I got myself one on June 2 with the new I9 CPU, 32 GB of Ram, 1TB SSD and 4K screen. This is the first Laptop and first new computer in almost 20 years. The only bad thing is no DVD/BluRay drive with it. Got one on order from Amazon. The main reason I got this is to do Photo and Video editing so the DVD drive is a must. Something else that I will have to get in time is a Thunderbolt 4 docking station for it. I am looking a one by Razor from Best Buy. One thing i like about it is that it's fast, I mean fast. The only time I so the fans kick in is when I was streaming 4K Video's or copying Photos from my Phone or Tablet. I do hope that it will last me for a good 7 or 8 years from now.
I have 2020 model, never again. Left speaker keeps going out, needs complete driver reset in bios every 2 days. Touchpad still sinks in, and has been replaced 3 times. Battery is ok, 5-7 hours on my 1080p model. Panel can’t get text sharp enough, should have been 1440p. Despite excellent performance of 2060maxq and 8 core i7, I would not buy it again. I got a legion 7 16in to replace it and it has none of the issues while still looking somewhat appropriate for lugging into the office.
I'm split on this one. I like a numpad occasionally but most of the time I'd rather the keyboard was centered to the screen so it's better that the numpad isn't there. Asus' solution for this was neat, having a numpad on the trackpad if you need it.
@@edwardnoble9897 A NumPad is really, really useful for applications such as DAWs or 3D packages. It's possible to purchase an external one, but it should be integrated in a 17" chassis in my opinion. Or why not offer 2 keyboard options?
I don't think a numpad would actually fit, unless they started doing weird things like re-sizing keys which would throw off everyone's typing muscle memory from normal keyboards to the laptops's keyboard. I had the 9700 model for a year and when I compared it to an Logi MX-Keys full-sized keyboard layout, there's just not enough width in the chassis to fit the keyboard. Not sure how they could overcome that issue.
Totally agreed regarding "fashionable" by removing USB A and HDMI ports. It's not very fashionable when you have a dongle connected though. I don't buy the "thin" regarding these ports. The 2022 17" LG Gram still has two USB A, two USB C and an HDMI, although I'd prefer it had a full size SD card slot rather than the micro SD slot. Looking forward to your review of this machine when you receive it, I have the 2020 version, never thought I'd like a 17" but it's become my daily driver when travelling & in the office, that 17" 16:10 display!
No full size USB is silly on a machine this size and price! Dongles are insanely, ridiculously, pointlessly annoying!!! Most laptops don't have a full size SD reader these days and some don't even have a micro (which is unforgivable) so that's something that the XPS has I guess.
I have 2 pieces of the 9700 model at home, one for me and other for my lady, both with i7-10875H and RTX 2060 Max-Q, mine upgraded to 64 GB RAM, the other one running with 32 GB. I am extremely satisfied with the machines. It has as much performance as I, as a software architect, could ever need. Of course the 12th-gen Intel and RTX 3060 is a huge teaser in terms of performance upgrade, but I think I will stick with the Gen 1 for a few more years down the road. It holds up extremely well in my day-to-day usage. I am saying this because the 9720 is even better than the 9700 version, in terms of performance, supposedly they also fixed some of the build-quality issues (wobbly trackpad to name one, which should not occur that often). I highly recommend this machine, it is a serious work horse. Although I do recommend getting a laptop stand elevating the notebook, which greatly improves thermals of the machine - with a laptop stand (and using an external keyboard), the laptop runs ~45 °C on idle in regular room temperature.

Wonderfull review. But i still got one question: How is the Batterylife with the 4k screen when it is set to an 1080p resolution? And how will it compare to the XPS with the native 1080p Display? I mean when it is possible to get some extra hours of runtime by setting it to 1080p i can enjoy 4k all time with the laptop and quickly change it to 1080 if there's a situation where i need long Batterylife.
The version without a dedicated GPU also comes with a smaller battery. I tried to configure one with an i7 and no dgpu (which also didn't work). Thanks for a great video! Just a small correction, you say 4800MHz. Its actually 4800MT/s. The frequency and transfer rate isnt the same. On DDR4 the transfer rate was double of the frequency. So a 3200MT/s DDR4 memory would have 1600MHz. It seems to be the same for DDR5.
Thanks....
3060 60W... Shocking... Bloody Dell... All of this just for around $3000 😬
