    I got myself one on June 2 with the new I9 CPU, 32 GB of Ram, 1TB SSD and 4K screen. This is the first Laptop and first new computer in almost 20 years. The only bad thing is no DVD/BluRay drive with it. Got one on order from Amazon. The main reason I got this is to do Photo and Video editing so the DVD drive is a must. Something else that I will have to get in time is a Thunderbolt 4 docking station for it. I am looking a one by Razor from Best Buy. One thing i like about it is that it's fast, I mean fast. The only time I so the fans kick in is when I was streaming 4K Video's or copying Photos from my Phone or Tablet. I do hope that it will last me for a good 7 or 8 years from now.

    I have 2020 model, never again. Left speaker keeps going out, needs complete driver reset in bios every 2 days. Touchpad still sinks in, and has been replaced 3 times. Battery is ok, 5-7 hours on my 1080p model. Panel can’t get text sharp enough, should have been 1440p. Despite excellent performance of 2060maxq and 8 core i7, I would not buy it again. I got a legion 7 16in to replace it and it has none of the issues while still looking somewhat appropriate for lugging into the office.

    No Numpad in a 17" laptop is disappointing.

    • @edwardnoble9897
      @edwardnoble9897 2 года назад +4

      I'm split on this one. I like a numpad occasionally but most of the time I'd rather the keyboard was centered to the screen so it's better that the numpad isn't there. Asus' solution for this was neat, having a numpad on the trackpad if you need it.

    • @cedricmi
      @cedricmi 2 года назад +6

      @@edwardnoble9897 A NumPad is really, really useful for applications such as DAWs or 3D packages. It's possible to purchase an external one, but it should be integrated in a 17" chassis in my opinion. Or why not offer 2 keyboard options?

    • @raymonddsouza8948
      @raymonddsouza8948 2 года назад

      I don't think a numpad would actually fit, unless they started doing weird things like re-sizing keys which would throw off everyone's typing muscle memory from normal keyboards to the laptops's keyboard. I had the 9700 model for a year and when I compared it to an Logi MX-Keys full-sized keyboard layout, there's just not enough width in the chassis to fit the keyboard. Not sure how they could overcome that issue.

    Totally agreed regarding "fashionable" by removing USB A and HDMI ports. It's not very fashionable when you have a dongle connected though.
    I don't buy the "thin" regarding these ports. The 2022 17" LG Gram still has two USB A, two USB C and an HDMI, although I'd prefer it had a full size SD card slot rather than the micro SD slot. Looking forward to your review of this machine when you receive it, I have the 2020 version, never thought I'd like a 17" but it's become my daily driver when travelling & in the office, that 17" 16:10 display!

    No full size USB is silly on a machine this size and price! Dongles are insanely, ridiculously, pointlessly annoying!!! Most laptops don't have a full size SD reader these days and some don't even have a micro (which is unforgivable) so that's something that the XPS has I guess.

    I have 2 pieces of the 9700 model at home, one for me and other for my lady, both with i7-10875H and RTX 2060 Max-Q, mine upgraded to 64 GB RAM, the other one running with 32 GB. I am extremely satisfied with the machines. It has as much performance as I, as a software architect, could ever need. Of course the 12th-gen Intel and RTX 3060 is a huge teaser in terms of performance upgrade, but I think I will stick with the Gen 1 for a few more years down the road. It holds up extremely well in my day-to-day usage.
    I am saying this because the 9720 is even better than the 9700 version, in terms of performance, supposedly they also fixed some of the build-quality issues (wobbly trackpad to name one, which should not occur that often). I highly recommend this machine, it is a serious work horse. Although I do recommend getting a laptop stand elevating the notebook, which greatly improves thermals of the machine - with a laptop stand (and using an external keyboard), the laptop runs ~45 °C on idle in regular room temperature.

I mean when it is possible to get some extra hours of runtime by setting it to 1080p i can enjoy 4k all time with the laptop and quickly change it to 1080 if there's a situation where i need long Batterylife.

    • @bonedatt
      @bonedatt 2 года назад

      Main difference would be the updated internals with regards to Intel chips. Design is mostly unchanged. I have the little brother to your 9700, the 9300. Mine has the 4k UHD screen with 16GB/512GB, core i7 1065G. I don't see myself upgrading for at least four years. Hopefully, the 2026 XPS 13 will have a higher refresh rate, with a better webcam, and Dell would reverse itself and bring back some legacy ports.

A follow up question on batter life: I spend long hours on the laptop online, but pretty much all web based activity, research, streaming stocks lists/charts, trading stocks, lots of youtube research but also movies for a break or an evening, some emailing and chatting, but no high intensity uses like video or music editing or gaming or photoshop and such. With this sort of usage, again long hours though, including evenings and weekends, often at home office but increasingly mobile too, what might my battery life estimate be for the 4k UHD versus the FHD screen choices? Better than what you suggested in the video? How much so? Thanks.

At 17", this laptop is in desktop replacement territory so it's not ridiculous to want something Dell easily fit on my 16" Inspiron. If you're going to take the time to sh!t on my post, you could try to be objective, or move on.

      The 2023 came out and unfortunately nothing has changed: same WIFI, camera resolution poor, and lack of alternative ports. It seems they have paused funding the innovations for while or are focusing on a bigger milestone that is due to come soon...Anyways this was so disappointing as I was about to go and buy 2023 model, but now have serious doubts.

    Well wondering what quality control problems are waiting for the fools that would spend 2800 for a Dell. Quality issues every year they have made the 17.

    XPS 15 and 17 are essentially irrelevant now. MacBook Pro 14 and 16 have more ports, better battery life, and superior speakers. MSI Creator Z16P and Z17 have better cooling, higher refresh rate with same color accuracy, and 100W 3080 Ti. Razer Blade Pro 17 has the good (for Windows standards) speakers, 1080p webcam, MUX switch, and 4K screen option. Zephyrus G15 and M16 have higher refresh rate, better GPUs, MUX switch, and much better screen response time. Legion Slim 7 gets 100% Adobe RGB miniLED and better cooling.

    Why that hype to glossy displays??? I hate them. Why not give Matte displays ?

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  2 года назад

      The FHD display is matte, I believe. Glossy increases the sense of contrast (it looks higher contrast, doesn't mean it is). Glossy is popular with consumers, I'm told.

    Thanks for a great video! Just a small correction, you say 4800MHz. Its actually 4800MT/s. The frequency and transfer rate isnt the same. On DDR4 the transfer rate was double of the frequency. So a 3200MT/s DDR4 memory would have 1600MHz. It seems to be the same for DDR5.
