This single changed my entire musical taste - it came at the height of the Goth period in UK music and the video for this was art! I just wish they had brought this into the next Duran album. Duran are good when they are slightly dark. This album was about games being played for very dark ends. I had forgotten how bloody brilliant this was.
wow, i so love this and too much to say here.....the promise deserve a close reading, one of the best lyrics SLB produced. and the transition between rose arcana to the promise is really important , also remembering the name arcadia, as a promise to harmony, and calming of fears. i remember checking what is arcana, and learning that it is a sort of a knowledge for the few, or selected. which is kept a mystery or unknown to the rest. notice that it had dark ,almost pilgrimage feel to it. then comes the promise which is about politicians {?) who are promises dealers, playing on what is known and what is hidden....in the fury of war. but also there are some promise of uprising against. now the heaven that hide in the eye.....is not romantic, but the very possibility of peace. musically, you were spot on: the possible harmony comes from musical sentences that are "talking between instruments", sometimes finishes the sentence another instrument started.
Yeah, I realized after shooting this that the adjective "arcane" was a massive clue I should have converted into "Arcana." Because "arcane" is indeed about esoteric, rarefied forms of knowledge.
Andy Mackay's saxophone and oboe contributions to So Red the Rose are amazing. If you listen to the synthesizer parts on "The Promise" and then listen to all of Roxy Music's album Avalon, you will hear how much Roxy Music influenced Duran Duran. Mark Egan's fretless bass playing on "The Promise" is inspiring.
The Promise is also my favorite song on this album. I’ve heard Simon duet with numerous artists of all genres throughout the years, but this is one of the best examples of how well his voice just melts into someone else’s. He literally can duet with anyone, including himself! But just a side note, most of Simon’s backing layering vocals is him singing in at least three different deviations, so you are hearing four Simons…the main vocals & the backing vocals, at least in the studio recordings. He is a genius with harmonizing with himself, but it’s never lost live with the back up singers they choose in concerts instead, which again, shows the power of the songs themselves. On these side projects, Simon doesn’t loop as much (& sometimes goes completely acoustic on his solo projects)….it’s why Arcadia has a different Simon sound, it’s not as harmony heavy, but it was also a VERY expensively made album with a lot of production.
Yes love so much how Simon can sing with so many different voices in the same track. He can magically catch me away from all around, magnetic and inspiring
Rose Arcana reference: In the making of the videos documentary they released on VHS and was included as a DVD on the remastered set, Nick Rhodes name checks artist Jean Coctaeu as a visual inspiration on the video "Election Day" specifically the film "La Belle Et La Bete" Beauty and The Beast. The album name is a homage to that story, as the Beast has a rose that seals his destiny in it, so the album instrumental was named after that too. If u get a chance, try and watch it, it's a beautiful film and hasn't been bettered in it's telling of the story.
Right on, thank you so much! And yes, I've fallen in love with this group recently (even though I did know and enjoy a few of their songs as a kid in the '80s). Cheers for the positive comment and welcome to the journey! :)
This is a stunning song! I was a JT girl back in the day and went more to power station and that rock sound. I did like Election Day but didn't really listen to the album until now with you 😀 Looking forward to Lady Ice as that seems to be a fave on the comments!
Makes sense, and I know a few others here have said they were more into Power Station at the time too. Can't wait to get that, should be soon! And thanks for coming on this particular journey even if the album didn't stand out to you back in the day. Means a lot!
Isn't it funny how our teen years move & shapes us!?? I'm much more keen to listen to rock music, but because I'm a "Simon girl" I went with Arcadia back then haha still love this album ❤️❤️
@@suzannecorona6098 haha I know right! I was so in love with JT, and he looked such a babe on the live aid gig! But now looking back at old footage I am loving Simon too! So glad they kept going and are now better than ever ❤
The extended version of Rose Arcana is my favorite on the album. The Promise is my favorite with lyrics. (edit) I love Sting's backing vocals on The Promise.
Yes, it's funny because I wasn't sure which song Sting was on even though a few people had mentioned he shows up on this album (my booklet doesn't list specific credits for the songs, only general guest credits). But once I heard that second voice, you can see I realized pretty quickly that had to be Sting. And cool, I really need to hear the extended mix of "Rose Arcana," then! (Izzy, I need your help, brother!) Also I didn't mention it during the reaction but I think "The Promise" is the one Herbie Hancock is on, too.
@@mattsnider2667 I've not had my vinyl collection for a few years now, but I am sure that is said who was the guest on which song on the sleeve. I can't remember for sure. I am also not sure now where I had the extended version of Rose Arcana. Maybe I had a 7" single and it was a b-side.
You should get a copy of some side projects called , 1. "Neurotic Outsiders". which had 2 members of guns n roses , steve johns from sex pistols and john taylor form duran duran. 2. Rod stewarts album , "out of order" produced by Andy taylor of duran duran and powerstation and bernard edwards from chic and powerstation. Andy played guitar on 3 songs including a smash hit forever young. 3.Andy taylor`s solo album thunder. 4.Johntaylor`s solo album feelings are good and other lies. 5.Dark circles by The devils, nick rhodes duran duran keyboard player side project with the original duran duran vocalist stephen duffy. This is a pretty solid album you will be surprised.
Yo, thanks for this! I am in the process of reacting to the Devils album (I've reacted to the first two songs already), but I'll try to get some of those other albums at some point. Cheers!
This album wow wow wow wow wow 🤩 bloody awesome yes Matt Simon sings over sting and sting sings over Simon!!!! TV mania yes as been released on cd got it at last I only ad it on MP3!!! Record company BMG av now the copyrights av TV mania and all the other 4 which av been released as well!!! Another side kick project nick Rhodes mastermind wow wow wow wow did a cd album called the devil's with the original singer of 1978 before Simon lebon joined Steven tin tin Duffy who as done this amazing album with nick Rhodes which again I've got different versions of it!!!! Very hard to get it now try eBay its proper 80s vibes it's brilliant awesome 👌👍
I guess due to the distinctive guitar, it very much sounds what Gilmour recorded with Bryan Ferry around that time, especially "Is your love strong enough". maybe this is what Roxy Music would've sounded like if they did another album after Avalon (instead of the meh "Explorers" LP without Ferry)
They had to edit Rose Arcana to fit the vinyl capacity, the full version was on the B-side of The Promise and the recent extended version of the album. I can send u a copy if u want 😉 The full version is very much like an outtake from Japan's Tin Drum album, especially a track called "Canton".
Haha, I just commented in a reply to someone else that I may have to lean on you for the extended mix of "Rose Arcana." I would love to hear and react to that if you're willing to send it over. :) And nice, the more comparisons like that I hear, the more I need to hear Japan at some point.
and i asked you to do tv mania!!!! but ok.....izzy is cool.....so ok 🤣🤣🤣🤣 i guess izzy and i have some simmilar taste cause i understood he asked for madazaland too. but i want it to be recorded for next generations i also asked for it 😊😊
I've heard some of Herbie's tunes (I have a Greatest Hits CD I just found recently), but I don't know his sound well enough to distinguish here (at least not yet!).
You said it - this was CREATIVITY. It's rare and should be savoured.
ok third listening in a row....like i can't stop!!!! and am i the only one who imagine immediatly the violin of el diablo?!!!
Definitely not.
A Perfect Storm
Also dave Gilmour from pink floyd is on guitar.
I wonder how the Pink Floyd fans reacted to that when they found out I can't imagine many of them were Duran Duran fans
Agreed the Promise is so underrated
This song is just perfect to me. Simon and Sting also sang together in Band Aid, their voices sound great.
First stumbled across this song summer of last year on a Duran Duran compilation CD my dad had made. Absolutely loved it

Guitars on promise by David Gilmour from pink floyd.

The melody, the music and the lyrics speaking of a deep sadness for empty promises make this song a masterpiece!
Its David Gilmore on guitar ( Pink Floyd)
I think the sax is Andy Mackay from Roxy Music. He definitely was on Election Day and appears in the extended video version (of Election Day)
