I bought this machine 10 years ago to do some quilting, got started but then forgot about it, including how to use the machine. Thanks so much for the manual!
I loved your video; my dad gave me a Viking Husqvarna 21 in 1966 for my high school graduation gift. I used it to clothes my kids, husband and myself for many years, I still have it and use it for crafting. It has all the bells and whistles, so I think it was the top of the line at the time, it was used when I got it but in perfect shape, Thanks for the video it told me some things I didn't know about the machine.
Thank you for this video😊 I am in my mid 50ies, and have this sewing machine. I have never done much sewing, but my mom have done a lot, and most on this machine that she bought when she was 18. When she bought herself a new one, she gave this one to me. I have very recently gotten a bit interested in taking up sewing, and this is the machine that I still have, and it’s now 62 years old, and works just fine 😊. I’ve only made a few curtains before, so I’m excited to expand my “reportoire” 😊
Thank you so much for making this extensive video on the machine! I just inherited my grandmothers husqvarna and am also new to sewing. My mother and I have been trying it out and especially would NOT have been able to make a buttonhole without this vid! Cheers from Finland.
Thank you very much for a brilliant presentation of the Husqvarna Autaomatic 21E. I inherited a 21A from my grandmother but unfortunately I've lost the manual. Thanks to your video I've managed to sew a button-hole. Cheers!
God, thank you so much for these videos. I have this exact model and I was just staring at it for years without using it because I couldn't figure out how it worked. This is a god send
Thank you so very much for this video! I inherited this exact same model from my grandmother. The user's manual was nowhere to be found, and I had no idea how to set the stitches. You were very helpful! Thanks! Also, your cat is gorgeous 🤩
Best video on the old Vikings I've seen. I usually restore machines but I just got my hands on a 19 Special that I'm going to restore for myself as my first machine. I couldn't find anywhere else that explained buttonholing with this machine. Thank you, sir.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have just bought two of those for a very decent price and only need to learn the art of sewing, now that you've showed how to use the machine
Thank you so much! I recently found an old husqvarna automatic my mother used to use, but I wasn’t able to find any information on the sewing machine. I had no idea how to use one. I found your video incredibly helpful even tough it’s not the exact same machine, a lot of this did word the same as the machine I have. I now know the basics of this machine! I’m very grateful to be able to use the machine now. Again, thank you:)
I have one myself and i would say that it is a top of the line basic sewing machine seccond to nothing produced today in the basic segement. It is in my opinion a joy to use as well.
This was so informative. I've had my Husqvarana for 30 years! Brought it at a garage sale for $20 🤩Yesterday as I was sewing, it started to smoke. I've luckily found a repair shop. They say a new motor or rewired motor will cost up to $250. Definitely worth fixing as I very much doubt any machine you'd buy today would last 30+ years. I have never known what to do with all the different feet or wasn't aware of lots of the info in this video. I've only had it serviced once in all this time. I wasn't even aware where the oil went 🙄 I shall now maintain my beloved machine properly as it's such an amazing tough vintage beauty 😍 Thanks for the detailed information. Also I loved the cameo appearance of Molly the kitty 😍
Hi. That sounds like it could just be the capacitor that needs replacing and fortunately that costs a lot less to do than a new motor or rewire. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this video! I inherited my grandma's husqvarna 19e and it's very similar to this one. I think the main difference is that mine has fewer stitch types but that's alright. I really wnjoyed exploring the machine with the help of your video, thank you!
Thanks for your video. I just got my Grandmother’s machine. Thins is a wonderful video now I can learn about it. I don’t sew. New experience for me 😊 Kudos!!!
I loved your thorough explanations. They gave me an insight and a good head-start to be able to operate the Husqvarna 21E I bought today. I'm really looking forward to do some sowing when it arrives in about a weeks time. Can't Wait !! Cheers
@SideDuck Hi @SideDuck. When I got my first Husqvarna 21E I was captivated by its color, its engineering, its single svelte arm and tray table, its capacity for 2 spools, its potential for an infinite number of stitches via adjustments and the 3 cams, its powerful motor, its peculiarly efficient floating bobbin, its neat little bobbin window, its minimal oiling points, its simple mechanical design and user-friendly setup, its superb weight and its outstanding practical performance of simply sewing anything and everything including leather and canvass WELL, without breaking needles and especially the potential for the machine to last many lifetimes.. A thought that entered my mind was 'Why aren't all sewing machines made like this' . If I was to improve anything I would switch the bobbin winding and engine housing covers from plastic to metal. The Bobbin winding housing suffers the most breakages on second hand machines and it's rare to find a machine nowadays, that is not cracked there. As soon as I got the machine, I began sewing up and modifying a quilt cover to form separate compartments to house 2 sleeping bags. Then I started sewing a few pairs of light weight trousers I had bought in Thailand, where the material was 'Space-Age' but the sewing was 'Stone-Age'...lol I was then 'Hooked' on my Husky 21E and after listening to the interesting and thorough 'In Stiches' video where the expert presenter gave a few 21E machines away to 'thrift-shops' , it almost brought tears to my eyes...lol I have about 5 or 6 old singer sewing machines, a Husqvarna 21E and a Husqvarna 21A. I want to preserve and protect these TITANS of industry and longevity and I have stored them away for another time. The Husqvarna 21E and A are in the most accessible places in my house right now and I have oiled them all with a special oil made in Bavaria in the 1800s to oil munitions like guns and pistols. It is called 'Ballistol' and its 'superpower' is that it DOES NOT RESINIFY. That means the oil does not turn to a Gum, after the volatile components have evaporated. That was the best thing I could do for my machines and I am confident that they will NOT 'Gum-Up' as long as they are in storage. Right now I have done all the sewing I needed to do, but I know when the time arises, my go-to-machine-of-choice will be the Exceptional Husqvarna Viking 21E. It is such a JOY to use, infinitely capable and so brilliantly engineered. It's my most favourite machine of all time. Thanks for your interest.
@@griparian Thanks for charing. I also have a few sewing machines but the 21E is probaby the one i like the best. I feel in control when i use it and the stitches comes out great. @@sideduck6501 That's a 'Ditto' from me about sewing machines of that era being the 'pinnacle' of mechanical sewing engineering. That's why these machines-of-old are so valuable, even though most people do not recognise it. I have even oiled the fret-board of a guitar with this stuff and it made the wood come up like new. You can even use it on Leather. A real fine machine. I use it every day, almost. Beautiful stitch. I sew shirts. I also use in parallel a viking 2000/6440. It has some more useful seams, tripple strait. But the 21e has three nidle positions. I wish it was more, for controlling flat field seams and nearer borders. Both machinens in perfect condition. My wife has electronic Sapphire 960q. But I am satisfied eith mine!!
Thank you for this guide! I was originally searching for info on how to thread a twin needle with this machine, but I stuck around to watch the whole video even though you had nothing on that specific feature. (I eventually figured out the twin needle on my own, but then realized it didn't have enough spacing for my project anyway.) I have this exact model sewing machine that I found at a thrift store years ago, and I've been doing regular straight stitch and zig-zags with it to make all sorts of garments, but I could never figure out how to do all the fancy stitches it promised, and I had no idea it has three secret doors, slow speed option, or that my backstitch button isn't broken! So I had a lot of "wow" moments watching this video, and running back to my machine to check all the features you talked about. Sadly though, my machine does not have the B and C plugs for making different kinds of fancy stitches. It only has the A plug that's in the machine. I have no idea if it's possible to find such specific plugs somewhere online, but other than that, no manual and one missing bobbin, it has all the attachments and it's in good condition still. I really like this sewing machine as it's very sturdy and easy to sew with. The mint green color makes it stand out from all the white modern ones as well.
Thank you for this Video. I’m about to purchase this machine & I’m new to sewing. An older Husqvana or Bernina were recommended to me. This will be incredibly helpful.
Thanks for this video! My Husqvarna Viking was making a terrible squeaking noise but I can see now in your video that the belt needs a little oil and how I do that... so thank you! Going to try that out soon :)
Thanks so much for this video. Very helpful and great coverage of all the features and techniques. I've just snagged one of these machines on Gumtree and I'm feeling much more confident about using it now.
Thanks to you down under I have my granny's old Husqvarna and trying to get it working correctly. Your video is great with the setting. This is the best intro video I have seen so far. Gratings from Sweden the land of Husqvarna :)
Appreciate the effort to share what you know. I have this machine with no accessories. Only straight stitching pressure foot. Pls . Give me the settings for zigzag if possible ❤
From one Kiwi to another, thanks for the demonstration ,looking about found this as I'm about to buy this model, think it will sit nicely with the Grasshopper, which got me into sewing.cheers Alex
I've got this husqvarna today - all is fine, despite the button for the stich length and the back stitch, which is stuck in. The husqvarna sews backwards! I ask youtube for help and found your wonderful videos! You did/ do such a nice job. Love it! Do you have any advice, how I can fix this button? Greetings from Germany, Andrea
Wonderful video, many thanks! Out of all the Class 21 models, which one is the best for features and ease of maintenance? I see a Class 21a, 21e, 21 CL, etc. I am confused about which came first, which model was made last, what differences they have. I'd love to know.
Thank you for this video. I am wondering if you have done any videos on how to unfreeze the drop feed knob on this old sewing machines PLEASE. Thank you in advance.
Hello from Denmark! Wonderful demonstration of the old Husqvarna, thanks for that! I just picked one up a month ago but the sting length doesn't seem to be working? It runs and purres like a kitten but the sting length is only about 0,1cm even though I place the button at 3(or 5 ) . Any idea to how I fix or if its fixable at all? Thanks :) Pauline from copenhagen
Great video! I started using my machine thanks to the info here but now it won’t run! The bobbing gear in the back turns when I step on the pedal but it won’t sew! Please help!
This video was a huge help, thank you! I inherited my great great aunt’s sewing machine and this video gave me almost all the answers I was looking for. I was wondering if by any chance you would have the answer to my remaining problem with the sewing machine. The needle only stars going up and down when the foot pedal is pushed almost all the way down, and the speed is super fast when the needle starts moving. The slow mode you showed in the video helps but still I have no control over the speed with my foot other than the two modes. I am wondering if the foot pedal is broken or could it be something else/have something to do with the machine itself? Thank you once more for such an informative video
Thank you so much for such a detailed demonstration of this machine. I have a few questions if you don't mind? If I only have the standard foot, can i use the other cams for other stitches? It looks like I would need the satin stitch foot to me. If I only have the standard foot, which cam should i use for straight stitch and zig zag? Are extra feet and bobbins easy to find? Also, that was really lovely thread you were using, what is that?
Thanks very much for this video! I have a Husqvarna automatic Cl21 and I didn't understand how to use the walking foot (darning foot). With your explication I can use correctly the foot. Best regards from Argentina.
thank you for taking the time for the tutorial. however, i need a printed copy of the service manual for the 21-e. all that's accessible to me is the pdf version. if you would give me a hint where to get a hard copy, i would be grateful.
Mine just doesnt pick up the bottom thread and i have done everything exactly like the video. I really want to learn how to do this! I don't know what I could have done wrong...
Nice Video, thanks. You mention that the thread should come off the bobbin clockwise. Does it make any real difference if it comes off anti-clockwise. I've several sewing machines and on none of them does it seem to make any difference which way in I put the bobbin.
DIY tip about missing the tiny plastic oil guide to the pad behind the pulley: I found a syringe whose tip was the perfect size, shape, and material to be a replacement, cut it off the syringe and shaped it to fit, and it's nearly indistinguishable from OEM. I don't know what kind of a syringe you'd ask for; it was one of a dozen-or-so that I've got with cat medication over the years.
This is such a helpful video! I recently got this machine as a gift from my MIL who is teaching me to sew with it. It has however been broken on the side and is missing the tension screw for the bobbin winding function. Do you know of a reputable place to source this piece? I have searched to no avail for this part. Alternatively, my thought would be to try to wind the bobbin with a standard screw without the tension device. Will that work? I'm considering buying a separate bobbin winding device, but would like to avoid that if possible.
You could hold the thread manually in front and lined up with bobbin so it winds evenly. Make sure to not wind it too tight or too loose. I hope that helps. Thanks.
Very much enjoyed your video. You've tutored me through many procedures on my new type 21. I am wondering which type of bobbin I should search for as it did not come with manuals or a bobbin.
Thank you for this video. I just got one of this machine, slightly used. Please my thread breaks at the needle when I am sewing. The stitches also tend to gather. Could you advice on what I can do?
Thank you so much for this presentation! I received a Husqvarna Automatic 21e yesterday and am excited to start using it. I don’t think it’s been used for ages though and when I plug it into the wall it starts sowing automatically at high speed. Nothing happens when I press the foot controller, it just keeps sowing. I can change the stitch from straight to zigzag and adjust the stitch length but still I have no control of the sowing. A bit too automatic 😅 Do you have an idea of what can have gone wrong and if there’s something I can do to try to fix it? Thanks in advance 🙏
Thx for a great video. I’m on a Husqvarna 2000 a very similar machine, but I guess you know that. I have a problem with the upper tension my thread gets jammed in the tension adjustment mechanism. Can you advise how to take apart, repair and clean. Thx. Ps envy your skill in sewing ds
omg your my hero..I just got this machine from my mother as part of my inheritance..I learned how to sew on this machine...my mom never showed me how to use the cams..or the fancy stitches...all she taught me was straight sewing...so thank you for posting this...but I have a question..how do I get the technical manual for the 21E as I do my own repairs..and my mom never got the eyelet plate..how do I find one or all three of them? I am subscribing to this channel..
Ha, I finally got around to checking over my 21E, better late than never! The brushes are over a 1/4” so ok for now, and all the belts and stuff are very good, no seizing, all levers work. I was excited until i went to thread it…. And ofc, the thread guide is broken! Gah! You wouldn’t happen to have a spare for sale from your parts machines? (I’m in NZ too)
Not sure if this will be seen since it was made 3 years ago. But my mother in law found me this machine at an op shop it works great other than when i attempt to reverse through thick layers (im sewing dog collars) it make a horid click, then the machines refuses to go until i lift the foot and move the fabric and then as soon as i go again it does the same thing. What am i doing wrong?
Lovely video and cute kitty. I have this machine from my Grandma (with a German manual!) and the bobbin doesn’t seem to spin even though the belt is spinning. And then removing the bobbin does not re-engage the needle drive at all. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your great and detailed video.
Would you recommend this one or the elna supermatic for sewing layers of heavy canvas with #92 thread.. also is there a difference in reliability with the 21A , CL8 or zigzag? i'm binging your videos by the way and I'm loving it.
Thank you so much for this video. I've got a problem though since I can't drop the feeder dog. I can't turn the knob as you showed in the video. Is there some trick?
When I pull the bobbin winder area out to try use the reduction gear, this seems to push on the bit that makes it go into bobbin winding mode. So instead of being able to sew at slow speed, it just stays on bobbin winding mode and the handwheel and needle bar does not move. I'm trying to emulate what you've shown in the video. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks so much for the video. Can I ask, which of the classic non-industrial Husqvarna's is the most powerful? (i.e. which would be best for leather)? Also, did all of these classic Husqvarnas use an AC motor? Many thanks!
Hello and thank you very much for your detailed video and you go nice and slowly! Good! But ..I just want to ask you about the presser foot. Did I miss it on your video? Did you show it on your video, because I want to sew a zipper on my skirt. But I dont know which one is a presser foot?
Hi! I would like to know where can I buy this little"Papper CD" that indicates the combination of number that we have to chose or want to use? I use to guess and it is very difficult to chose the right combination. Thanks for this video! And thanks in advande for your feedback abut my question.
Thank you for this video, I just got one today for a steal off FB, and it’s in verrrry nice condition, no seizing, all the bits and pieces, only my manual is in German 😂 but I have 2 x b1 and 1 c1 cam, no a1 :( Oh wow, didn’t realise you were in NZ... should have realised from your accent :)
The 'a', 'b', and 'c' cams shipped with the machines. 'a1', 'b1' and 'c1' were an optional purchase. 'a' cams are the ones normally in the machine. They don't get separated from the machines they're in, so they're nearly ubiquitous. 'b' and 'c' less so. But the optional cams are really hard to find.
@@zrebbesh Sorry for late reply, I just came back to this video... wow, ty for this info! So I have the rarer optional cams but not the standard ones! Makes me happy...and sad at same time, but now I know what to look out for, haha! TY :)
After applying WD-40 and freeing up the parts so they work well, should the penetrating oil be wiped off before applying a proper lubricant? Or can oil just be applied where it is needed. Won't the residual penetrating oil dilute the lubricating oil making it less effective?
I would say WD 40 is a very good product. Lubricant, water displacement and corrosion protection in one can. I think with this ancient machine that you can just start applying normal sewing machine oil. The machine is a sturdy peace of eqquipment so it will be just fine.
I really like both but for different reasons. It really comes down to the feel of the machine so it's the kind of thing you have to try for yourself. Thanks.
Fantastic video! Thank you for taking the time to go through all the features and different needle foots! I found a Husqvarna Type 19 online and was thinking about buying it but will definitely buy it now. Any idea what the differences are between the 21e and the 19? To be more precise, the model is T 19-8036 (Husqvarna Zig-Zag)? Keep up the good work! Thanks
Thanks for your kind words. I haven't got a 19A but it looks like it doesn't have the built in cams or the ability to accept cams so will only sew straight and zig zag.
I inherited this machine from my grandmother, and have managed to get it stuck in reverse. Any tips on how to shift it? The manual doesn't give info on that.
From memory that model can latch in reverse. Try pushing the reverse lever in and then up and it may release. Otherwise the reverse mechanism could be seizing. Thanks.
I bought this machine 10 years ago to do some quilting, got started but then forgot about it, including how to use the machine. Thanks so much for the manual!

Thank you for doing this video so nice and slowely and detailed. Good!
Please it helped. Thanks.
Thank you for this Video. I’m about to purchase this machine & I’m new to sewing. An older Husqvana or Bernina were recommended to me. This will be incredibly helpful.
a beautiful machine indeed!
Thanks for this video! My Husqvarna Viking was making a terrible squeaking noise but I can see now in your video that the belt needs a little oil and how I do that... so thank you! Going to try that out soon :)
Oh my, I love this! Very informative and the supervisor was so cute!! I so appreciated this tutorial!! Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the comprehensive guide to my great green machine. Being catman-too yours gave me a giggle 😁👍
I am really going to have a closer look at my mum in laws machine, really wondered about these cams
Thank you very much and I look forward to your response.
thank you for being so thorough, it really helps!
The best teacher ever!!!!! Thanks so, so much! Very well explained. :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks so much for this video. Very helpful and great coverage of all the features and techniques. I've just snagged one of these machines on Gumtree and I'm feeling much more confident about using it now.
Thanks to you down under
I have my granny's old Husqvarna and trying to get it working correctly. Your video is great with the setting. This is the best intro video I have seen so far.
Gratings from Sweden the land of Husqvarna :)
Thanks. Sweden looks great!
What a machine 💚 I really need to find one now 💚
Thank you so much for this video. Very informative. After spending so long looking I finally got the info I needed.
Please it helped. Thanks.
Great vid! I don't normally watch vids this long, but this was a must watch.
Please it helped. Thanks.
Thank you, very comprehensive. I now know my machine much better.
Appreciate the effort to share what you know.
I have this machine with no accessories. Only straight stitching pressure foot.
Pls . Give me the settings for zigzag if possible ❤
From one Kiwi to another, thanks for the demonstration ,looking about found this as I'm about to buy this model, think it will sit nicely with the Grasshopper, which got me into sewing.cheers Alex
dude this is such a wonderful and easy to follow video!!! Thank you sm :')
This was incredibly helpful, thank you!
Wonderful video, many thanks! Out of all the Class 21 models, which one is the best for features and ease of maintenance?
I see a Class 21a, 21e, 21 CL, etc. I am confused about which came first, which model was made last, what differences they have. I'd love to know.
Great video. I loved every minute of it. Very well explained and you covered everything. Thank you for uploading. GSS (in UK).
Thank you so much for this video we were having setting problems but this video sorted it and it goes great now yay we can sew!
Hi. I would say it's the foot controller at fault. Maybe see if it can be fixed or get a good replacement. Thanks.
Great! Detail are very important. You got it.
Thank you so much for the video, very helpful!
Danke.Das alle beste Vorführung .Alles perfekt erklärt.Binn begeistert.
Thanks and thank goodness for google translate!
Excellent video, very well explained. It helped me a lot. successes...
Beautiful cat. And machine.
Thank you.
How can you hold it like that, it ways a ton😅
OMG I was thinking the same exact thing. I said to myself is it empty inside : )
Exactly
thank you for taking the time for the tutorial. however, i need a printed copy of the service manual for the 21-e. all that's accessible to me is the pdf version. if you would give me a hint where to get a hard copy, i would be grateful.
Sorry I'm not sure where you would find one. Maybe print the pdf yourself if you have a printer or get it printed somewhere? Thanks.
Thank you so much. It is very helpful👍
Very nice video, it helped me also for understanding the Husqvarna Zig-zag, thanks !
Glad it helped!
Kitty was very helpful making the video much cuter!
Great video, helped me realise the reverse button is stuck down. Any suggestions to get it to move back up please? I have a Viking Special 19E. Thanks
Good one. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks. As far as I know, they are quite a specific bobbin so you'll need to make sure any bobbin you buy is for this model.

Excelent! Is it posible to get a video replacing knob or checking out if it broken, cause reverse does not work. Thanks a lot.
Sounds like the capacitor may be short circuiting. That can be fixed by bypassing or replacing the capacitor. Thanks.
Thanks. I don't have a service manual for this model but you may find this video helpful - ruclips.net/video/f9J584aGvJo/видео.html
@@InStitches ya i am watching it now...any hints on where I can find one??..I'm in Canada..but looking on line
(I’m in NZ too)
Sorry, I don't have any from spares. Cheers.
@@InStitches dang, ok, thanks
Thanks, now I can use my mom's old machine se\he had bought new to sew some cuddy cabin boat cushions.
That's great!
What am i doing wrong?
invaluable information
Thanks so much!!!
Thank you, man! 👍
Thank you for this video! Very helpful! 😍
Fantastic video, thank you.
Would you recommend this one or the elna supermatic for sewing layers of heavy canvas with #92 thread.. also is there a difference in reliability with the 21A , CL8 or zigzag? i'm binging your videos by the way and I'm loving it.
Not sure how either of those machines would go with #92 thread but my bet would be on the 21e Husqvarna. Thanks.
@@InStitches thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. I've got a problem though since I can't drop the feeder dog. I can't turn the knob as you showed in the video. Is there some trick?
I would say the drop feed mechanism is seized. Thanks.
I just bought a 21A - so thanks for this video - do you know how much they sold for originally when new?
Very good video, Can i used for leather?
Yes, this machine will handle light leather. Thanks.
Hello and thank you very much for your detailed video and you go nice and slowly! Good! But ..I just want to ask you about the presser foot. Did I miss it on your video? Did you show it on your video, because I want to sew a zipper on my skirt. But I dont know which one is a presser foot?
If you start watching from about 36 minutes on this video, the presenter will mention sewing on zippers. This may be of help to you.
Hi! I would like to know where can I buy this little"Papper CD" that indicates the combination of number that we have to chose or want to use? I use to guess and it is very difficult to chose the right combination.
Thanks for this video!
And thanks in advande for your feedback abut my question.
i have one and i could take a picture of all the combinations if you still need them
PakkiNakki Thanks in advance if you can do that!!!
Mr. In Stitches, you are 10+! (Sorry, I don't know your name.)
Thank you for this video, I just got one today for a steal off FB, and it’s in verrrry nice condition, no seizing, all the bits and pieces, only my manual is in German 😂 but I have 2 x b1 and 1 c1 cam, no a1 :(
Oh wow, didn’t realise you were in NZ... should have realised from your accent :)
Is it the shop for sewing machine in Buffalo New York? I have one of them machine, but I like to have it fixed.
How is he holding that up so casually, this thing is so heavy 😆
My first thought was, this must not be the right video, because mine weighs more than anything I've held, even my children.
Maybe hi's that strong.. ;-)
Season’s greetings, Do you know if a modern walking foot works on this model machine? If so, which one? My thanks!
Good video
Which one do you like better: this or the Elna Supermatic?

Thanks.
Thanks for a great video. I have a 21A myself and I learned a lot.
It is possible for you to scan and upload that service manual you showed us?
