My CPU ran hot at idle - here's what I did to fix it

- My CPU was running incredibly hot at idle, and I had no idea why. I checked many software apps, checked the hardware, and even dived into the BIOS. Nothing worked, until I used this motherboard program.

Wow. 60c idle is horrific. That's what mine's doing and it just isn't right. A water cooled CPU at idle should be 40c at most, although even that's on the high end. I also have a 2 year old h100iv2 and thinking of replacing it to see if that's the issue. Although it worked fine on my 6800k, not so much on my 10700k apparently.

Conflicting software that are designed around the same thing I.e the example in the video I run icue and Ai Suite 3 for ASUS RoG motherboard and since installing icue my pc has been running different, it seems to have conflicting idle processes.
I woke up today to find my cpu running at 90 degrees for no assertable reason as the pc was in idle or sleep.
It seems that one of these programs are preventing the OS from going into idle so the os is still active but no responsive (cannot bring it out of sleep because it’s a pending action so the power remains on throughout the pc) but the fans turn off and become passive.
If you have conflicting software this can create this unique problem, I would suggest running whatever your motherboard comes with as opposed to software designated by your components as it realistically does the same job.
Hey hector i just need to install the msi gaming app and set it to OC is that it??

for some reason when I use a programm like prime95 my cpu gets to 69 degres on 100% load, which is good tbh, but when I play games, where my cpu's load is around 20-50, it still gets as high as it gets under 100%....idk what to do even undervoltet but my cpu gets hotter in games

have you ever tested that cpu with another motherboard ?
what really helped me was limited the power of my CPU. I lowered it to 85% power usage and my temp went from 60c to 40c idle and when under load it stayed around 60c. I didn't see any difference in frame rate or anything. It did lower of Clock speed from 4000MHz to 3100MHz so it's probably not the best fix but it did keep my temp a lot lower. (AMD Ryzen 3700x)

this is why unless its my antivirus on windows that i know needs to run, i don't allow anything else on windows to startup, to me that's a waste of my time waiting on that other stuff to load, i will open programs like steam and discord, maybe video editing software when i need them, that's why its very important whenever you install new software on windows check the startup list for any extra services that may be running and disable them.
i just made a custom built PC and the AIO cooler preapplied thermal paste smeared and it didnt apply right so i just reapplied new thermal paste on my Ryzen 9 7000x and my idle temps are at least 45*C rn is that a good idle temp?
my maxium temp says 95*C also noticing when i move my mouse around it jumps at least 7 - 10 degrees
45 is still a bit high for idle, unless your whole house is still a bit warm, like Summer time. Or do you have a CPU that runs hot normally? Since I switched to air cooling, I usually have 30-35 C for idle temps on two different intel CPUs.
Dude. Same exact to the tea. What’s happening to me rn. Upgraded to a msi b550 from a b450 asus board. Starting having temp problems. Identical to yours. There’s the msi gaming app and the dragon center. Which one do i use. And do you select to run on start Up
Did you ever figure this out? I just installed a new b550 tomahawk, and my cpu sits at 60c idle.
My temps went up after msi dragon.. I was using msi center
Setting maximum processor percentage from 100% to 99% fixed everything and cooled my cpu so much. Something fishy must've been going on with the oc settings idk.
Thank you so much for this comment! Mine was running at 60C idle and going up to 91C on load, after setting the maximum percentage to 98% the temps instantly went down from 60C to 38C
I'm commenting again to say that although this really solved my temps problem, I noticed that my processor won't boost itself to higher frequencies and will keep running on base 3.8Ghz even under load (instead of boosting till 4.7Ghz)
Did you have this problem as well?
@@LennethValky19 i did this as well and even though my ryzen 5 5600x went from around 60c with on discord, chrome and some other programs, down to 44c, it does underclock your cpu and limit the amount of power for it. I have a smilar find with MSI program; Dragon Center. Oh gosh! Whenever I decrase the CPU FAN speed below %45 manually with a fan profile - curve (well everyone likes silent computer on idle right?), cpu temp starts jumping around on idle like 38 degrees C to 72 degrees C in really short intervals going up and down, this also making all the case fans ramping up and down! I've discovered this in the hard way with a brand new 3600 cpu fresh out of the box, I even considered there would be a problem with the cpu physically. In a nut shell, MSI programs really act up! Better be carefull. BTW the CPU is running @4.0ghz fixed on all cores with 1.12V vCore on Artic Freezer 2 240 AIO and it's now idling at 37 degrees C with the aio set to exactly %45. When it's %44, cpu constantly rises up to 70ish degrees! Not logical mate!

I have the same issue. only at 20% load as well.
I have gigabyte z370 and it runs at 100c idle unless I stay in bios for 5 minutes. I’ll try the bloatware next
What CPU cooler do you have? I also messed with that in another video.
Wtf I closed down intel driver software and my cpu dropped from 55 to 33
how do you close down intel driver
wtf mine just did to just from 45 to 33
Krogholm100 what’s intel driver
Actually I found out that discord had a folder it tried to update from and that was my issue
@@Krogholm100 what?
I dont have a msi motherboard, having the same issue though, but my idle temp is 115oC which is insane
lol imagine
SHEESH mines at 60 idle
I got a gigabyte motherboard Elite AC it runs about 51.52 Celcius sometimes 50 Celsius but I'm running a i-710 Ka
My i7 6700 is running on 100 degrees anyone help me
So i have a ryzen 5 3600 cpu and rx580 gpu idle is around 32-34 but when i launch fortnite (yes fortnite😂) i get all the way up to 63-65 before playing and before i would only got 60max before playing, idk whats causing this it was out of no where
So i found the reason if anyone has this problem for fortnite make sure on graphics post processing is all the way off it can really heat up your pc for some reason
BRO YOU SAVED MY LIFE! I had this program called Dragon Center, it booted up into 'GAME MODE' which raised my idle temp to 60.
lol thank you for this comment. I disabled that and temps are stable at 40 celcius, before when it was on they would go up to 75 for no reason and i have a z73 kraken so i knew its not a problem with my cooler for sure
hell ya you are the best there was a program schost.something that was using 50% of my cpu and i had like 98 °F after ending that program from task manager now i have like 50 °F
thanks man
Just paid for the ryzen 9 5950x and msi 550 and geek squad built, they said I need a liquid cooler as it runs hot and to not do extended gaming til I get t. I said no problem ordered on Amazon before leaving best buy. At best buy my pc wouldn't load because of the heat, they said they had it on all day which made sense, so I was like cool ill take it home. Well it wouldn't get oast bios at home. Kept freezing on auto repair. Then I was like ok I'll let it cool overnight. I waited 14 hours to try again. Now it won't even show on my screen. Unplugged gpu and plugged into mobo, same thing. So it's not my gpu. And a brand new out the box msi and ryzen 9. I'm furious now. I'm waiting til they open in an hour to go rip them a new one. I spent over $1k and they gave me a pc I can't even boot up.
bro i kept all my computer parts open to air is that okay
Yes, as long as it's not powered on because the CPU needs something to cool it down. It will get too hot and either shut down or melt down.
@I Make Reddit Users Cry
Yes its perfectly fine because you will get more air thru and the cpu cant melt down because there is something called air cooling so why does air cooling exist when your cpu will be killed with it huh? whats your excuse now
@@falc0n2222 wrong. there is air flow. when cooler air gets put in it will cool the cpu and then another fan on the other side will pull it out. If its open it will be less effective.
@@plasmafrog8238 yea less effective but melt down?? Talk about exaggeration
@OneMoreDown uh yeah I leave my glass off the side of my tower 24/7 because of my build, it gets hot af if I put the glass on it (the radiator blows into the tower)
my cpu is around 90-100 idle, no problems
thanks man, I closed epic games and my CPU went from 80 to 43 degrees in a minute. apparently epic games can sometimes cause this issue
That’s what happened with my new pc I just built
Help my gpu is always stuck at 1506MHz and 4000 au memory pls help i didnt do anything in nvida control panel and my gpu in idle is at 55c° pls someone help! : (

I have a brand new PC I built and it won't go under 89c. I don't understand
Did you build it yourself or buy it brand new?
