Totally brilliant! I was able to revive my mother's old Viking 21 using your video, it's purring like a kitten now. You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. Much appreciation.
I just served first time ever (by my own hands) my Husqvarna Cl 21 with your help. The longer band required replacement and it was a bit work to find one. With luck one lady gave away a similar, half emptied machine in the city nearby. I oiled my machine as well and now it purrs so nicely. Thank you and greetings from Finland!
1981 - I walked into a sewing machine shop in Howick; "I'm after a machine, don't care how old if it works, for mending duty." "OK, I'll keep an eye open." A few days later and it's "Colin, I've got your machine." In I went and he seats himself behind this green machine that was purring away really slowly; a click and it took off at what seemed like 3000rpm, with virtually no noise! (Mum's Bernina Rekord of 1957 noisy and slow by comparison) "That's way too good for me!" "Have you got $120?" So I coughed up the dough and left with this rather hefty machine before he could change his mind. It is virtually identical to the machine in your video and condition-wise, if you can imagine a pampered 2 year old car offered for sale after grooming, that's what I got. I'm now 75 and will only part with it when I kick the bucket! Col, Bay of Islands.
Thank you so much. There are people who really help out in sharing knowledge. Most of the people showing machines are always hiding knowledge.. like Scott from CowCountryVintageSewing.. guy always says his machines are the best...come on the machines are only as good as they were designed. In this video you really help out the sewing community for this particular machine. Owe some on you part.. truly thank you.
The waer on this machine in the video is visible but it still does the job. I learnt how to sew on my mothers "Crocodile" as we call them here in Sweden and was very sad as she changed is for a newer machine. I have now bough one for myself and it is very nice to sew on. The machine i bought for 35 USD was with all the extras but did not work properly. Some oil later the machine was back in working order with no extra maintenace needed. Amazing quality. The gearbox for slower and more powerful sewing is a feature that i really like but lacks on newer machines. The automatic disengagement of the machine when vinding the bobbin is also one step ahead of many machines even today. I think the quality of this machines is at the pinnacle of machanic sewing machines. Bernina and Pfaff have thier own take on failfree high quality, undestructable machines from the same period, but i find the "anti jamming feature" on the Husqvarna one point above the rest. The only downside is that the Zig-Zag is not especially wide compared to modern machines. But you can´t have it all for 35 USD. (Going rate for a working machine like this in Sweden is about 150 USD.)
Nostalgic memories of this pretty machine! Dad had bought it in 1963 after its life as a show piece at a dealer. From the beginning I was ultra interested in this electrical marvel, like you called it. All of us kids were allowed to sew on it early on, like at 8 yrs. One day mum revealed that you can sew an array of decorative stitches on it. By letting me figure everything out by myself, it became a lesson well learned. The most amazing thing is the straight / zigzag presser foot. I hope everybody had the opportunity to experience it. It gives multiple possibilities to align stitching adjusting one’s gaze on the different notches between the ’toes’. Amazing piece really. Thanks for this video, I'll save the link for the future! edit: year of purchase.
It's so cool to see that not only husqvarna's gardening tools has spread around the globe but also these (in sweden) classic green sewing machines. I recently bought my own CL 21 from a local sewing machine shop since I grew up using the very same machine. I've not had the chance to use it a lot yet but I know it was a well made investment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
This video was wonderful and a huge help in guiding me in the maintenance and cleaning of a 21E that I found out on the street for trash pickup with the pedal, bobbins and extra feet. Looked at the belts and the motor brushes which were all fine. Also had someone check the electrical which was also good and after an oiling its running very well with a new needle and thread. The plastic covers are pretty cracked but overall a neat find that now has a new home. Again Thanks so much! Cheers from Germany
Thanks for this video! I have the Husqvarna 19E, wonderful machine, and now I was able to understand and adjust the tension of the belt. Overall video is well made and well explained. God bless you!
Thank you so much for this video. With this video and the one where you explain how it works, you convinced me I had to purchase it, while my Bernina 1530 is in a complicated repair process. I absolutely love it. Thank you.
@@InStitches Between yesterday and now, I was doing some test sewing, and the capacitor blew (due to bad luck or some kind of idiocy on my part, I don't know). Thanks to your video, I understood what had happened and didn't panic. :) I'm looking for replacements, but I can't find anything that looks the same. Do you have any advice for finding a replacement?
I'm another who found a thrown -out machine in the street complete with everything. Could hardly believe my luck. Just overjoyed. Though unfamiliar with this machine i could see immediately its high quality. After almost 40 years with the little Elna portable, never a comfy machine, my 'new' 21e is a serious upgrade. This is a really superb vid. Many many thanks. It's great to see stuff in real time, with sometimes several attempts to do things. So much in mechanics is physical-like screw tensioning, reaching into tight spaces, moving things against resistance, jiggling and maneuvering tricky bits to fit. Orientation. The nature of the materials. Just excellent. A small question: if oil gets on the white gears is it a problem?
@downey2294 its been such a long time. In the end I just cleaned it up and asked an sewing machine repairman, who said as long it's not broken. In most parts of the world they are replacing old parts to sewing machines. So there should be plenty to choose from. Try any Chinese marketplace like Temu, and they have plenty to choose from as long as you follow the measurements.
Just got one, they are insanely good, this mashine is from 1953,and still going strong, overrule all other mashine brands, thats for sure Bernina, dosent even coome near this mashined when it comes to quality..so lets sew😊😊👍👍
I beg to differ on your view on Bernina. Sure Husqvarna's from this period are very good machines. But so are Bernina's. I would like to hear why you dislike Bernina.
Thank you a lot for your great vids about old Husqvarna machines! I have a H Automatic 21 A and I just oiled and cleaned it according to the manual and your video. There are still couple of problems I have faced that I couldn't solve. First, the zigzag.... the needle doesn't move sideways fast enough. Therefore, in order to sew zigzag I have to run the machine slowly and keep the width at 4. I have tried to figure where the problem is but I haven't succeeded. Second, now I use weird words, since I don't remember what the parts truly are in English... so second, the little knob that should be turned to the right, half turn to 6 o'clock, in order to sew buttons or embroidery or freestyle. To keep the teeth down and be able to move the fabric wherever I want to. That know only moves a bit, around to 1 or 2 o'clock. I've had the plate in the bottom open, so I have seen the small plate that hits the thin bar when ever I turn that knob, but I simply don't get it, where the problem is. Any suggestions? I would take the machine to the service but I don't think they know much about these machines anymore....
Try with penetrating oil on the parts that moves when the needle moves, 5-56 or like. When everything works at it should just lube it again with regular sewing machine oil.
Hermosa, yo la consegui en una venta de garage, pero no tiene manual, ni los discos para puntadas decorativas, solo tiene un carretel, soy de argentina, espero encontrar los faltantes, gracias muy buena demostración!! 👍🏼
I was so thankful for this video since I solved the problem with the handwheel not moving (but I could still sew using the pedal). Now the handwheel works BUT I cannot sew with the pedal anymore... I opened it and the belt (long/main one) doesn't move at all when I press the pedal. I just hear the sound of the motor. I checked multiple times by "toggling" the bobbin on and off and the bobbin belt works, but not the main belt... What to do? :(
This was so helpful I have a needle out of sorts and now I know how to fix it, thanks for the video and the previous one on what the machine can do Instructional also so helpful . My machine did not come with manual or that cool stitch wheel help guide , if you have any extras of those I would buy it. Once again thanks I learned a lot!
Hi! Thanks a lot for the very helpful video. I came out to get a marvelous Husqvarna 21, now that it is repaired I would like to fin gear cams to complete the set: I am looking for cams A and B, and am also interested in D and E if someone doesn't use them! Do you know where I could find such parts? None on eBay at the time being
Hi there, loved your video. I, like many others, have inherited my machine from my mother-in-law. And I do not have instructions so your video on how to thread the bobbin and thread the machine was most helpful. Everything seems to be working on this machine other than it does not advance the fabric. Do you have any ideas on why the fabric is not advancing and just stays in place as the machine starts the stitch?
PLEASE HELP: Hi, and thanks for a great and very informative video. I wonder if you could use your tons of experience to help me sort out a few questions. I recently picked up a Husqvarna Classic 21e at a flea marked (didn´t know anything about it at the time) for about $15 (blood price, I know) . It virtually looks like it´s been purchased as a wedding gift, tried and then left in a closet for 60 years (which is probably pretty close to the truth). Finish looks brand new, inside bits and bobs look unused apart from a little lint under the stitch plate and all the woolen oil pad thingies are bone dry. In short, pretty darn close to mint condition. NOW:Lately I´ve tried to find out as much as I can about this little gem. What baffles me is that all the american versions of this machine (the Vikings 21E) seem to be much more powerful than the european versions (Husqvarna Electric 21E). The Vikings seem to come in 1 or 1.5 Amp versions, while all the Husqvarna Electrics say 80W on the backplate. What gives? Why are the Vikings so much more powerful? Or are they. Can they do the same heavy duty tasks? Is it even the same machine? Please help me get my head around this if you can. Thanks in advance. Grunde
very educational thanks....so I should stock up on belts then..just in case..as i am not sure if they were ever replaced during my mom's ownership of the machine..
I have a 21E that I love and have sewed with for more than 45 years. Yesterday, I had a loud bang, some smoke and a burning smell. I found that a whole lot of silver paper and plastic had been caught up in the belt and from what I can see, the drive belt appears to have contacted a wire and ripped it out shorting out the electrical system. The light is still operating. Do you think this could be repaired? Where are you located? Great video on this wonderful little machine by the way. If it can not be repaired, what on earth would I replace it with that can just about sew anything, especially in low gear. Cheers
Hi I found this very informative. I can solve the problem of the oil hole near the bobbin winder. My machine has a little pointy plastic tube in it that would deliver the oil to the pad below with acuracy. Similar to the ones in the top of the machine.
Thank you for the video. Question: What are the specifications for the capacitors (microfarads, length, diameter)? My capacitor has been removed, so I have no original from which to get the specifications. I’d like to find a replacement. Thank you so much! :)
@@alicearmen5601 Well i am glad to hear that some "magic" made in Sweden in the 60ies still lures in knowledgeable people. I do not expect the same in 60 years time from machines produced today. Even the smell of bakelite is a delight with these machines in my opinion. Thanks for sharing.
Got this same machine in excellent condition, though I’m bummed out that it refuses to run. It’s either the pedal (which has something clinking around) and/or the stuck cam (the locking arm won’t move all the way down since someone pushed a cam all the way in. Thus making it stuck in place). I’m trying to hype myself up to take the machine apart myself so I can fix the cam area.
Yes very helpful as I just completely serviced my mother's 19E Zig Zag. However, I now an issue with the foot controller, it heats up to above 60degC and the motor is still humming while foot is unpressed. How would you service the foot pedal (type FR 300) and change the inside electronics ?
I found your video when searching for information about a problem with my Husqvarna Practica 4020, which proved very useful for a range of maintenance issues but didn't cover the problem I have. I have had the machine for about 50 yrs from new and it has been very reliable. Recently I wanted to make a mask for supermarket shopping during Covid 19 lockdown. I found the machine's stitch selector cam locked so couldn't do zigzag. I unscrewed the knob on the front and after a bit the whole lot fell off and I still couldn't release the selector cam until taking the back off. My problem is I can't seem to get the front knob and metal slide back on. There is also a small spring that flew out and I don't know where it belongs. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Hi - I would very much like to know where you can buy new parts for the Husqvarna 21 e ( if there is anywhere ) I learned to sew on one of these, and sewed much of my clothing in my youth on it. My mother sold it while I was abroad. Now I've bought an old one, but the transporter does not come up, only moves about 1/2 mm up and I thought I should try to service it and figure out how to fix that :D
Hello, nice video. I have a viking Husqvarna sewing machine, and is out of timing. Is a model 415 top bobin, I can hear the needle hitting the hook . Can you make a video about setting the timing in those machines? Thanks by the way, where is the cat?
I have this sewing machine and I'm so glad I found this video since I'm terrible with these machines. I have a slight problem. The pattern cam. I made a mistake and took it out (i was curious and wasn't sure what it was) and now when i try to push it back in, the knob underneath it won't go inside like it should. It's sort of hanging outside the machine when i close the door..!!
I just bought one of these today since I fall in love with them for their quality and effectiveness! Although it needs a service, but still I got it for a good bargain. They really are heavy duty. I think this video covered major problems of the machine, but mine has a kinda click sound when it sews and the thread is cutting off frequently! I still need to find out why! Any suggestions? Thanks.😊
You may've already checked these suggestions but make sure you have a good quality brand new needle, check threading and tension. Apart from that, check hook point is not burred and check hook timing/needle bar height. Thanks.
@@InStitches Thank you for your reply much appreciate the tips too. I did what you suggested, changed the needle and now seams are ok so far. The other thing I noticed is when I start to sew it hardly starts, it's very slow at start but then it goes to normal speed after struggling. Do you think oiling the machine should improve the performance? Thank you 👍👍😊
Hi Brad here. Best video! Great "How To", everything I needed to know...... I bought second hand the exact same model as this, (CI21) and I noticed the serial number inside the front cover of your machine (K2120153) and I was wondering if there is a code within these numbers, like there is for "Briggs and Stratton" engines, for working out the date of the machine? Mine is "L2127402". The 20 series from what I can find out was built between 1955 and 1966? I just would love to know everything about my machine... When I bought it from a second hand dealer in country South Australia in a little known town called Cobdogla, or Cobby as the locals call it, it was missing a few accessories; the bottom part of the bakelite accessory container, a couple of presser feet, the attachable work table and the precious manual. I found a downloadable pdf for a manual for model "21 A" but I dearly want the users manual for a "CI 21". I just want as close to original equipment as I can possibly get. I'm not bothered if its not an original manual, just a printable pdf will do. Even the site husqvarnaviking doesn't seem to have it. Anyone who finds one in an old draw should post it on ebay right away! Lol. Again great instructional video, I will be returning to it in the future!
EXCELLENT Video! So thorough and well explained. Thank you for taking the time to show the annoying reassembly of the spring. I don't like working on Vikings, but I fell for a series 20 today for $30 at a garage. sale. Sweet. Do you happen to have a link for the belts? I am an expat Canadian living in the USA. I really look forward to seeing more videos from you!
@@InStitches OK. Do you have an extra plastic motor and clutch cover for the 21E? And do you have a favorite among the Type 21, 21A or 21E? I am on the FB group (:
Would you recommend later models too. combina/practica 3010 4020 etc? I also love my bernina 530-2 and my mother has a 19e. I think the bernina has better precision, stitch quality and decorative stitches while the huskies handle heavier material. I love the bernina’s removable top/bottom covers.
I haven't had a very good run with the later models. They seem quite weak in the pattern cam area and motor. Just about every one I come across has a split pattern cam assembly.
Thanks for this great video! I just picked one of these up but it has an enclosed motor. Is there a way to clean and service those without messing the metal casing up?
Hi Mr In Stitches, My Dad bought a Viking CL21A Serial 2177, at a thrift store about 25 30 years ago. It sat in the car port for about 20 years. I aquired it about 10 years ago. It came in original carry case, warrenty documents stating that it was first sold in Sept 1961 and who it was sold to, ha! However, no users manuel. I thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial videos, thank you. I have learned so much about this wondrful machine because of you. I need to replace a control knob, the knob with the numbers 1-5 that moves the needle left, center, or right. The plastic material the knob is made of has crumbled and broke. I still have the screw, metal pin, and the metal slotted slide attatchment that fits at the bottom of control knob. Question, I have looked for this part on the internet, so far to no avail. Do you have one I could buy from you? Could you possibly direct me to someone in the western part of the United States who deals with parts for our beloved Husqvarnas? Again, Thank You so much for the time and detail you put into your videos. And a warm hello to your Miss Molly...
I found your video very informative and interesting. My Class 21's motor burnt out yesterday and I am totally gutted. I have been told it is not repairable. Having watched your video I was wondering if you had a motor for the Class 21? The machine is still at the repair shop but I am collecting it tomorrow and hopeful that I may be able to fix it. I am in the UK. Would you have any tips, please? If I cannot fix it I am looking at a class 19 on Sunday. In the photos it looks as good as new so I am hopeful it will be in good working order. Would you recommend a class 19 too? Thank you very much
Do we have to press on the foot controller while we are using that Non-Contact Pen Detector? Or will it just detect a fault in the machine, when you don't press the Foot Controller? And then if you do press the Foot Controller, will it detect a fault in the Foot Controller? Also, is that a detector that detects 90 to 1000 volts of fault, or is it the one that detects the smaller amounts?
Wonderful video. Thank you! I collected my new 60s model of this machine this morning and was able to follow along and get it all clean, oiled and running beautifully. A question... I fixed the needle position following your directions, but the feet are still slightly left of centre. Are there any adjustments for this?
This may be because the foot bar is slightly askew. It's easy to adjust but it may upset another adjustment which may cause an issue with feeding. You can try twisting the foot by hand but I wouldn't use much force and if you can move it, that would indicate the foot bar clamp screw is a little loose and needs tightening.
Thank you for this excellent and informative video. I've just bought myself a 19E and this will be invaluable for guiding me in giving it a good service and check over. What is the stuff that you are using to clean the casing? I'm nervous about damaging the beautiful finish with solvents. Also do you know if these share bobbins with other models as I'd like to try and get a few spare metal ones. Mine comes with a user manual but if there's a service manual available I'd love to have one. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to post this, it's a great help.
The needle position goes very far to the right when i use the selector knob. The needle position screw wouldnt bring it in enough. Is there a srcrew in the back on the inside to change and adjust the range of the throw on the selector knob?
Loved your video. Just what I was looking for. What I'd like to know is where can I buy one of those oil-cans you were using.? I've been using pippettes, but it's easy to over-oil with them. Being able to add a metered dose of oil is the way-to-go. Do you have a link for buying the oil can? Cheers.
Fantastic video, thank you. Can't wait to carry out some maintenance and give my machine the TLC it so deserves. Especially like the part outling how to pull out the wheel to get a slower drive. Do you think this machine could handle heavy duty canvas? As I'm keen to make a boat cover.
@@InStitches thanks for getting back to me. We'll get someone with an industrial machine to do the stitching. Looking forward to watching your next video 😊
Thank, you very much appreciated. My old machine is very dirty on the inside i realized. What do you use to clean it out? Do you know the measurements for the belt? I found this 9 1/4" (inches I guess) still made by Husqvarna Viking. Would you or any one else know if it fits this particular machine?
If you live in Sweden, drop by any local second hand shop in your area and get yourself a deal. You can find one between 350kr and 800kr! Best of luck.😊😊
can you tell me if you have the cam's or where I can get the B and the C cams for the viking 21 machine? It's like the parts for these machine's are very hard to fine!!
What an excellent and thorough review! Thank you very much for sharing your expertise! The Husqvarna 21 is a great machine and I'm still looking to get one. I have recently come across the Necchi Supernova and I was wondering what you think of it and also how does it compare to the Husqvarna 21? They seem to share some same feature i.e 2 motor speed, ability for pattern cams but I'm not sure what the build would be for an easy maintenance and durability. If you could shed some light I would really appreciate it! Many thanks.
Hi! Thank you for this excellent video! I'm renovating my Grandmothers' old Husqvarna Automatic 21 that I inherited about 10 years ago. It's in great shape except it needs new belts (I found a set of new original ones on ebay) and one of the gears in the reduction gearbox has lost some teeth. These are hard to find for the Automatic 21 but I found several for 6430. The assembly looks different to me but I just need the plastic gear and those look at least very similar. Are they interchangeable between these models?
Good morning, are you able to help me ,my 21e needs a few parts.Bought this machine and I can see it being King but it has come from a smoker and badly stained and hiding a few battle scrapes. Regards Alex
Thank you so much for this video! Im in the proces of buying this machine and this was very helpful. Could you tell me whether this machine can sew with thick denim thread?
I find it does struggle to sew denim jean hems where you turn the hem under twice; it can't quite handle the felled seams when you've effectively got 12 layers of denim. Even when the tension is very high the top thread tends to jam in the hook area and even with good belts they tend to slip. You can turn the machine over by hand through the extremely thick parts but it just can't handle it. You may get away with just turning the hem under once. I have found the best domestic machines for hemming jeans are the very old Singer machines, like the treadle and hand crank type, or a 201K and the like. The Bernina semi industrial also does a good job. An industrial if the best way to deal with jeans sewing.
Within reason. I tried it and it will do light denim. It doesn't handle hemming normal jeans with a double turned in hem on the lumpy seams very well even with the tension cranked up.
Can you see the feed dogs moving (front to back) when turning the machine by hand? If they just go up and down then maybe stitch length or the mechanism is seized and/or malfunctioning.
Hello I have a Viking Automatic 21. The foot control is broken. The little fabric strap that pulls the roller up the rheostat is broke. Is there anywhere that offers a replacement part or is there a homemade fix?
A generic foot pedal will work fine instead - either the "clamshell" rheostat type or an electronic one. The connection is just 2 wires. Having said that, the Husqvarna pedals are havey (so won't move around) and very good quality if you can figure out a fix.
I would like to know how to get to the light. I have two of these and I am using one for parts. The light falls out of the one I am keeping and it works great on the parts machine.
The bulb sits in it's fitting which is located inside a chrome cage under the arm of the machine. The chrome cage is hinged on the right side and if you pull the left side of the cage down, it should swing down on the hinge, exposing the bulb and its fitting.
I have the 21 e and love it. I also have another 21e that I would like to renovate, it needs a replacement upper tension assembly and I think a new spring for the reverse button then it will be good to go. Does anyone have any parts for sale or could you direct me to someone please. My daughter wants my 21 e but I just can't part with it so I bought this second one in good faith only to find these problems, it is stuck in reverse too!!
Thank you for this video! Do you own a service manual for this machine and if so; is it possible to buy a copy from you? Its impossible to find on the web.
Hi! I was wondering how to put the tread tension dial back on the machine? I read the manual but couldnt find anything... thank you in advance to anyone that can help :)
Hi , just wondering if you could kindly tell me how to remove the capacitor and reconnect the wires . When I attempted, I found the lower set of wires going to the coils of the motor and as I am not a “professional electrician “ I felt uncomfortable to proceed further. I would appreciate if you could kindly tell me how to proceed removing the capacitor and get started with the motor. I am really “ cheesed off “ with the complex connection of those wires . Further, I fail to understand why are there 4 wires ., two on top and two at the bottom of this capacitor? My other Viking ( Viking 5220 ) has just two prongs and to remove them was “ literally a cakewalk “ . While this one on my Viking 21A is not only complex but giving me heartache, let alone the machine is totally nonfunctional! I look forward to your early reply and help. Thanks, Ramana .
Hi, I'll try to explain how the capacitors are set up but I would recommend taking your machine to an electrician or sewing machine repair person. From memory, the capacitor set can be bypassed. Don't quote me on any of this because this is from memory and any modifications you make could make the machine dangerous. You have four wires, two on top and two on bottom of the capacitor set. From memory, you clip the wires top left and bottom left and join them and do the same for the top right and bottom right. Make sure an electrician checks it before plugging it in because, as I say, I'm working from memory.
Hello, thank you very much. I live in Perú, can you tell me where can I buy on line some original spare parts for my husqvarna sewing machine. I LOVE my sewing machine but it is very old and does not work.😔😔😥😥😥 I hope they are not ezpensive to buy them.In my country do not sell it . I will be very thank with you.
Hello I got a rotary viking Husqvarna type 8E the belt motor belt is missing, I bought it like that, out of ebay. I don't know where to buy it new or used. Do you recommend a place where you can buy it? Thanks
This machine has only one cam.. The machine has an assortment of perhaps 5-6 cams, which enable many more stitch functions than it will with just the one cam that is shown.
More than likely the capacitor set is failing. They can be removed and you can continue to use the machine without them but I would recommend installing a replacement set asap. Also check motor brushes are not worn out.
Oh thank you for responding...the machine actually did give out a lot of smoke when the it was being serviced by a repairer...He said he's not so good with motor repairs...any suggestions?
Someone's selling a husqvarna pedal machine but I don't know it age. Only has a number: 32-10 but I can't find any info on it, anyone know what year they made it? Cheers
Hi Col. Thanks for the lovely story.

I'm from Argentina and I have this sewing machine. I love this machine. It's the best. Thanks for the video!
I seen one of these on an Instagram post and I said I need one, and that’s coming from a Bernina family! So I’m keeping a look out for one. 💚
Very helpful video, thank you! I bought a H/Viking Automatic 21 and now I know how to check the motor brushes and I appreciate the oiling points too.
These machines are true marvels. With this video I am able to confidently replace my belts and use my 21E for another 60 years.🎉
It's so cool to see that not only husqvarna's gardening tools has spread around the globe but also these (in sweden) classic green sewing machines. I recently bought my own CL 21 from a local sewing machine shop since I grew up using the very same machine. I've not had the chance to use it a lot yet but I know it was a well made investment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
I was born in 1958 and my mother got this as a present then, it was of course brand new❤
This video was wonderful and a huge help in guiding me in the maintenance and cleaning of a 21E that I found out on the street for trash pickup with the pedal, bobbins and extra feet. Looked at the belts and the motor brushes which were all fine. Also had someone check the electrical which was also good and after an oiling its running very well with a new needle and thread. The plastic covers are pretty cracked but overall a neat find that now has a new home. Again Thanks so much! Cheers from Germany
Great to hear!
Just bought one of these from trade me. Been watching and rewatching this video as I set mine up. Very much appreciated!
Thanks for this video! I have the Husqvarna 19E, wonderful machine, and now I was able to understand and adjust the tension of the belt. Overall video is well made and well explained. God bless you!
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much for this video. With this video and the one where you explain how it works, you convinced me I had to purchase it, while my Bernina 1530 is in a complicated repair process. I absolutely love it. Thank you.
This is a total Godsend. You gave us a treasure trove of helpful information! Cheers all the way from Copenhagen 👍👍👍
Thanks. I'm pleased it helped.
@@InStitches Between yesterday and now, I was doing some test sewing, and the capacitor blew (due to bad luck or some kind of idiocy on my part, I don't know). Thanks to your video, I understood what had happened and didn't panic. :)
I'm looking for replacements, but I can't find anything that looks the same. Do you have any advice for finding a replacement?
@@IngerWinkelmann They just blow when they get old, it's nothing you've done to cause it. Maybe try your local repair person to get the part.
A million thanks for this video! It helped me troubleshoot what is wrong with my 21E machine that is very dear to me
❤
Very useful. Trying to work out what is wrong with my machine which I inherited from my Mum. I love it.
Great video! Especially like you taking your time and explaining all details!
I love this video.
I have just changed both belts on my newly acquired e21 thanks to your video - thanks so much for sharing your knowledge
Thanks. I'm please the video helped.
Hi, where did you find the belts?
@@karlstream any luck finding those belts. mine are about to bite the bullet
@@karlstream thanks for the reply I'll see if i can find some.
Great video! Thank you very much for taking the time to show us your work and thoughts on this nice machine.
Thanks for watching!
I'm pleased the video was helpful.
I have the 21A. Love this machine. Just need more bobbins.I paid $30.00 for it...
I have the model 21e
Grunde
The USA's mains voltage is half of NZ's, so their Amps are worth half as many Watts, broadly speaking.
very educational thanks....so I should stock up on belts then..just in case..as i am not sure if they were ever replaced during my mom's ownership of the machine..
Cheers
It sounds like the capacitor has blown out and into the belt. The capacitors can be replaced so that's probably worth looking into. Cheers.
Hi
I found this very informative.
Omg, excellent video! Extremely helpful! Thank you!
Just ordered one on eBay. It looks new. I can’t wait.
Update? Did you like it?
I love it. It’s a fascinating, elegant and powerful machine
@@sideduck6501 Exactly, magic it is!
thanks a lot for all the information and all your work!
Thanks so much for your Video! This is such a good one, instructing and in slow phase.
Please help, where can I find the replacement belt for my CL21A model? Thanks in advance.
Yes very helpful as I just completely serviced my mother's 19E Zig Zag. However, I now an issue with the foot controller, it heats up to above 60degC and the motor is still humming while foot is unpressed. How would you service the foot pedal (type FR 300) and change the inside electronics ?
Your video was really helpful, thank you! One question, would you know where I can buy new belts? The old ones are almost gone.
Take a look at my video here ruclips.net/video/D_OyqgLJlLw/видео.html at about 30 minutes in. Thanks.
the motor belts, what size are they? if you have to replace them.
Thanks.

Thank you for your reply much appreciate the tips too. I did what you suggested, changed the needle and now seams are ok so far. The other thing I noticed is when I start to sew it hardly starts, it's very slow at start but then it goes to normal speed after struggling.
Do you think oiling the machine should improve the performance?
Thank you 👍👍😊
@@maheraljannan Oil the machine and if that doesn't improve it maybe the belts are worn. Thanks.
56:15 I confirm there should be an oil tube similar to the ones above. This one is easily lost when removing the motor casing.
X2 !!

Thanks for your kind comments. I'm not sure where to get the belts from although I haven't really looked very hard.
@@InStitches OK. Do you have an extra plastic motor and clutch cover for the 21E? And do you have a favorite among the Type 21, 21A or 21E? I am on the FB group (:
I don't have 21e motor and clutch covers sorry but probably have some for the 21a.
There should be a way to remove the motor but it may be a little fiddly. Thanks.
I still have the screw, metal pin, and the metal slotted slide attatchment that fits at the bottom of
control knob.
Thank you and yes I have one. You can find my web site address in the video description. You can email me from there.
cheers mate, great help, you wouldnt happen to have a spair thread guides would ya?? (the ones that keep breaking?) after a pair for ages ;)
Sorry but I haven't at the moment.
Thanks. The cleaning liquid is a very mild general purpose cleaner.
The needle position goes very far to the right when i use the selector knob. The needle position screw wouldnt bring it in enough. Is there a srcrew in the back on the inside to change and adjust the range of the throw on the selector knob?
Wonderful information, thank you!
Loved your video. Just what I was looking for. What I'd like to know is where can I buy one of those oil-cans you were using.? I've been using pippettes, but it's easy to over-oil with them. Being able to add a metered dose of oil is the way-to-go. Do you have a link for buying the oil can? Cheers.
They are oil bottles from the classic Elna Supermatic sewing machines and are no longer made. Thanks.

What an excellent and thorough review! Thank you very much for sharing your expertise! The Husqvarna 21 is a great machine and I'm still looking to get one. I have recently come across the Necchi Supernova and I was wondering what you think of it and also how does it compare to the Husqvarna 21? They seem to share some same feature i.e 2 motor speed, ability for pattern cams but I'm not sure what the build would be for an easy maintenance and durability.
I would imagine the gearbox gears are the same between models in this family. 21A, 21E, 19 etc.
Good morning, are you able to help me ,my 21e needs a few parts.Bought this machine and I can see it being King but it has come from a smoker and badly stained and hiding a few battle scrapes. Regards Alex
Thank you so much. Bless you👍
Thank you so much for this video!
Do you know if I can put a 1.5A motor from my 21A into a 19E?
Hi great Video !!! can you tell me what is the cause of machine not feeding I think dogs are right height Thanks
Can you see the feed dogs moving (front to back) when turning the machine by hand? If they just go up and down then maybe stitch length or the mechanism is seized and/or malfunctioning.
Where do I get a zipper foot for this machine. Ours got lost. Thank you.
Do you know anything about marvel402+the 41464 precision build deluxe sewing machine. Has a button hole button on top.
Hi there, thank you for this video! how can I get in touch with you to find parts?
Hello I have a Viking Automatic 21. The foot control is broken. The little fabric strap that pulls the roller up the rheostat is broke. Is there anywhere that offers a replacement part or is there a homemade fix?
A generic foot pedal will work fine instead - either the "clamshell" rheostat type or an electronic one. The connection is just 2 wires. Having said that, the Husqvarna pedals are havey (so won't move around) and very good quality if you can figure out a fix.
Hi, great video - really helpful! Can you tell me please the manufacturer of your little black oil 'injector'? I'd like to get one. ta, Sam.
It's the oil bottle that comes with the Elna Supermatic machines.
I think I have an upper tension assembly if you're interested. My email address is in the video description.
Thank you for this video! Do you own a service manual for this machine and if so; is it possible to buy a copy from you? Its impossible to find on the web.
Yes, I do have one. I'll scan it and send it to you. You can contact me via email. My web address is in the video description. Thanks.
Nice video
Just bought one of these. Is it OK to have so much play in the shuttle assembly? Thanks
Yes, that is quite normal. Get some oil on the shuttle spindle. The spindle goes through the bobbin case.
@@InStitches Excellent. Thanks

Hello I got a rotary viking Husqvarna type 8E the belt motor belt is missing, I bought it like that, out of ebay. I don't know where to buy it new or used. Do you recommend a place where you can buy it? Thanks
Hi. The belts are no longer available from the manufacturer. I'm looking into making some. Thanks.
Someone in the UK is selling them now on eBay
Great job thank you very much
Thank you!
This machine has only one cam.. The machine has an assortment of perhaps 5-6 cams, which enable many more stitch functions than it will with just the one cam that is shown.
Yes that makes sense. One built in cam.
Exellent video😊👍
Thanks.
Hi.Bobbin diameter?
Thank you.
Again,cheers
Good day
I just got this machine, it is running but gives off a burning smell from the motor area...what could be wrong please
P.S You don't mention what the surface cleaner is? Thankyou.
Just a general purpose cleaner. Don't use anything too harsh. Maybe test your cleaner on the under surface first.
Someone's selling a husqvarna pedal machine but I don't know it age. Only has a number: 32-10 but I can't find any info on it, anyone know what year they made it? Cheers
