music will shine on! 🙏
@@robertkrohn9385 LOL yeah. I don't know though, is that good or bad?
May he rest in eternal peace. His work shall live on through all whose lives were touched by him. What a blessing you've received by just being exposed to the beauty of who he was. Take care and stay healthy. (Taking an honest moment of silence in remembrance of him... 60 seconds later. Thank you.)
This was beautiful man, opening up regardless of the story, was really nice to hear.
What an incredible experience. Thanks for sharing and I appreciate your passion for this music.
I have a very specific memory with almost all of his albums. He was/is a huge influence for me, and listening to his music is kind of emotional time travel in my own life. RIP Chick.
RIP. What a legend.
What an experience. You're very fortunate. RIP Chick.
I used to play Chick’s Corea children songs for the solo piano and know every single note of His Return to Forever/Three Quartets/Electric Band albums. Probably the most influential jazz pianist of all times. Incredible happy positive energetic artist. Return to forever Chick.
Seen Chick back in 1987 when he had the Elektric Band...... awesome show..... RIP Chick and thanks for the memories...
