@harlowsplace I don't remember the dance being cut short like that! I see your point completely. It is not possible that the video was edited after it was posted, is it? It was 4 years ago that I watched it. I can't recall if I watched the entire dance routine or not.
Cagney, was an unbelievable triple threat! HE played it all. There will never be another like him. He even did Drana, like the wonderful story of Lon Chaney in Man of a thousand faces...hes my Idol, Lucky John Travoltas too but John made it a point to meet him. Cagney. Was known as the perfect gentleman to all of his peers, 100% man.💖
He was a talented dancer. He was shorter than most of his leading ladies so he had to wear lifts in his shoes to be taller. In other words he danced in heels!
@@pentuplove6542 what's the name of his "Cohan " movie ? You mean Yankee Doodle Dandy ? Yes I've seen it. Actually his singing was passable.....but his dancing is on a level with Fred Astaire. Cagney should have had A LOT more "dance movies" like Astaire.
Her 1920s dress could be worn in 2020. Cagney danced like no one else..looked like he was on his tippy toes.. And had springs in his shoes. Very enjoyable. Reputedly he was an all round good family man.
Can the Cag dance?! Damn right! The best! If you haven’t. Check him in the Footlight Parade movie, the best outside of Yankee Doodle Dandy. As I recall, in later life, the only ones of his movies Cagney liked to watch were those in which he danced! Of course there’s the duet dance with Bob Hope in Seven Little Foys, and when he did it, he was “no spring chicken” as the old folks used to say! But Cagney, as Orson Welles said, “never did anything false.” Every move was honest and expressive, dancing or not!!
I've seen that movie. Cagney wasn't the lead. He just had a small part. I bet Cagney improvised some dancing in this scene. He really stood out. The real romantic lead was a tall, good looking guy named Grant Withers whose career just kept going down hill until he mostly played heavies.
Wasn't Grant Withers Loretta Youngs first husband? For being such a devout Catholic, she sure got around. And married repeatedly.... I liked her but she really was a hypocrite.
@@poorthing I don't know what you mean by "she sure got around". yes, she eloped with Withers at age 17 but must've realized she was too young and the marriage was anulled in 1931. She had an affair with Clark Gable in 1934 and had a child by him which was kept secret in order to protect her career. She later married a businessman named Tom Lewis and her out of wedlock daughter didn't know until adulthood that Lewis wasn't her real father. Couldn't have been a strong Catholic because she later divorced him.

Seems he’s generally remembered most for his gangster roles today, if he’s remembered at all by the younger generations alive today. He is totally underrated as being one of the most diversely talented entertainers Hollywood and/or Broadway has ever known. His dancing is just simply A+ work. He rivals Astaire and Gene Kelly. Love James Cagney! He was like a human firecracker of energy when he started dancing! What a talented man! And gorgeous with it xx
Gosh! he was fast and very nimble on his feet there!! I'm so surprised!!
he was very graceful and so quick on his feet
He was so light on his feet.
He was so smooth on his feet when he danced. When he walked he had rhythm and style.
Cagney was a real natural.. great actor great dancer ! Marvouls clip..thanks for sharing!
God, he was amazing
This is one of the cleverest dancing clips I've ever seen...Cagney was hilarious!!

The best ever dancer since FRED Astaire! BRAVO!
Cagney just Floats when he dances
Undoubtedly the greatest 'hoofer' to ever hit the floor. Forget Fred Astaire and the rest....Cagney had them all beat!!!
Mr. Cagney in his element.
James Cagney great actor an dancer and the movie I like him best Yankee Doodle dandy .
He was so light on his feet, brill. It was so funny the way he swings her around !
